AT YORK REVOLUTION
Byron Batson (1-2, 5.40 ERA) vs.
Brett Evert (4-6, 5.50 ERA)
Is York for real? That 10-3 record is certainly impressive, but before anyone labels the Revs the second-half favorite, it’s important to note that York is still a desert for starting pitching. The three starters scheduled to face Lancaster in this series – Chris Steinborn, Bryan Edwards and Batson – are a combined 12-13 with a 6.31 ERA.
Even Frank Castillo and David Maust, the anchors of the rotation lately, have questionable long-term outlooks. Castillo is 38 and is playing pro ball for the first time since 2005. Maust is a reliever thrust into a starting role. It will be interesting to see how York’s rotation fares the rest of the way – and what upgrades are made.
Pre-game notes:
– Power outage. The Barnstormers have scored 44 runs in 13 games since the All-Star break. That’s 3.4 a game, which won’t cut it in the Atlantic League – especially at Clipper Magazine Stadium. What’s wrong with the offense? For starters, the home runs have dried up. The Barnstormers have hit 10 homers during this slide.
Here’s a look at the home run production in the second half …
-
Dominick Amborsini … 4
Lance Burkhart … 3
Jutt Hileman … 2
Russ Cleveland … 1
– Jeremy Todd and Danny Gonzalez are notably absent from the list. When two of your best run producers go into a prolonged home run dry spell, the offense is bound to struggle.
– Evert, perhaps the most enigmatic pitcher on Lancaster’s enigmatic staff, will try to cool off York. In his last two starts, the righthander is 0-2 with 11 walks in nine innings.
– Batson is probably best suited for the bullpen. The righthander is 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA in four starts this season.
– York has won 15 of 19 and is the hottest team in the Atlantic League. They are 8-2 against Lancaster and the Road Warriors during this stretch.
– Revolution outfielder Peter Bergeron was signed by the Pirates and assigned to Double-A Altoona.
Lineups …
STORMERS (3-10): Mike Woods, 2B; Danny Gonzalez, SS; Jutt Hileman, CF; Jeremy Todd, DH; Dominick Ambrosini, LF; Felix Martinez, 3B; Lance Burkhart, C; Eric Crozier, 1b; Chris Van Rossum, RF.
REVOLUTION (10-3): Keoni DeRenne, 2B; Rayner Bautista, SS; Nate Espy, DH; Justin Singleton, CF; Matt Dryer, 1B; Jason Aspito, RF; Greg Brown, C; Luis Cotto, 3B; Kaz Tanaka, LF.
Scoring summary:
FINAL: Revolution 10, Barnstormers 4
Stormers 1st: Gonzalez’s groundout scores Woods.
Barnstormers lead 1-0.
Revs 1st: Espy’s home run scores Bautista. Singleton hits solo home run.
Revolution leads 3-1.
Revs 2nd: Bautista’s double scores DeRenne. Dryer’s single scores Bautista.
Revolution leads 5-1.
Revs 3rd: Bautista’s sacrifice fly scores Tanaka.
Revolution leads 6-1.
Revs 4th: Aspito’s single scores Singleton.
Revolution leads 7-1.
Revs 6th: Espy scores on Martinez’s throwing error. Cotto’s single scores Aspito.
Revolution leads 9-1.
Revs 7th: Bautista hits solo home run.
Revolution leads 10-1.
Stormers 8th: Gonzalez’s single scores Crozier and Van Rossum. Hileman’s single scores Woods. Revolution leads 10-4.
RECORD: 3-11 (32-45)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Rayner Bautista (2-for-4, 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs). Bautista gets the nod over Byron Batson mostly because I refuse to select the opposing team’s starter four games in a row. Bautista, by the way, is hitting .360 this month.
WHAT WENT RIGHT: Pretty soon we’re going to have to cancel this category.
*Danny Gonzalez drove in three runs. He’s now second on the team with 47 RBIs. Former RBI machine Jeremy Todd is now third at 45.
*Dominck Ambrosini returned to the lineup after a two-game absence. He went 1-for-4 with a single.
WHAT WENT WRONG: Starter Brett Evert was awful. The righthander allowed seven runs in five innings — including a ridiculous 16 baserunners. Over his last three starts, Evert has allowed 16 runs and 16 walks in 14 innings.
*Reliever Barry Armitage struggled again. He allowed three runs, one earned, in two innings. The right-handed side of the bullpen remains a mess, except for Derrick DePriest — who’s getting roughly one save chance per vernal equinox.
*Inexplicably, the Barnstormers were shut down by another pitcher with mediocre season stats. This time it was Batson, who entered the night with a 5.40 ERA.
*The final four hitters in the lineup — Felix Martinez, Lance Burkhart, Eric Crozier and Chris Van Rossum — were a combined 0-for-15.
*Lancaster is 0-4 since manager Frank Klebe was fired on Sunday. The team has been outscored 30-5 in those four games.
*The Barnstormers are 13 games under .500 for the first time since 2005. To put this team in (brief) historical perspective, the 2005 expansion club was 31-46 after 77 games. No word on whether Troy Mattes and Cliff Smith will come out of retirement to help the bullpen.
*If you’re counting, the Barnstormers are eight games back. You hate to say it with 49 games left, but it looks like they’re finished in terms of contending.
ALSO: The Where are they now? page is updated. It includes stats for Vince Blue and Jason Norderum and Quincy Foster’s Ted Williams-like batting average.

They look a little upset. Did they not get any brownies????
My caption is—-”I cant believe Dave Collins isn’t in the booth tonight.”
Yeah, here’s a caption..
When the Hell are we going to score a run ???
Nice pic. My caption is Ross saying, “We are going to kick these guys butts!”.
Brownies were delivered to the lovely trailers before the game…. I wouldn’t let them down !! The security was very nice… pulled the old “my son is pitcher” routine… works every time. Gonna use it again in Reading this weekend
Has anyone looked at Patty’s ERA… .99 Yes, That’s point 99.
WOW, He is doing so good in double A. Maybe I’ll check in on Charlie too…hmmmm wonder if he likes choc. chip cookies???
“Matt Beaver is that guy right there”
Ross is saying, “hey, isn’t that Radical sittin there”. Barry is sayin “ah, I don know, maybe”… Eric is saying ” Who the heck is Radical”? and Russ is hiding in the back saying… ” Crap, I better break a bat for her real soon or she’s going to beat up the russgirl and steal it”
Or…”There is that guy who tried to sit in section 8 in the ninth inning.”
Crap, sorry for the wrong name thingie.
Lets see if it works this time.
Ross is saying” Hey, isn’t that Radical sittin there?”, Barry is sayin.. ahh Maybe, I don’t know” …Eric is saying… ” who the heck is Radical?” and Russ is hiding in the back saying… “Crap, I better break a bat for Radical soon or she’s going to beat up russgirl and steal the one I gave HER!”
OK, I’m done bloggin for a while… too many mistakes !!!!
Hey by the way …
Amy, got the MRI… back to the OR.
I like No. 13. Well played, pack.
I was trying to think of someone despicable. (said in jest, of course)
Patterson’s at .99. Goodness, what does this unbelievable closer have to do to get a good long look, jump up and down and do back flips after each strikeout!?
Go ‘Stormers!
So far… # 13 wins
Actually Rad I like yours!
Sydney–I like your “Alias” the best.
I think Ross is pointing to me saying “See that woman with the headphones and the clipboard keeping score? dont sign anymore autographs for her”
Or maybe he’s really saying “Why does she have those headphones on?”
hey Rad your right, but i think he is hiding from me since i want the jersey now to go with the bat.
Thanx AA… The first one vanished so I wrote it again… then like magic it flashed up on the blogg site… go figure.

In Bridgeport … just east of the city.
Amen to that Cougar…..hmmmmmm
I see. My wife does karate in Parkesburg. Just curious. She has 5 years in.
I thought you maybe picked your alias because of the irony of it being an alias for an alias. But I see you have chosen it for other reasons. Great for you.
Good or bad news Mark?
Interesting find….on the York Revolution site under “contact us”…there is a link to “Got a question for one of the Revolution coaches? Click here to email the coaches.”
No such link appears on the Barnstormer site. Interesting.
Nothing. It’s gone.
That SUCKS.
When I gave Amy a clue I said those very words… “google Alias” … she didn’t get it so I just had to tell her. … let’s keep it a secret OK. just between AA, me and dePriest
… I had to tell him… he was mad at me so I said “sorry, the typing didn’t come out the way I ment it”… Don’t know that he has forgiven me yet??
There you go Radical… a few more martial artists among us.
Amy… My age… middle of the night ??? I’m not THAT old…yet… Oh yeah… a wave… geezzz it’s hell gettin old
P.S… responding to an e-mail guys…
Lets talk about the GAME… Bondo and Nuke will be on soon and we don’t want them to think we’re not here for their brother.
So Come On BRETT, we REALLY need a win.
so LET’S GO STORMERS !!!!!
I have a good feeling that Brett is going to pitch a very good game and that the stormers will win!!!!!!!!! I will have a treat for them when they come back to Clip for their games
Yep, it does suck. There’s nothing I can do about it and no one seems to give a damn so I think this is a good evening to forget about baseball and go get tanked. Screw it.
Hey Mark nice icon, GO NATS!!!!
Well..Russgirl..your feeling was wrong.
But it could have been worse…can’t anybody pitch anymore? oh ..other than depriest.
oh Jeez ..control ..control
ahhh. Geez..get him out of there…I think Wise is as bad as klebe at pulling people.
I have a feeling it’s gonna be us 1 them whatever…gonna go watch TV and get drunk.
watch Pitchfork transform into Bob
#13 gets my blessing.
though it’s borderline plagerized from the caption 2 games ago. should have added just a little to it like:
“…There is that *handsome guy with the smoking hot wife” who tried to sit in section 8 in the ninth inning.”
You know it’s a long season when two fans make reference to getting drunk within about 30 minutes of each other.
you say that like there’s something wrong with it?!
*hiccup*
I have only one thing to say…..”yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!”
Okay, it is 7-1. Who ever has 14 in the pool is looking good!!
Maybe some form of alcohol should be the next Barnstormers giveaway.
everyone’s a winner with that giveaway
The second half is truly getting out of hand. Are there any long-term consequences to the team having a horrible year?
NO.
ask Bob about long-term consequences
What long-term consequences do you suggest?
Guillotine?
it involves cirrhosis and a 12 step process
Any Red Sox fan is well aware of this
Since the Barnstormers cant give away alcohol, they could give out flasks!!! Second half Rally Flasks!!!
mark it down – 5th inning of the York game on July 26 – we’re officially done with the season. No more false hopes or expectations. Just go to the ballpark and root the boys on and hope for a win.
But thinking there’s a shot at the post season is becoming harder and harder to do. Nothing is impossible – but it is highly improbable now.
I just mean that Lancaster’s fans will continue to buy tickets and make ODP millions…. i.e. subsidizing more stadiums and more teams in the AL.
Okay, you didnt like Rally Flasks. How about “Celebrate the Summer with Spiked Watermelons?” Free Spiked Watermelons under the Turkey Hill birthday tent!!!
i have now seen it all. russ just kissed ross on kiss cam. it is getting bad.
I like Rally Flasks. I think just about anything is great when you put the word “rally” in front of it.
Hey southernalfan, we are starved for baseball. We have the Phillies and Orioles locally. Of course, we are going to continue to show up and root on the local boys.
Hey, I enjoy the game. I like seeing the guys play in my neighborhood. It is more fun when they win but winning ain’t everything.
I am just getting sick of the half assed front office. The field is crappy, the audio is bad and the food quality has gone down.
“tis good the beer glasses have not gotten smaller or this Irish woman would be havin coniption’ with smaller amount of Blue Moon.
I’ll be interesting to see what attendance is like in September if the second half continues down this path. My guess is the record won’t matter much. Long-term, though, you can’t put a losing team on the field in Lancaster and not expect attendance to suffer some.
I thought it was low for the York PA announcer to have the York fans “thank” Eric Crozier for the free bread sticks. That had to hurt
Hey, Russ Kissed Ross?? that is two guys I would love too….. WOW they kissed?
Hope they do it tomorrow night
long-term, I agree Jason.
unfortulately, we live in a short-term world. Everone lives in the here and now (including us bloggers). So long as ODP makes their projections this season, they’ll be ok. And they’ll worry about next year, well – next year.
I’m surprised fans here aren’t ticked off that York — an expansion team — is about to be 11-3 and Lancaster — the defending champ — is about to be 3-11 under the same ownership group and baseball operations staff.
What does this say about BASA and the league in general?
It says the league is a joke. Think about it: Nobody wants to be in the AL. It’s like the Cornell of minor league baseball. It’s the backdoor.
I guess I cant be too ticked off because last year we won the championship. ON paper this team is better than 3-11. The new part of the team that really hasnt come through seems to be the pitching. Beginning of the year, we heard how great the pitching would be this years. I fault myself to buying into that.
Bottom line is baseball in this area is still new and I am just grateful it is here. (I cant speak for everybody.)
At some point, you have to look at the players and hold them accountable.
There are reasons that organizations don’t want any of our guys….. organizations don’t believe they can help them win.
Jason.. what it says it that ODP/BASA teams are puppets. ODP/BASA sees who has the low attendance and they do what they can to help them. Why is ODP/BASA going to help a team that draws 5,000 fans no matter if they win or lose. They are going to help the team that draws 2,000 for they get maybe 3,000 fans (because they are winning) a game. More money for the company. They are not dumb!!! If Lancaster starts to draw 3,000 fans or worst, then we will see the help and better players coming our way. It sucks but we are stuck with it. I don’t blame fans for going to the game. They love their baseball team. I really don’t see us winning another championship (unless we have a lot of luck) untill attendance drops to the bottom of the league. It really is a shame because we really care about baseball and deserve better.
PS: I am starting to get the feeling that BASA is doing it’s job. All year we been saying how bad BASA has been and they can’t do their job. I think maybe they are doing their job and don’t want us to get the right players. We wait all of the first half for help for our fielders. Then we get help but we also need help with the pitching and we have no help there.
York started with zero players. It lost Tike Redman, Wayne Franklin, Ryan Baerlocher, Adam Thomas, Matt Dryer and Dave Gil either to affiliated ball, overseas or injury. And it has still received enough players to start 11-3 in the second half.
Meanwhile, the Barnstormers get almost no one who wasn’t on the team the previous season. If Crozier hadn’t gotten released and if Hake wasn’t sent here, would everyone STILL be waiting for help?
Granted, some of this is luck because you never know how players will perform. But this situation also tells me — at the very least — BASA has been more attentive to York’s needs.
I don’t expect to win the championship every year. I don’t even expect to make the playoffs every year. I do expect a fair league and a company that will do what they can for us to win. We are not getting that from ODP.
I think we all agree that Frank was a bad manager but I don’t care who the manager is, we will not have a chance if ODP does not do what they can for us to win. We just won the championship and have the best attendance of all ODP teams and they put us at the very bottom of what is important.
But the players need to play well. We need to admit that many of them aren’t professional players (that’s why they are in Lancaster) and are not very good.
You know Rad in your comment #74 I wouldn’t mind that either.
Southernalfan.. I will agree with you when it comes to pitching. There is a couple of people that should not be on this team. We did get rid of some players when it comes to hitting and fielding so I not sure that is a problem as much as it was in the first half.
If you just want to look at the players aspect of this team then you have to look at the pitching as being the biggest problem. Do we have starting pitchers that we can count on. You need at least three pitchers, that no matter if they win or lose, that you can count on going to the mound and giving you a solid outing. Stevens was one in the first half. But we have no one like that now. Each time a pitcher goes to the mound, you don’t know how he is going to pitch. The middle part of our bullpen is a mess and needs a lot of work. The only part of the pitching that I can count on is the back end of the bullpen (Derrick DePriest and Eric Ackerman). Us not having the players has to fall on BASA/ODP.
Thanks russgirl. I thought you would enjoy that one too
… I’m surprised AA isn’t piping in.
Well, we lost another one but Hey, we SCORED 4 runs. That’s one hell of an improvement over the past couple games.
Come on Stormers… I think I can. I think I can. Keep on pluggin away, we’re here for you.
Sorry I missed the game again! Too many darn scheduling conflicts. I will catch up to you Rad someday and then you can take me around the stadium and introduce me to all of the other bloggers!
Hello all,
Just wanted to let you all know I was in Reading tonight for the game between the Phillies and Trenton.
Talked to Charlie, who as been demoted to Reading and is really upset. He is going on the DL tomorrow and having and MRI on his right shoulder.
Then I talked to Patterson and he is thinking trade to Texas, but won’t know until after the trade deadline.
Talk to both of them about Frank and will report on the air next week.
I miss doing the games with Dave.
See you next week.
looking forwards to those tidbits on info, Tom.
