There are six weeks left until the start of spring training and we still haven’t learned a lot about this season’s Barnstormers. The team has yet to sign a starting position player who wasn’t part of last year’s team.
Is this cause for concern? Not at all. Actually, it’s a sign that Keith Lupton and Von [...]

Bringing them back

The Barnstormers plan to bring back seven or eight members of last season’s roster. Three of them were named today. They are C Lance Burkhart, OF Dominick Ambrosini and P Ross Peeples.
None of these names comes as a surprise.
Burkhart has been a staple as the team’s catcher since its inception in 2005 and he’s coming [...]

If you haven’t seen it, this commercial is making the rounds on local TV. You can see the team is highlighting the new skipper, which is a smart move. Hopefully, the Gochnauer curse doesn’t apply here.

Predicting how players will fare in the Atlantic League is tricky business. By the time they filter down to this level, they could be facing a number of unseen obstacles. They could be recovering from injury, could be past their prime or simply not motivated any longer.
In some ways, that’s the appeal of independent ball. [...]

Manager Von Hayes has used some of his old connections to bring an infusion of new players to the Barnstormers. The team announced it has signed RHP Mike Nannini, RHP Tim McClaskey and OF/INF Lloyd Turner.
Nannini, 27, was a first-round draft pick by the Astros in 1998 and played for Hayes as part of the [...]

It appears the Barnstormers are ready to close the book on Josh Stevens’ time in Lancaster. The pitcher could be reunited with Butch Hobson, his old manager, with the expansion Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
Is this a smart move for the Barnstormers?
Stevens’ first full season here could be clearly broken into two parts. There was the [...]

As you can tell from the dearth of updates, news has been scarce lately. Still only two players officially under contract, although several members of last year’s team are expected to eventually re-sign. The contracts are in the mail, so to speak.
Here’s some minor news, some of which was brought up in the comments section [...]

The Barnstormers have brought back second baseman Mike Woods. He became the first position player to officially sign with the team today.
Woods, a former first-round draft pick by the Tigers in 2001, batted .294 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs in 100 games last season. He also stole 13 bases.
“Michael is one of the fastest [...]
Home team improvements

The Barnstormers’ offense needs to be improved. It needs a higher batting average, fewer strikeouts, better output with men on base and more speed and versatility.
How does the team accomplish those goals?
If you go position by position, Lancaster received solid-to-excellent production at most spots: Catcher, first base, second base, shortstop, left field and center field. [...]
