Game 109: Ducks 6-5
August 31, 2007 by Jason Guarente

VS LONG ISLAND DUCKS
Jose Espinal (0-1, 3.38 ERA) vs.
Josh Stevens (9-8, 4.05 ERA)
The Ducks and Barnstormers end their season series tonight. It’s always interesting to see how they fare against one another because they have such differing philosophies on building their rosters. Long Island, and its big-league approach, is 10-7 against Lancaster this season. The Ducks have outscored the Barnstormers 108-85.
Pre-game notes:
– An interesting comparison
Mike Woods in 2007 vs. Quincy Foster in 2005.
AVG.: Foster, .320 … Woods, .282
OBP: Foster, .377 … Woods, .372
SLUGGING: Foster, .445 … Woods, .473
OPS: Foster, .822; Woods, .845
As you can see, it’s pretty close. One big difference is Foster stole 55 bases (and was caught 11 times) and Woods has only stolen 10 bases. Foster said 2005 was his best pro season and Woods has basically matched it.
– Huge game between York and Somerset tonight. The Revs have a chance to trim the deficit to 1½ games with a win, but would fall 3½ back with a loss. Brian Adams, who is 14-2, is pitching for Somerset. The lefty should have at least three starts left, which means he could match Denny Harriger’s league record of 17 wins.
Scoring summary:
FINAL: Ducks 6, Barnstormers 5
Stormers 1st: Dominick Ambrosini’s single scores Mike Woods. Jutt Hileman’s sacrifice fly scores Danny Gonzalez.
Barnstormers lead 2-0.
Stormers 3rd: Woods scored on wild pitch.
Barnstormers lead 3-0.
Ducks 4th: Bryant Nelson hits solo home run. Edgardo Alfonzo scores on Dionys Cesar’s error.
Barnstormers lead 3-2.
Stormers 5th: Gonzalez’s double scores Woods.
Barnstormers lead 4-2.
Ducks 6th: Norm Hutchins’ single scores Ray Navarrete. Estee Harris’ single scores Pete Rose Jr.
Game tied at 4.
Ducks 7th: Reggie Taylor scores on Woods’ error. Alfonzo’s single scores Nelson.
Ducks lead 6-4.
Stormers 7th: Gonzalez’s groundout scores Cleveland.
Ducks lead 6-5.
RECORD: 22-24 (51-5
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Edgardo Alfonzo (2-for-4, including RBI single in seventh that provided pivotal insurance run).
SOME HIGHLIGHTS: Another big night for Mike Woods. The second baseman went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. He now has 28 runs scored in 25 games this month.
*Josh Stevens had an uneven outing. He allowed all six of the Ducks runs (five of them were earned). For one reason or another, Stevens just hasn’t been the same dominant pitcher in the second half.
*Danny Gonzalez also added two hits as he tries to cement his status as team MVP.
*Jutt Hileman extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
*The final five batters in Lancaster’s lineup — Jeremy Todd, Dionys Cesar, Eric Crozier, Russ Cleveland and Chris Van Rossum — were a combined 0-for-15.
*The Ducks won the season series 11-7.
*The Barnstormers failed for the sixth time to get their record back to .500. They also fell six games back of first-place Somerset with 17 to play. The race isn’t mathematically over. Realistically? It sure looks that way.

“Oh yes its Ladies Night and the feelin’s right oh yes its Ladies Night oh what a night” Lets win one for the ladies , Stormers!
Wife will be wearing “pink” if you know what I mean. Go Stormers, Go Revs.
Much as I hate to say it…go dddodooodoorrrrkkk.
WOODS!!
Good luck to all the ladies on the blog who decide to “Go for the Diamonds” tonight…
Tip: Don’t break your little plastic spoons!
Guy’s Night was weak as usual. The Philly Ball Girls were cute and personable. No free Wheatland Room for the selected few and no chances at expensive jewelery.
We did have a nice raffle, but it was opened to all men and women… Guess what I won?
I won a $500 certificate to American Lazar Center on Centerville Rd. 900C. That’s for hair removal… ha, ha, ha!
Lord knows that I don’t need anymore hair removal on the top of my noggin. Mom told me I could have her name lasered into my chest hair… Ahhhh… no thanks!
Mom will be “Going for the Diamonds” for the third time. She was close the first year, just not close enough. Blah!
Now, let’s go guys. Your efforts last night are to be commended. That 7th inning was a blast and I enjoyed the excitement and fan involvement. Come out battling for the “get go.” Stay focused.
Go ‘Stormers!
dad
Stormin’
Did you want copies of any pictures? I will be there tonight.
Curious as to why Haverbusch is a no show this series. Thought I saw him Wednesday. But he doesn’t seems to have disappeared yesterday and tonite.
Nice defense!!
I don’t know a score or anything, so for all I know he could be getting shelled, but Espinal put together a really solid outing in his Atlantic League debut in Somerset.
With Donovan Osborne out for an undetermined amount of time, he could be a real find for the Ducks…
Great photo….thanks
amy…great job singing that song…ever think of going on American Idol?
According to the York website…york up 5-3 ..top of 8… go revs
If anyone is interested,Scott Baker of the Twins has a perfect game going after 8. ESPN is breaking into their Washington-Syracuse football game.
York won 5-3….it is on their website…no win #15 for Brian Adams. Long live Denny Harriger and his win record.
I think Stormin’ will agree with me on the word to describe tonight’s game…
Deflating.
You could feel the stadium deflate after Long Island tied the score, and you could feel the team’s playoff chances deflate after Long Island went ahead. I don’t know about anyone else who was there, but as soon as the game was tied, I was 90 percent certain we were going to lose. The clutch hitting just is not there this season. Our guys seem to have all the talent in the world in games we win by 10, but can’t scratch across 1 run when the game depends on it.
Tonight was the gutshot.
I will still be there tomorrow and Sunday though…so let’s go boys….never say die.
Man-0-Man, what a ladies night… giveaways with manicures and massages for any lady who desired one.
Mom ended up just five feet to the right of the hidden diamond buried in the infield. Before she went out to the field, she actually told me that she had a “dream” locating a circle on the first base side of the infield. She was close… Look out Sylvia Brown. LOL
We jumped on the Quakers quick for two runs, but just couldn’t hold on. Very poor fielding tonight with three errors.
What the heck were those umpires looking at? There were definitely disgruntled players and fans in the stands. Why Dear Lord can’t we get a break? That one at first was just un-freakin’-belivable.
Nice crowd size tonight. Too bad we couldn’t put a win in the book for all the ladies in attendance.
Side note: My bother’s nephew’s children and wife were in the little fashion show held on top of the first base dugout roof prior to the beginning of the show. That was a pleasant surprise for mom and me. The kids were real cute all dressed up in their Ralph Polo gear.
Ok, so I’m hoping the Bluefish bring their brooms to York this weekend, for our sake as well as yours.
Who’s gonna bring a pan of brownies over to the Bluefish Clubhouse in York for me, to help them win????

I’ll give you my recipe! (Unless you already have it???)
York did not win. Somerset won, 6-5…at least that’s what the press release in my inbox says.
Adams did not get the win, though.
Yeah, the final score was bummer and I can’t say it was wholly unexpected. Crozier was awful and Cesar has to start getting throws to 1st…rolling them across the infield isn’t going to cut it. But it was still a good game with some remarkable plays.
pack…what song are you referring to?
Oh yeah..never mind..haha.
Oh and did anyone happen to see Denny Harriger and his family there tonight? He was. I also spotted Matt Knox talking to the bullpen guys early in the game. And Dave said that Andy Zwirchitz is also in town…
“Harriger can still see his record get tied, but there’s pretty much no way Adams will break it now,” said the guy up at four in the morning.
Saw Denny and got the chance to talk to Matt. That’s cool
Dawes:
If you can take some pictures of Parker tonight that would be great. Still trying to figure out my new camera so my pictures aren’t that great yet.
I chatted with Denny and Matt just for afew minutes… oh yea and Denny’s twin.. Ha Ha
Should ask Denny if he has that Red (missing) #24. Dominick could use it.
Dawes…thanks for the photos…they are awesome! I may have to get a few more!
awwww, let Denny keep the jersey. He deserves it after the ending he gave us last season
I agree with ya Rad. I really dont’ think Dom needs it.
AA you should check out the Scranton Yanks web page. you click on box [for todays game] and it up real time game action. Scottie is pitching right now
Not bad Mr. Patterson. 3 innings, 1 strikeout, and a 0.00 era. Nice start.
Nice job Patterson
Looks like they should have left him in for the bottom of the 9th.
