Eric Ackerman 0-2, 3.62 ERA |
| Chris Young 2-3, 4.75 ERA |
|---|
The Barnstormers are dreadful away from home. We could debate the reasons ad nauseum, but it won’t change the reality. Both their pitching and hitting performances suffer a precipitous drop-off in away games.
| Home | Away | |
| Average | .275 | .226 |
| On-base | .363 | .317 |
| Slugging | .452 | .384 |
| ERA | 4.21 | 5.09 |
Add it up and you get a 4-16 record. Even worse, if you take away the three-game series against the inept York Revolution, Lancaster is 2-15 in legitimate travel games.
Something happens to this club when it gets on a bus. If you only watched the Barnstormers’ home games this season – and witnessed their 9-7 record – you’d wonder how they could already be 10 games back in the loss column. The extent of Lancaster’s road struggles is troubling. There’s simply no way a team can contend with this level of performance in unfriendly confines.
This series against Camden is another test. The Riversharks are in first place in the Liberty Division and are 13-4 at Campbell’s Field. This is a chance for the Barnstormers to show they can beat a good team away from the Clip. That’s something they haven’t done much this entire season.
Hayes returns:
Von Hayes is expected back in the dugout after serving a two-game suspension over the weekend. The manager bumped an umpire during a heated confrontation after a controversial call during the ninth inning of Friday night’s game. This was the first time a Barnstormers manager has been suspended. OF Chris Van Rossum sat out two games last season after starting a bench-clearing altercation against Somerset.
Patterson in The Show:
Scott Patterson made his first big-league appearance Sunday.
Some quotes from a New York Daily News Article:
“I was thinking, ‘Man, is this really real?’” Patterson said of his first big-league jog in from the bullpen. “After the first pitch, it was all right.”
And from MLB.com:
“He’s been doing all right,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “He got off to a little bit of a slow start, but he’s been pitching better. He’s a guy that had a great spring training for us and came close to making the club. We’re anxious to see him.”
Box score:
RECORD: 13-24 … 4-17 on the road
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Canceled.
There can be no player of the game when one team commits eight errors. This is a matter of principle, at least on this blog.
The pitchers:
*Eric Ackerman made his first start since being yanked early against Long Island last week:
| 6 IP | 8 H | 8 R | 5 ER | 0 BB | 3 K |
Ackerman is now 0-3 with a 4.23 ERA. It’s impossible to evaluate his performance considering the defense that was played behind him. He got through six innings, which is impressive under the circumstances. He didn’t walk any. So that was good.
*Paul Thorp made his debut. Wait, Paul Thorp is on the team? You learn something new every day. Thorp is a former Yankees farmhand with a sparkling career ERA. He pitched for the Somerset Patriots last season. The righthander tossed two scoreless innings.
The hitters:
*The eight errors are not a misprint. They are an unfortunate new team record. Here is the tally …
Manny Mejia, 3
Ivanon Coffie, 2
Juan Francia, 2
Ackerman, 1
In Mejia’s defense, he’s not a first baseman. Injuries to Matt LeCroy and Ian Bladergroen have forced the backup catcher to play out of position. Kyle Nichols is listed as a first baseman, but manager Von Hayes doesn’t seem to consider Nichols an acceptable option.
*Juan Francia has committed eight errors in 22 games and is batting .178.
*Ivanon Coffie got his first Atlantic League hit. He’s 1-for-10 in three games.
*The offense continued to sputter. The Barnstormers managed just five hits. Their lone run came on an RBI single by Jutt Hileman in the seventh inning.
The bottom line:
There was a time when the Barnstormers had the look of a team that was better than its terrible record. That time is gone. This was their third consecutive lopsided loss. They’ve been outscored 23-5 since Friday night’s win at Newark. The eight errors, combined with being 11 games under .500 just 37 games into the season, make this a low-water mark in the franchise’s four-year history.
If the season continues at this pace, I’m going to dedicate this blog to table hockey.

good luck tonight guys!!!! GO ACK!!!!!
Let’s get a hook into these Sharks from the get go! Turn this dismal away record around and start handing it back.
Jump on them in the first inning and don’t let up until the final out of the ninth inning.
Let’s go Stormers!
dadTB
Von may need to renegotiate that $1 contract he signed after reading this note on Mike Lieberthal …
“He went through the formality of signing a minor-league contract (worth $4) so he could end his career as a Phillie.”
I think they gave Leiby the extra three bills to swear he absolutely would not try to play.
Go Crabs.. beat Ddddoork
is the game not on tonight?
why..isn’t the game on the radio or online?
I’m gonna try Camden’s online broadcast…
Maybe someone kidnapped Dave after the “dugout report”!!!!!
I don’t think there is a Camden Broadcast tonight.
yeah..Camden’s using a college station…music playing now.
The phone lines in Camden are not sending the signal from my equipment. I cut out once and cannot link back up. I am keeping a play-by-play on the Barnstormers site.
243 ..it seems your right…they only carry road games…can you believe it!
Maybe there’s technical difficulties (?). I was hoping to catch the game on 1490 am tonight and it wasn’t on. I even went to the Barnstormers’ website to listen on sportsjuice.com and it wasn’t on.
Maybe Dave was picked up by the team for a dollar.
I heard that was 50 cents more than WLPA is paying him… LOL!
PF…yeah I went there first BEFORE I posted that!
And thanks Dave for the update!
I guess they only carry road games cuz they haven’t drawn fans in the past.
down 2-0 says Dave…
Hey Dave, who’s pitching?
I know it says Ackerman on top of this post but it has been known to change in the past…
Ackerman is pitching. The Barnstormers have six errors through three innings. The radio feed is back for those who haven’t checked it out.
Thanks Jason..
Another error (#7) and this is only the 4th inning. What is up with all that? Is there some sort of strange fielding setup going on tonight or are we just plain jinxed!?
7-0 Camden after 4.
Did somebody bury a Camden jersey in front of the Clipp this year?
Come on guys, pull together .
This sounds painful for Dave:-(
ouch!!!!!!! what is going on with them??? I just came in and turned the game on.
This is unbelievable. What’s the record for most errors in a game? 7 has to be close.
Looks like a new record was set for errors in a game. According to the media guide the previous record was 5! Error number 8.
Things are not all right In the Barn.Errors and Strikeouts are getting ridculous. At least the strikeouts tonight were at a decent number, but no excuses for that many errors. The first half of the season is a definite loss.Route were going the second half Is not going to be any better.
It’s hard to believe The team is worst then last year.
I will have to check tomorrow. Ackerman should not have had five ER unless I misunderstood a ruling. It should have only been two.
How did Thorp look? Box score looks like he did well.
I sure hope they do better at home.
I think Dave should get “Player of the Game”. He sat through it all.
Oh yes Stormin.. agreed!
P..S.. New aviator coming any minute
New aviator? cool!
Is he/she flying into Lancaster Airport?
No.. New yankee symbol … duh
Yankees lost last night. No Patterson sighting.
He expected to head back to scranton.. soon
Yeah I was hoping to catch him on ESPN since the game was on last night.
I think I printed out every atricle on the internet written about him in the past 48 hours!!!
What happened to the Stormers last night?? Did any other players show up to the game.. execpt for Ack? Maybe they all wanted to watch the Yankee game too geezzz!
The Dork Crab game was close and entertaining.. Dddoooork won 2-1
Have fun tonight Stormin
Even if he goes down, he will be back! Unfortunatly it’s the “options game” where I think it’s 3 times the can send you back without fear of losing the player.
If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend reading “The 33-Year-Old Rookie: How I Finally Made it to the Big Leagues After Eleven Years in the Minors” by Chris Coste. He should be an inspiration to any of the guys playing Independent ball.
oh yes.. I saw that on WPVI out of Philly.. (the only news station to watch) I’ll have to get that book.
Ahwwwwww there we go
Ohhh….you meant “avatar”…right….
and….THERE it is!
Oh my, it really IS the yankees, isn’t it.
I can’t spell my way out of a paper bag.. please forgive me !
I have a banked several symbols to choose from so I’ll rotate
Barney Stormer:
I will have to pick that book up you mentioned.
Also, as some of you may recall, former Barnstormer, John Wolff (Infield Utility) – 2007 wrote a book with his Dad, called Harvard Boys about their experiences in minor league baseball. The book ends in January 0f 2007 so it does not include his expriences in Lancaster. However, maybe there will be a sequel
It is an easy and fun read. Especially the part about the living conditions they sometimes have to endure.
Jason’s comment “Paul Thorp made his debut. Wait, Paul Thorp is on the team? You learn something new every day.”
I think we need to add that to the arnstormers Blog Book of
Classic Lines.
Where the heck did my “B” go in “Barnstormers” in post #49? I guess me and Rad have a lot in common, we both can’t spell early in the morning!
Ha Ha.. I can’t spell any time of day
But I LOVE math
I love math too as long as it involves money!!!!
Rad – How about a nice #30 without that stinking Yankee logo!!!!!!
Next thing you’ll be rooting for the Cowboys!
(Only kidding – Let’s all enjoy Scott’s success)
Yes, go COWBOYS!
He is going to try for #70.. his Scranton & spring training #’.. and on all my Yankee attrie.. 30 is what they had available in Minn.
Al right Ultimate … LOVE the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Hey, did you hear they have a new show about the Dallas Cowboys? It’s called “Prison Break”.
I thought you Eagle fans would enjoy that. Some laughter in these times of dispair.
Some more laughter:
A conceited new rookie was pitching his first game. He walked the first five men he faced and the manager took him out of the game. The rookie slammed his glove on the ground as he yelled, “Damn it, the jerk took me out when I had a no-hitter going.”
oh sorry, there was a curse word in there…my filter wasn’t working properly on that one.
A man walks into a bar with a dog. The bartender says, “You can’t bring that dog in here.”
“You don’t understand,” says the man. “This is no regular dog, he can talk.”
“Listen, pal,” says the bartender. “If that dog can talk, I’ll give you a hundred bucks.”
The man puts the dog on a stool, and asks him, “What’s on top of a house?”
“Roof!”
“Right. And what’s on the outside of a tree?”
“Bark!”
“And who’s the greatest baseball player of all time?”
“Ruth!”
“I guess you’ve heard enough,” says the man. “I’ll take the hundred in twenties.”
The bartender is furious. “Listen, pal,” he says, “get out of here before I belt you.”
As soon as they’re on the street, the dog turns to the man and says, “Do you think I should have said ‘DiMaggio’?”
What the heck are all you posting about? Geez.
Anyway, howabout the ‘Stormers? They’re hard to listen to and hard to read about. It really appears that they’ve packed it in for the first half, doesn’t it? And is there something wrong with Lance? I know he is the “heart and soul” of the team but c’mon.
I don’t believe Von is enjoying is foray into indy ball. Normally, he’d be excited about the draft and the new talent about the be infused into his organization. Von likes teaching and is a good motivator of young kids…. and it appears some of the Lancaster players are lacking motivation.
How about, when they win 3 in a row, Booster Brownies for the whole team (and coaching staff, of course)?
I can’t wait till they sweep a series.
The bag comes off Mark’s head, DJ bakes brownies, Jason reaches 400,000 hits (oops, it already happened) maybe 500,00 hits, and I can put away the Optimism pills.
What a day that will be. We have the Bluefish for 4 games coming up this weekend. I am feeling pretty positive about that series. Come on, who’s with me?
Go Stormers.
Whoa, lookin’ to sweep a FOUR game series?
Whatever happened to baby steps?
I’m bringing the Smudge sticks….
basemom, when are you in town? That’s comin’ up soon, right?
I’m with you ‘Stormin!!!
djs – here is a follow up to the same pitcher in 58
A rookie pitcher was struggling at the mound, so the catcher walked up to have a talk with him. “I’ve figured out your problem,” he told the young southpaw. “You always lose control at the same point in every game.”
“When is that?”
“Right after the National Anthem.”
Now for those with the negative waves about this team we are not a joke and we will turn things around. The proof is when you google baseball jokes there is no reference to the team!
GO STORMERS!!!
I’ll be there for the “sweep”… if you don’t keep going forward what’s the point of getting up every day? GO STORMERS
basemom7.. whats your ETA to the Clipp?
If the guys do not start playing better von might replace them all. Lance …GOT ME, ok got me with the team.
Why are we not playing our first baseman? All we is use him for bullpen catching.
I suggested they replace the entire team with the Salsa little leaguers a few weeks ago. And I still think it would be a noticeable improvement, especially after last night’s slopfest.
I think whoever goes further in states Hempfield or Lancaster Catholic. If they both win states, let them have a playoff.
