AT CAMDEN RIVERSHARKS
Anthony Ferrari (6-1, 4.10 ERA) vs.
Rob Henkel (3-4, 4.58 ERA)
Even though they aren’t a serious contender, the Barnstormers will have a strong say in the South Division race. They play the next nine games against Camden and Somerset. It starts with three in the shadow of the Ben Franklin Bridge. Henkel makes his 11th start for Lancaster, which handed Ferrari his only loss of the season on May 27.
RECORD: 23-29
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Anthony Ferrari (Camden’s starter threw over 120 pitches and fought into the eighth inning as he earned his seventh win. He allowed five hits and one earned run).
WHAT WENT RIGHT: Chris Van Rossum went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple. The outfielder delivered three of the Barnstormers’ six hits. He didn’t have enough help in this one.
*The Barnstormers continued to have a patient lineup that draws a lot of walks and generates a lot of baserunners. They drew eight walks in this game, but didn’t turn those free passes into runs.
*Mike Woods, who entered the night hitting .192 in June, knocked in two runs. Woods was inserted back into the leadoff spot against Ferrari, a left-handed pitcher, and the change paid some dividends.
*The Barnstormers acquired designated hitter Jimmy Hurst in a trade with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League. The team still needs to sign Hurst before he can provide a presence in the middle of the lineup. I’ll try to update this story on Thursday.
WHAT WENT WRONG: Starter Rob Henkel allowed four home runs that accounted for five of Camden’s runs in 6 2/3 innings. It was the second straight so-so start for Henkel, who only has one win since May 9. Some of that is due to lack of support. The lefty is 3-5 with a 4.81 ERA.
*Denny Abreu and Dwight Maness hit back-to-back homers to open the night, putting the Barnstormers in an immediate hole. Randy McGarvey hit a two-run shot in the fourth and L.J. Biernbaum belted a solo blast in the seventh.
*Jeremy Todd, Jutt Hileman and Dominick Ambrosini – the heart of Lancaster’s order — went 1-for-11 with three strikeouts.
*Vince Blue is off to a slow start, although that‘s not too surprising because he didn‘t play much with Triple-A Toledo before he was released. Blue is 1-for-12 with five strikeouts in three games. He batted seventh.
*The Barnstormers left 13 men on base. It was just one of those nights when the clutch hits didn’t come.
*Following a four-game winning streak that sparked renewed optimism, the Barnstormers have lost three in a row. They’re 6½ games out of first with 11 to play. The South Division first-half race is all but over for the defending champs.

Well, here we go now..here we go…let’s be the best spoilers we can be…
Dave..yes we play Southern division fores a lot on the road in the 2nd half but that’s offset with less games with the north on the road and the North has 2 bona fide good teams at the top.
Hello everyone,
Sorry I’m not with Dave, but I will be listening. I hate to hear all the negative talk. Sure, we are down, but lets get behing the team and show them we are behind them no matter what.
Who at this time last year predicted a Championship? Anything can happen.
Go Stormers!!
Tom..I’m rootin..just angry with ODP as we all are.
ugh..what a start!
ok Rob…you settled down..now we need some runs.
When you see 5 straight swings and misses by Todd and Hileman..they’re trying to tie it up with 1 swing…not a good idea..just try to get a hit.
Trying that is probably frustration…can’t blame them really.
i don’t think anyone is negative towards the team or the players
Right on, Scottie. We’re trying not to be negative towards the team or players, just with the situation they find themselves in. But I still think Lancaster will turn it around in the second half and be in the playoffs.
By the way, remember, BASA also runs the league’s umpires.
And when we call it ODP or Keystone Baseball or Maryland Baseball or whatever, we all know it is basically just Peter Kirk.
Jimmy Hurst’s comments were made to Ashmore in 2005 but they are so TRUE today. Jimmy knew what he was talking about.
I keep forgetting about BASA being in charge of the umpires as well.
what a sorted web they weave…
Good job..young man on the scores!
L.J. Biernbaum is some hitter. It’s hard to believe he’s never played above low-A.
I’m on.
You’re sounding good Dave on Sportsjuice.
Hey Stormin..nice of you to join us!!!
Way to go. It’s the Van scoring Van move.
Jason – do you go to the away games or do you listen online?
I don’t attend away games — except for York later in the season. I’ve listened to some of this one on the radio.
Jason just wants to see my great neighborHOOD.
you mean people actually LIVE i york?
Yep. At least till the end of the year. Then my name will be “Stormin’ in ?”.
RALLY TIME.
LET’S GO STORMERS, LET’S GO
BTW – Stormin – love your avatar!
Come on guys, they’re helping us out.
Thanks. Of course Lancaster is on top.
Ok guys. Good try. We’ll get them tomorrow night. We the blogger fans of Barnstormin’ are behind you. We are not upset with you, just the system.
yo, yo –
Don’t hate the playas
hate the game
Jason, maybe it’s time you went back to the L or the trophy logo. Maybe your St. Louis Cardinal logo is upsetting the baseball gods. St. Louis is .459 and Lancaster is .451.
If we change it to a Atlanta Braves logo, they are .513 and with that percentage, we would be in first place.
Welcome Jimmy Hurst!! Could you bring a starting infielder and a reliever with you when you come to town??
Just read the threads from earlier in the day. There is more action in the blogs than on the field. Sad commentary.
Go bloggers!!!
Dear BASA,
Since York has 2 second basemen, may we have Travis Hake back when he is off of the disabled list??? Since you screwed him by sending him to Yoirk, maybe you can do the screw and send him back to the Barnstormers.
Thank you,
One fan hopefully speaking for many
If Pat Burle is feeling guilty about collecting that $13 million a year and is finished as major league player, maybe he can buy out the Stormers from BASA and become the owner! In all seriousness if someone came along who wanted to buy the team and seperate them from BASA, would they sell? How much would it take to get it done? Can we get out of BASA? This blog is a great source of information. I really wasn’t aware of all these ownership issues until I started visiting this site. I wonder how many fans out there really know the behind the scenes games that have been going on!
Mr. Stormer, or can I call you Barney. This is a great site to:
1. Find the latest, and I mean latest information on the Barnstormers and other teams in the Atlantic League.
2. Learn more on the runnung of the Barnstormer management and other managing areas of the league.
3. And most important. Take out your fustrations on fellow bloggers who will listen to you, console you, and every once in a while, discipline you.
And all of this is free. Thanks to our humble moderator who only ask once in a while for a comforting word for his favorite pet, Bosco. Really, spread the word. I have to everyone sitting around me at th stadium.
I’m no professional reporter and researcher like Jason, but a quick search on Jimmy Hurst of the Goldeye’s reveals that he just suffered a back injury in the last week or so and he has quite the temper. Also, he is quoted as saying that he does not want to play on the East Coast. Articles also say he was traded to Camden not Lancaster. Gee, sounds like we are getting Camden’s reject… a player with a back injury and a bad temper who does not want to come here in the first place. I guess that is BASA at work. The Lancaster Barnstormer players deserve better than that from BASA.
It will be interesting to see what Jason has to say about Hurst in the next day or so to see if what I found out is really true.
I like the idea of getting Travis Hake back. It was always fun to watch him play.
Many of the catcalls and boos I have heard at the clip were for the umpires. The trio that were working on Monday and tuesday night were just awful, that was the third time I have seen them blow calls. I would not feel good as a player seeing them on the field.
The umpires have had a rough year. There’s no question about it.
What would happen if the team was winning and the umpires were making great calls? There would be no blogging and Jason would have to spend more quality time with Bosco.
