Opening night
April 6, 2007 by Jason Guarente
It was an uneventful night for the ex-Barnstormers who made it back into affiliated ball. The most notable item was something that didn’t happen.
Aaron Herr, who was with the Barnstormers in spring training in 2005, didn’t play in Louisville’s 5-4 win over Toledo.
Herr finds himself in a tough spot this season. Louisville has Mark Bellhorn at second base and Earl Snyder at third base, which creates a lot of competition for playing time. Bellhorn and Snyder are both former big leaguers who are on the wrong side of 30.
It seems in the Reds’ best interest to give those at-bats to Herr, who turned 26 in March and still has some upside. Perhaps Bellhorn and Snyder got the opening-night nod because of their standing as veterans. This is a situation worth following.
IN OTHER GAMES: Juan Melo went 1-for-4 with a single in his debut for the Harrisburg Senators. Relief pitchers Scott Patterson and Charlie Weatherby did not appear for Trenton and Clearwater. Eric Crozier’s opener with Portland was snowed out.
A complete list of Barnstormers in affiliated ball is here.

Patterson got loose last night, but he said after the game that he was only going to come on if someone got on base.
Instead, Trenton’s fifth starter, Jason Jones, came in to get some work.
Patterson’s Thunder might be in for a rough year — they got two hits and committed four errors in a 1-0 loss to Bowie.
According to another blog, Patterson was called up for a big-league game at the end of spring training. He didn’t pitch in that game, but that brief promotion tells me he has a higher status in the organization than your typical independent leaguer.
Wow am I reading that right? A former indy leaguer with an actual CHANCE? But who would think it would be someone in a Yankee uniform? don’t they “grow their own down on the farm?” What will happen next?

It Looks Like They Grow Them Down At The BARN

Weatherby made his debut for Clearwater Friday night. He went 1 2/3 innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
Tom Herr’s Hagerstown Suns lost 11-10. He must have felt like he was back at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
I actually heard Joe Torre got busted for trying to grow his own on the farm. Apparently the cops could swell it from miles away.
