AT YORK REVOLUTION
David Maust (5-5, 4.50 ERA) vs.
Gustavo Martinez (7-8, 4.63 ERA)
The Community Cup is on the line. If Lancaster wins tonight, it gains control of the “War of the Roses” prize and some hard-earned bragging rights. If the Revs prevail, the season series will end tied at 9 and the Cup will belong to no one until next season. In the bigger picture, the Barnstormers need this win to make the 20-game stretch drive interesting. Take a look at the standings.
Pre-game notes:
– YORK NEMESIS: Jeremy Todd … .387, 5 HRs, 17 RBIs in 17 games against the Revs.
– LANCASTER NEMESIS: Rayner Bautista … .300, 3 HR, 13 RBIs in 16 games against the Stormers.
– The Barnstormers will auction off numerous items of sports memorabilia during the team’s Guys’ Night promotion and game against the Ducks Thursday. Proceeds of the auction will benefit the Spanish-American Lancaster Sports Association (SALSA), a baseball league for inner-city youth.
Among the items: a baseball signed by New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle, a signed baseball from Hall-of-Famer and Lancaster County native Bruce Sutter and a Philadelphia Soul football signed by co-owners rock legend Jon Bon Jovi and former Eagles star Ron Jaworski.
– Amusing quote from Ducks manager Dave LaPoint at ALB.com regarding adding more players for the playoff push … “The tree we usually shake is empty. There’s not a whole lot going on.” Maybe that’s why LaPoint shook the Barnstormers tree and got Reggie Taylor to fall out.

RECORD: 21-22 (50-56)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Gustavo Martinez (6 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts)
SOME HIGHLIGHTS: Martinez dominated. There aren’t many pitchers in the league with better stuff than Lancaster’s righthander. His problem, as many have noted, is controlling his emotions on the mound. Martinez is an incredibly intense competitor and there are moments when it works against him.
“I’m too hyper,” Martinez said. “Sometimes I’ve got too much emotion. I try to control it a little bit more. When I get too angry, I lose control.”
*How good is Martinez’s stuff? Instead of watching the ball next time, watch Lance Burkhart try to catch some of the pitches. He’s one of the most polished catchers in the league and he has a hard time because of the movement. In this game, Martinez struck out Nate Espy, Jason Aspito and Matt Dryer – the heart of York’s order – in a row.
“He’s definitely one of the tougher guys to face,” Burkhart said. “He can be dominant. The only way I can explain it is to say the ball explodes.”
*Eric Crozier launched a 430-foot homer over the 16-foot fence in center field – which is 405 feet from the plate. It was one of the longest homers I’ve seen hit by a member of the Barnstormers. Ryan Minor would be proud (if he wasn’t a coach for York).
*Burkhart smashed his 17th homer as he continued his quietly amazing offensive season. He’s a perfect fit for York’s home ballpark.
*Jutt Hileman belted a grand slam in the eighth inning. The game had already been decided, but the homer extended his hitting streak to 14 games – longest by a Lancaster player this season.
*Travis Hake has fared well in the No. 2 spot in the lineup. He scored three runs.
*Mike Woods walked four times and scored twice.
*Danny Gonzalez turned in another three-hit performance.
*The Barnstormers are back within one game of .500 and they got their sweep of York. One problem: Somerset has caught fire with six wins in seven games and Lancaster remains five back. This is why it’s so difficult to chase two teams instead of one. Still, there’s an upbeat feeling surrounding the Barnstormers. They believe they have a shot.
“Sure, you start looking at the standings and start scoreboard watching, but all we can do is concern ourselves with winning,” interim manager Rick Wise said.

I understand from talking to James last night that he switched starting days with Martinez due to his use in Bridgeport. That is not official.
If there was a change, I’ll update it at the park.
As per that comment from laPoint…I found that pretty amusing…and I pretty much thought the same thing!
I wonder if Long Island will steal ice from our Ice Park this winter so they can say their’s is better?
This was a comment on Mike’s site:
Rumors circulating on Long Island have Dionys Cesar being sent to Lancaster as part of the Reggie Taylor settlement.
Any clue?
HEY RAD, check out game 105 post 115! Have fun tonight!!!
Stormin.. Not sure if the rumor is true but from what I understand, he is a hell of a good player. He plays mostly third and did real good in Mexico this year. He was the one I said I like to get in another one of my post if they were going to send us a player. The only problem is we only get him for such a short time. I know the league does not run this way but it would be nice to know that we have him next year with all the crap that has gone on here with LI.
From what I’ve seen, Cesar is about 30 years old, never got above AAA and has a pretty sporatic batting average with big fluctuations. His OBP and SLG numbers don’t strike me as impressive. There’s nothing on him after 2004, it looks like he hasn’t played much since 2003 and it looks like everyone has already traded him with everyone else. I guess we’ll see but if this is LI’s way of telling us to shut up, they can cram it.
Wow, if this is true PTW, third base is getting crowded all of sudden.
I’d say whoever posted that rumor has a pretty good grasp of the situation.
I wonder who the breadstick player will be tonight? I guess Gonzo.
Based on last nights stats on my scorecard…Pretty much everyone struck out once…but my guess would be either Woods or Crozier..each of them struck out 3 times…and both of them were caught looking twice!
But then again what does my scorecard know? lol
According to York’s radio announcer..if we end up in a tie for the community Cup..there is a tie breaker and Lancaster leads it by almost 30…runs.
Mark.. He has put up pretty good numbers (Not great numbers but good numbers). He put up good numbers at A ball most of his career. In 01 he had good numbers at AA and AAA. He also was having good numbers in 03 but then went to Mexico. He put up good numbers in double-A in 04 but had a hard time at AAA that same year.
05 and 06 he played in Mexico and put up great numbers.
2006 he hit .370. He had a .512 Slugging % and .426 OBA. He also had 42 steals. He has also played 2B,SS, and the OF so he can play anywhere.
I am not sure what his number this year in Mexico were but I hear they were very good. I have never seen him play. I am just going on what I hear and the numbers. He not going to put up numbers as good a Reggie but I take him over most people in this league. He should hit in the .300 and can play most positions. He also is hitting .355 with Long Island in the short time he been with them. I feel that Mexico and AL are very close in talent level and he has been one of the better players in Mexico.
Stormin.. I was wrong and he can play just about any position out there but I hear he like third base. If we do have him as a third then I see Martinez being let go. Well, off to cook before I listen to the game.
Mark, I agree that I don’t like the idea of LI sending us a player to shut us up but if that is all we are going to get out of it then I will accept it (It could be worst and we get nothing for this mess). He is probably the best player on their team with the exception of the ex-ML players.
The Cesar deal is finalized. He’s here and wearing uniform No. 19. See story above.
Go ‘Stormers! I just got home from the BP/Picnic/Informal Chat and I see the boyz are kicking it again tonight.
Let’s go guys. We want to win the Battle of the Roses!
I am impressed by their game playing during this series. Super job!
HE IS HOT AGAIN!!!! WAY TO GO LANCE AND STORMERS
AWESOME NOTER!!!!! WOO HOO!!!! YEAH!!!
ERIC IS HOT!!!!! AWESOME JOB WITH THE 2 RUN HOMER!!!
LET’S BRING THE CUP HOME TO LANCASTER!!!!
GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!
PTW: Thanks for the info, I’m glad he’s not as sorry as he looked on the site I was looking at.
So in the end, the whole Taylor thing looks like Lancaster’s fault for yapping about it before “it” actually happened.
LOL…sounds like another fun night with Curly, Larry and Moe in York. If these idiots are back again next year, I guarantee trash flying onto the field.
great job guys!!! let’s keep it going!!!!
Way to go Lance, Van Note and Crozier!!!!!
Let’s get the sweep!!!
way to go Steve!!! triple and now a double!!! AWESOME!!!
HE IS HOT TONIGHT TOO!!!
way to go Stevo
This just in from the Bluefish:
GM Bill Larsen and Bluefish Part Ways
Bridgeport, CT – August 28, 2007 – Mary-Jane Foster, CEO of the Bridgeport Bluefish, announced today that Bill Larsen will be replaced as General Manager of the Bridgeport Bluefish.
“This has not been the year we hoped and we decided a change needed to be made,” said Foster. “We appreciate the energy and creativity Bill brought to the Bluefish and expect that we will build on the successes we have had this year.”
Larsen was the second General Manager in the teams’ 10 year history. He has held executive positions in several Minor League clubs before joining the Bridgeport Bluefish earlier this year.
——————
I wonder what happened? If there was an incident sparking the “parting of ways” or if the powers that be just decided “that’s it”.
Bigger question on my mind is…will this mean the end of BASA in Bridgeport as well? One thing I never was clear on, which came first? BASA or the GM whose main focus would be on sales/marketing to fans and sponsors? Perhaps a decision was made that the two facets of the business should indeed be run by the same person/team. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
cautiously optimistic.
Way to go Juttinator!
WAY TO GO JUTT, AWESOME GRAND SLAM!!!!!
YOU ARE NOW THE HOT HITTER!!!!
Just to make you guy’s feel good,Danny Graves just blew a ninth inning lead to Somerset, final 3-2 Pats.
YAY! The Ducks Lose!!!!! And the Bluefish lead 5-2 in the top of the 9th
Check that, BLuefish won 5-2.
Wish our internet guys would get the pitcher’s name right.
It’s Bierbrodt, not Bierbaum.
Ok, now if only the Sox would step up….it would be a perfect night for me!
A good day for me is when both the Bluefish and the Red Sox win. A great day for me is when the Bluefish and the Red Sox win and either the Ducks or the Yankees. Lose. When the Bluefish and the Sox win and the Yankees and the Ducks lose, it’s a perfect day!!! LOL
Yeah, except for our playoff hopes, we want the Ducks winning in that series against Somerset right now, so don’t get too excited. Barnstormers fans are NOT pleased the Ducks lost, even if we are mad at their organization at the moment.
Oh well B.B. Not looking good for your Sawx. They just got Jobbad. lol
And yes, I am well aware that you are a BlueFish fan, but remember that this is primarily a Lancaster Barnstormers page, wherein we root for good things to happen to our own team.
Haha
Put Joba in that situation at Fenway and he gives up a 3 run homer. Write it down in stone.
Really Dawes, you know that, tell me when my lotto ticket will hit . LOL
Somerset’s comeback is a tough pill for the Barnstormers. Even though they swept York, they’re still five games out.
LOL….”Let’s go Stormers” nice n clear on the radio.
I can hear the Stormer fans loudly on the radio, very cool.
Jason, your gut feeling. Will the series against Somerset on the road (next to last series of the season) this year matter?
Who got tossed from tonight’s game,I hear “QUICK Draw” Blanton is working the game.
Way to go Travis 2 run double, i can hear the stormer fans too, awesome!!!
Hmm … gut feeling. If the Stormers are within five, it will matter. So, yes.
“…Hileman screams it at the Barnstormers fans and they all get out of the way…”
You pansies!
Dryer was tossed in the fourth inning.
Thank You Jason.
Cautiously optimistic…
Sweet!
I’m real pleased to have been wrong about this one. Way to go, Barnstormers!
Dang, you guy’s where loud and proud over the radio.
Way to go Stormers!!!! Great job guys!!!!
Way to go Stormer Fans, i could hear ya!!!
Way to go Gustavo, I hope James does well tomorrow night!!!! Let’s go Stormers!!!!!
Good job guys, a true team effort!
Hey, did I miss Stormin as the pregame interview??? Sorry I missed that.
Wow Steve hit a triple and a double… he has had a great series.
Wish i could have been in York to celebrate!
what a game and jutt’s foul just about took out the entire barnstormer fan section, on the way out of the park and on the bounce off of the step back into the field.
i would not have missed this game for the world.
one game at a time. next one starts tomorrow night.
I can’t believe no one brought a glove!
sorry, cow bell and megaphone, forgot the glove. at least rad bailed me out and brought an extra broom.
if anybody thinks that this ‘community cup’ thing didn’t mean anything to these guys, you should of seen them at the trophy presentation. what excitement, what electricity.
LOL…heard the megaphone, yeah.
Dave was talking about how the team viewed the cup “then” versus “now”. Which is pretty cool. Despite all that’s happened…or not happened….all season, they accomplished something anyone in the home town can appreciate.
Russgirl… I’m sure we could have scored many more runs but the guys were complaining about eating so many of the fabulous cookies you baked for them
they were weighted down.. so 13 was all we could get out of them .
I am sooooo proud of the Stormer players, they really fought hard and it showed out on the field tonight. Thanks for putting my name on the trophy first… “Lancaster” get it Ha Ha
two nights in a row they pick on ex-rev players as the breadstick player of the game, last night russ, and tonight travis. and two nights in a row the rev fans go home breadstickless. yes.
Hake’s not a good breadstick man. They were just trying to rattle the local guy.
Jeezzz Travis, I forgot to thank you for not making me any fatter than I am… Bread Sticks are all carbs and I don’t need them anyway.
Hey Stormin….that foul ball actually whizzed by my ear on the bounce BACK onto the field…believe it or not I could hear it go by me! (Made me shudder!) Oh and no more comments about “pro baseball” > Derrick was pretty funny with that!
what a fun time tonight…great game and it was awesome to be sitting behind the bullpen guys and talking to them,… and it was great to see Russ take the trophy and point it towards us when he held it up! I enjoyed hanging out with all of you…let’s do it again!
Rad …do you think you could get the trophy to display in your house? Haha. after all , it does have your name on it!
Yeah I think Crozier is the better choice for kman..he struck out looking again tonight…twice!
I’ll look into it !!!!
Oh and the bullpen really enjoyed looking at the magazine with the players photo shoot in it!
I’ll be over!!!
Here is the way that I see this race. The Barnstormers need to get within three (actually 2 1/2 or 3 1/2) when they start the six games against Somerset. It is absolutely essential that the Barnstormers take that series and get the tiebreaker this half. Then, it could go down to the final weekend. We’re still in this thing. The club just needs to keep playing like it did in York.
True Dave!
Yep, Crozier struck out looking twice (on balls both times). He also hit a 430-foot homer over the 16-foot fence in center field.
yeah, i put my foot in my mouth. i hope he knows what i was trying to say. it’s going to cost me some sweets. i hope he continues to rag me on that one, i deserve it.
thanks dave for having me on. it was fun. i was a little nervous.
Stormin…remember who turned down the chance first….Rad and I.
And Mr Guarente….I know he hit a freaking homerun…I actually do watch the game! Nothing against Crozier…I am just stating the fact that he has struck out 5 times over the last 2 nights…and seems a more likely candidate for the kman. Geez…
Hey Rad, I am glad the guys enjoyed the cookies. Glad your name is on the trophy!!!
Jason, I think you were off by a foot. From where I was sitting it looked like 431. But hey, who’s measuring. I am glad that my job does not require a lot of talking because I have very little voice today.
During the interview Dave was commenting on my blogging from other stadiums and during games. I did put a plug in for the website. And look, we are over 200,000. Next, 250,000. The funny think is, I forgot the web address because it is in my favorites on my laptop and my home page on my Treo.
I was little nervious during the interview because in the back of you mind, while you are talking, you are thinking, “Do I sound OK, Did I just say something stupid”. I know I said Lancaster wrong but Dave bailed me out and let everyone know that I am not originally from this area. Thanks Dave, I owe you a pecan pie.
After watching Dave work his magic doing the play by plays, it impresses me the amount of knowlege that he maintains while living on fast food.
Another day, another Barnstormer victory.
Hey Stormin’:
I was at the game on Monday. Were you wearing a jersey with #33 sitting next to a woman with a pink hat. I think in the second row of the 2nd to last section on the 3rd base side?
Yep. I was wearing Patterson’s #33 alternate jersey from the first year in honor of him being chosen as Trenton’s Fan Favorite Player of the Year.
BTW, the lady in the pink hat is my wife.
Now that I know what you and your wife look like I will try to track you down soon to say hello.
It would be a pleasure to meet a fellow blogger. I sit in section 20 toward the top at the clip. I am always wearing some type of jersey.
Yeah… but not # 17
Ouch. But I have Patterson’s “SIGNED” #33 game worn, not replica.
I’ve met Stormin’
it wasn’t that great
j/k!
Ouch, Ouch.
Let me make a prediction.. rain out tomorrow night… Kiddo is on F/P and it ALWAYS happens to her..
Wasn’t last night the best? Second to the championship night of course.
Guess the curse of the white jersey and cowbell is over .. Ha Ha
MORE COWBELL from now on !!!!
Rad:
Maybe if during the Gochenour commercials they eat your brownies and your cowbell is sitting on whatever appliance they are featuring, the curse can be broken.
Hey, that’s an idea.. along with the # 45
“Lancaster” jersey.
I had to whip out I.D. last night.. someone in the bullpen didn’t believe my last name is… Lancaster
Like I’d make that one up ???? LOL
Stormin’–sorry I missed your interview last night. Too bad there isnt a YouTube for radio, so we who missed it could listen to it.
Congratulations for having the courage to do it. It would be embarassing to make a huge mistake. You wouldnt be able to live it down.
I am sure you sounded like a professional. I am sure that you made all of the bloggers proud.
One of my favorite ways to shut up hecklers over the years was to simply say “Ok, you drag your fat arse up here and do it”, step aside and wait for some period of time while the heckler invariably tries to slide under the table.
Or, to put it another way, everyone loves to rip on the guy who did something, but at least he did it. Who cares what everyone else thinks.
I’m doubting a rainout tomorrow. At least according to the channel 8 weather, tire and hair care center. Besides, it’s “guy’s night”…think they’d know it was raining?
Yeah…they will be too busy oogling the phillies ball girls! Haha. No rainout needed for that…
The more I think about it rad and I and others missed a perfect opportunity to ridicule Stormin while he was “on the air” !!! It would have definitely been a first….heckling a FAN in the broadcast booth!
Philly ball girls….the inflection is the difference between a couple girls in uniform and a slap across the face. I hope they’re not really from Philly tho or no one is going to be ogling anything.
Philly ball girls….big deal.
BOXSCORE LINE OF THE WEEK
This week’s award goes to Texas reliever Wes Littleton for this little line:
3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1K
What’s so significant about such a line? Well, it came in the Rangers’ 30-3 victory over the Orioles last week, and he received a save for it. That’s right. Littleton received a save for protecting a 27-run lead. And people wonder why Off Base thinks the save rule needs overhauling?
But the save stat is precise and reasonable compared to the hold. This ludicrous statistic rewards relievers for “holding” the lead no matter how ineffectual they are. The game after Littleton got the save for protecting a 27-run lead, teammate Frank Francisco got a hold despite walking three of the four batters he faced and loading the bases before getting the hook. By the time the inning was over, two of the runners Francisco was responsible for had scored, turning a 6-5 Texas lead into a 7-6 deficit. His line was 1/3 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K and yet he got a hold!

Baseball and its rules

And thats the rules of the game. 3 innings is quite a workload for a reliever these days….well at least thats what we are told. “Back in the day” pitchers used to pitch day after day and their arms never fell off….
enjoy tonight’s game..cant make it tonight….boo reggie traitor for me…….or just yell, “sucks!” like we did in college after they announce his name.
