York 12, Barnstormers 5
The first installment of the Red Rose rivalry was a debacle for the Barnstormers. They made two errors in the first inning that contributed to seven unearned runs. York was ahead 10-0 after two innings as it coasted to a win at Ty Cobb Field Sunday morning. The Revs are 4-0 and have scored 40 runs this spring. They sure don’t look like an expansion team.
The lineup …
Foster, LF: 1-for-5, run
Gonzalez, SS: 1-for-4, run
Todd, 1B: 2-for-5, run
Delgado, DH-3B: 0-for-4
Deitrick, DH: 0-for-3
Williams, RF: 0-for-5, RBI
Hileman, CF: 2-for-4, run, RBI
Woods, 2B: 3-for-4, run
Burkhart, C: 0-for-2
Santana, C: 1-for-2, 2-run double
Van Note, 3B: 1-for-2
Pitching …
Henkel: 2 IP, 9 H, 10 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
*Henkel was named the opening night starter prior to this outing. Although his defense didn’t help him early, with two errors in the first four batters, Henkel was hit hard. He was supposed to go four innings, but only lasted two as his pitch count soared to 56.
Andrews: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
*Andrews looked sharp in his first appearance since spring training with the Brewers in March of 2006. The lefty said he’ll be available to pitch May 24. Klebe called Andrews’ outing “outstanding.”
“It’s weird after not being out there against competition for so long,” Andrews said. “This is for real now. There’s really a hitter in there and it’s time to actually pitch. It’s not playing catch any more.
“My arm felt good. Now I’m just going to stay ready and hopefully I’ll get a phone call and these guys will need me in about three weeks.”
Pennington: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 Ks
DePriest: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 Ks
DePriest is murder on right-handed hitters. He struck out all three he faced.
Lira: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 Ks
Some notes …
*Travis Hake batted second and played second base for York. The former Barnstormer went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. You know he enjoyed this one.
“I want to win, no matter who we’re playing,” Hake said afterward. “It does make it feel a little better knowing that they let me go.”
*Bo Hart didn’t play because of a sore hip flexor
*The Barnstormers are 1-2 this spring and have been outscored 23-13 in those three games.
*Derek Griffith, the A ball pitcher I wrote about Saturday, is supposedly coming to camp Monday to pitch one inning in an exhibition game.
*You never want to read too much into spring training games. Players don’t take them seriously because they are more worried about physical preparation than results. But, man, York’s lineup has looked fabulous. Even the Revs outs were hit hard Sunday.
“We’ve got some guys who can swing it,” Hake said. “I knew that from Day 1. If you get out there, slap some hits and score runs, that gives you confidence.”

You’ve got to be $%#T*@G me! I hope Saint Frank is just playing the hustle. I know it’s spring training but I already feel the burn from loosing to York.
One more note to pass along …
According to Klebe, the Barnstormers will carry 25 players to start the season. That means catcher Jeremy Deitrick has made the team. Deitrick, a Penn State graduate, hasn’t played professionally since 2003 when he had four at-bats with the Atlantic City Surf.
So there won’t be any cuts then? According to what I can see you have the 24 guys listed on your list plus Griffith and Andrews (on the inactive list) that would make 25. I guess those tough decisions we speculated on earlier aren’t going to be made until after the 24th when Andrews becomes available?
And here there were people saying that we had too many players. Goes to show what can happen over the span of a week or two.
There are 26 names on the 2007 signed players page. One is Andrews, who is inactive. The other guys will be on the roster, according to Klebe.
Adam Gladstone told me Gustavo Martinez is scheduled to arrive in Lancaster on Friday, which — of course — is opening day.
Thats what I thought.
Even though Henkel got roughed up, will that change Frank’s decision to start him this Friday over maybe Josh Stevens or will Henkel get one more chance to pitch during spring training to find his groove?
No, Henkel is finished for spring training and he’s locked in as the opening night starter. He’ll have four days rest between now and Friday.
One other thing: The pitcher’s name is Derek Griffith, not Jason Griffith. I had a brain cramp earlier. It’s been a long week.
Thats Derek Griffith then…played with Clearwater in 06? I think he was either with Clearwater or Lakewood when he was released earlier this year?
Yes, Griffith started the season with Clearwater. That’s one reason the team invited him to camp. He was already in the area.
Thanks Jason…
According to Burt Wilson of the Intell, who is still at camp, Derek Griffith pitched two shutout innings against Somerset today. The Stormers lost 7-4 on a walk-off homer. Peeples gave it up.
It looks like the Revs lost their number 2 pitcher to an injury for one start plus they have 5 players with visa problems. They also cut pitcher Shane Loux.
Could be an interesting May for them also. They are also looking for a Japanese translater? Reminds me of a song “I think I’m turning Japanese I really think so”.
I don’t think the Revs will miss those five players that much. The only projected starter in the bunch was Bautista and they have Hake, Gutierrez and Cotto to pick up the slack.
Wayne Franklin, their No. 1 starter, dazzled at camp. I doubt he’ll be in the league for the whole season.
