Woods re-signs
February 5, 2008 by Jason Guarente

The Barnstormers have brought back second baseman Mike Woods. He became the first position player to officially sign with the team today.
Woods, a former first-round draft pick by the Tigers in 2001, batted .294 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs in 100 games last season. He also stole 13 bases.
“Michael is one of the fastest players in the Atlantic League,” head of baseball operations Keith Lupton said in a team statement. “This year we’re going to give him more of an opportunity to use that speed.”
Woods came to the Barnstormers as a utility player at the start of last season. He took over the second base job when Bo Hart was picked up by the Cubs in June.
After not playing in 2006, Woods showed continued improvement as last season evolved. The Louisiana native batted .350 with eight homers in his final 42 games.
Of all the players the Barnstormers could bring back from last season, Woods was at the top of the list. His age, 27, and status as a high draft pick could help him eventually earn another shot in affiliated ball. If not, Lancaster has an Atlantic League player who appears to be on the rise.
Woods is the second player signed by the team. The Barnstormers agreed to terms with P Derek Forbes last week.
The Meet the 2008 team has been updated.

This post must be your round about way of saying sorry for being so insensitive about the Pats loss.
I except your apology.
GO WOODS!
He should be good and healed up now, so hopefully we can see him fly around the bases this year at 100%.
Mike Woods… Good player with a positive outlook. I am happy to see him on the 2008 roster. He definitely has speed on the bases.
I was able to speak with Mike several times last year and I know he enjoys being here in Lancaster.
A very positive start.

Excellent! When Woods was up and running, no one could catch him. Hopefully injuries don’t resurface and he cleans up this year. Now if they can get Burkhart and Hileman back, I’ll be happy. I’d much rather see new faces and talent filling the rest of the roster this year.
Marks Back!
Looking at the “meet the team” page, the colors look orange on the poster and Vons hat. Is that the case?
I am pumped about this signing for sure. Mike has a chance to be a very dynamic hitter at the top of the order…Now we just need to sign guys who can drive him in and not strike out 90 percent of the time with RISP.
I think the lighting makes the cap look orange. The reproduction value of those photos when you put them on this blog isn’t the greatest, unfortunately.
Welcome back Michael
That’s a shame. I kind of liked the Orange. Besides the Ducks, every team seams to be a mix of Red, white and a shade of blue. The Crabs, Barnstormers and Revolutions are all pretty much the share the same design concept. They could of got real creative with the Crab colors and logo.
For the life of me,I don’t understand why no team has Black as their main color. Although Long Island has a black 3rd jersey, which looks awful. Everyone knows Black makes you look thinner.
I agree Shrute! Europeans have had it right for years. The struggle dealing with lint on black clothing, far out weighs the nice slim fit black can produce.
I consider myself an expert in the laundry room so my educated guess is… it’s chemical problem.
The Clubies have to use very strong, harsh chemicals to get the ground in dirt out. The black dye would fade real fast and look like crap.
I wonder if the clubs use fabric softeners?
GO STORMERS!
I prefer Downy Mountain Spring but maybe the team uses Downy Clean Breeze.
I look forward to seeing Woods run the bases. I would assume that he is a good candidate for the lead off spot.
Thats funny, I totally pegged Stormin as a Downy Mountain Spring guy last year during a conversation I was having with Jason. He thought you were more of a Tide guy. I want my $10!!
Do they also use Colored Bleach?
So on the Lancaster Barnstormers webpage you might of scene the article for host families needed. In the caption it reads …”The Host Family program helps us compete against our league rivals for top-notch talent.”
You have to love the manipulation tactic on their part to save a buck. At least, thats what I assume they are trying to do.
Man, if we don’t house their employees, our team might loose! I think Water Street rescue mission has beds.
OK, that was insensitive towards the players… kind of. They do choose this lifestyle. But seriously, how do they figure it will get us top notch talent? There must be a reason if they say it on sites main page. Anyone have an explanation??
In my college days, I believe my English lit professor called it hyperbole. Todat it’s just “hype.”
Yeah, I guess it’s just hype w/ no real laudable pursuit on their end. Still my response would be “Pay for good players, or attendance will drop”.
Sorry, it’s just Maryland and York really have me nervous that we are getting third pick. It irks me then that they ask us to buy tix and then also to feed their children. Or maybe I’m wrong? Maybe it’s the only way.
Another note: How crazy is it that Clemens wife is being accused of taking roids now! I remember that issue of Sports Illustrated. She was ripped! I bet they used to beat the crap out of each other in the bedroom.
On the subject of the players using Host families. Some of these players have very expensive computer equipment, game systems and cars that they do not want sitting around an apartment complex. They are out of town 50 percent of the time. The host families keep their personal things safe while they are on the road.
And on the Clemens thing.. What about HIPAA laws? Doesn’t the trainer fall under the provider of medical care? and how about the possession of Biohazard waste material. If I as a nurse did such a thing as holding on to use needles.. you better believe I would be find … thousands of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Talk about kissing and telling.. even if he did inject, his lips should, by law be sealed !!!!!
So, free season tickets for Host Families, and everyone wins
Host families only get free tickets … if the player puts them on the list each game day.
I think it should be automatic but no such luck.
Host families aren’t unique to the Barnstormers. Minor league teams, including affiliated teams, have used host families to help ease the players transition for several years. My father lives next door to a host family for the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Detroit Tigers Class A team. However the player is required to pay $125/mo for room and board, plus the host family get tickets to all the home games.
It does make sense, if you trying to get “top notch” talent. Those players aren’t planning to be here all season. They’re hoping to be in and out of here in 8 to 10 weeks or less. They don’t want the hassle of finding short term leases, utility hook ups, and all the other crap that comes with looking for housing.
I just hope management is sincere in looking for top notch talent. Because it appears they can put just about anything on the field and “we will come.” Remember 20.000 fans, including myself three times, watched the last place Barnstormers finish the season against the Road Warriors in a 3 game series..
I guess it slipped my mind about the fact that the players are not here for long therefore wouldn’t to deal with apartments.
Do they pay rent like the Whitecaps? If not, I’ll go a step further and say that they should at least have a suite designated for Host families. Taking care of grown adults is a huge commitment! My wife reminds me of that everyday.
I am a host family and I don’t know of any of the host families who accept money from the players for rent, food, utilites, or anything for that matter. We are doing it to extend that famous Lancaster County hospitality and for the experience.
As for the tickets, if you get there very late there is no guarentee for tickets for host families. Sometimes there are away teams who have lots of guests on their list too. Host families have been known to get to the box office and there are no tickets left to give out in the player’s section. In that case they get lawn seat tickets. Usually, there are better seats that are empty and you can just move. Also, if the player’s list is not up to the box office, host families usually have to just stand there and wait for it. This is especially a problem on Sunday day games even when there is a special promotion like autograph day! Not right in my book, but that is how it works.
I like the idea of a skybox for the host families! Heck VIP parking would be cool too. While we’re at it, how about a discount at the concession stand! But for now we get the perk of being put on a players list and the expeience alone and that is more than enough for me. those seats are great. We’ve had the privilge of hosting several wonderful players in our home. Not one bad experience for us.
Nicely said PTBNL. I never would accept money from a player, it’s just not the Lancaster County way. I like the skybox idea, They do that in Trenton for families of players.. host or birth (if a box is available) Last opening night it was in the 30’s but we were all nice and warm and the bartender kept us well supplied

As for the VIP parking… where do all the HR and foul balls hit… cars in VIP, no thanks.
On a warmer note… Pitchers and Catcher report to spring training this week
Jason - Have you heard anything on Charlie Weatherby’s status? I haven’t been able to find anything searching the various Phiilies sites. I believe he was released at the end of the season. Didn’t know if he was invited to Spring Training with them or not.
Charlie had shoulder surgery at the end of the season… lets hope his rehab was fast and he is back with Reading soon !!!
Jason probably knows more, but i heard Weatherby didn’t have any luck after his surgery and could be headed back to Lancaster. I also heard through the grapevine that Stevens wants to be traded to Maryland.
Most of the pitchers like Hobson so who can blame them
Didn’t Steven’s play for Hobson when he was in Nashua? That would make since then.
Yep… DePriest too.
And lets not forget, it was Butch Hobson’s love for his players that led him to “give-up” his two best pitchers (Stevens and Depriest) from his 2006 Nashua team to Lancaster, for NOTHING in return (and he STILL went on to win the 2007 Can-Am League championship)….so one could see why they would want to play for him again.
Who would people consider the best manager they have ever seen in the Atlantic League? Hobson,Lyle,Herr,Krenchicki,or anyone else? I personally favor Krenchicki. Camden was alway’s good, and he won the last championship in Newark.
Wow, Hi Dr. House… welcome (back?) to the blog.
The pitchers have such a great respect for him, I’m sure Butch will take the Crabs to the AL championship within two seasons.
Thanks Sydney…I’m actually new to this blog…a certain patient with the initials K.S. came in to see me a few months back…after an exhausting diagnosis, I realized he had “over-exposure” syndrome…he said it was from this blog…I told him he could never blog again, and promised I would check in on the blog from time to time for him!..lol …btw, he mentioned you make the best meatballs and whole wheat pasta that side of the mason-dixon line! He also mentioned Stormin’s pecan pie!
LOL Yes.. I take good care of my house guests. Think I need to work on a bigger variety of nutritious food for any future guests.
K.S. is in very good hands. I love your show, you are an amazing DR. I told my son I want him to be just like you when he grows up and finishes college, medical school and a four year residency in internal medicine !
Ablo Espanyol?
Que tal Dr. House, do you prefer a scalpel or shovel to perform your surgery? I usually end up with a shovel if you know what I mean. To be honest, I don’t watch your show. I actually watched it once and it left me feeling blue.
We can deliver Pecan Pies to anywhere.
You don’t watch House? Then a shovel it IS !!!! Shame on you Stormin, how are ya by the way??? Ya know, I’m going to Tampa soon
Can’t WAIT !!!
Someone has to pay the bills. My wife and I will continue to go to away games up here. Enjoy the sun.
