Game 11: Stormers 9-7

Tim McClaskey 1-0, 6.17 ERA |
| Vince Perkins 0-0, 1.93 ERA |

On his way back to the clubhouse after the seven-game losing streak was officially history, Rick Wise fired off one of his favorite baseball lines: “It’s easy to win when the other team doesn’t score.”
The Barnstormers hope Zack Parker’s two-hit gem is the spark that gets them out of their early-season funk. While Monday’s performance doesn’t cure all of the team’s ills, including a thin rotation and a shorthanded bullpen, it reminded you of the premium talent here. Parker is at the top of the list. He has allowed 11 hits in 21 innings. In his 13 Atlantic League appearances, he’s 7-1 with a 2.01 ERA. That’s a half-season worth of starts that would make Denny Harriger envious.
Tim McClaskey looks to keep the positive mojo going. The righthander is the only other Barnstormers starter with a win to this point and his ERA is a little misleading because two runners scored after he left the game in his previous outing. Vince Perkins makes his first start after two relief apperances for Camden. He spent last season in High-A and Double-A with the Brewers.
LeCroy out: Lost in the enjoyment of Parker’s performance was the fact that DH Matt LeCroy was placed on the DL because of a sore left shoulder. The injury affects his lead arm on his swing and is the reason he wasn’t able to produce through the first eight games. This is no minor loss for the Barnstormers. LeCroy’s addition was one of the factors that had everyone buzzing about this team’s offensive potential.
Manager Von Hayes said he will not make a corresponding roster move for now. He wants to wait and see the severity of the injury.
“We’ll probably try to grind it out and go with two extra guys until he gets healthy,” Hayes said. “We’ll re-evaluate in about two or three days to see how his progress is going and make a decision from there. If if looks like he’s making great progress, we’ll just grind it out.”
The Barnstormers have gradually transformed themselves since the start of spring training. They’re no longer a plodding, slugging team. By adding SS Danny Gonzalez and OF Jarred Ball and giving 2B Lloyd Turner a lot of playing time, they’ve become more athletic and versatile. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the lineup the Barnstormers had in 2005 — when Quincy Foster and Travis Hake were at the top of the batting order.
Starter search:
The Barnstormers need to find a starting pitcher prior to Thursday’s game at Newark. They plan to audition two guys today and could sign one — or both — depending on their performance. If the Barnstormers don’t add a pitcher by Thursday, they’ll have to endure another bullpen game.
“We’re going to try to avoid that,” Hayes said.

Lancaster leads 9-7.
RECORD: 4-7
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Woods (2-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and the go-ahead grand slam in eighth inning)
Easy POG choice. Woods extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the first inning. He turned a good night into a great one when he lined a grand slam over the right-center wall in the eighth. His on-base is now .489. He’s 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts. How is that for a lead-off hitter?
The grand slam was the big moment …
“Mike is comfortable,” manager Von Hayes said. “He’s putting together some great at-bats. He did what he’s supposed to do in that situation. I don’t think he tried to hit a home run. He was trying to hit a fly ball to center field. He got a pitch he could handle over the plate and smoked it.”
The pitchers:
*Tim McClaskey took the baton from Zack Parker and kept the shutout streak going until the sixth inning. His line …
| 5.1 IP | 6 H | 2 R | 2 ER | 1 BB | 0 K |
*McClaskey was again victimized by having two inherited runners score, which took some of the luster off an otherwise excellent outing. The righthander was handed an early 4-0 advantage and did his job. He threw strikes and kept his team in front.
*Pat Cassa didn’t fare as well. The lefty surrendered hits to three of the four batters he faced. He allowed Ron Davenport’s two-out, two-run triple that tied the game at 4 in the sixth inning. The ball was nearly caught by RF Jarred Ball, but hit off the wall. It’s an out most places. Not at the Clip.
*Rob Averette stranded the go-ahead run at third base in the sixth inning and fired one scoreless frame.
*Ryan Cullen pitched two innings and surrendered three unearned runs in the ninth. He still earned his second win, which leads the team, and was probably left out there too long in a non-save situation.
*Ricardo Gomez got the final out for his first save.
*The Barnstormers acquired P Jeff Muessig from the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League for future considerations. That’s Wally Backman’s team. Lancaster also worked out P Yamel Guevara, a Cuban defector, prior to Tuesday night’s game and is expected to work out another pitcher Wednesday.
The hitters:
*Woods is emerging into a star. As Dawes pointed out, the OF showed all facets of his game, his power, his speed, his ability to get on base. Stolen bases are a big part of the Barnstormers’ offense for the first time since 2006.
“Von and Boots have us running,” Woods said. “Last year I really didn’t have the green light per se. I was limited in what I could really do. This year they give us the steal and I’m gone.”
Remember when Bo Hart started at 2B and Woods was a utility guy? Hard to believe in retrospect.
*Brian Stavisky launched homer No. 3. Hayes said Stavisky is the kind of a hitter who will produce even when he’s not totally locked in at the plate. We saw that tonight. He had three rough at-bats before hitting his solo homer. He’s always a threat.
*Ian Bladergroen belted a two-run double in the first inning as he continued his RBI surge. He leads the team with 11.
*Jutt Hileman made a diving catch in the second inning, robbing L.J. Biernbaum of at least a double. It was probably the best defensive play at home this season.
*Juan Francia made his debut as a pinch runner and scored in the eighth.
*This one wasn’t a masterpiece. Two errors. 13 hits allowed. But it was a win. Hayes wasn’t exactly thrilled with how his team earned it.
“We won a game and I almost feel like we lost,” Hayes said. “I won’t say I’d rather take a loss, but it’s a much better feeling when you play a solid, good game and maybe lose 2-1 rather than play a game like that. That’s unacceptable.”
*The Barnstomers are 4-1 at home and 0-6 on the road.

Sure wish Travis was still on the team. It doesn’t seem quite the same without him.
I think the Barnstormer Community (ODP) should make a permanent plaque for Denny Harriger at the Clip. Even if it was just for his 9 inning gem he pitched for the Barnstormers 1st championship. It would give the stadium some character too and forever cement him in Barnstormer lore. He could be the first of many bronze plaques out in Left field.
A Harriger plaque would be totally cool.
100%…The Team needs to retire his Jersey. Come on Booster Club, here’s your chance to push for something.
We need a Denny Harriger Nite!!!!!!
Interesting thought.. I’ll speak to the president right away.. tonight!!!
Looks like Dennys destiny is in the palm of your hands! Will he live forever???
Retiring a players number is not a booster club issue. That is a TEAM/ownership issue. The booster club would and should have nothing to do with that . IN MY OPINION its not their call.
The sentiment is nice on this sort of thing…a plaque would be cool but a jersey retirement? Not sure its appropriate.
No offense to Denny and what he did in 2006 but…..
Actually it’s probably in Kevin Cummings or the other higherups at the Clipp.. If Patty makes it to Yankeeeeee stadium I will retire his jersey myself!!!
Cool Amish quilt avatar’s!
Where can I buy one?
Oh, nevermind, it seems that I’ve already got one.
Yeah thats what I am saying syd. No offense to the booster club..its just not their business…thats all I am saying.
and what’s up with the quilts?
Now if Scott makes it to the major leagues…then thats a different story!Personally I think the Brooks Robinson tribute at York is cool. Those little bronze baseballs in the sidewalk are a great touch! Thats the kind of thing we need here.
I like my aviator the best!!! Marty Rules !!!!!
Why is mine purple? No fair, Booby has green. I wanted green! Is black still available?
Wait… these aviators are trying to tell us something? Something strange is going on.
I hope I don’t have to trade mine for a quilt.
Yes! I don’t have a quilt.
It really is the mark of the beast!! Looks like Stormin’s safe! (go figure).
Are you ready for this, hey, are you ready for this!
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Another one one bites the dust, Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust, eh
Go Stormers!
Now that Mr Wizard has turned me into a green quilt, I will play the song backwards.
Jason, you’ve been doing a lot of cyber-stiching lately.
To make all of these li’l quilts for us…how very PA Dutch of you!
Mr bs….don’t complain about your purple quilt. Mine’s pink.
Maybe wordpress is trying to tell me something.
My eyeball avatar isn’t even working anymore!
Noooooo!!!
I can’t see! I can’t see!
I went away for awhile, but I’ve been well behaved. I WANT Desmond BACK!
I’d like to state for the record: I had NOTHING to do with the quilts.
Ok, I’m ready for my quilt……
The mad quilter has even affevted old posts!
Now for baseball, is this the same lineup 2 games in a row?
Anybody close to a Bingo yet??
Outta hear ….
Can’t wait to see what color quilt I get! Maroon and Gray please!
Darn! Green - No! Looks like a bug got squashed and splattered. I want Maroon and Gray!
Nice job Cullen. Ultimate, that does look like something I’ve had to scrape off the windshield. Wish I’d gone to the Stormers game tonite, rather than watch Lebron and the Celtics. I’ve seen better HS games.
If there is any player in this Club History that deserves to have his # retired it’s Harriger. How long do we have to wait?? 5 years?? 10Years before we think about it?
Didn’t mean to insinuate that it’s the Booster Clubs decision. Heck, I realize the “Powers that be” are the ones that will decide it…But….the Booster Club could certainly pursue it.
FYI…..The shoulder isn’t any better.
Grand Salami!!
Way to go Woody!!
Way to freakin’ go Woods!
Way to freakin’ go Stavisky!
I have waiting for a great inning. The 4 spot will do nicely. Now the bullpen has to hold them to three runs. Can they do it?????
WooHoo! Stavisky!
IMO, McClaskey did a pretty good job tonight. He made me a bit nervous a couple times but not too bad.
Booby - Maybe you could send a request to the Booster Club to put it on the agenda for the next membership meeting and you could present the idea. I’m assuming you are a member
If not, it’s time to join.
Whew…time to breathe again. Another win!
Only gave up three runs in the ninth inning??? When are the powers that be going to address the obvious bullpen problem???
Yeah, that was kind of unfortunate. If they hadn’t scored in the 8th, the game would have been lost. Fortunately, a couple big hits picked up the slack. Cullen wasn’t bad but I’m not close to sold on Gomez.
Packmule, the “powers that be” as far as the bullpen goes would be the Dominican courts. The closer and setup-man will have their visa hearing this Friday. Hopefully they’ll be here soon after that.
Ok.. I give up, what is with the Amish take over of he Aviators??? I still have my Marty and Stormin has his cool Stormer/Revs hybris.
Sydney, how did you do that anyway? Where do you set that stuff up?
Jutt’s diving catch was pretty sweet, too. Almost got lost in the Woods shuffle.
What a game.
I still have my avatar. Nana Nana Boo Boo. I saw Jason in the press box with Dawes. I was wondering why he was saying “over under pull & thru”. Now I know.
It really was a great game. And my wife won the Lucky Seven game but not the $25,000. Oh well, I guess I have to work.
Tomorrow we go for the _ _ _ _ _!
Roster move: Barnstormers acquired P Jeff Muessig from the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League for future considerations. Muessig’s stats are here.
Interesting. Another bullpen candidate, rather than a starter?
Hmm…no Muessig cards on eBay. My kids will be heart broken.
Oh my…now I have my eye and no pink quilt.
That’s cool, I guess.
Muessig will start on Thursday and then head to the bullpen.
Hello, I am a newbie here. Great game tonight. Is Francia one of the guys with visa problems?? He can run, I hope he can catch and bat!!!
Way to go Woods!! Let’s home Thursday night goes well.
UBF…no..not a Booster Club Member. Just one of those stupid Sports junkies
dj.. you’ll have to get private aviator lessons from Stormin, he taught me well… I can do anything now
Did anyone keep track of the broken bat count? Holy cow.. pieces were flyin everywhere the whole game.
Kelley and I will be STANDNG in the pen tonight since we are great HR Karma when we’re not on our butts !!!!!
I hope Jeff did not shake Lance’s hand before leaving Joliet. I don’t think we need “intentional walk” lessons.
Lance Odem is STiLL in baseball?.. not pitching , I hope !!!
Cassa is the one that should go next after last night and the debacle at Long Island where he walked in 2 runs.
Thanks for the detailed recap. i appreciate it that since I couldnt attend last night.
Pack - still in the same section? I’ll stop by and say hello tonight if you will be there.
Hi Barney,
My seats are actually in section 9. Row L. End of row nearest section 10. But I will have to say, “Hi” another time. I am still in Gainesville, Florida visiting my daughter. I took a week off to attend her graduation and spend some time with her.
The weather is a gorgeous 85-88 here. Humidity is low. The relaxing is easy.
I wont be able to attend until next Wednesday. Good hearing from you. But I will definitely be looking for you at the Clip. Enjoy the games for me. It looks like the Barnstormers are on a good roll now.
Barney, I was thinking of you the other day. TV was showing clips of the top 100 comedy movies and Fast Times was about number 4. They showed the clip with Spicoli says, “Mr. Hand, if you are here and I am here, isnt it our time.” Mr. Hand had just accused Jeff of wasting his time by ordering pizza in his class.
By the way, Animal House was “the number one funniest movie.”
Maureen,
The 2008 statistics are copyrighted (and supplied) for the Barnstormers. They say they are located on the Fish Pier in Boston. That would be the same pier where you directed me to the “No Name Restaurant.” Small world.
That restaurant was really good. Thanks again for that heads up.
Out to the Kanapha Gardens with the wife and kid. Talk to you folks later. Have a great Barnstormer day.
PS..we are going to go to a minor league game on Thursday. Daytona Beach Thunderbirds. It is a minor league Arena Football League game. I didnt even know they had a minor league. It should be interesting.
B - Why don’t you get a job Pack?
P - What for?
B - You need money for your Florida vacation don’t you?
P - All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.
Enjoy Florida and we will see you when you get back!
If Pack is in Florida, that means there’s open seats in Sec. 9
Go for it Scottie. I actually have seats in section 6 tonight. I can scout out the area if you need me to!
The ballhawks and I won’t be at many early season games. Little League is in full swing right now.
But thanks, Barney, for offering to be my partner in crime!
Darn, I missed the return of Maize & Blue and his nice rendition of “Bites The Dust” (one of the greatest base riffs ever).
PS. Don’t play it backward Maize. You’ll want to smoke herb if you do.
Jason - Do you think we will see the same lineup 3 games in a row?
Possibly.
There are only two players on the bench: Francia and Mejia, so there aren’t many options at this point. I think they like the order from the last two nights and they’re winning. So I don’t see any reason to mess with it.
Wow looking at the stats, Woods is really tearing it up. He leads the league in stolen bases and OBP. Plus 4th in hitting.
LETS GO WOODS!!
Zack Parker starts this year have brought back memories of Denny Harriger. I made an effort to make it to the ballpark when Denny pitched — even when I had other plans. I will likely do the same for Zack this year. Just fun to watch a pitcher work the plate like that.
A plaque remembering the gem Denny Harriger pitched to wrap up the 2006 championship would be a nice first item to a wall in the stadium commemorating special moments in Barnstormers history, IMHO.
I was a little worried last night when Spanos dove for the ball and was down for a while because of our short bench.
But the trooper that he is, got up, shook it off, threw a couple of balls and said ‘Play Ball’. Definatly an Iron Man in my book. The guy likes to get dirty. Why else would he carry his own personal gallon water jug and drink only from it.
That would be an interesting question to ask him Jason, why the personal supply.
Be carefull Jason. It’s probably filled with Ouzo! That stuff is nasty but what would I know …..
It’s all Greek to me!
Just to educate the masses ……
Ouzo - The classic Greek drink Ouzo is made from a precise combination of pressed grapes and herbs and berries including aniseed, licorice, mint, wintergreen, fennel and hazelnut. Ouzo it is not produced in any other part of the world except Greece. It is a 100% Greek product and Greece’s National drink. Ranging in alcohol precentages between: 40% to 48%! If you are not familiar with the taste, the easiest way to describe it would be that close to Black Licorice.
And the wife says I never learn antything on the internet.
Thanks Mr. Stormer!
Dang it, now I’m back to the pink quilts. What’s up w/ that?
Woods is awesome. He was an excellent choice to bring back.
Way to go Stormers!!! Two in a row way to go.
Jason if I remember correctly all except last year we had better records on the road. Last year donent count because of the BS from the BASA last year.
Last season …
Home: 34-38
Road: 23-31
Incidentally, last night was the 200th win in team history (not counting playoffs).
Hope they make it 201 tonight !!!
Ouzo - available at any PLCB store, I’m sure.
or maybe Bob could tell us where to find it.
you know, to cope with those long losing streaks.
#63
Before last night that kid had given up 2 hits in 4 innings of work without allowing a run. I spoke with a friend who was actually at the Long Island game and said it was not very ideal conditions for a pitcher. I know it might be time to take the training wheels off but remember he is 22. A bit young for this league sure, but if Ball catches the ball (sorry) or its a routine fly ball anywhere else, hie ERA is still 0.
Is he over matched in the Atlantic League… maybe so, but his numbers are clearly not the worst on the staff…
Tough game tonight, another blunder by the pen… however the offense seems to be picking it up. I’m not sure if its the friendly home confines or they are heating up, but pray for the latter. In the end though I still believe this team will be more than fine, its early still and I trust that Hayes will do the necessary adjustments.
