Game 17: Stormers 4-1

When the Riversharks rolled into town last week, minus half their starting lineup because of injuries and departures, we talked about how quickly fortunes can change in the Atlantic League. The Barnstormers have also made that discovery. They’re only 16 games into the season and they’re without their ace, their cleanup man and their top left-handed power hitter. Two were lost to affiliated ball. One to injury.
As hard as Von Hayes and Keith Lupton will work to upgrade the roster, some guys can’t be replaced. Zack Parker is one of them. Where are you going to find another lefthander capable of posting a 2.08 ERA in 14 starts in this league? He was a rarity for indy ball — a pitcher whose career arc seemed to be rising.
Today the Barnstormers are expected to learn more about the future of DH Matt LeCroy, who hasn’t played since May 3 because of a sore shoulder. If it’s determined that LeCroy needs a continued stay on the disabled list, the team is going to have to start looking for another hitter. Finding one projected to mash 20+ homers, as LeCroy and Jason Perry were, is extremely difficult.
This is the beginning of a pivotal stretch for the Barnstormers. They play the next 10 games against division rivals Somerset and York. If Lancaster doesn’t at least tread water, its first-half hopes will dim considerably. The Barnstormers will give the ball to Ricardo Gomez tonight. Gomez allowed one run in four innings in his first start against Newark Thursday.

Roster move: The Barnstormers have signed P Mark Alexander. The righthander is a 20th-round draft choice who spent four seasons in the Dodgers system. He split time between Double-A and Triple-A last season.

Game tied at 1.
Stormers 3rd: Spanos’ sacrifice fly scores Gonzalez. Bladergroen’s double scores Woods.
Lancaster leads 3-1.
Stormers 5th: Stavisky’s double scores Francia.
Lancaster leads 4-1.
RECORD: 6-11
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ian Bladergroen (2-for-3 with a double and a home run).
Bladergroen is definitely comfortable at the Clip. He’s 11-for-24 with three homers and 12 RBIs in seven home games. Even his outs at home seem to be hit hard. Something happens to Bladergroen when he hits the road. He’s 6-for-34 in 10 road games.
“I really enjoy hitting here,” the first baseman said. “I see the ball really well. You wouldn’t even know I played on the Road Warriors last year with the batting average I have on the road. It helps that I feel really comfortable here and am getting into a groove.”
The pitchers:
*Ricardo Gomez turned in another solid start …
| 5 IP | 3 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 1 BB | 5 K |
The Barnstormers may have found a long-term solution for their rotation in Gomez. The righthander has allowed two earned runs in nine innings in his two starts. His strikeouts are up and his control is better in this role rather than out of the bullpen.
“Ricardo is going to get better every time he goes out there,” manager Von Hayes said. “He’s got a better-than-average fastball and he has enough of an offspeed pitch to keep the hitters off-balance. He just has to really get confident with his fastball and throw it more. When he gets an idea how to do that, he’s going to be a darn good pitcher.”
*Yamel Guevara was effective in relief …
| 3 IP | 2 H | 0 R | 0 ER | 3 BB | 3 K |
The walks are a blemish, but understandable considering how long it has been since Guevara pitched regularly. The bottom line is Guevara has thrown 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen since joining the team and hasn’t allowed a run. That’s a nice change for the relief corps.
*Jeff Muessig worked a scoreless ninth for his first save.
*This was a night to feel better about the staff. It was the best the pitchers have looked in a non-Zack Parker outing this season.
“Now all of a sudden we’ve become a team that if we put some runs on the board we have a decent chance of holding on to them,” Hayes said.
*Nate Hoelscher and Rob Averette have been released.
*Sendy Rleal and Nick Renault arrived during the game and will be activated for Wednesday. Rleal will likely pitch Wednesday. Renault is tentatively scheduled to start Thursday.
The hitters:
*Mike Woods extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double in the third inning. He’s three short of the franchise record shared by Norm Hutchins and Jeremy Todd.
*Danny Gonzalez was dropped to ninth in the order. He went 1-for-2 with a run scored and sacrifice bunt.
*Jarred Ball returned after missing five games with a sore quad. He played CF in place of Jutt Hileman and went 0-for-3 with a walk.
*It really wasn’t a great night for the offense. It didn’t matter because the team pitched so well. The Barnstormers are 5-2 at the Clip and 1-9 on the road. This was a nice win because it moved Lancaster within 2½ games of Somerset. You don’t want to fall too far back, even though it’s early.

Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa are still out there! (only kidding)
And so they should be.
I wonder how many people are gonna have the nads to show up tonight with signs?
Jason–Since local news is slow, you should tell your local newspaper buddies (anyone but the ultra liberal and living in a fantasy world Gil Smart please) that division is happening within the Barnstormer communities. Photos of the signs will paint a perfect picture.
I have a good feeling about tonight. With our newest ace “Eric” starting, we are going to win.
The only sign you will see me with is “GO STORMERS”.
How much are the positive pills? Can they crush up easily if someone wanted to snort them?
Good for you Stormin…thats the only kind of sign I want to see! Whats done is done right?
I’ll miss tonights game since I will be down at the Phillies game. I sure hope that old guy on the cover of the Jethro Tull Album “Aqua Lung” is on Pattison Ave after the game selling soft pretzels!!
Mr. Stormer, I literally laughed out loud when I read #5!
They are free. If you crush and snort them then you are going to get one heck of a sugar rush.
good luck guys! i will be cheering extra loud and I have this feeling Eric will do great too!!! GO STORMERS!!!
I won’t be going tonight. If I go tomorrow, I might hit you up for a couple pills, Stormin’. Bring extras, please.
Pitching change: It’s Ricardo Gomez tonight and Ackerman Wednesday.
I still feel a win.
Best of luck to however pitches tonight. Go Stormers! Look for you Thursday DJ. Tonite it’s DEEEE—troit basketball, followed on Wednesday by the Pavel and Henrik show.
Flyers win at home tonite.
Sounds like a sports filled few days for you, m&b.
Thursday I’ll be wearing my red 2007 All-Star hat. There shouldn’t be too many of those around, eh?
Oh, and I’ll be the chaperone in the midst of a sea of rowdy, pre-pubescent 4th and 5th graders out on the lawn.
Look for the frustraded guy trying to escape. And from the sound of it, I’ll not be escaping to the main concourse…too many “hawkers” to contend with. *shudder*
djs …. wear your red socks. Although we didn’t actually meet the night that was something I remember when we realized we were sharing a bench in left field!
Enjoy the games this series. I will not be at any in person but will be there in spirit. Let’s get behind these guys and turn things around! Those of you doubters out there who think the 1st half is over, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? I don’t think so! Now who’s with me ………..
LET’S GO STORMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Red Socks it is.
Mrs. spleen hates those socks.
Another roster move. See above.
Let’s hope he doesn’t take that # 23 jersey
M&B We’ll see about those Flyers..
GO PENS!
30 minutes til blood on the ice!
OH SHUT UP !!!!!!!
Waiting for the Flyers aviator to upload here… and day now !!!
IAN YES, YES, YES !!!!!!!
Jared Ball made an error so he’ll be released and Ian hits homeruns so .. he’ll get signed up to affiliated.
we can’t win
Awww….. isn’t that pretty

Oh man.. Mike ’s gonna get signed too !!!
The Flyers have the kind of tuffness I like when you get to the conference playoffs. Plus tonite they will play with desperation, cause it’s improbable they will come back down three. Don’t believe they can win two on the road to win 4 straight.
Based on Alexanders stats he’s another bullpen guy. Can someone explain their pitching staff strategy?
Got me an avaitor
Damn, never rush the punchline.
Lindbergh?? Nice.. No pun intened right ????
Anybody got any LL scores?
HOLD EM STORMERS!!
OMG we Won ?????????
Way to play guys!
so were there any signs tonight?
Oh yeah…great game tonight!
Spanos…ya gotta luv how he plays!
I don’t know about signs but HE was there !!!!
anybody walkes out of the locker room with #23 will have to return to the locker room and change numbers… there will only every by one #23….
I told you I felt a win. Way to go team!
no signs…. but there is hope
you felt a win because we were at home
Two more transactions after the game. See the recap.
#32. I know Hempfield won 6-4. I don’t know the score of the second game. Great win tonight guys. Keep it going.
wow just proves nobody is safe…..
Jason- Any idea why Lance didn’t play? After the off day you would have thought he would be in there. I would have thought he would get the day off on Thursday, with the early game after a night game.
I believe Burkhart has a sore arm. He has been relegated to DH duties the past three games.
Von is not using the pitcher properly.. for goodness sakes stop this swinging door, It’s really making us crazy. For all the hoopla around the two new additions i sure hope they were worth the wait. Any one left in the pen that speaks english ?
I think Mejia and Gomez made a great combo…
Jason:
Is the Mark Alexander that the Barnstormers just signed the same Mark Alexander that recently signed with the Texas Rangers system and then released a few weeks later?
Hey, who won the Penguin-Flyer game earlier tonight????
Ultimate,
Yes, same guy.
Just got back from the Phillies game, a solid win for the Phightin’s! Great to see the Stormers won. Maybe I should stay away from the radio too! As for the Flyers what can I say? The better team is winning. In the words of Jerry Garcia, “What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been”. Almost 3 hrs to get to the game tonight with about 65,000 at the sports complex. As for the pretzel update 3 for $2 before the game and 5 for $2 after the game.
djs ….. yes I did by pretzels from “Aqua Lung”. Didn’t see any snot running from his nose, but he definitely had greasy fingers and was dressed in shabby clothes.
Congrats again to Pack and luelui. Let’s go Pens! (come on rad it’s ok to join in and support the other Penna team)
Barney,
I see you know Aqua Lung as well as you know Jeff Spicoli. Kudos to you, my friend.
Glad to hear that your Phils had a come from behind win. I saw the highlights on the “news at eleven.”
Barney,
You did it now. I have to get our my Jethro Tull 8 tracks and stay up all night and listen to them.
Break up the Pirates. They have won 7 out of 8.
Must be that Jason Michael helping the Pirates
Barney, if and when the Pens sweep the Flyers…. I will cheer them on to victory in the Stanley Cup finals. It aitn over yet…. almost
“Any one left in the pen that speaks english ?”
Wow. I almost forgot I was in Lancaster County.
Jason - This guy appears to have a pretty good track record except for last year in AAA. It will be intersting what you find out when you talk to him. Here is some info …..

He split 2007 between Jacksonville and the AAA Las Vegas 51s and is not currently assigned to any club for the 2008 season.
It was nice to see a game where we took advantage of some of the other teams miscues. Jeff really looked strong pitching.
It was also nice to see a game where we got the lead and the pitching and the defense kept it for the win. I always get uncomfortable in the six and seventh inning and they did it.
I feel another win tonight. GO STORMERS.
so…you’re saying that Ross WAS at the game last night?
Do released players make a habit of that?
Released is a relative term… Ross was at the game last night enjoying it with his fans.
