VS NEWARK BEARS
Jose Garcia (1-0, 7.47 ERA) vs.
Rob Henkel (4-7, 4.94 ERA)
If the Barnstormers are going to put together a winning streak, this is the time to do it. Lancaster is about to start a nine-game homestand, including three games against suddenly pitching-starved Newark, three against Camden (which is 7-11 in the second half) and three against the Road Warriors. The Barnstormers are 24-24 at the Clip and have not won more than four in a row all season. That will have to change.
Pre-game notes:
– Gary Knotts, Newark’s scheduled starter for tonight, was signed by the Phillies and sent to Double-A Reading. The Bears have lost three members of their rotation, including Bobby Brownlie and Matt Sweeney, to affiliated ball. That’s a huge blow to the North Division’s first-half champs.
– Newark has also signed former big leaguer Ruben Mateo and has released Barnstormin’ favorite Joe Jiannetti. Jiannetti just never got it going this season. He was hitting .227 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 57 games. Maybe it’s the curse of Atlantic City. None of the Surf’s top players from last season panned out in the Atlantic League this year for a variety of reasons.
– Newark has an impressive lineup. How is this for a fearsome trio?
-
Javier Colina … .341, 18 HR, 65 RBIs in 76 games
Vic Rodriguez … .350, 7 HR, 59 RBIs in 77 games
Ramon Castro … .357, 3 HR, 21 RBIs in 48 games
– Pitching matchups for the rest of this series …
WEDNESDAY: Harold Eckert (0-0) vs. Josh Stevens (7-4)
THURSDAY: Delvis Pacheco (3-1) vs. Brett Evert (4-7)
– In case you missed it, York lost to Long Island 4-1 Monday night. So the Stormers are 6 1/2 back.

RECORD: 6-11 (35-45)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Eric Crozier (3-for-4, including go-ahead single in the eighth).
WHAT WENT RIGHT: The offense stayed hot. The Barnstormers have scored 31 runs on 34 hits in the last two games. It’s an incredible reversal for a team that scored one run in a 30-inning stretch last week.
“Once one guy gets a hit, the next guy gets a hit and that’s how things roll,” Dominick Ambrosini said. “We weren’t getting our hits when we needed them, with runners in scoring position. Now we’re doing a lot better situational hitting. That’s why you see the numbers come on the board as runs.”
“I always said the worm turns,” interim manager Rick Wise said. “It’s an old baseball cliché, but it’s true. We have too many good hitters.”
*The Barnstormers overcame a 5-0 deficit and built a 9-5 lead. The score was tied at 10 in the eighth when Crozier and Lance Burkhart connected for back-to-back run-scoring singles to win the game.
*Ambrosini went 4-for-5, scored twice and drove in two runs. He’s 11-for-17 in his last three games and has raised his average to .333. That should put him in the top five in the league.
“I seem to be hitting them where they ain’t,” he said. “Basically, getting lucky. You can’t possibly have 11 hits in three games and not have a little luck.”
*Jeremy Todd and Burkhart each belted two-run homers. Todd is officially out of his funk. His blast was almost to dead center and it traveled about 400 feet.
*Felix Martinez went 3-for-5 and scored twice.
*Ryan Harris pitched a scoreless eighth and earned his second win. The indy league veteran has become Lancaster’s most reliable right-handed reliever other than Derrick DePriest.
*Chris Brock pitched well in long relief. Although his overall stats are still ugly after a poor start, Brock could become a valuable part of this staff. His stuff is good, as evidenced by his 13 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.
*We figured out how to spell the new pitcher’s name: It’s Zack Parker.
*The Barnstormers have won three in a row. You never want to get too high over such a small streak, but things feel different for this team right now. It’s definitely more upbeat than it was during the Frank Klebe Era.
“You could feel the tension in the clubhouse for a while,” Crozier said. “It was unfortunate some things were happening, some little spats here and there. I think it was guys being fed up with how things were going. I think it’s good to see the weight lifted off a little bit. Hopefully, we can keep the blessing going.”
“These last couple of games have definitely given us a spark,” Ambrosini said. “The morale is great in the clubhouse right now. If we keep coming out and playing hard every day, this team can definitely get into the playoffs.”
*The Barnstormers know they have a chance for a lengthy winning streak.
“Of course we think we can put a run together,” Wise said. “We think we can compete with anyone in this league. We won’t back off for anyone. Losing is contagious and so is winning. If we get on a roll here, we can compete with anybody.”
WHAT WENT WRONG: Starter Rob Henkel struggled. He allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings before being pulled in favor of Brock. Wise made a smart move with the quick hook because the Barnstormers’ pitching staff was rested after two off days. What’s wrong with Henkel?
“He’s not locating his pitches at all,” Wise said. “He’s up in the zone and he’s a sinkerball pitcher. He’s missing his spots and they’re making him pay.”
*Reliever Barry Armitage had another rough night. He surrendered three runs in two innings and was on the hook for the loss before the Barnstormers rallied.
*For the Barnstormers to recover in this race, the pitching will have to improve. They can’t hit like this forever.
“Pitching is going to be the determining factor,” Wise said. “We have the offensive prowess to match up with anyone. We have to get our pitching together. It’s not often you give up nine runs and 10 runs and win both games. It behooves the pitchers to zero in, focus and make sure every pitch is close to where they’re trying to throw it.”

Now THATS a great picture…..
That is a nice picture!
Whoo Yee!!! What a picture!!!!
aahhhhh, aren’t they the cutest ??
Jeeezzzz, like I said yesterday… the featured person has their picture posted … but not when Lira is Pitching… I expect to see this cleared up by Friday.

We absolutely need more of those photos…hmmmmm.
Rad….you are completely insane….. I mean partial….jeez. You need to talk to the photographers and find out why they dont have any shots of Lira that lok like this one! j/k!
I would also like to see Lira. what is up with that? They should do this to everyone
I also think they should do something like this with the Catchers!!!!
Wow, and Joe was signing autographs on Sunday. Sorry AA, should of opened the pack and got it for you.
I’m sure one of the front office girls… [no names mentioned] could get the picture thing cleared up … right !!!
They need a shot of Murrys banging chocolate apple bottom!!
Stormin… thats no problem…maybe he will show up again somewhere and I can get him then. I am sure he will show up on another team somewhere. And btw wasnt Joe Jianetti someone who someone on here wanted early on in the year when we were discussing Steve Van Note? Or was that someone else. I know that someone on here wanted Jianetti in Lancaster?
Newark is getting killed by affiliated teams. They keep getting their pitchers pick up. You almost have to feel sorry for them
. I feel they would have run away with this league if they had not lost so many pitchers. Newark’s offensive is real good and scary. I just hope they go on a little slump while there in town. Lets also hope our bats are on tonight.
Lineups and Newark’s starting pitcher posted.
Lets go Stormers clap .. clap .. clapclapclap Lets go Stormers clap .. clap .. clapclapclap!
Lets win one for KLEBE!!
WHHOOO! We’re getting killed early!
At least will get first pick in the draft!!!

Lets see what your boy does jaydog! Bases loaded!
There are infinitely many prime numbers.
Proof:
Suppose the opposite, that is, that there are a finite number of prime numbers. Call them p1, p2, p3, p4,….,pn. Now consider the number
(p1*p2*p3*…*pn)+1
Every prime number, when divided into this number, leaves a remainder of one. So this number has no prime factors (remember, by assumption, it’s not prime itself). This is a contradiction. Thus there must, in fact, be infinitely many primes.
Wow, proof by induction. I am impressed. Do we want to go on to prove that the square root of two is irrational?
Obviously, the proof can be restated as (2p – q)2 = 2(p – q)2, which, too, is easily shown to hold, provided p2 = 2q2 holds.
(p – q)2 = p2 – 2pq + q2
= 3q2 – 2pq,
(2q – p)2 = 4q2 – 4pq + p2
= 3p2 – 4pq
= 2(3q2 – 2pq)
= 2(p – q)2.
So I guess in plain English this asserts that given two squares with integer sides and one having twice the area of the other, there exist a pair of smaller squares with the same properties.
Well thats on e way at least…
Tied game! …. Long game …. short life though.
Dave—I have to admit, I pulled a Phil Niekro and cheated. I googled the answer to your math problem. Since I’m coming clean right now I might as well also tell you that my name really isn’t Mr. Barnstormer either. I made that up too.
I’m not sure where I’ll go now. I guess where the climate suits my clothes.
Play To Win is so right. Our middle relief is putrid!!!
I’m pretty sure this isn’t the same game. It’s a second game and I fell asleep near the end of the first one.
what happened?
It was Joe Niekro (Phils Brother) that used the “contoured for a finger” sandpaper. I almost put him in my book. Not because of any gym candy but because of the magnificent job trying to sell his case on the mound to the umps.
if you add the era o all pitchers used tonight, do you get a prime number.
i think everyone had bingo in the 4th.
It’s good to see Canseco following his old team.
Way to go Dom on a great night as well!!!!! Come on Stormers!!!!!!!!
Insurance!
nice chat? more like a little disagreement.
Way to go guys on your win!!!! 3 in a row, lets keep this goin!!!!!!!!!!
wow. a real win streak.
york lost, yes.
You have to win the slugfests and the pitcher’s duels. A good win indeed.
Mom got “Bingo!” in the 4th, too. She won one of those Barnstormer ceramic hats given to last year’s season ticket holder as gifts.
There was a nice young boy in front of us who got a nice ceramic hat tonight from mom! His dad mentioned that his room is full of sport paraphernalia… cool. One more thing to add to his collection.
What a game! Thank you ‘Stormers for bringing us back from a five run deficit. That wasn’t an easy win. You all kept your heads into the game and your talents came shining through.
That “foul ball” call was phony! Tell the ump to take his sunglasses off so he can see the next time… LOL!
Go ‘Stormers!
dad
Vickie (“Hey you girl!”) was that less verbose than my other posts? LOL!
Wow, they announced 4500 and change there tonight with a straight face. They should really start using more plausible numbers, I heard a lot of people laugh out loud tonight.
No article on the Barnstormers in the New Era tonight. Couldnt you have made up something???
York loses … 5 1/2 back!
Apparently from #50 the Barnstormers make up their attendance.
From the wgal 8 news tonight, they seem to say that the Senators had their 5 millionth fan tonight. Sounds like they picked a name out of a hat at the end of the game to “pick” their 5 millionth fan.
4th inning as Eric Crozier is up bases loaded 2 outs, but I need him to fly out to get Bingo. As the excitement builds I here “we have our 10 winners”. At that point I didn’t have to make the decision of being a fan cheering for a hit or winning Bingo. Eric ended up striking out so I lost on both!
Just remember the fan could be dog. On Sunday the dog is the ticket holder and the owner gets in free. I think the way Harrisburg did it was fair. The have been advertising it as “the game we get our 5 millonth fan” instead of “be our 5 millionth fan”. The magic 8 ball is still sticking with Sunday as the day. It’ actula answer was ‘perhaps”. GO STORMERS!!!!!!
Finally made it to a game and finally tracked down Rad. I was hoping she would have some of her famous brownies on her, but no such luck.
Ultimate, your my hero !!!
First 26, then 24 and now 6.
I think your house has some really good karma around
I am taking a short break from baking since I did the thousands … ok, hundreds of cookies for the Trenton Thunder Sunday morning. Thank goodness for my double convection oven !
Hey Dopeydawn/Russgirl, where were you last night? You missed a very exciting game. DePreist did a WONDERFUL job
…. from what I actually saw, LOL. All the guys really pulled together played great ball…. I hate it when the score is so tight… I much rather have a blow out so I can relax and enjoy. These nails are to expensive to bite!!!
You’ll have to hang at the pen to see the newbee #6… Just let me say again he is “a very nice, nice addition to the team ” Ha Ha.
Hey Rad, you won’t see me till Thurs.night when I will have my cookies for the guys. Hopefully I can meet up with you before so i can make sure they get the cookies, maybe you will have to introduce me to the newbee. I did hear it on the radio last night and I was pulling my hair out. I know you can only imagine that one. But I am glad the guys did a great job!!!! I miss it!!!!!!!!
“These last couple of games have definitely given us a spark,” Ambrosini said. “The morale is great in the clubhouse right now. If we keep coming out and playing hard every day, this team can definitely get into the playoffs.”
If Ambrosini said it, I believe it. We are going to the playoffs. Woo Hoo.
#53: I’ll need proof to believe they don’t make up attendance. I saw 2000 people there last night. Maybe 2500.
int x = 0;
while( x 3000 )
x = ( rnd * 2000 ) + 2000;
That will give them an attendance between 2000 and 3000 which is far more plausible and they can use their existing random number algorithm. I’ll even give them the code, no charge.
Well Mark, I don’t know where you were sitting but from my many seats ( lots of socializing), I saw approx 5000 people there. I arrive at the top of the third to a very nice size crowd.
I was a little high on the attendence estimation. I usually guess within 200-300 people.
Oh yeah, even to people around me were commenting on the [surprising] size of the crowd .
oops… to sould be “the”
Go figure
I was looking at last night’s lineup and was thinking that it looked very good with the exception of an effective leadoff guy. Then I thought…wasnt Jutt listed as 2B-OF in the original 2005 Barnstormer information. So my idea is to leave the lineup the same, except have Taylor lead off, keep Jutt 3rd — just switch him to second base. (I know it has been 2 years since he played there, but…….)
That is my managerial thought for the day. Feel free to tell me how bad it is……..
Hileman’s not a second baseman. He played there in 2005 out of desperation because the Barnstormers lost 2B Aaron Herr shortly before the season started. Hileman is actually the best defensive OF the Barnstormers have.
Just watching him in the outfield and how he breaks for the ball poves that. Last night there were a few hit back that I thought there is no way he is going to catch it and somehow he did.
Jutt Do It.
Rad my section ( 23 ) is usually packed when there is over 4000, I saw no one for 10 rows in front of me. The first 4 rows had people then a smattering and there were two rows of people behind me. My row had just me and my husband. The same with section 22 and the Columbia section had 5 full rows. Scott was commenting on how slow it was compared to last Tuesday. The Coors tent was even empty.
Speaking of the Columbia section, anyone notice the woman give Murry the double finger for not throwing her a ball when she demanded? I was ready to throw the woman out. She was yelling at him and he just ignored her.
I was glad to hear Murray didnt respond. It is really wrong for that woman to act that way. Murray takes the high road but not responding—just ignore her and give the ball to someone else–she doesnt deserve the ball.
Maureen, if you need any help next time, I would be glad to help you escort her out. That was uncalled for.
Yeah them Columbia River folk are a scary breed! I hear they eat trash for breakfast. No literally, trash like old sticky plastic bottles and empty soggy cigarette cartons.
Maybe I shouldn’t think of moving to Columbia. Maybe Wrightsville or Mountville.
Stormin in Columbia would abbreviate to S I C ……..might be a sign.
Just kidding Stormin, I don’t know too much about Columbia. I’m just big on judging before I get the facts and I’m also a pro at making quick accusations.
So what I guess Im saying is… i’m a loser.
