AT SOMERSET PATRIOTS
Jon Cannon 2-3, 4.67 ERA) vs.
Gustavo Martinez (4-4, 3.64 ERA)
The Barnstormers will again try to cool off surging Somerset, which has won seven games in a row. Martinez is 4-2 with a 2.84 ERA in his last six starts, including that debacle against the Road Warriors on Tuesday. Cannon was the pitcher when Lancaster and Somerset had their bench-clearing confrontation last month. He allowed three runs in six innings in his one start against the Barnstormers.
Pre-game notes:
It’s July 1. Here’s a look at the Barnstormers’ leaders in June (minimum 50 at-bats)…
Average: Dominick Ambrosini, .368; Jeremy Todd, .316; Danny Gonzalez, .281; Jutt Hileman, .276; Chris Van Rossum, .267.
Home runs: Todd, 10; Gonzalez, 8; Hileman, 7; Ambrosini, 6.
RBIs: Todd, 25;, Ambrosini, 22; Gonzalez, 19; Hileman, 19; Steve Van Note, 12.
Runs: Todd, 25; Gonzalez, 22; Van Rossum, 21; Hileman, 19; Ambrosini, 16.
On-base: Todd, .452; Ambrosini, .434; Gonzalez, .383; Hileman, .343.
Slugging: Todd, .704; Ambrosini, .642; Hileman, .531; Gonzalez, .526.
What do those numbers tell you? Four players are basically carrying the offense.
RECORD: 24-32
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Teuris Olivares (game-winning, two-out, opposite-field homer in the bottom of the 11th). It was Olivares’ second homer of the season. He entered the game with 10 extra-base hits and a .345 slugging percentage.
Olivares also threw out Chris Van Rossum at the plate as he tried to score on a ground ball in the top of the 11th.
WHAT WENT RIGHT: The Barnstormers fought back. Despite being banged up and worn down, Lancaster rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the ninth to force extra innings against the best team in the South Division. Although they didn’t earn a win, it was a character effort by the Barnstormers, who haven’t gotten much help from the baseball operations side of the organization.
*Russ Cleveland tied it. It was fitting that Cleveland belted the one-out, game-tying homer in the ninth. No player on the roster exudes more energy and charisma on the field. When things looked bleak, Cleveland came through. The catcher had both of the Barnstormers’ RBIs in this game. He is, coincidentally, the Q&A in Barnstormers Weekly Monday.
*Gustavo Martinez put together another strong outing. He allowed just two earned runs in six innings as he dropped his ERA to 3.56.
*Derrick DePriest pitched two scoreless innings to help force extra innings. The submariner should be a lock for the All-Star team, although you never know how this team gets chosen.
*Vince Blue had two more hits. He’s going to be one of the fun players to follow in the second half because he’s young — 24 — and loaded with potential. The Barnstormers need his contributions to deepen the lineup.
WHAT WENT WRONG: Barry Armitage allowed Olivares’ homer. The reliever retired Alan Zinter and Travis Anderson to start the 11th before Olivares ended the game on a 2-2 pitch. It was Armitage’s first decision as a Barnstormer.
*Dominick Ambrosini didn’t start the game with a sore knee, but he entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth. Again, when you take one of the top four hitters out of the lineup, the lack of depth shows.
*The Barnstormers had runners at first and third with no outs in the 10th, but failed to score. Jeremy Todd, Jutt Hileman and Steve Van Note were struck out by Somerset reliever Paul Thorp, whom the Barnstormers tried to sign before he ended up with the Patriots.
*Poor clutch hitting. The Barnstormers were 2-for-14 in RBI situations. Some of it can be attributed to Lancaster’s low team batting average and the fact its lineup is filled with guys who strike out a lot. The Stormers struck out 14 times in this game.
*The Barnstormers are 1-4 on this road trip, have lost six of seven overall and are now guaranteed a losing record in the first half. It’s their first losing record since they went 27-43 in the first half of their inaugural season.
*Lancaster faces Brian Adams, the league leader in wins, Monday night. Someone cue up “Cuts Like a Knife.”

See, I told you all that Ambrosini was a “very Nice addition to the team” didn’t I ?
Ambrosini is out of the lineup tonight. Swollen knee.
An interesting article on the new infielder John Wolff can be found at:
http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=505003
The numbers really aren’t surprising with Foster gone for what, 12 games and Burkhart missing 19 games. The last two weeks may have been different with those two present. How far out of the top 4 was Woods, since he played quite a bit?
Woods hit .180 with two homers and 10 RBIs in June.
That’s not production. Also demonstrates four guys can’t carry you even for a month.
If you think Clipper Magazine Stadium is a hitter’s haven, check out this game feature Reggie Taylor. It only lasted 4:35.
What a beautiful day for a game. They are wearing red again today. Ok guys. Lets go Stormers.
Stormin…we expect a full report! haha.
Let’s go JT..bust one out!
Hmmmmmm so Jeremy is banged up….hmmmmmm.
Wasn’t as deep as I first thought. Must’ve hit it off the end of the bat.
Not much from the top. Let’s hold them Martinez.
Hmmmmm. Even Dave needs a day off and looking forward to the all Star game as well. Any radio broadcast of the all star game ?
Radical where arrrrrrrrrrreeeeee you?
Ugh…its nice talking to myself!
Sorry… busy cooking dinner… Much rather be here typing away.
We’ll be sittin down in 5 so give me a half hour or so off… OK, Ha Ha. What s going on sofar?
The All-Star Game will be on WLPA.
Dave… are you working the all Star game?
I was just going to ask you that radical….I kinda forgot that it was dinnertime…haha. I am sorta doing the same.
thanks for the info dave…I will be tuned in at the ballpark. (as i always am!)
Think I’ll have my dessert here in front of the keypad
Another double play. Crap. Oh well, it’s 1.00 dog day.
I’ll have some dessert too…send some ova! Stormin..have a couple dolla doggies for me would ya?
Well, we got out of that one. Let’s score Stormers. I think I will have 2 dogs.
I will be doing the All-Star Game, maybe with others joining in. Not confirmed yet.
Sounds great Dave….looking forward to it!
I will be happy when this season is over. I read in the paper today that they are out of the playoffs. I hope they clean house in the off season and pick up some players who have some hunger to win.
Just gotta hate the inconsistancy of this team right now!
The Somerset radio announcer just said that the Barnstormers had a closed door meeting after the game last night.
Totally agree – I understand a team has up and downs but I feel like most of the time (this year) they are not even competitive.
They are not out of the playoffs. Just need to win the second half now. They need to turn
Wow StormingMad…you are giving up already? There is still another half of the season to go and we are not out of the playoffs. Its just the first half that just ended. We can still make the playoffs in the second half. According to you the season is already over….thats some kinda fan you are!
… turn it around NOW.
Oh – that’s good news. Do you think this group of players can do it? I am just not seeing the hunger to win. Maybe the closed door meeting will help.
The announcer also said that this field is called the jewel of the AL. I can see why.
Hey Stormin…..did you happen to see diamondback lady at the games this weekend? I thought she was going to be there as well! I also need to ask you a question about York….here’s my email…..ditzball4@verizon.net.
I’ve learned to never judge a team by how it plays when it’s out of the race. The 2005 team finished the first half in a 13-29 funk. It then started the second half 13-5. Of course, that team added some new players.
But the second half does bring new life and this season is far from over.
And that is why Nettles will be in the All Star game.
Makes sense
Nettles is probably the best all-around player in the league. Definitely the MVP of the first half.
OK Amy.. dinner is over.. what are we dong here, down by 2.. not a good start but it could be worse.
Dave, Does “RUSS” get the credit for any part of the double?
Agree with Dave about Nettles…. he has been the best all round player in this league for a couple years now. He sure would look good in a Stormer uniform..haha.
and yes I think this group of players…with a few adjustments here and there CAN win the second half. We just have to hope that ownership …..and BASA gives us a chance in the second half.
Yeah radical…we need to get this thing going. I just know that these players…esp the infielders are playing “tired” right now. It would be good to get them some days off and refresh their bodies and minds a little.
Dave…when are all Star teams announced and who do you think we be representing Lancaster? Did you say last night that Jeremy Todd will be there? Wow I guess my stuffing the online ballot box did the trick!
I know some of the guys just want to go home to see family for a few days, what if they are voted on to the team? Is there a obligation to the fans that voted them on in the firt place?
All-Star teams will be announced tomorrow. We should have Stevens and DePriest from the pitching staff.
Position players – I think Todd and Gonzalez should be locks. Possibly Hileman, Burkhart and Ambrosini.
I was just assaulted by one of the Patriots mascot, Slider.
Gee,
How did he know you just might be a Barnstormers fan?
I don’t know. Maybe the cowbell, maybe the hat, definatly the jersey.
He did assure me that he would be at the All Star game.
Dave,
You could write a book. The title would be:
You know you’re a Barnstormer fan if…..
Hey everyone, let’s help Dave out; fill in the blank:
You know you’re a Barnstormer fan if……..
Just saw your comment AA. Yes she is here. I will email you.
…you paint the town red, and it doesn’t involve alcohol (at least not initially).
…your favorite musical instrument is a cowbell.
…you hear “everybody hits, woooooooh” in your sleep.
…you use 19-3-34-8 as a password (Taylor-Bowers-Todd-Ortiz).
Good ones Dave.
…you drive three hours to see a ballgame.
…your favorite animal is a red cow with yellow hair.
…when you don’t know which jersey to wear to a game.
Ok guys. Our inning.
Fellow Fans,
Is there a score?
Thanks.
Way to go Russ.
Just tuned in. Way to go Russ, I’ve always liked him.
Looking forward to being in the booth with Dave on Tuesday.
Go Stormers!!!
Come on Dom. Sore knee asnd all.
Wait… what the heck did i miss.. Ambrosini in the game???
OH mGod.. tie score. Come On STORMERS, you can do IT !!!!!!!
Maybe I should get back to watching TV.. you seem to do better without me
Then go away Radical. If it helps.
bye
Crap, Woods is hurt.
Woods is staying in. Smart move?
Wow we just went out for ice cream..listening to the game on the radio…my hubby called clevelands homerun….(no really.) Very nicely played game……
I’m back… Russ hit a homer… isn’t he the best… guess I’ll have to wear my Jersey all week!
ARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH. It looks like I will have to think about that…You know you are a Barnstormer fan if….hmmm.
Okay Barry lets hold them now!!!
If we hold them here, Russ leads off next inning.
Yes Radical..Russ is the best! (Except for JT of copurse..wink wink)
course
Hey O…maybe I need to wear my JT jersey…..
You know you are a Barnstormer fan if….
your closet contains more Game used jerseys won in team auctions than you can count!
Yeah.. that would be ME !!!
Hey stormin i dont hear you saying lets go Stormers….all i hear are Patriots fans yelling lets go patriots…you need to move closer to Dave!!!!
Way to dig down and get the out. So much for an early drive home.
And me as well…..
You know you are a Barnstormer fan if…..
…PTBNL is your most hated acronym.
…you cant get through a day without a Dave Collins fix.
Stormin..did you email me yet? Dont forget as I need an answer on something asap (before Tuesday night!) tanks.
Haven’t washed it yet.. it was pretty wet when I got it too… Afraid to wash off any good karma
Good ones pack!
…you can hear Dave Collins in your dreams…(ooh thats kinda strange!) haha
Amy.Give Stormin my address… via e-mail
looks like you two are telling secrets… I’m jealous:)
Come on guys… you really need this one and sounds like you really want it too. Nice try Chris.
Huh..you mean your email address…? Not selling secrets just need to contact him about something…
We were robbed by Jones again. He missed that foul ball by Cleveland the other game and he missed that one. Unless Dave thinks otherwise. He had a better view.
Yes Amy, e-mail… you don’t have the home address… do you??
Get a room….
Let’s go Barnstormers!
Can anyone post a score?
Please give me an idea about what’s going on.
2-2 bottom of 11.
Barnstormer site has a score of 2-2 bottom of the 9th. Not sure how current it is though.
Would be nice if BASA added quality to the team when we lost someone!
WOW, what a way to loose, HR in the 11th.
Tomorrow !
Tough loss guys… we’re here for you.
The only reason I think the call Chris was hot.
And then one goes out over his head. At least Chris tried and climbed th wall.
MLB update….Sox and Yankees both lost today
It sure seems the Stormers gave their all today….Good try guys.
I can’t believe they stayed with Armitage in the 11th..but we had our chances..the 3-4-5 hitters absolutely sucked today. Gee..as I say when guys are on third with 1 or 2 outs..you need to bring them home. Twice today they struck out the side with runners in scoring position. More damaging proof that Franks keeping Van Note as the everyday 3rd baseman has failed. As proof look at the stats Van Note is the worst hitter on the team of anyone with more than 50 at bats.He leads the team in errors…he’s a Gr8 Utilityman as he proved the last 2 yrs…but he’s not the total blame..we have 2-3 players that wouldn’t make any highschool team
No radical but I could probably find it..haha. Tough game guys.
This team has its flaws — and we’ve articulated them here — but it also has a lot of fight. Under the circumstances, this was a great effort — even though it didn’t produce a win.
How did the new guys do – Odom and Wolff? Did they see any playing time this evening?
We have had this same problem all season….hitting with runners on base. Dave could probably give us all the stats on hits with runners in scoring position…he clearly keeps track of that stat…everygame he tells us the numbers there. We can’t contend with those numbers right now….
It would be interesting to hear which 2 or three players you are talking about!
Good point Jason…they fought hard today.
Jason, it was definatly a good game. They battled back inning after inning. After last nights game I am glad to see this tonight. These guys don’t like to loose. You can see it in their emotion. After that home run went over, Chris punched the wall. He tried to climb the wall to get it. That shows fight. Oh well, long ride home. See everyone at the clip on Tuesday.
I am going to check out York’s stadium tomorrow. I think York plays the RWs. Might be a 22-17 score like Tabasco v Mexico. I hope
Team averages going into today:
Runners on base: .277
Runners in scoring position: .250
Scoring position with 2 outs: .211
Bases loaded: .186
I like their fight too. Who needs extra BASA players? GO get em Stormers.
I’ll say agin ..if Klebe does’nt give up his 3rd base project( Cuz he won’t admit he ever made a mistake)..and ODP starts caring I won’t be seeing the clip anytime soon…I know when I see a red herring..hey I’m speaking of a glaring weakness…basically getting stage struck with men on base. I’ll give my Cudoo’s to Russ today..I hoped he’s be up in the eleventh with 1 out.
IF you were going to replace Van Note with someone, who would it be????? BASA has not picked up anybody that can play better than our present starters. (Dom is the exception.)
The problem like I said..it all started back when klebe wouldn’t ask for any infielders and even left Delgado go etc. he was adamant Van Note was the guy.Now as we get ready for the 2nd half..let’s get it right..and as I feel it is going to happen our manager and ODP…BASA..aren’t going to change a Darn thing. Face it Camden is their team this yr. but believe me they’re praying the Stormers can win a couple games aginst Somerset.
Exactly….we havent gotten anyone…ANYONE…that is better than our current starters. We barely have enough players who can fill in …we still cant give the infielders any rest with any kind of confidence. Who do we put at third besides Van Note? Wolff.? No chance..not enough experience. Woods? That didnt work out well earlier in the year. And then who plays 2nd? We lack infield depth now as it is…and we have from the start. We cant put Cleveland there either…we still need him at catcher. There arent alot of options available to replace Van Note anyhow.
ODP needs Camden to be ‘their team’ this year. they have poor attendance compared to Lancaster and York and they need. They need the fan support!
But still, I believe Lancaster will pick-up some quality players for the second half and make a strong run. They’ll be in the playoffs. Lancaster’s gate makes too much money to ignore it.
Which makes it all the more puzzling why some effort wasn’t extended to get Melo. He could play 3 infield positions. Or did we not show him the money.
Melo would have been a wonderful pick-up for Lancaster. I like him a lot. I am actually shocked he is out of affiliated ball.
Amy..what I’m saying is..I don’t know about the rest of the bloggers..but as I said earlier you won’t see me at the clip..any after the all-star game Cuz I feel now that the name Clip Joint is fitting.I saw a documentary about minor league baseball on channel 33 including all the Eastern league teams and International league teams..plus the smaller leagues including the guest star Kevin Cummings live…hehe..our concessions are way more expensive..imagine…in Altoona you can get a foot long sausage for something like $2.50 and most stadiums a beer for $3.25 or less. Oh..forgot to mention the Pacific Coast league.
You know what really stinks… say we get a guy who can play 2nd/3rd and they really show some talent.. we loose them to affiliated ball. I know that is the point for these guys… to get signed but geezzzz as soon as we love em we loose em!
There is no sinister motivation at work here. BASA didn’t load up Camden’s roster. The reality is Frank Klebe got the team he wanted and that team was in place in February. The Barnstormers didn’t add a single affiliated player once cuts came down in March, except for guys from last year’s team (Foster and Henkel). That was Klebe’s choice, not BASA’s.
Well..Jason the the managers head should roll..and really I wonder if there’s anything in it.
On a lighter side the fireworks here in Mountville sound GR8.
Maybe Frank never heard of the saying “Be careful what you wish for…..”
Again back to blaming everything on Steve. If I was listening to the same game as you were he did not do any better or any worse that the other players. He was the third player to strike out in the 10th. That was after JT and Gonzales. Steve doe sa better job at third than the other players and he is the only infielder that can take the place of JT at first. Steve has great runs at bat and will be the first to admit that he is not seeing the ball correctly yet.
Yes Steve has 11 errors, Danny has 10. It is the nature of the positions.
It is much eaisier to place blame on one player or a manager but this team is working hard, they are not giving up.
Klebe has struggled and some of his player personnel decisions were questionable. There’s no question about it. But a lot of factors leave a team in this position. It’s never one thing.
Although to get back to the point..the past month we’ve needed replacements and we get barely above high school level players..while everyone in the league gets Gr8 replacements…explain that Jason?
You go girl… Maureen
Southernalfan’s scenario does sound plausible though. Why havent they stepped up to force someone better than backup on Klebe????
I dont think the year is all to blame on klebe or all to blame on BASA
No, the scenario isn’t plausible. And it gives BASA too much credit. You can’t just arbitrarily determine which players will perform the best in this league. Big leaguers struggle. A-ball guys excel. It’s not predictable. Plus, players come and go constantly, so even if you load up a team it will get picked apart.
You know you are a REAL Barnstormers fan when……
….you keep an eye out for that next addition to the team that is going to turn it around.
….you hit the blog first thing in the morning, check on it in the afternoon, follow the blog during the game, and continue to add posts to the blog hours after the game.
(Both positive attributes in my book.)
Well..it seems to me Somerset was wise to drop BASA…tell me I’m wrong and explain.
I think Somerset was very wise to drop BASA because I think BASA has shown it can’t find enough players to fill four Atlantic League rosters. Lancaster and York are proof.
Pack..I’m here maybe 40 times a day..and hit Mike Ashmores Atlantic league news as many times a day..hoping something will change…but..nothing but even worse news..
No, Jason. It is not predictable I agree. But you do give a team an advantage when you funnel certain players to one team and send a recent Harvard grad to play utility infielder compared to the Nivar sent to York, Bautista initially sent to both other BASA teams (I know he is gone.)
The players directed to Lancaster are not the type to turn the Barnstormers around.
I don’t know Jason…. BASA, in conjunction with Peter Kirk and ODP, can open up the purse strings to improve. They have chosen to NOT improve. Minor league teams release quality arms every day and I know a lot of these young men would jump at a chance to earn $3k a month. They do not want to earn $1,400 a month. Kirk and ODP could easily authorize BASA to spend more, but they choose not to.
Maureen:
My son is a huge fan of Steve’s. If you know Steve, please tell him my one teenage son loves to watch him play. My son met him in 2005 and he left a huge immpression on him. When we are at the games, sometimes all he talks about is how good he thinks Steve is.
Pitch, I love the blog and all of the information that I have obtained that I couldnt in previous years. (Besides the personalties here are great and the love of baseball of those people is tremendous.)
But this year, I agree nothing has really changed. Even though I have looked every day for that season breaking news.
I enjoylistening to the games, I enjoy going to the games. I enjoyed the teams run last year, I feel for the team this year. The only thing I do not enjoy about the games is Scott, his voice just gets on my nerves.
My Tudoo’s to Pack..we’re being sent players that couldn’t and shouldn’t be on High School rosters that’s my point.
I agree that the Barnstormers haven’t spent enough money and haven’t helped Lancaster improve. They wouldn’t pay Hurst. They low-balled Melo. These are facts, not opinions. But …
I think that’s different than saying BASA is purposely loading up Camden to gain fan support. That’s not true. The reality is BASA is really struggling to add players and money constraints are part of it. That’s why the Barnstormers haven’t been upgraded.
I could list six or seven players who “almost” came to the Barnstormers but never made it for one reason or another. They are trying, but they’re not succeeding.
I think Steve has made a big step up this year also. I was a NON-believer of his talents too. And at this point, his deficiencies would be less glaring if we had a little more offense on this team. I think he is still improving.
I talked with Steve once last year. He seems like a shy young guy who wants to play ball. My teenage son loves to watch him as well.
I think the problem is ODP won’t pay a decent wage even tho as I said earlier they have the highest concession prices in the minor leagues.
Jason, since we dont have all of the back room information that you do …all we can respond to is…how it appears to us.
And we get sent an outfielder to replace Foster who had few hits this year. And a backup at ss that is young and has played rookie ball. And we get 2 new pitchers that are out casts from elsewhere. It sure looks like we are last on the “to do” list.
I laid out the finances of Lancaster a week or so ago. Money should NOT be the problem in Lancaster or with any of the ODP teams.
If Lancaster draws 4,500 fans per game, and has 17 home games a month, and the average ticket price is $6.50, that is over $497,000 per MONTH. The salaries, if computed at a hefty 2,700 per 24 players equals only $64,800. C’mon! Don’t think we are fools. My attendance numbers are on the low side and my salary figure is quite high.
Don’t take us for fools. Some of has have a little sense.
And..not to mention their record that they use Government and local funds to start a team up..succeed and then in the past have sold those teams and moved on.
Don’t even get me started on concessions or the off-season activities that help fund ODP.
Remember the stadium deal????? We are not fools.
Jason, you should cover the finances more since it is a civic issue.
And how much did Clipper Magazine pay to have their name on the stadium?
pack,
I think Blue is a signficant addition. He’s a 24-year-old who was in Triple-A. You’re right. The team hasn’t made enough impact moves. I think it goes back to BASA having trouble finding enough players for four teams. If they’re going to fix a team right now, it will be Camden because it’s in the race.
Jason, okay. I will secede to your knowledge. I will put Blue in the good signing column. I trust you.
Jason..I like Blue..he had going into today only 3 hits but 5 RBI’s..in 5 games..if he kept that pace up he’d have 45 RBI’s to Van Notes 24.
Really Pitch, high School ?… Why don’t you go down on the field and take a pitch from DePriest, Steven or Lira? ( I’m sure they would LOVE to throw/pitch to you) Maybe play a few positions on the infield. Just stop being so insulting. They played some pretty dam good ball tonight. 11 innings… It’s a tough loss but give them credit where credit is DUE !!!
I know how we can raise money to hire experienced players to give our current players the help they need and deserve. Make up a few thousand of those shirts I suggested last night. For those of you who missed last night. It was t-shirts made to look like jerseys with “PTBNL” as the name, “911″ as the number and dark blue for “Code Blue”.
Look..I’m saying if I was manager..Van Note would be a vital part of the team as he was the last 2 yrs…hey..he’s the best Utility player in the league and that counts..but Klebe ignored that fact grom day one.
Pitch, why do you even bother listening. You do not like the players, the managers, the coaches or the owners or the league why are you wasting your time here?
Radical..look we get a guy that hit .203 in about 40 at bats in rookie league ball..come on …
I agree with you Radical. Comparing the players to high school players was definatley not fair. Our guys are doing the best they can day in and day out. They are overworked and as we all know underpaid. Go Stormers!
Maureen..I do like the players..especialy..JT..but with all the chichanery from the front office…even he feels he has to do even better which adds stress and then even he’ll try too much and his production goes down.
Several things. Couldn’t update the site until about an hour ago, so I’m sorry I wasn’t able to post the fairly light slate of news from yesterday until now.
A photo of Martinez, a photo of Woods…nothing big.
Secondly, the field being referred to as “The Jewel of the Atlantic League” was mentioned.
Perhaps the most impressive part of my chat with Jeremy Owens (‘05 Patriots) when I went down to Richmond was that he remembered the groundskeeper’s first name. It’s things like that — a guy two years removed from the league mentioning the groundskeeper by first name, unprompted — which serve as an indication that the playing surface in Somerset is second to none in the league.
And finally…probably one of the better Atlantic League games I’ve seen this year. Kind of funny that Cannon vs. Martinez ended up as a much better matchup than Stevens vs. Van Hekken
Pitch.. Don’t insult my boys… Give him a chance OK?
I am sure all the players feel pressure. JT is a nice guy and feels the pressure, but don’t you think all the players feel the same way and are frustrated?
I’m not insulting anyone..just stating the facts..gee..the team stinks..last at scoring men from 2nd or 3rd…and the killer..with the bases loaded..fewest Sac flies..thank heaven for Cleveland and Dietrick it’d be worse they seem to play the basics at least in that category. Cleveland has made me rock too at times Lol.
oh..I like Russ
I agree with Maureen…this is not Van Notes fault….i for one have eaten my words about Van Note…he was not my choice for third base from day one but he’s played well for the most part. and I agree with radical as well….high school players? thats ridiculous! These guys are doing what they can and dealing with what they have been dealt with as a team. They fought today and they will continue to fight despite what is happening. the only thing the players can do is play with the team they are a part of. It would be easy to give up but they havent. We saw that today! Losing happens…its how you deal with it that matters. These guys are playing hard…if you want to give up on the team and jump off the bandwagon (as it were) then go ahead and do it. If you want to stop going to games as well..hey go ahead and do that as well. If thats what makes you feel better…fine. There are people here who love the team…and if you cant see that well..maybe you arent really a fan ! (And when they start winning again…you will jump right back on that bandwagon!)
Autograph Amy..well…gee..all the hoopla it seems is over player treatment by me..why don’t you other fans join the bandwagon and put pressure on ODP to do what’s right and not attacking me..surely..the players would be better off. I think they’re charging top Dollar while providing an inferior product to Lancaster and York fans…come …on..
That fervor is what makes this blog great!!!
I think when “high school players” was used. They exaggerated the description. We wanted experienced higher affliatied players not someone who made it as high as rookie ball. I think that was another blogger trying to express a point but exaggerated a little. Just blowing off some steam.
Not attacking you pitchfork…there were no names mentioned…that was a general statement. I dont agree with some of the stuff going on but the players cant do more than they already are…I just dont see why you feel the need to insult them thats all.
Pack..I used that description..high school players because we lucked out once with Travis Hake a local boy who could play..but gee..3 yrs. in a rookie league..maybe 40 at bats?
Amy, Dave will admit there’s no mistaking the players failures with men in scoring position..every team in the league knows it..so it goes. With a man at 3rd with no one or 1 out…you need do is hit the ball to the outfield enough…we’re taught that in little league…geee what’s so hard. Today twice 3 straight strikeouts…you think that’s OK?
Pitch, I am not as close as some of the bloggers to the players, but I have to disagree with your use of high school players also. Jutt Hileman was chosen from a workout of “free agents” in an Atlantic League tryout and he has proven his worth. I dont have a problem with the effort the players we have. I have a problem with the effort given to support the players by the front office. That is where I think we agree, but I think you have described that problem differently.
After 163, maybe you do feel the players are at fault more than I
Alright..I’ll close for tonight but think about it..I love the team still..but they need to get there____ together..ok..Adios
Hey Pitch…keep up the fever….have a good night
Pitch…why are you addressing that comment to me? I do not think that is ok but what do you want me to say?
See y’all 2morrow…
No High School remarks… OK ?
Comment 163… No pitchfork, that’s Great pitching!
Ok, I am going to post my two cents into this as I just got back to a computer. I am only speaking for myself. I don’t blame the players. They are doing the best they can. Yes, I feel there are about 6 guys on the team who do not have the talent to be playing in this league. They are over their head for this league. But one thing I have seen is not one player quitting. They bust their butts and do the best they can. No one should be blaming the players on this team. Also, these players are tired (because of no help) and have all the right to take it easy and they don’t.
There is a couple reason this team is as bad as it is right now. One is Frank’s managing but I am not going to get into that on this post. The biggest problem is ODP/BASA. I have to disagree with Jason on this some. You never know how a player is going to do. They may have a hard time or they may do great. But by looking at stats from the past, you can get an idea who is good and who is not. Most times if a player hit .300 for 6 years then the odds are he will hit around .300. He may have a bad year but most times he will be around .300. The same can be said about a bad players. The reason why I think (others do also) BASA/ODP wants Camden to win is not hard to see. Of all the teams ODP owns in the AL, Camden has the lowest drawing crowd (It would even be worst if they were a bad team). When they lose a player they get a new player right away. Look at the history this year. When they lost the catcher to the Dodgers, they had one in a couple of days. When Tim Cain gets let go by the Ducks and then just a couple of days later Camden get him even though we needed a guy. There are many more examples like this. Look at the stats and history (level of play) of the players Camden gets and then look at who we get (Remember we draw good at the gate and just won the championship last year). We been waiting for help and are still waiting and Camden just keeps getting the players when they need them with no wait. It is not hard to see all this. I will follow the Barntormers and hope they win but I will always know that the deck is stack against them and that this league has become a JOKE!!!!!! because of ODP/BASA.
Just got home. One thing I would like everyone to know about Steve. He was being heckled from the start of warmups by fans in their left field picnic area. They even went to the point of mentioning his number during a live question during the game. These guys were loud and as the beers increased, so did the volume of the rude comments. Steve handled himself very professionally.
After seeing the way they treated the Somerset fans (signing autographs, posing for pictures) I am proud to be a Barnstormer fan. Several of the players came over and said hi to my wife and I. You can see they appreciated us coming to see them play. I even had a chat with my favorite player and AA’s favorite. I even joked with him and told him I was working on a way to take the field to Lancaster.
I even had some fun with one of their mascots Slider. He said he was planning on being at the All Star game.
It was a great short vacation road trip. I enjoyed seeing the stadium and meeting Mr. Ashmore. BTW Mike, you can come to Lancaster, Mickleson does not pitch anymore.
Can’t wait till Tuesday. Go Stormers.
AA, I will email you in the morning.
I want to clear up my comment on High School players…I was talking about a few of our recent replacements..not the team as a whole and I’m sorry I didn’t make that more clear last night.
Pitchfork, I think I’ll wait for Jason’s interview with Wolff before I pass judgement, but why does he sound like he’s from a George Plimpton script.
Pitchfork. There really isn’t much to clear up. You slapped the team in the face with your insult an that’s all there is to it!
About Van Note…
The Barnstormers really haven’t put him in a position to succeed. They’ve taken a guy who was never a starter professionally and have asked him to play EVERY inning of EVERY game. They’ve asked the same of Woods, who didn’t play at all last season.
The Atlantic League screwed its players by taking away virtually all of the off days during the season, so it could shorten it by two weeks and pay less money in salary. Then, to compound the problem, Lancaster operated without a backup infielder for more than two weeks. It’s unfair, it can lead to injury and it hurts the level of play.
If the Barnstormers signed a good infielder, such as Melo, they could shift him around. They could give Van Note and Woods some off days. If those guys start five days a week instead of seven, they’ll play better. That’s just one of many ways the Barnstormers could have taken a small step to improve the team and they failed to accomplish it.
Amen to that!
About Camden getting players …
Yes, the Riversharks have gotten a few: Danny Bautista, Rene Aqueron, Alberto Castillo and Tim Cain. Yes, the Riversharks’ problems have been addressed more quickly than Lancaster’s because they’re actually in the race.
But who is Camden getting? Other players from other Atlantic League teams. One was lifted off York. Two were stolen from the Road Warriors and one was released by Long Island (and has pitched poorly for three years running).
How many good players has BASA brought in from outside the league lately? Not many. That tells me BASA is struggling to either find guys or to get them to come here because of salary reasons.
I agree with you about the schedule. It stinks. A lot of the weekend series start on a Saturday and end on Monday or start on a Wednesday and end on a Friday.
That is tough if you want to check out a road series. You can only see 2 games when you might of been able to see 3. And last year having Mondays off were nice not only for the players but for the fans. You knew you were going to get a break and if the fans need a break, you can guarentee that the players need one.
I am also not a fan of home at home series. Spread them out over the season.
I don’t know how BASA scouts, but my guess is this time of year they screen tapes and phone calls from agents and players. I’d also be surprised if the Detroit Tigers and Wash Nats are the only organizations making roster changes(i.e. Blue & Melo). So what do you bet given the pay scale and competion from other independent leagues the phone isn’t ringing.
Pitch–I stand behind you buddy! I think I was the one that actually started the High School joke. I feel bad because I see the ladies are all ganging up on ya! I made the joke out of frustration too. That is what is so great about the blogg. Nowhere else can you vent with fans like this. On the other side, it’s cool that people are backing up the players.
in the end it’s one big happy family…. and some of us have to be the jerky big brothers!!!!
In most cases would players who are coming to the Atlantic league rather play for a non BASA team? Is BASA known for being cheap or as cheap as you can get in independent ball?
Camden have gotten players from the outside also but I agree with most of the players coming from other BASA teams or Road Warrors (cain was from the Ducks). I will also agree that BASA is not doing their job. The problem I have is that the Barnstormers have needed players for a long time and they don’t get them while Camden gets them right away just because they are in race and they don’t draw as good as we do or even York. That is “BUSH” league and makes this league not legit. If a team needs a player you find them a player. You don’t work hard for just one team and not so hard for the others. They make it clear that they are working for one team right now. When Cain was release how come Camden gets him and not us. He may not be real good but I bet he will do better then Odom we just got that came way too late. I not so sure how the Road Warriors thing works out but I sure see all the others teams in the league getting players from them but the Barnstormers have not had one RW players come when we could have use the body. This what makes these whole thing messed up. The Barnstormers need to find their own players. Each team needs to find their own players. That is the way it should be. That is how baseball is done. When you have one group finding players for four teams then you have nothing but problems. Also, It really does not matter if BASA found 100 good players. You still have the problem of who gets what player. BASA is bad all the way around and I think Somerset saw that last year.
This is only the second year of the BASA arrangement, so it’s difficult to make strong conclusions about what people think of it or how it operates.
Last season the Barnstormers were able to fill their holes more quickly and they had more premium players. Some of that was luck: Todd and Gonzalez were released from affiliated clubs and fit in perfectly here. Some of it was because of Tom Herr, who found some key parts like Patterson, Knox, Ackerman and Crozier. Some of it was because there were probably more players available last season.
This season has been a perfect storm of bad luck for BASA. York, Lancaster and Camden have all lost really important players and it has been difficult to find adequate replacements. So you go back to the key points: BASA operates on a tight budget and it’s trying to fill four rosters at once. I think that has a lot to do with the lack of progress in improving the teams.
Play to win,
You’re right. The Barnstormers haven’t filled their holes quickly enough. But I don’t think you want to make an argument based on Tim Cain, who had ERAs over 6 in 2005 and 2006. Alberto Castillo is a better example. He was taken from the Road Warriors and put on Camden because the Sharks are in the race. He could have really helped the Stormers, but Lancaster hasn’t lost a reliever to affiliated ball — so it might be allowed to add Castillo.
I am curious why the Barnstormers didn’t add a temporary infielder from the Road Warriors when they were shorthanded. I think part of the reason is they were chasing Melo, who had visa issues, and they were holding off until that was resolved. When they missed out on Melo, they signed Mejia — but he only stayed two days.
I’m not going to defend BASA too much, but they’ve had some bad luck along the way here. There are several players they hoped would help Lancaster who never made it here for a variety of reasons.
or is BASA known, at all?
I’m sure players probably do a little reseasrch into a league that’s recruiting them. But we’ve had the ‘Stormers in town for 3 years and still don’t fully understand the BASA arrangement. I’m doubting that potential players would know any more.
So the end result of operating on a tight budget and a short supply is what, you do without.?
I shoudn’t say do without. They can sign the guys like, what did that one blogger say, the George Plimpton character.
So far that has been the result. It’s not the end result because the season isn’t over. There are 10 weeks and an entire second half remaining for the Barnstormers to be improved.
If fans are skeptical that the team will be improved, I don’t blame them.
BASA has more headaches on their hands – Mike’s site is reporting this AM that York just lost another player to Mexico and Gil may be out long-term with a (possible) broken foot.
Dude you’re about to hit 100,000 hits!! Better get Bosco in his party suit!
me, me, me!!
What if the end of the world happens once this blog gets 100,000 hits? Or even scarier… THE RAPTURE!!
i keep seeing it change between 978 and 999
WHAT! It’s all rigged?? I just saw that too!
crap! all our computers are gonna crash!
The counter doesn’t go up by ones. It’ll jump 20-30 at a time depending on traffic. There’s no telling who’s No. 100,000.
BASA is running it
don’t worry – i was keeping track.
it was me.
where’s my balloon ceremony and complimentary pizza coupon?
Bosco is delivering the coupon. He just flew out the window. You also get a “That Fish Place That Pet Place” T-shirt.
GODSPEED BOSCO! GODSPEED OLD FRIEND!!
Congratulations.
I’m so nervous! When is it going to turn to 100,000??
Bosco flying? I thought he was a dog.
Unless he’s got super-hero type powers like Hosehead had in “Strage Brew” after he drank some beer
You sure it’s programed for 6 digits.
at this rate, we’ll hit a million before the Clip does
I think it froze on 99,999 to taunt the masses.
See, it jumped to 100,073. All you guys hitting refresh momentarily fried the counter.
Why are people starting to float up in the sky? OH NO… THE RAPTURE!!
that’s not people.
that’s Bosco delivering me my t-shirt
100,088
YESSS, its like one big blogg jizz!!
Fly Bosco!!! FLY!!
Fly you son of a bitch fly!
I can’t believe Stormin’ missed this. I thought he’d be standing by with champagne.
Picking on Bosco!!! What did he every do to you? lol
Bosco stole my heart
Happy now!
I haven’t asked Bosco how he feels about his new-found celebrity. Chances are he’d answer “What’s going on, buddy?” since that’s really the only thing he says.
obviously he’s not a dog.
man – i really gotta read the comments a little more closely!
hahaha. Bosco’s such a character! Always playing his games!
My mother-in-law gave us a green cheek Conure because my wife wanted a bird that talked. Well, Conure are not great talkers to begin with but she does talk some just not as much as my wife would like. I love the bird. At first I was not sure I wanted it but I am glad. Even though she does not talk a ton, she has personality. When My wife and I are in the room, the bird will only go to me. Makes my wife mad.
Crap. I actually have to do PAID work and I miss the party.
It’s OK, Stormin’. We left you a piece of Barnstormers cake in the fridge, but all the Cylo pins are gone.
I think Jason’s counter is rigged like the All Star balloting counting.
Right now Joe Klein is in is office going Ini, Meni, Miny, Mo. I think that’s how you spell it.
I have a Somerset Patriots team poster for you Jason. It’s not autographed because I was busy socializing with our players then to stand in line for their autographs.
Ok. I might not have been 100,000 but I will be 200,000. At therate we are loosing (which means we get more comments) I better pay attention closely. It could happen befor the All Star break.
I think that last piece of cake started to get hard so you might want to cut off the edges. Plus I ate most of the frosting on it. I did leave you one of those dyed red rose sugar cake toppers that taste like chemicals when you eat it.
Thanks. Those are my favorite parts. It is what keeps me alive.
I’m kept alive with tubes that feed me all day. It’s actually not funny.
there’s one more piece of cake i just found behind the leftover spagetti sauce (which, btw – is starting to look more like Cylo every day. fuzzy and mushy).
This one has Scott from the fun patrol on it.
how come no one wants to eat him?
I’m sure Fun Patrol Scott will eat it! and he’ll probably even use the spaghetti sauce as cake gravy!
Congrats on 100,000 plus!
You know you’re a Barnstormers fan if…
You can recite the Clipper Magazine jingle by heart.
#1 son says “You know you’re a Barnstormers fan if you’ve listened to (me) so much that you know more about (my) family than (I do).”
Clipper Mag has a jingle?
…You are always singing “That fish place, that pet place”
You know you’re a Barnstormers fan if..
you hear the moo and you know what to do
Dave, I smell a book deal.
You know you’re a Barnstormers fan if…
- You know who or what Bosco is.
- You’re mad about the new peanuts the concession stand is selling.
- You’re still here!
The one thing that I found very interesting when I was in Somerset is that they put the words to the National Anthem on the video board.
Ooh I like post 237!
You know who originally “started” the rally roni sway!
Oh and Stormi….you’d be really surprised at how many anthem singers who can’t even get the words right! Listen to the performers sometime! That is insane…if you can’t get the words right….how did you “get the gig” ?????
Any word on the All Star rosters yet?
The person who started the sway was Mr. Charlie Wheatherby.
Here are the starters for the All Star game:
First Base – Who
Second Base – What
Shortstop – I Don’t Give A D#%m
Third Base – I Don’t Know
Left Field – Why
Centerfield – Because
Right Field – Not Sure Yet
Catcher – Today
and Pitching – Tomorrow
Hope that helps.
I haven’t seen the bullpen do the sway this year.
frankly, I think that’s the root of all the ‘Stormers problems
oh…so many things have changed….
let’s turn back the clock to seasons 1 & 2
Actually the new thing they do this year is something with their feet, legs, and arms when they do the “Everyone Clap Your Hands”.
Wow, Nettles is gone form Somerset. Now they need a third basemen. It will interesting to how fast they pick up someone since they do not have the BASA.
Sorry, should read “from”, not “form”.
Congratulations to Jeff Nettles. If anyone deserved a shot, it’s him.
Somerset can play Morban at third, if it so chooses.
That stinks that Nettles is gone! I wish he stayed at least to finish the rest of the first half to help beat Camden.
Jeff Nettles was one guy who clearly deserved a shot as Jason said. He clearly was the class of this league for a few years now . Well I selfishly am glad…because now we dont have to face him tonight…or the rest of the week. Best of luck Jeff!
Nettles last played affiliated ball with Double-A Norwich in 2002 as part of the Yankees’ system. I wonder how many players have gone 4 1/2 years between appearances in a big-league organization.
Thats interesting Jason…almost forgot about that stint!
Where did Nettles go? I can’t find a word about it ???
It’s on Mike Ashmore’s site. Nettles was assigned to Double-A Wichita (Royals).
Anyone remember the cartoon Pro Stars?
Ahh yes, the last days of the sports role model…
Thank you Jason. Hope he goes all the way up.
