Game 69: Ducks 4-2
July 18, 2007 by Jason Guarente

AT LONG ISLAND DUCKS
Donovan Osborne (4-4, 4.46 ERA) vs.
Gustavo Martinez (4-5, 4.29 ERA)
If the Barnstormers can win this one, they’ll return to Clipper Magazine Stadium in salvageable shape. Sure, they’d be 2-4, but they’ll be getting ready for a six-game homestand and they’ll be finished facing the Ducks on the road. Of course, winning this game won’t be easy. Long Island is riding a six-game winning streak and has the best talent in the league.
Pre-game notes:
– Osborne, 38, pitched seven shutout innings against the Road Warriors in his first start of the second half. The lefty spent parts of nine seasons in the big leagues and is most famous in the Guarente house for Game 7 of the 1996 National League Championship Series.
– Carl Everett has turned into a Barnstormers tormentor in his first season in the Atlantic League. The switch-hitting DH is batting .326 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 11 games against Lancaster this season.
– Martinez has struggled recently. The righthander has allowed 10 earned runs in 11 innings in his last two starts — including a loss against York to begin the second half.
– The Barnstormers have been outscored 17-6 in the first two games of this series. They’re 5-6 against Long Island this season.
– ALB.com reports that former Stormer Manny Santana was released by Somerset.

RECORD: 1-5 (30-39)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Donovan Osborne (8 innings, 2 runs). Long Island threw three consecutive former big-league lefties against Lancaster and won all three games. They’ll throw a fourth — Lance Davis — Thursday night.
WHAT WENT RIGHT: Gustavo Martinez pitched well. Facing probably the best lineup in the Atlantic League, the righthander went 7 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Two of the runs came in the fourth inning after a foul pop was misplayed and when a wild pitch was thrown with a runner at third. Still, a good outing.
*Lance Burkhart continued to grind out tough at-bats. Although he doesn’t always sport a high batting average, he might be the toughest out in the lineup. He reached base as the leadoff hitter in the seventh and ninth innings.
*Mike Woods excelled all the way around. He made a pair of nifty defensive plays and also dropped down a bunt single and scored in the eighth.
*Derrick DePriest pitched a scoreless inning and lowered his ERA to 1.07.
*It was the fastest 9-inning game in the history of the Barnstormers (2 hours, 4 minutes). That’s good. Right? The previous record was a game that included Clint Smith in 2005. Any time we can get Clint on the blog, we make sure to do it. One of the great characters in Stormers history. I could write a book about his 2-13 season in Lancaster.
WHAT WENT WRONG: The offense fizzled again. During this six-game road trip, the Barnstormers scored four runs or fewer in each of their losses. They scored just eight runs in this three-game sweep
*Lack of versatility (again). In the seventh inning, the Barnstormers had runners on second and third with two outs. Chris Van Rossum was forced to face Osborne, a tough lefty. Van Rossum struck out on four pitches. Last season the Barnstormers would have had other options in that situation — such as Keith Maxwell. Manager Frank Klebe doesn’t trust his bench, which is why he uses it so infrequently.
*The Barnstormers’ three left-handed hitters were held hitless by Osborne.
*The Ducks are 6-0. Think maybe they’re a little fired up after just missing out on a chance to win the North Division in the first half? People, including myself, bash Frank Boulton. But this is a fun team he put together.
*The Barnstormers are 1-5 and have lost four in a row. The second-half opening road trip turned into a disaster and Lancaster faces Long Island three more times this week — at Clipper Magazine Stadium. If you want comfort, some of this slow start can be attributed to playing a great opponent. Of course, this series also showed the Barnstormers didn’t match up well against the league’s best.
*How significant is a 1-5 start? Consider: If it takes 35 wins — a conservative estimate — to capture the South, Lancaster must go 34-23 the rest of the way. That’s nearly .600 baseball. It’s already a big hole, folks.

Nice pic. AA will be drooling. Go Stormers, Drown the Ducks.
Yes, thanks for the photo of JT. Hmmmmmmm!
Amy–It looks like he is looking right at you saying “I want that”.
No Mr B, he is holding his hand up saying “No more autographs Amy”.
Yes Jason, my Braves beat your Cardinals to go on to the World Series, which they lost of course.
Good one Stormin….JT is way too nice to do that though!!!
Seriously though Amy, you should buy him a necklace!
a nice thin gold one that players usually wear just to show him how much you appreciate him.
Sometimes ya get a guy like Osborne who throws a clunker. And sometimes a rookie like Anthony Reyes throws the game of a lifetime. Ain’t baseball great.
Stormers turn tonite.
When’s Reyes in “Where are they now?”
HUH? why would I do that? That’s not appropriate….
Has anyone else looked at Patterson’s numbers recently? In his last six appearances, he has pitched 9 2/3 hitless innings and struck out 19.
I like the pic cause you have Lance!!!!!
Updated to include Manny Santana getting released by Somerset.
Wow Dave..I hadnt checked Pattersons numbers lately but that ’s some great numbers!!! As usual Scott continues to perform and get no love from the Yankees!
Dave …. I posted this on the Charlie Weatherby In Reading and didn’t get any responses, so I’ll try again.
Has anyone heard about Readings plans for Charlie? They rushed him to Reading to pitch on Saturday 7/14/07 and he ended up pitching Friday 7/13/07. He isn’t listed as a probable pitcher for any of the upcoming games. Is he going to be a starter?
Barney,
Weatherby pitched one inning of relief on Monday. That’s probably why he’s not listed as a starter. I’m not sure what Reading’s plans are long-term.
If we’re going to break our losing streak and hopefully the losing most of the time syndrome and make a run at the 2nd half championship…Todd’s gonna have to start hitting like he did the last 2 yrs. and earlier this yr. just mt opinion. Don’t get riled.
I agree…and I believe last night I stated that JT needs day or two off. Somehow and some way we need to put someone else at first for a game or two. He knows it and we know it! Apparently the only one who doesnt is Frank!
I think Frank’s in a fix caused by ODP and Basa..we have Wolff and Booker ..neither one should be here along with Odom. I mean our bench is Wolff..Booker..and Russ. Russ I think is a good fillin…the other 2 I’d let go quick.
Why can’t we let them go and take a couple Road Warriors like other teams?
York just got the Road Warriors best starting pitcher..Ulloa..where’s the justice?
Ok..just letting my thoughts be known…I’m gonna leave now and listen to the game and hope for the best…Go Stormers !!!!
The reason we are not getting the players from BASA or road warriors is easy to see. We draw the best at the gate and just won a championship of the ODP/BASA teams. BASA did everything they could to see Camden win. Now they want York to draw better at the gate and the best way is to have a team that wins. When it comes to what is important for BASA, we are at the bottom of that list. These players have heart and doing the best they can. With BASA and Frank, it as been a long year. But like I said in the past. Maybe we can get one or two players and have a little bit of luck and win this second half. It would be a great story.
Before a team can take someone from the Road Warriors, it must lose two players either to affiliated ball or season-ending injury. Lancaster has only lost one player: Bo Hart. So it’s not allowed to put in claims for Road Warriors.
Russ can play first…there are also a couple others whom i am sure could spell JT. Its just a question of why they don’t do it.
So in other words …that if we lose another player ( Danny or Josh) to affiliated ball we can pick someone up from the Road Warriors….wow we are screwed either way…we can claim a Road Warrior only if we lose one of our best players….what a choice!
I LIKE the idea of seeing Russ at first, Especially from my usual seats !!!
Don’t worry Dave, I haven’t forgotten about you and the “special” delivery to the booth tomorrow night.
Don’t forget eveyone, we are baking for the team … lots of goodies should put them in a winning mood !!!
I’m leaving room…
Uh huh…Rad you are too much! I knew that would make your night!
You might have to move Tom into another booth !
Dave..what was that illness that Osborne had?
Dave, don’t leave till you get the brownies
Hey Rad…havent you ever read that sign on the gate that says no outside food? Hmm I can’t believe you are going to go against the LAW! haha.
Hey no score yet! This day and age that seems like a good thing!
LETS GO WOODS!!!
I believe i had the wrong one. He had Coxsackie, not Kawasaki, although I think, they are similar.
7.35 and i lost the feed.
anyone else?
I thought you said Kawasaki…what does it have to do with motorcycles..hahaha.
I’m listening to 1490am which is ok. sorry for being no help.
YESSS! That a boy Burkhart!
Kawasaki disease is a childhood illness, inflammation of the blood vessels and is NOT contagious. Coxsacki, on the other hand.. very contagious. Glad you clarified the two
No Score yet ??
Thanks Nursie Rad Mom! I had absolutely NO CLUE on medical type matters!
For #35… I’ll slide under the radar of any important people. Hey wait, the players are the most important people in the stadium and the food is for them so, who really gives a sh%t about any “security” trying to stop me… and you.
Have no fear, I’m sure we’ll be attacked in the parking lot. As soon as one player hears the food is out there… they’ll com’a runnin !
No problen AA… I think JT is looking right at you in the picture
the reason scott is not moving up is that the yankees suck. he needs to find a real team that will utilize his talents. i would love to see him as a closer for the braves.
I would love to see him in Baltimore… much closer to his favorite cook
pecan pies will be in the oven when i get home.
how about washington? they need the help and tommy can put in a good word for him.
I agree Stormin, Scott absolutely should be looking for another organization. One who can use/needs his talent, and it aint the Yankees… dito on the “sucks” .
Yes, Scottie needs to be on the East coast so we can go watch the “first Stormer” to make MLB !!!!!
Warm Pecan Pie sounds so good! Stormin you should sell some slices at the games. The Clip needs some kind of staple food thats unique to the stadium. They could even call it Stormins Pecan Pies or something clever. Even if it was only for the pecan season.
Gotta agree with y’all on this about Scottie…(wink wink Rad!) Yes Jt is looking at me as well! Haha.
I think a necklace would really show how much you care for him!
two pies are for the team. one is for my wife’s favorite player, and the last one is for my favorite radio announcer.
Oh… is LIRA getting a pie to bring home ??? I figure since you always go after his jersey’s like Bob to a bottle of rum !.. you owe me …ha ha ha
I would love to see Russ play at first too especially where i sit. that would be great!!!!!!!!!! Hey Rad, we could get a great view and he would be looking at both of us (wink wink)
Watch yourself girlie… Russ is mine !!
No, Russ is Mine
Mr B could you please reread post number 10 until you understand it? And then perhaps comment on rad and russgirls comments as well?
girl fight! YESS!
Ok, I usually don’t talk about this stuff but how about Murrys backside! It’s pretty sweet!
I’m going to get fat for the cruise. I thought that was supposed to happen during, not before.
I think he wants to to purchase jewelry for a man … who isn’t your husband.. hmmmmm not appropriate is right!
True Dave….I hope that the in laws recognize you after you eat the brownies and pecan pie!
Sorry Amy! you’re just too easy to fluster and I get a kick out of it! Don’t get me wrong, Spunk is a good thing though
I was just joking about the necklace thing.
Dave, you’ll have to run the stairs to get in shape after tomorrow night. I don’t use any low fat, artificial ingredients so enjoy.
my wife’s favorite player is not James. it is someone that has been on the team for a long time and is from a state where pecan pies are popular.
i wll do one for james for friday night, then one for our moderator. guess i better quit my job and start baking.
how about getting him a bellybutton ring? Thats not so inappropriate!
Yeah rad i understand him… (unfortunately) I dont think his (JT’s) gf would approve!! haha. I prefer what JT has already received from me and hubby! Now THATS appreciation!
Come On NOTER… Your turn
Cool gift, and VERY appropriate too.
Hey Mr. B.. you need another BEER
I know you are joking…and if you want to know what Jeremy recieved from me…ask him!
Ok no leaving guys on base!
Thanks Rad….I thought so too!
Get Lapointe outta there.. BIG BABY. For goodness sake, their winning not us !
lets go Van Awesome!
Damn it!!!
Wait, is the gift a baby?
JUUUUST KIIIDING!!!!
That’s a tough matchup for Van Rossum. I would have pinch-hit Jose — assuming he’s available.
No Mr. B… track her down .. introduce yourself and maybe she’ll show you the WONDERFUL gift she and her Hubby gave to JT.
Dave are the rumblings potential good news or bad?
Wow Dave…something big must be in the works the way this site and atlanticleaguebaseball.com are dropping little teasers for us!
Darn, I thought Dave was talking about thunder… guess not
God I hope its GOOD news…..although anything would be good news at this point.
Is the wonderful gift some kind of future prophecy? Now I’m curious. Does Amy have a gift from within?
Yes, that’s it.. she has ESP..N
Any hints? Maybe Sacrifice J Bunt knows something he can share?
Hey Amy, I see the All Star game is in Somerset… ROAD TRIP!!!
Thats pretty good Rad!
Anyone warmin up in the pen??
Like that, Mr. B… cute
Sacrifice J. Bunt isn’t me. Just sayin’.
We’ll now watch the pitcher get bludgeoned for a dozen more pitches until he is removed from the game.
Good news. Can’t reveal the rumblings, though, because things have a way of changing at the last minute. Hopefully, this will all hold. But, until it is official, mum’s the word.
Please, PLEASE tell me there is someone throwing down there… right?
If not.. I’m taking over the Mgr. job !!!
God Dave, you are such a tease !!!!
Understood Dave.
Jay–I was so sure you were Sac J Bunt!
Hey Daves imaging center songs on! Luckily I have my dancin shoes on!
YEAH WOODS!
I wish I could cop an alias and tell you guys some of the stuff that has happened behind the scenes. But, alas, there’s the whole getting fired thing.
The Ducks’ middle relief isn’t very good. This is the one place they’re vulnerable.
OK, this could be a good inning!
Yes Rad…the road trip for the all star game next year…lets do it! And yeah agree with 82.
Dave, Just tell me,
Russ, Dom, Jutt, Derrick, James, JT, Danny, Steve, Chris, Michael, Lance, Rob, Wolffie, Gustavo, Ross, Brett, Eric, Ryan and most of all Josh, aren’t leaving… OK
Sorry, I don’t know some of the new guys…
Amy, Think we can charter a Blogger’s bus for the trip??
See Jason’s #100. Double it in my case.
If it’s an alias… how will they know…
You could always pass secret notes and I’ll do all the typing, under one of my alias’
What does it rhyme with?
whining Panseco?
Wiring a manaber?
Oh Mr. B… you need another BEER.. again
What the heck just happened?
Maybe Trenton will move Patty up and get DePriest in ???
maybe.
Double play Rad! Hileman catch and then throw out the runner!
Keep up !
Hi Cat… are you out there some where ???
Come up with a name and blogg… wait, Are you Mr. B?
Ha Ha Ha
Nice job boys!
Who’s Cat? rad you need a beer!
Don’t get fired! We’ll be lost with out you guys!!
Way to go Burky!
No, Mr B…YOU”D be lost….Rad and I would go merrily on along with Stormin! At least we all know who is who!
Cat knows who she is… I’ll never tell
Wait…we actually have a pinch hitter coming in…its a miracle!
Oh geez!
How fast was that game???? wow Dave…you’ll be home early !
CRAP… WE lost again… time for baking folk. Remember Food equals VICTORY
I think using Jose in that spot was sound strategy. It just didn’t work.
Also, No. 108 cracked me up.
Hey Rad you have an email coming shortly!
I responded already !!!
hey Rad and AA i will see you ladies tomorrow in the staff lot with my choc. chip cookies, hope it helps the guys.
for the record, i am glad that there are rumblings for some changes. that means someone knows that things are bad.
i am sure as soon as it can be released, j-dog will let us know. but consider jason’s and dave’s position. if they say nothing and something happens, people think they are lousey reporters. if they something before it is released that loose the trust they have with the team or dave can loose his job. so they do the next best thing. they let us know things are happening and when it does’ i bet you will find it here first.
something the chew on for awhile.
Well, ownership knows things are bad. The team is 30-39 now, so it’s impossible to ignore at this point. I think the baseball operations side is trying to find solutions. I just wonder if it’s too late.
By the way, if York wins tonight, the Revs are also 30-39.
rub a little salt in the wound. i think york did win tonight.
york beat the first half champs 8-1. looks like they are hungry.
I hope the big change is Frank Klebe. It’s time to turn him out to pasture.
Ouch !
york took 2 of 3 from us and 2 of 3 from camden. next up, somerset.
we play york again next wed, thurs, fri.
Newark and Camden are both 2-4. It’s not unusual for first-half champs to drop off in the second half. What the Barnstormers did last season was rare.
There is a losing culture amongst the players.
Stormin, you going next week.. amy and I will be there.
I was surfing the net and noticed that my name came up. You are correct, I am not Jason but I do have a connection to the team.
I also want to let you know that Frank was my biggest purchaser of my award winning book series, “When to Know When to Bunt”.
I am working on my next series, “When Enough is Enough”.
has any team in the AL ever changed managers mid-season?
I’m pretty sure it has never happened.
Some good Barnstormers news: Somerset lost two of three to the Road Warriors. Lancaster is still three back. Of course, the Barnstormers also have the worst record in the league in the second half.
there’s the silver lining
Scottie.. lets hope the Barnstormers make history and let Frank go. I say you give Rick Wise the job for the rest of the year (if he wants it) and if he does good then he is our man next year (Again if he wants it). If not him then I say offer the job to Jeff Scott next year.
I’m at the stadium this AM for camp. We’re gonna have a few players visit with the kids. I’ll report back if I find anything out
Looks like Manny Santana may be going to the Road Warriors.
OK, who ever gets the info first wins a day out with Bosco.
Does anyone remember the commercial where you could win a day out with Mark MgGuire? There was the one scene where MgGuire was at a fast food joint with the winner. The scene was shot in slow motion. MgGuire made a funny face with french fries in his nose and the the winner who was across the table started laughing so hard that milk came out of his nose! It was thee funniest commercial I had ever seen and I never saw it again. I assumed they yanked it because it was a little over the top.
Strange, I posted a message early this morning. Confirmed it posted and it appears that Scottie responded to it, but now it is missing????
I took it off until the team officially released the information.
O.K. Thank you for the explanation.
Mr. B - Lycos
See it again here:

HAHAHAHA! Thanks BS! That commercial is the best!
Crozier is confirmed
Just got done a stadium tour including the locker room. his locker is the cleanest and neatest
Uh oh
Just saw jasons last post. 2 demerits for me too
