Playoffs: Bears, Patriots advance
September 18, 2007 by Jason Guarente

Game 1
Matt Beech (Camden) 12-8, 5.15 ERA vs.
Brian Adams (Somerset) 15-2, 3.68 ERA
FINAL: Riversharks 4, Patriots 1 (10 innings)
Raul Marval’s sacrifice fly and Denny Abreu’s two-run single were part of a three-run rally in the 10th inning that lifted Camden to victory at Commerce Bank Ballpark. Riversharks closer Lou Pote pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Matt Beech, acquried by Camden in a controversial trade with Bridgeport eight days ago, pitched eight innings and allowed one earned run.
Game 2
Rolando Viera (Camden) 1-0, 4.50 ERA vs.
Brandon Knight (Somerset) 12-5, 4.03 ERA
FINAL: Patriots 3, Riversharks 2 (11 innings)
Jose Morban scored on a controversial wild pitch in the 11th inning as Somerset avoided elimination and forced a decisive Game 3. With Morban at third and two outs, Alberto Castillo’s pitch skipped past catcher Brent Metheny. Camden manager Joe Ferguson argued that Elliott Ayala foul tipped the ball — to no avail. Somerset closer R.D. Spiehs pitched three innings for the win.
Game 3
Greg Powell (Camden) 6-12, 4.56 ERA vs.
Lincoln Mikkelsen (Somerset) 2-1, 4.24 ERA
Patriots 13, Riversharks 4
Mike Lockwood went 4-for-5 as Somerset’s offense awoke and blasted the Riversharks to advance to the championship series. Jose Morban added two hits and four RBIs for the Patriots. Teuris Olivares collected three hits. Both Morban and Olivares homered. Lincoln Mikkelsen pitched seven innings, allowing three runs, for the win.

Game 1
Harold Eckert (Newark) 5-0, 2.59 ERA vs.
Ed Yarnall (Long Island) 5-5, 3.93 ERA
FINAL: Bears 5, Ducks 4
Corey Smith’s solo homer off Joe Valentine in the eighth inning snapped a 4-4 tie and lifted Newark to a win at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Long Island trailed 4-2 heading into the top of the eighth before Ray Navarrete’s two-run single tied it. Reggie Taylor did not play for the Ducks.
Game 2
Jose Garcia (Newark) 5-0, 5.27 ERA vs.
Randy Leek (Long Island) 5-1, 2.23 ERA
FINAL: Bears 3, Ducks 2
John Pachot homered and Vic Rodriguez and Corey Smith delivered RBI singles as Newark built a 3-0 lead after six innings. The Ducks cut the deficit to one run in the seventh. Bryan Nelson homered and Ray Navarrete contributed a sacrifice fly. Long Island had the tying run at third with one out in the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t pull even.

Go Patriots, Go Bears. Patriots win it all, after all, it is an ODD year.
Lets go Patriots!!! Kick BASA in the groin!!
There’s nothing better in sports than playoff baseball. I wish I was going to one of these games tonight.
Maybe we can go to Camden. If we show up, we would probably double their attendence.
I have to work late tonight so I plan on listening to the Somerset radio station to pick up the game. Hope it works.
Just a random question: I know Zack Parker wore 22 for the Stormers, but who else wore it this year? Trying to get an idea of whose jersey I have.
RWF.
According to my records, Todd Pennington and Vince Blue.
I think the jersey was from the first year by looking at the pictures. The way to tell if it was is if there was a Helzburg Diamonds patch on the right sleeve. The first year jerseys did not have that patch. If it is from the first year, it would belong to Joe Dooley. If it has the patch, it is from the second year and I don’t know who’s it was. I would have to look back through my programs.
I don’t think it was from this year. If it was, it will have a 10 Anniversary ALPB patch on the left sleeve instead of a regular ALPB patch.
Right, forgot about the 10th anniversary patch. Thanks Dave and Stormin. And Stormin, check your email.
The # 22 jersey auctioned on Ebay was identified as Joe Dooleys, so it would be 2005.
If you want to listen to the Somerset/Camden game, go to the Somerset Patriots website. There is a link on the left side. WCTC AM Radio. The coverage starts at 7:00 pm.
Yeah, I noticed that question. Obviously wasn’t asked by me. The jersey wasn’t identified in the description at all.
I love how this site is more informative than the Atlantic League’s own site. Jason, excellent article again today. Do you think the team will really go through with cutting the ties?
Do you mean cutting ties with BASA? No, I think BASA will exist next season and, unfortunately, I think the situation will be similar to this season.
I do think the Barnstormers will cut ties with the vast majority of the players from this year’s team.
Yeah, I was referring to BASA
Ducks 1, Bears 0
Bottom of the 3rd.
Riversharks 0, Patriots 0
Top of the 4th.
ALB.com’s Scott Stanchak adds fuel to the Butch Hobson to Lancaster fire.
Next Tuesday night Sept. 25th at 7pm the grounds crew and some members of the front office will be host to York for a flag football game at the clip…. I think we should go out and show our support…
Bears 4,Ducks2 after 6. Victor Rodriquez with a bomb off Yarnell, and John Pachot 2 run double.
Beech: 8 innings, 1 run allowed for Camden.
I’m so proud of him! Of course, he’s had 10 days rest!
Beech pitched a no hitter until 2 outs in the 6th (right about the time I tuned in….grrrrr)
Ducks 4,Bears 4 top 8,Clutch 2 out 2 run single by Ray Naverette.
After his performance this season with the Red Sox, I think the ‘Stormers should pick up Eric Gagne next year..
He should be available, or dead if anyone in Boston gets to him first.
Another blown save.
3 runs in 1 inning
4-3 loss to Toronto.
Meanwhile, the Yankees lead 12-0.
I honestly never wanted to know what Bucky Dent felt like as it was happening….this is getting way too close to becoming just that.
Bears 5,Ducks 4 after 8. Corey Smith H.R. to centerfield.
Joe Dooley wore # 22 in 2006 until he retired in July (06) … He was my daughter’s favorite all time player (sorry Jutt) and a super nice guy, great with the neighborhood kids.
Since I was born in Camden… I’m rooting for the River Sharks to go all the way.
Oh God… did I just admit I was born in Camden, again ???
It was just the nearest hospital to Haddon Heights!!!
Bears 5,Ducks 4 Final. Darn.
Underdog Camden is headed home with a 1-0 series lead. That’s an interesting team because so many of its key playoff participants weren’t on the roster for much of the season.
Nothing is going to change next year. It will be just like this year when we kept hearing that new team-changing players were coming. They NEVER did. Let me rephrase that–one came late, then he ended up in Long Island.
Sorry for your loss Chuckered
One thing is definitely going to change: They’re going to have a different manager. If it’s either Herr or Hobson, it’s a championship-winning manager. That will make a big difference. Hobson is a terrific judge of talent and players absolutely love playing for him.
That’s ok Sydney,Hopefully for us,we can take 2 at home.
comment #29. basa at its best.
WOW.. it’s so quiet here today.
Think I’ll make a trip in to the Clipp, maybe buy something… for old time sake
: (
Jason, what about the Jeffs; Scott and Ball? I would think that they might both be in play, especially if Minor declines at SoMd.
I’ve heard Jeff Ball’s name mentioned, but only in passing. I don’t think he’s going to get the job. I haven’t heard any talk about Jeff Scott.
If not the manager’s job, how about either in a player personnel role?
Syd I was at clipp last night to pick up my son, from the football practice and it was very depressing….. No cars no guys…..
Tuesday night folks… Footbal so we all have to be there to support our team !!!Let’s Go Stormer Staff!!!!
*Hutchins walks and steals second. He’s there with no outs and the Ducks trailing 3-2 in the ninth. Jeremy Hill struggling to throw strikes.
*Hutchins to third with one out. Reggie Taylor up. He’s getting the Reg-gie chant.
*Taylor grounds out. Hutchins still at third. Ray Navarrete up.
*Navarrete grounds out. Ducks lose.
How sad. So Reggie got “two” extra games.
Actually, one. He didn’t play in Game 1.
The Somerset game is exciting. Actually, Brian Bender makes everything sound exciting. He has lots of energy.
The Patriots have six hits in 20 innings in this series. That’s hard to believe.
Yea Stormin, I agree Bender is really good.
Hey Jason,I wanted to let you know,Snoozeday actually had a story on the Duck game last night. I was shocked.
Yeah, I saw.
Do you know why Taylor didn’t play in Game 1?
I think he had some family buisness to attend too,but I’m not positive.
OK, thanks.
Morban scores on a wild pitch in the 11th inning and Somerset leads 3-2.
Jason, apparently he was enroute to the game last night. But wasn’t used by Lapointe.
Can Somerset hold them for the win?
Somerset wins 3-2, Game 3 tomorrow night.
Looks like it will be Lincoln Mikkelsen pitching for Somerset against Camden — the team he snubbed — for all the marbles. What a great story.
That is a good story,Hope Strauss racks him up a few times hehehe.
Wish I had time off to go see the game.
I am so glad that the LI Ducks failed to move on.
“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”
Virgina? I thought you wife’s name was Julie “
LOL
Somerset ahead 8-0 in the fourth. Looks like Bears-Pats in the final.
11-2 Pats. Well,it is an odd number year.
13-3 after 7.
Well,it’s officially Garbage time,Camden has cleared their bench.
FINAL: Somerset 13-4. Patriots officially advance.
Go Pats.
