Cabrera added to pen
March 27, 2008 by Jason Guarente
Two days after naming their closer, the Barnstormers identified their set-up man. It’s Jose Cabrera, who played in the major leagues with the Astros, Braves and Brewers.
Cabrera, 36, hasn’t pitched professionally in the United States since 2003, when he was in Triple-A with the Phillies. His last appearance in the big leagues came with the Brewers in 2002. According to the Howe database, he also pitched in Mexico in 2006.
The Barnstormers became interested in Cabrera when they saw him at a Phillies tryout camp in Clearwater over the winter.
“We felt he was the best pitcher in the camp that day,” said Keith Lupton, the team’s head of baseball operations.
One of the Barnstormers’ priorities was adding some depth to a bullpen that has some uncertainty. The team is counting on newcomers Franklin Mendible, Ricardo Gomez and Derek Forbes. Mendible and Forbes didn’t play professionally last season. Gomez was in the South Coast League, which is a lower level of competition.
Cabrera brings strong credentials. He’s 46-39 with a 3.21 ERA in 10 minor-league seasons. He has appeared in 198 big-league games, posting a 4.95 ERA.
All of those stats were compiled years ago, however, so it’s difficult to project how he’ll fare in the Atlantic League at this stage of his career. The Barnstormers hope he’s the eighth-inning pitcher they were lacking last season, and – if Sendy Rleal gets scooped up by an affiliated club – the closer in waiting.
Clearly, the Barnstormers are taking some risks with their relief corps. But if you’re going to take chances, that’s a good place to do it. Relievers are the hardest players to predict. If the gambles pay off, this could be an excellent pen. If not, well, you saw last season what a shaky bullpen can do to a ballclub.
*Former Somerset star Jeff Nettles was released by the Royals. Patriots beat writer Ryan Dunleavy has the scoop here.

I hope this guy doesn’t show up 100lbs overweight sporting mustard stains and eating cheese curls.
PS. Where the hell is “Play To Win”? We could use his scouting incite in times like these. I hope Autograph Amy didn’t corner him in some dark ally.
The Barnstormers have 10 pitchers under contract. They’ll carry 12 at the most. So the staff is mostly set. They’re still going to add another starter and a left-handed reliever.
Roster and bios at the Meet the Team page.
ALB.com has some info about Jeff Nettles. Could he be returning to the Atlantic League to torment the Barnstormers?
I am excited. Less than a month. I am still looking for that 1B and 3B Big Stick we need to replace Todd and Ortiz.
Wes Helms is still available!!!
Although the announcements haven’t been made, the Barnstormers are set at 1B — assuming the contracts go through. The holes left to fill are 3B and RF.
Patterson pitched another inning (actually 1.1) for the Yanks and he is still holding a 0.00
Jason, any idea’s on who might be in the 3B position?
Why don’t we bring Russ back.. he can fill any hole we have
Jason …… You mean we got Barry Bonds to play 1B???????
Third base is the one spot that really isn’t filled. They have a good idea of who the 1B, DH and RF are going to be, assuming nothing falls through. No Russ Cleveland. They’re trying to upgrade offensively with Mejia at C.
Another 1 1/3 perfect innings for Patterson. If he gets sent down, well, there’s nothing else he could have done. Peter Abraham at LoHud seems to think the last spot is going to Bruney, the guy with the big-league contract.
Sendy Rleal could be the real deal. Unfortunately, my team rushed him to the majors a few years ago, he didn’t do THAT bad considering his age, & then he was injured all of last year. Another possible disaoppointment for me & my team. Go Sendy & Go O’s.
Abraham talks about Patterson’s chances at his blog. The fans also offer some opinions, which is always interesting.
Here’s the link. (Scroll up for Abraham’s take).
The Royals released Nettles after a great spring training. Hitting .375 and 5 HR… what, are they stupid???
Looks like some Stormer fans have been on the blog Jason linked to in #11, so I added my thoughts too.
Can’t wait for the season to start ….
Go ‘Stormers and Go Phightin Phils!!!!
(comment #13) We’re all becoming Jasons Soldiers. He puts up links with a purpose in mind. A purpose he has yet to reveal for his master plan. Most people don’t even realize they are working for him. Last night for some reason I told his bosses that he needed a new chair at the ballpark with his name on it. Not until afterward did I realize that he told me to do this in a secret message he wrote to me in one of his comments.

An article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette regarding Scott Patterson for those who are interested.
I know that the Yankees have three spots open for eight spots on their roster. But how can they not give one to Scott who hasnt given up a run yet this year?
Jose Cabrera has played in Korea from 2004-2007. He played with the SK Wyverns and Lotte Giants. During his KBO career he went 8-11 with 53 saves and an ERA of 3.82 and a K/9 average of 8.1.
Thanks for the info, Dan. Those numbers are encouraging, particularly the K rate.
