Hurst acquired
June 27, 2007 by Jason Guarente
Upon further review …
AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com has updated its report on the Jimmy Hurst trade. It turns out the Winnipeg Goldeyes traded his rights to the Barnstormers and this press release was incorrect. So all of that vitriol directed at BASA this afternoon was a little misguided.
There is some question about whether or not Hurst will report to Lancaster. Check out the above link for the details.
Hurst, as noted earlier, had his rights acquired by the Barnstormers prior to the 2006 season, but he never played in Lancaster. The former Atlantic League All-Star’s career stats are here. He was hitting .236 with four homers in 32 games this season.
UPDATED …
Hurst said he has interest in playing in Lancaster and has discussed contract details with Barnstormers head of baseball operations Adam Gladstone.
Hurst played at Clipper Magazine Stadium as a member of the Nashua Pride in 2005, when he was hitting coach Glenn Murray’s teammate.
“I love Lancaster,” Hurst said. “I love the ballpark and the people there. That has always been a good place to play.”
This doesn’t mean Hurst is definitely going to sign. It means he’s interested.

After reading Mike Ashmore’s reprint of his 2005 interview with Jimmy Hurst, I’m trying to read between the lines whether Hurst would come back to the Atlantic league or not. Anybody else have a take on that after reading the interview.
yeah..I saw that at ALB.news too but reading his 10 Q’s asked by Mike Ashmore in a 2005 interview..I don’t think he wants to play anywhere in the Atlantic League. But while I was over there..I was stunned to read Bridgeport tried to take Sandy Aracena from the RW’s…Gee..I thought if you sent players to them you could recall them when you need them…not just take players whenever you feel like. Well..Joe Klein said Aracena wasn’t available to any team. I’m getting more disgusted with this league by the day.
Guess we will know shortly what his intentions are. If he still has it, definitely could be the big bat for the middle of the line up Frank is looking for.
SOME teams can take players from the Road Warriors…Long Island seems to be the one team that is allowed to take players from the Road Warriors at will and whenever they need them. Just a few weeks ago they took Norm Hutchins and Estee Harris remember. ….I am sure that IF LONG ISLAND needed Aracena…he would somehow find his way there…in one of those mysterious trades for future considerations or Acacena would retire and then next thing you know would appear on the ducks roster. ( see the Danny Bautista move from York to retirement to Camden?) Don’t get discusted with the league pitchfork…just try and enjoy the baseball!
Oh and I agree…IF Hurst decides to play here….that would certainly help the cause!
Anyone here read Baseball America.?…there was an interesting article on draft and follows..it mentioned Jason Norderum as being a bad investment for the Expos back in 1999. He was drafted by the Expos and received 500,000 and now he’s in the Atlantic League. There was a list of about 30 guys who had similar fates. Nothing against Jason because he’s a really nice guy…I just thought it was interesting to read.
I talked with Hurst tonight and updated the story.
Let us hope the Barnstormers make the money right.
I wouldnt count on that!
Just want to apologize for initially having Hurst going to Camden. Hopefully, nobody can fault me for going off of information found in a press release…since, you know, it’s not my fault that the team trading him has no idea where they sent him.
Such is life in the Atlantic League, my friends…
despite the original news being wrong, i feel the points made in the prior thread remain valid. Perception is reality. And if people perceive that an owner is playing favorites, then it’s likely that he is.
I don’t think there’s any good that can come from a situation like the Barnstormers are in. It’s a lose-lose for all the teams involved. Eventually, everyone will (feel like they’re) getting shafted. The only people that ocme out ahead in a BASA-type situation is BASA
no one can blame you at all, Mike.
even if you’re wrong (not by fault of your own) 1% of the time, you still disiminate 99% more information than the league does.
What’s interesting is the lines are so blurred between Camden and Lancaster that Winnipeg didn’t really know which team it was trading with. The Goldeyes were really trading with BASA and it was up to BASA to decide where Hurst might play.
are there other player/personel situations set-up like BASA in other indy leagues (I’m fairly confident in saying there are no affiliated clubs with this kind of arrangement, though I can’t say it with 100 confidence)
Affiliated clubs would not have this kind of agreement. think about it!
indy leagues are the only place where this kind of “arrangment” would be allowed.
I don’t know of any other indy leagues that have teams sharing the same head of baseball operations.
Scottie… I been looking into this myself (I wanted to find out also) and I don’t see anything like BASA with any other Indy League. I may be wrong but so far I can’t find anything like BASA with the other Indy leagues. I know for a fact this does not take place with affiliated clubs.
Agree Jason…that the teams didnt really have an idea WHO they are trading with and end up putting out a press release that is incorrect is completely unforgivable! Mike you can only report what you get. I dont see anything wrong with what you reported…something that wasnt your fault! Things like that are understandable.
Jason, I asked this on another thread but was curious if anything will ever come from the Manny trade with Somerset? Since this is not one of those BASA pocket to pocket deals, just wondering if anything will ever come of it. Thanks.
If shared operations aren’t allowed/don’t take place in other leagues, why does the Atlantic League allow it?
Seems to me that it has the potential to really damage the credibility of the league.
I doubt Lancaster will get anything in return for Santana. That was more of a courtesy deal because the Barnstormers were going to release Santana and Somerset needed a catcher.
Thanks. Good for Manny, Bad for us.
Scottie.. not sure why the AL does it but I would think it has to do with money and profit. I also think it is hurting the league. You see more players leaving for other leagues and also complaining about the league. I still think this is the top Indy league but the American Association is very close to the AL and other leagues are catching up also.
I’ve always heard people say they consider the AL (one of) the best indy leagues around.
why is that?
player exposure to get back to the bigs?
game experience for the fans?
profit margin for the owners?
certianly it’s not the player procurment procedures
Credibility of the league? What kind of credibility? Competitive?
The league makes money for their owners. It is an investment, their investment. BASA allows them to make more money.
The level of play in the Atlantic League is much higher than most indy leagues, such as the Northern, Frontier and Can-Am. Those leagues have players with no pro experience.
credability meaning it’s a league that actually fosters and promotes fair competition among franchises. rather than the league offices deciding who this years contenders will be.
I have got to believe that one day someone is going to want to buy a team from the ODP.
I know Southern Maryland is supposed to open in 2008, but has there been any talk of increasing the league to maybe 10 teams, then 12 in the future?
I believe Chris Carminucci handles player procurement for several teams other than the one he manages, the Atlantic City Surf. Not 100% sure on that, though…
Just read on the internet that Hurst just suffered a back injury in the last two weeks. Also, heard he has a bad temper. Some articles I read said he does not want to come out East either. The Lancaster Barnstormer players deserve better than Hurst…an injured player with a temper who doesn’t want to be here in the first place.
What you say is true. Hurst has a reputation and he missed time with a back injury. I’m not going to pass judgment on his personality because I’ve never met him or watched him play in person for an extended period of time. Also, Hurst spoke glowingly about Lancaster, so I don’t think it’s completely fair to say he doesn’t want to be here.
In the end, we’ll find out when he decides whether or not to sign.
You are right about not being completely fair about based on a few articles on the internet. I guess I’m just expressing frustration like the rest of us on the blog that we want the best for the current Barnstormer players who are trying so hard under difficult circumstances day in and day out. The are family or are “like family” to most of us in more ways than one.
I really appreciate your time and effort in the articles you write and for keeping this blog going. Even if I don’t post very often, I always read everything.
Keep up the excellent work Jason!
i’ve seen Hurst Play at the Clip with the Nashua Pride , he played well.
He’s also good friends with Glen Murray as they played together with the Nashua Pride.
And he is VERY OUT SPOKEN, but that can be good at times.
I’d love to see how an outspoken guy playes here in Lancaster and would get along with Klebe and management.
At the very least, Jason would never be at a loss looking for quotes
I guess with the Atlantic League, most of the players coming in will usually be either banged up or team outcasts. With this in mind maybe a bad back isn’t so bad? (just trying to be like stormin and think positive).
I’m with ya Scottie, Lets bring in a loud mouth too provide us with some good old fashion entertainment! Bosco knows we could sure use some right now!
Mr. B, you should of wrote ‘to’ instead of “too”
There’s an article about the Hurst trade here. It talks about him going to Camden, but he’s reportedly negotiating with Lancaster.
Well after reading that last link Jason posted it sounds like the Hurst really doesn’t want to be in the Atlantic league. That sucks because reading that article really made me like him a lot. Sooo it goes….
Keep in mind, that interview was done immediately after Hurst was traded. He wasn’t so resolute when I talked to him around 7 last night. We’ll just have to wait and see.
It seems like a few more of the players are becoming more outspoken on the team.
Take for example Jeremy Todd. He is quoted the other day saying some pretty bold statements, which these statements have their place and time, and I think that what he said, coming off one of the most embarresing outings by the Stormers, was perfect timing.
It is funny how when things are going bad, people get more outspoken. Like this site. We win games and no one really blogs a lot, BUT, have a few bad outings and the comments go flying.
I say bring him in and give him a try, see what he has. If it is not what we need, show him the door.
If you were a betting man what would you say the chances are we get Hurst? I’m getting pumped up for him now! I can’t wait for him to see how ridiculous BASA is!
I have no idea. It’s going to depend on how much money Hurst is offered and what kind of market there is for his services. I think there’s mounting pressure on the Barnstormers to get something done, whether it’s Hurst or another standout player.
Do you think this blog actually has any effect? Do people pay attention?
To expound on my last comment: Do you think potentially decision makers catch word or even read these blogs and if so, maybe feel any pressure from the paying customers?
People pay attention. The Barnstormers are very concerned about their public image, which has been extremely positive prior to this season. So I’m sure it bothers them that some fans have become unhappy with the on-field product.
Does this blog have an effect? I don’t know. This blog reflects a tiny portion of the fan base. I think the fact the team has a 23-29 record and has played poorly in front of large crowds has a greater effect. There have been some rough nights with boos and catcalls at the ballpark this season. That’s not good.
Overall, I think the Barnstormers have earned some leeway with the fans and media — and they’ve gotten it this season. But at some point you need to see a willingness to execute change. You need to be aggressive about it. We’ve reached that point. I’ll be surprised if they don’t make a sincere effort to upgrade the team for the second half.
thx dude!
Mr Hurst has the Attitude. The independent leagues straw that stirs the drink. If he decides on the Barnstormers, I hope he can still hit.
I just saw from the Atlantic League Baseball News site that Danny Bautista is fed up already in Camden after 4 games. Apparently he does not like the BASA.
Hey Danny, we know how you feel.
Danny better watch out. You don’t mess with theBASA. Even if he can get on with another team, all of the sudden the strike zone gets a whole lot bigger and that awesome diving catch will actually be ruled a trap.
I remember watching Jimmy Hurst in Nashua and at the Clip. In Lancaster a couple of years ago. I think he was in left field when a towering fly ball fell in for a hit. I think his knees were gone at that time, so I am sure he will just be a DH. Hopefully, the pop in his bat hasnt disappeared. We could definitely use the Jimmy Hurst I saw in Nashua a few years ago.
For what it is worth, Adam Wazny, from the Winnipeg Sun reported today Jimmy hurst will sign later today with the Schaumburg Flyers of the Northern League.
That’s true, although there’s more to the story.
In this league, there is always MORE to the story. Has anybody heard any more news on “Where’s Bautista”?
When you get all the details fill us in on “the rest of the story”.
