AT NEWARK BEARS
Carlos Mirabal (8-4, 3.81 ERA) vs.
Gustavo Martinez (4-7, 4.27 ERA)
The Barnstormers haven’t won back-to-back games since July 9, when they swept a meaningless doubleheader against Somerset. They have a chance to end that unwanted drought against Newark tonight. The Bears, who captured the first-half title in the North Division, have won four of their last five games.
Pre-game notes:
– Martinez’s mercurial season has hit a downward turn. The righthander has lost his last four decisions. His last victory came against York on June 20. After posting a 2.81 ERA in June, Martinez’s ERA is 5.40 in July.
– Mirabal has enjoyed success against Lancaster. He’s 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts. Although his overall numbers are good, Mirabal is 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA in Newark’s hitter-friendly ballpark. So that’s an encouraging stat for Lancaster’s hitters.
– How much has changed since the last time the Barnstormers won two in a row? Well, Frank Klebe was fired. Vince Blue was traded to Bridgeport. Jeremy Deitrick retired. John Wolff and Steve Booker were released. Felix Jose was signed and left. Chris Brock was signed. Eric Crozier and Travis Hake returned. All that in 19 days.
No scoring summary for fear of carpal tunnel.
RECORD: 5-11 (34-45)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Dominick Ambrosini (4-for-7, team-record 5 runs scored, 4 RBIs)
WHAT WENT RIGHT: Lately, Ambrosini has been Lancaster’s most consistent and productive hitter. He smashed a two-run homer in the fourth – his 12th – and hiked his average to .322. Lancaster fans should rejoice that Ambro didn’t want to play in Bridgeport, where BASA originally assigned him.
*Jeremy Todd belted a three-run homer in the third inning and finished with six RBIs. Remember this guy? He’s a difference maker when he’s hot – which hasn’t been the case lately. This was Todd’s first homer since June 28. He was hitting .176 in July before this eruption.
*Travis Hake went 2-for-4 and scored four runs. It was a less-than-auspicious return to Lancaster for the second baseman prior to this night when he finally snapped out of it.
*Danny Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Most nights that’s player of the game worthy. Tonight it was just a footnote.
*Ryan Harris retired 12 of the last 14 batters to close it out. The righthander earned the second save of his 10-year professional career. The first one came in 1998 when he was pitching for Tri-City of the Western League. Harris said he wants to write a book about his lifetime in indy ball. Maybe this game will earn a page.
*Lancaster finished with 19 runs on 18 hits. That’ll work.
*Newark is the second-most hitter friendly ballpark in the Atlantic League behind Clipper Magazine Stadium – only it tends to favor right-handed batters. The Barnstormers took advantage.
*The Barnstormers’ all-or-nothing offense was in peak form. After being shut out twice this week and being held to one run in a 33-inning span, Lancaster erupted for a team-record 19 runs. That’s great and all, but it will take some consistency to get this team back to .500.
*Back-to-back wins. Although it doesn’t sound like much, the Barnstormers need a winning streak to change the course of their season. This is a start.
*Can you imagine a lineup with Reggie Taylor, Ambrosini, Todd and Eric Crozier – all lefty hitters – at the Clip? If that happens, it’ll be fun to watch.
WHAT WENT WRONG: Gustavo Martinez struggled despite getting his first win in more than a month. The hard-throwing righty allowed 11 hits and eight runs in five innings. What can you say? It was a hitters night.
YORK WATCH: The Revs defeated Long Island 9-5 in Central Islip Saturday night. They are 12-4 and lead Lancaster by seven games in the South.

“Mercurial”… must of learned that one in reportin school.
we are here cheering them on. have cowbell, will travel. go stormers. don’t worry aa, if they have them, we will bring you back cards.
good luck stttankaster hope martinez goes all the way next time and sucker punches someone like he did before or maybe kick a guy in the face again.
well see ya next time in york we will be waiting o and whoever said dominick is an ass was right he should have been thrown out yesterday he be in the majors i bet if he didn’t have his head so high up his butt.
Lighten up REV..I think the shoes on the other foot and and you need to get your head out of your butt so you can see the light of day.
I bet “Rev it Up” is the guy who started the York blog which failed miserably and this is his way of feeling better about himself. It’s to bad the York fans suck that much that the only place to talk baseball is on an opponents blog site. We’ll that and the fact that most are illiterate.
Rev-You should feel good about yourself! You can read and write! Pat yourself on the back little buddy! You are beating the statistics!
Thanks Stormin..I appreciate the help!
Ha Ha you said it Mr. B. That’s why I refer to them as ddddork.
Hope I get to listen ot the game tonight… got lots of baking for the Thunder in Reading, heading up to see Patty…

I like the determination in Martinez’s face. He has to win with that determination.
Hey JT….we love ya! Nice way to break out of that slump! Wahoo!
Ok Russ do it for Rad and Dawn…and in the process could you break a bat for Rad so she shuts up! (haha)
Oh and Dave..thanks for mentioning that about JTs last homerun….reverse psycology! Just watch what you say about the opposition..J/K
Rad–what does that say across his shirt??? Brownies!!!
Thanks AA… I given up on Russ. I’m sure I’ll get a bat but I don’t want to nag him anymore. I hate being a pain in the a$$.
Who’s shirt ???
rad, you a pain in the _ _ _. no way. wife took a nice pic of his backside for you. maybe he can autograph it for you.
Rad…you will get one…Russ seems to be the kinda guy who remembers promising you one! It may take awhile but afterall he did break three in that one game so you never know when it will happen…just pay attention!

WOW, nice job boys… glad to see the bats are finally hitting their targets.
I think their little chat with the ump should help in the future.
Heard about last night… If Josh or Derrick need a few pointers on fighting… I’m their girl
Oh God, having flash backs of last night. I think I’m having chest pain, must go fold laundry or something other than listen here !!!
Gee..Wise is as dumb as tommy and Frank..trying to leave the starter in to get the win…while squandering the game itself. Damn ..Martinez gave up 8 runs in 4 innings what’s it take to get a reliever in..or warming up? Score a few runs give a lot more hummmm.
I see Jason is leaving us out on own tonight. I guess he has some sort of life on a Saturday night since he is not updating the game. You would think he would know better than leave us alone. Especially if the Stormers start falling behind.
Cmon guys—pile it on them. Lets take a huge lead into the ninth inning later.
Way to go Steve with your double!!!!!!!! Come on guys let’s score another run!!!!!!!!!!!!
Way to go…they were lucky there
Still think we need a real manager..9-5 lead almost blown..and we need more runs now …will we get them?
Heck, I forgot that Dave in the land of no internet !!!! see ya after Dave.

must have been the special recipe in the pecan pies.
Great job guys!!!! Can’t wait til you are in at the Clip!!!!
Jason, thanks for the recap. Who would have thought 8 runs in 5 innings would still get you a win????
Mr. B– do you really think rev in york knows how to write–I am still trying to decipher his post???
PTW should like Ryan Harris’s effort. We actually got effective relief from someone not named Ross, Eric or Derrick.
And I know the JT fans were happy. Something for everyone tonight —well except for defense.
Great game. Great effort guys.
When the Barnstormers couldn’t score earlier this week, Rick Wise said “the worm always turns in this game.” I guess it turned tonight.
Great game guys after the first inning,JT way too bang the ball around. Stormin see you and the better half Tuesday.
WOW, hi Jason… missed ya
1terpkid—-tomorrow is a new day. Have a quiet night at home. Watch Sex in the City, Go to bed early and attack the day tomorrow refreshed.
double header tomorrow. we go for a sweep.
something funny happened to jutt tonight but what happens in newark stays in newark.

Come on Stormin… you can tell a Jersey girl… what happened to Jutt??
hey good job stormas glad to see you guys are back on track now we might have a running mate down the stretch at the end of the season.
i wish we had our own blog but I don’t have enough time really to do all that jason does here pretty solid work he has here.
sorry was just pissed at ambrosini earlier today used to watch him when i was younger in harrisburg and wanted to get his autograph but then I saw him play and changed my mind.
apology to those offended until next time keep cheering them on every team needs someone.
Nice Job Ryan ! Lookin good out on the mound
sorry, just can’t say about just. road trip privleges. looks like rain here. hopefully no rain delay. there is no covered seats here. actual attendence was probably 1,000. they never announced the paid attendence. out of the 15 or so skyboxes there were only 2 that had some people in it. someone from there side yelled ‘everybody hits, woo’. i had flashbacks. the pressbox is not accessable from the lower level, so you have to just wave at dave. nice view watching planes land at newak airport. they do have a small nice store with some cool stuff. the one thing weird is that the bullpens are behind the left field wall accessable through a gate in the wall. no way of knowing if anyone is warming up.
sorry, first sentence should have said ‘jutt’, not ‘just.
Stormin….yeah Dave did mention something about the everybody hits thing. He also said something about Lancaster fans being trend setters for that.
Stormin
I’m gonna pin Jutt in the parking lot and dig the out dirt on the road trip thing .
