Ramon Castro’s single scored Jose Herrera in the eighth inning as Newark snapped a 6-6 tie and took Game 1. Ruben Mateo and John Pachot each had two hits and two RBIs for the Bears. Somerset struck for a five-run rally in the fourth inning that gave it a 6-3 lead. Brandon Larson belted his second playoff homer for the Patriots.

Brian Adams (Somerset) 15-2, 3.68 ERA
FINAL: Patriots 8, Bears 1
Brian Adams, pitching on three days rest, allowed one run in seven innings to help Somerset even the series. Brandon Larson and Josh Pressley each homered for the Patriots. Pressley’s was a three-run shot that made it 8-1 in the seventh. It was Newark’s first loss of the playoffs. The Bears failed to match the Barnstormers’ 5-0 record from last season.

Brandon Knight (Somerset) 12-5, 4.03 ERA
Bears 5, Patriots 4
Keith Reed’s single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Newark to a win and a 2-1 series lead. With the score tied at 4, Somerset closer R.D. Spiehs entered. He walked leadoff man Ramon Castro and allowed a double to Jose Herrera before Reed won it. Herrera went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Bears. Mike Lockwood had three hits, including his first playoff homer for Somerset.

The Bears, trailing 7-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth, exploded for an eight-run rally to seal the series. Lincoln Mikkelsen allowed seven runs in seven innings for Somerset. He was pitching on three days rest.
TITLE SHOT: Newark became the second franchise in the Atlantic League to earn multiple titles. Somerset is still the leader with three.

Go Patriots!!
Sounds like a crazy game going on.
patriots win game 2, 8-1.
I heard there was an incident in game 2 involving the Patriots screaming and waving bats at the umpire. Anyone know what happened.
Absolutely was not a big deal. Lockwood got called out looking, and talked a lot of garbage at the umpire…certainly enough to warrant being tossed. However, he was not.
Thanks for the info Mike.
Bears win game 3. Bears up 2-1
thanks pack. i think the sooners changed spots in the poll with your gators. from 4 to 3. could we meet for a national title?
Good job Keith! Let’s go Newark… You can do it!
Hey stormin, that would be great!!! I would love to see that and if we get that far we would deserve the slot. After Auburn at home, the Gators have to play LSU, UK and UGA on the road. Tough part of the schedule.
And congrats to your Sooners, they rolled again last week. The Gators had a decent game but got beat deep twice in the second half. We couldnt put them away.
Do your Sooners have a tough game this week before the Texas showdown????? Go Sooners!! You shouldnt have too tough of a time with Texas. They almost lost to Central Florida.
If we beat LSU, they will make them drop out of the top 5. And I will be rooting hard for Oregon or Cal again this year to kill the Trojans. It doesnt look like Notre Dame will give them a game this year.
I hate to say this, but I have a feeling will have trouble giving Navy and Duke a good game this year.
Chuckerd, at least you got 2 offensive touchdowns. It is a start. Previously, I didnt know what ND could do offensively.
A friend, who is a ND fan, says that it is your strength and conditioning coach that needs replaced. ND did fade in the fourth quarter vs MSU.
My friend has tickets to the ND-Puke game. She feels fatalistic now that Puke has won one game.
For anyone who cares, Somerset up 7-4, bottom of 7th..
Boy, does New Orleans suck tonight on MNF
Somerset Newark tied 7-7 bottom 8.
Wheels falling off the Somerset hot wheels…Still bottom of 8.
Newark up 10-7 over Somerset.
Somerset’s hired gun Mikkelsen couldnt pitch the whole 9 innings. AH, too bad.
Thanks to Mike Ashmore…..
Newark up 13-7 over Somerset. It DOES look over for the Patriots winning every odd year.
Top 9
saints up 14-10.
sounds like a good game in newark.
pack, the sooners are at colorado (2-2) before texas. it will come down to october 6. right now it seems ou has the edge but the red river shootout is never a given. i am hoping this is ou’s year.
the cowboys got by texas tech. i would have never guessed that.
Congrats to the Newark Bears.
Let’s see: Wayne Krenchicki took over the Bears, who were 41-85 last season. He led them to a first-half title over powerful Long Island and then-powerful Bridgeport. He won the championship. And he’s not manager of the year?
Oh well. Another season in the books. We’ll fire up the hot stove in about five months.
We have to wait that long?
I agree with Dave…..the Barnstormers will have much to discuss way before five months from now!!!
Congratulations to Newark.
dad
Newark’s title caps an amazing turnaround. That franchise was in shambles at this time last year. The Bears hired the right manager, changed their baseball operations and became the champs.
Krenchicki’s success shows that an experienced manager can make a huge difference. That’s why the Barnstormers shouldn’t — and likely won’t — hire a first-year guy.
Also, it was interesting that Sparky Lyle went with three starters on short rest in this series considering Somerset’s pitching depth. Adams and Knight were successful. Mikkelsen was not.
chuckerd58 …..
As a Temple alumni I can finally say our football team is as good as ND!
I was reminding a friend who is diehard ND fan that when people ask him what do Temple football and ND football have in common he should know the answer ……
Neither has won a game this year!
Sooooo ummmmm, how bout that crazy Bosco!
Hey Barney, Boy the mighty have fallen.I feel your pain about Temple,my friend at work has a daughter who graduated from Temple, He would drive down for football games on the weekend with the hope of a victory, but come to work on monday resigned to hopelessness of the football team.
Bosco,George Costanza’s ATM code. Also,Mr Peterman’s mother’s lover’s name.
The Barnstormers flag football team kicked ass tonight they beat York 42-7…….
