Josh Hall 0-0, 4.22 ERA |
| Sean Thompson 1-0, 4.32 ERA |

Eight errors. As soon as you hear a figure like that, you ask the obvious question: Is that a record? Well, it’s a team record. The previous high for errors committed by the Barnstormers was five. It happened on May 12, 2005, which was the second game ever played at Clipper Magazine Stadium. SS Travis Hake made three errors that night. 1B Ryan Minor and 2B Juan Melo each made one.
What if you look beyond the Barnstormers? Was this an Atlantic League record? Who knows? The Atlantic League has a difficult enough time running an accurate transactions page after 11 seasons, so we’ll give it another decade or two to publish an actual record book. At the big-league level, the most errors in a game (post-1900) is believed to be 12. That was accomplished by the Tigers in 1901 and the White Sox in 1903. Of course, the players wore oven mitts for gloves and Cracker Jacks cost 1/3 of a penny back then, so it’s hardly a fair comparison.
The bottom line is the Barnstormers were historically bad in Camden Monday night and they’re on their way to a historically bad season. They have won 35 percent of their games to this point. If the Barnstormers continue at that pace, they’ll finish 49-91. There have been worse records in AL history — the 2004 Road Warriors went 23-103, for example — but this would rank among the worst seasons by a team with a home ballpark.
Thirty-seven games does not make a season and there’s plenty of time to turn things around — at least to a degree. The ‘05 team went from winning 38 percent of its games in the first half to 53 percent in the second half. The Barnstormers need to forget about winning a division title or even contending. They just have to get better incrementally.
It starts with revamping the offense, if that’s even possible at this stage of the season. The team’s batting average is down to .245. It ranks seventh in average, seventh in hits and seventh in runs. Thank goodness York is still in the league or the Barnstormers would have hit rock bottom. While the eight errors were an aberration, the hitting struggles are not. They have to find a way to score more runs or this summer is going to make people pine for Steve Booker and the good old days of 2007.
22 and counting:
Paul Thorp became the 22nd pitcher used by the Barnstormers. The righthander tossed two scoreless innings Monday night. Thorp has a lifetime ERA of 2.66 and has allowed just 252 hits in 280 innings despite having some issues with his weight over the course of his career. The numbers indicate he could be a nice addition.
The 22 pitchers, by the way, is one fewer than the team record. And it’s June 3. The Misery Tour ‘07 team used 23 pitchers. If you’re wondering, the pitching-thin ‘05 team used 21 and the championship ‘06 team used 20.
RECORD: 14-24
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Lloyd Turner (2-for-4, 2 runs scored)
One benefit to signing Ivanon Coffie is it allows Turner to return to his utility role. Instead of playing every game, he plays part-time and will likely be more productive because of that change. Coffie sat out against the lefty starter, which created a great matchup for Turner. He capitalized.
The pitchers:
*Josh Hall notched his first Atlantic League win:
| 6.1 IP | 7 H | 3 R | 3 ER | 1 BB | 2 K |
Those of you who read the actual content of this blog religiously — all six of you — have probably figured out I’m high on Hall’s chances of success at this level. Of the pitchers in the Barnstormers’ rotation, he has the best chance to be a top-end performer. He has the stuff and the right attitude. Hall allowed one run in the first six innings and kept his team in front.
*The set-up/closer duo was at work:
Ryan Cullen and Jose Cabrera recorded the final eight outs. They allowed five hits, but no runs (two inherited runners scored). Those late innings don’t feel quite as stressful with those two in the game back-to-back.
*Scott Patterson’s stay in the big leagues was brief. He was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday. The Yankees promoted P Dan Giese to take Patterson’s place.
The hitters:
*The offense showed a spark with seven runs on 12 hits after being held in check for three consecutive games. As usual, when the lineup gets moving …
*Mike Woods is the catalyst. He had two hits, scored two runs and stole a base. He also belted a run-scoring triple in the ninth.
*Juan Francia delivered two hits. The slumping 2B drove in a run with a two-out bunt single in the fifth inning.
*Lance Burkhart, whose average was down to .203, also came through with two hits. Following Manny Mejia’s rough defensive night Monday, Burkhart played first base.
The bottom line:
The Barnstormers bounced back after Monday’s eight-error debacle. They won a road game against a first-place team and put themselves in position to win just their second road series of the season Wednesday. The sun shines again in Lancaster, even though it’s raining.

C’mon, Jason.
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
You’re supposed to write about the good points, the things that will make happy and help us to forget about the depressing state of baseball in Lancaster.
My kids still haven’t asked where Lancaster is in the division race. If they do I’ll just change the subject. And if they try to look at the standings board at the Clipp Main Gate I’ll just point the other way and say, “Hey look, it’s CYLO!”
They’ll have a great time anyway…
And the fans keep paying…. all the while subsidizing the other ODP teams.
*shrugs*
any suggestions?
Hey I rooted for the 1972-1973 76ers who were the worst team in NBA history. For those that don’t know about this team they finished at 9 wins and 73 losses! What a team led by Fred “Mad Dog” Carter, Mel “That” Counts and Bob “The Golden” Rule (they even had cool names before Chris Berman). I still watched the games and listened on the radio. As a fan you need to take the highs and lows and remember it’s just a game.
As I stated earlier, the worst thing that happened was winning a championship in the 2nd year. In this age of instant gratification everyone wants things to happen right away. Patience people, patience. It’s been 28 years and I’m still waiting for the Phillies to win another World Series.
GO STORMERS!!!
Could be worse. Could be no baseball. Although I suppose that prospect would please some.
Barney, please…..28 years?
At least you’ve seen your team win one in your lifetime.
I’m not sure which is worse, not getting to the series at all, or getting there and blowing it in the bottom of the 9th. Thanks a lot, friggin’ Mesa!
Sorry…it still brings up certain emotions for me, and it’s been 10 years now.
And Mark, I agree. There could be no baseball, that would be worse. Although, as you eluded to, some may already say there is no baseball being played in Lancaster.
Pay no mind!! They’re just jealous, I’m sure.
I’m glad I missed the game last night, too. It sounds as if this team is on the verge of implosion. Probably wouldn’t be a bad thing at this point.
Things are bad. Probably as bad as they’ve been since June of 2005. But it’s not entirely the team’s fault. The Barnstormers have lost four of their best hitters and their No. 1 starting pitcher to either injury or affiliated ball. No team can sustain winning in that environment.
It would be nice if they didn’t commit eight errors and were a little better than 13-24, but there was no way they were going to contend under these circumstances. This was an avalanche of problems.
We’ll spend the next 100 games learning some things. Can this team find the players needed to regroup? Does Von Hayes have the demeanor needed to turn around a losing situation? It’ll be interesting to follow from that standpoint.
on a brighter note .. Brian Staviski has the highest batting average on the Travelers… .333
Nice going STAVO19
I have a strange feeling that Von is not going to be in Lancaster this entire baseball season. Not because he gets canned, but he will leave on his own accord.
True Story:
I was at a corporate function once and as a novelty they hired a few fortune tellers. I sat down with a palm reader and she asked me if I knew that I was a psychic and then went on a tangent about what I should do. I had a good buzz going and the details are fuzzy. She also said a few troubling things to me though that amazed me she even had the balls to say some of the crap she was saying. Like naming specific people I know who are going to die!
Point: Don’t ever go to a psychic. They can mess you up!
You know i saw that with Brian and that is AWESOME!!!!
Way to go Brian!!!!
djs – then you moved here and got to watch Mesa pitch with the Phils! My Mom is 83 and going to the Phillies game on Thursday afternoon. She still has a lot to say about Mesa from his Phillies days.
mark – I once saw a sign “Get your palm red for $5″. I paid my money and they dipped my hand in a can of red paint!
I’m glad you 2 can appreciate the lighter side of what’s going on. Yes, it’s only a game.
Can von replace the entire team???????
good luck tonight guys!!!!
Holy crap, I just noticed Lancaster has a new pitcher. *shrug* Whatever. Is Ackerman still with the team or did he quit?
I REALLY hope Ack is still here!!!
Well as a season ticket holder I’ll contiue to go to every game and cheer untill I have no voice. Not looking forward to this coming homestead with the tempature in the 90’s.,It’s going make for along four games.
Stormerfan86, I will meet you at the bumper boats.
Seriously that is why my season tickets are in the upper rows always in the shade.
I will also keep goin to these games until my voice goes cause I LOVE BASEBALL
That’s why having season tickets under the canopy on the third base side makes for a nice time at the game when the sun is shining brightly.
I feel for those fans on the first base side on a hot sunny day.
The Lancaster Barnstormers have Paul Thorp listed as #34, the same number as Tim McClaskey, who is on the DL. That can’t be running out of numbers yet.
That does seem a bit strange, doesn’t it, SiY.
Maybe they didn’t have any other uni’s with them on the road….?
dawn are you working tomorrow? i’m thinking about driving to camden tomorrow if you want to go?
They might be running low on their jersey budget, however, and maybe those two have the same shirt size.
And it could be worse…Patterson wore #30 for the Yankees the other day. The previous #30 was the guy that flew his plane into the side of a Manhattan apartment building last fall. I’m not sure I’d be keen on recycling that particular number on my back.
Stormin…I would assume that they only have a limited amount of numbers available…there will need to be some releases coming as there are currently 15 pitchers on the roster and 28 players on the roster in general….
Yes…Cory Lidle.
And the Atlantic League connection to that? Lidle’s brother Kevin played in this league for Bridgeport..I think it was 06~
oh and about post #22…I believe the team returns from Camden every night so they would have uniforms available…except tonight I guess since tomorrow is a 11: am game.
Because they need our full support Booby! In good and bad times.
good luck to the stormers tonight, i will be listening
I think it would be a mistake to release Eric. Even if he is struggling as a starter, he has proven himself as a great asset to the bullpen.
Just my humble armchair manager observation.
Agree with post #31!!!!
And who’s saying Eric should be released? Where is that Stormin?
Stormin’ In York unfortunately I got my Season tickets on the first base side In the middle of section 11.Everybody knows the sun never stops shining over there till the moon comes out.I think I need to switch next season.
Maureen I might have to take you up on that..lol
Well it does take a certain talent to pull off a mess like last night, I’ll give ‘em that. Beyond that, if they can’t take the heat, I’ll gladly show them the door.
thanks 243!
We are going to camden tomorrow we will be looking for Barnstormers.
good luck tonight guys
Hmm section 11? I must know you!
There’s a difference between being critical and being mean. Please avoid the latter. Thanks.
#33: Agreed, Ackerman’s been pretty stable and I wouldn’t be happy to see him go BUT my understanding is HE is the one that wasn’t happy and wanted out. Or so I’ve heard. Who knows what really goes on in there anymore.
crazy27, i’ll look for you at the game.
thank you jason!
I will have my red #27 jersey on
Oh Jason….looks like yer boys are playing mine again tonight @ 7:10. Gonna be watching?
Oh and that was a LOL statement!
i’ll have my pink barnstormers shirt on.
yes it was!
Mark,
The Nats are still playing? I thought they folded up shop for the season once Zimmerman got hurt.
LOL….you’d think so, wouldn’t you? He’s out and, last I heard, Kearns was out, Cordero is still out, Lo Duca is still out, Estrada is still out, Belliard is still out and Johnson is still out. I’m starting to wonder when Manny Acta is going to activate himself.
Oh…and I *think* I heard that Wily Mo and Dukes are both playing hurt. I think Albert himself could probably beat the Nats this series.
If I was managing the team the first thing I’d do is have everyone take a lap.
Then I’d sit them all down and tell them the story about my three legged dog, who was my best friend growing up, and how he was hit by a car right in front of me and how at 10 years old I held my best friend, looked him in his eyes, and said farewell.
Then I’d take them all out for snow cones… only to weed out the ones who ordered rainbow cones.
LOL….oh, and bust on the Nats all you want, they still have a much better record than the Barnstormers.
Maybe when you go on the DL they take your number away and give it to someone else. Isn’t that what happened to Ross? I wonder why people are not as uspset that Tim lost his number as they were when Ross lost his number?
Ok….I consider myself chastised. ———————————–>
Interesting league news….Ryan Radmanovich has signed with Somerset. Hmmm…wonder why we can’t find guys like this???
Yes to #53….I was wondering that myself!
Booby,
Not chastising. Just emphasizing the ground rules. Family members of the players use this site to follow the team. It’s important to me they don’t read anything they might find insulting.
Jason- We haven’t heard much from Lupton or Danos lately. Do you have a feel for what their impressions are so far? I can’t imagine they are real happy right now. I’d love to see a few quotes from them.
the guys need to know we support them no matter what. if your not behind the team why are you here???
cow bells just got a shout out from coffiee and the fans at newarks game!
Excellent point 27fan!
Wait till he gets back here and really hears cow bells and how fans are at home games.
What is the score??
1 to 0 us!!!
Supporting the team and being happy about the team are two different things. I paid for my season tickets and I go to the games, I support them. But their record sucks…again…and that IS being nice, and I’m not the least bit happy about it.
Last I heard it was 1-0 in the 3rd with Lancaster ahead.
dawn do you work tomorrow? if not do you want to go to tomorrow’s game?
stormers08..I emailed Dawn in case she doesn’t see this….told her to check the blog and answer you!
thanks are you her sister?
York and SOMD are tied. Bottom of the 4th.
Sorry 2-2
2-0 in the 6th in Camden, Lancaster leading.
About Eric, I was referencing post #15 and #16. That’s all. I am a Ackerman believer. He has done everything asked of him. I actually own 2 of his jerseys.
I know, I like him too and I wouldn’t be happy to see him go but I heard he wanted to go so I figured I throw the question out in case anyone knew anything. He has indeed done everything asked of him, yes, and 95% of it he’s done very well.
2-1 at the end of the 6th.
Jason must be taking the evening off from the Barnstormers…good for him if he is! He deserves a break every now and then. He does a great job keeping us informed!!!
Thanks Mark for letting those of us who are unable to listen tonight what the score is.
Do you think they are happy the way they are playing? I am sure they are not. We do not know what it is like to be them. We do not know what it is like to sit in that dug out and see the other team score. They are trying, like i said our Players playing first base are not first baseman. I just feel being nasty to them does not help them. anything that can go wrong as gone wrong for them. they do read this and they do get it ok.
3-1 so far in the 7th.
way to go guys,
In answer to posts #53 and #56 what happened with Peeples is he was released and the clubbie did not know that he was coming back so he gave his # to one of the new players. Well then Ross came back and the new player would not give up the # and the clubbie could not do anything about it. Now with McClaskey and Thorp it could be anything. Thorp could have asked McClaskey for the #, it could be a typeo on the website, or none of the extra jerseys that were sent on the road fit Thorp so when they get back home he could have a new #.
stormers08 NO!!
okay, i am still trying to figure how who everyone is.
Post 76 is right…being nasty towards the players or the manager or anyone else serves no purpose. These guys hate losing even more than we do. I am sorry that there are some season ticket holders on here that are not happy. You can either stick with them or not…you only hurt yourself if you stop going to games or you stop supporting them. Just an opinion.
true fans are there thru good and bad. i’ve leaned a lot tonight.
SOMD 3 York 3. Top of the 6th now in a rain delay. SOMD is threatening before they called for the tarp.
5-1 in the 7th? Something like that, was on the phone.
243shooter-thanks for the email
stormers08-yes, i work tomorrow; PLEASE KEEP ME in mind for the next one, i will need a day in advance notice. THANKS SO MUCH, that is so nice of you and I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!

we need to exchange emails
5-3 at the end of the 7th.
well, if nothing else, the bullpen certainly does make things exciting!
Barnstormer 5 Camden 3
DJ, what do you mean by that? What happened?
no problem dawn!
Geez wheres radical and kelley tonight? Have they sworn off the blog? LOL
Cullen came in, a few squib hits, a missed cover at first, lots of runners on the bases, a score or two.
But (as of right now) Stormers still ahead by 2, 5-3
Ahhh..I see.
As for Rad…she may be at York watching or well waiting out the Rain Delay…Big D is in town.
hey did I read it’s going to be 90 this week, guess I need to repack! I just want to say I am EXCITED to watch all of these guys play…even if my kid isn’t right now you know you still pull for all of them because they are a TEAM and because you know they wouldn’t be out there if they didn’t love the game! GO STORMERS
Basemom, it’s great to see your enthusiasm and being so far away from Lancaster! lol…you’ll be like a celebrity!
oh no I’ll have a bag on my head….oh that’s Mark! LOL
No Rad in York. Just the Stormin’ family hoping to see Derrick pitch.
You’d sure stand out if you did…we’d all know who you are at the game. You have to blend in…you don’t want to embarass Ian. Oh wait, maybe you do…isn’t that a mother’s perogative?
Basemom7 that’s cool you are coming this weekend. I hope you have a safe trip
dawn, we’ll exchange everything on thursday. i’ll keep you in mind because we’ve gone to several away games and sometimes chris cant make it.
Don’t worry I will blend in, it’s what we do!
Whew…that got a little too exciting.
Woohoo! Another double play!
Into the 9th, good guys up 5-3
Way to go guys!!! Let’s finish off them off quickly in the 9th. A couple of more runs and then a 1-2-3 in the bottom!
thanks stormers08
i would have LOVED to go!!!
Basemom7
make sure you stop by the radio booth and say Hi to Dave and I. We like to put a face to a name.
For everyone else…
I can tell you that each and every player on the Stormers want to win. Not just for their individual numbers, but for the team and for the fans.
Almost to a man they can’t believe the fan support here in Lancaster. I talk to almost all the players from each team, home and visitors alike, and they all say how nice Lancaster is and how much fan support the Stormers have.
If we could do any better, we’d be playing instead of watching.
This team has indured alot, more than any other team in the Atlantic League, and I truly believe they have a good chance of being there in the end.
Maybe I am the eternal optomist, but why not.
One game at a time.
Go Stormers…..
yeah juan!
Nice post Tom….exactly what we need to hear!
Well put Tom!!! I have heard some of those same things from players as well! They absolutely love the fan base they have in Lancaster!
By the way, they love the cowbells too!!!
6-3 in the 9th.
HO-Lee-Cats!
A triple for Woodsy!
6-3
MIKE WOOODS MIKE WOOOOOOOODS!(the section 11 cheer)
One game at a time.
Did anyone else see Woods on the television commercial?
I can’t wait to give him the %^&* about his “move” in the spot.
I’m cautiously optimistic…
7-3
WooHoo!
7-3!
way to go Juan and Stormers!!!! AWESOME!!!!
Dang it Mark, you must be listening to the radio…this sports juice thing is a pitch or two behind.
thanks tom! i know what it’s like at our house after they lose but it’s nice to hear it from you also.
DJ, that always got to me too. People would be posting things and I would not have heard what had happened yet.
Nah, I’m listening to sportsjuice too…the radio is probably all crackly with lightening. But it does vary quite a bit from one connection to the next.
wow guys what a turn around from last night. I was getting the kid ready he graduates tommorow night then off to Florida he goes Thursday
thanks dawn!
Anyone else know the Phillies score? It was 3-2 Phillies top of 9th and I suppose that means Lidge.
Anyone hear anything else?
Kelley, good luck with graduation. It sounds like it may have to be inside.
Philly won 3-2
As for some of the postings here tonight. the poor boys are beat up and tired, they truly to love the fans and need the support. You should have seen the faces when we were ringing th cow bells before the game Sunday when they came out of the locker room. Win or loose these boy’s do not need fans beating them up they are doing this for next to no money just support them it is not there fault..
Thanks Mark.
Unfortunately, no Utley HR
I hope not if it is there will be family fighting over who get’s to watch and who has to watch from tv down stairs. I am just glad he made it. This is the last one and it was a rough one
Congrats to him!!!
thanks
Update on our guys????

I didn’t see this mentioned anywhere, but Mike Ashmore’s Thunder blog states that Scott was sent back to Scranton by the Yankees.
Ditto Tom! They needed this win! Way to bounce back guys!!!!

We got the win. Tomorrow is a new day. One game at a time. Win tomorrow and you guys are back at the Clip.
well, good game guys!
And good-night ya friggin’ bloggers!
Great job, Dave (as always)
I am just a mom who wants to see her son follow his dreams and be happy, and I am blessed to know he is in a community like Lancaster where you all support your players. Thanks
York was suspended because of rain and will resume tomorrow at 5:30.
Nice walk home in the pouring rain.
We are all happy to have your son here! We continue to pray for his speedy recovery. It’s is awesome that you get the chance to come see him and want to to come and support his team! I hope you have a safe trip!
The wind and 20 degree temperature drop drove me indoors. The rain is sideways a lot of the time here at the moment.
Is anyone experiencing thunder and ligtening? I don’t have any of that here yet. It is windy and yes pouring though.
Ian was out in the pen the other night and said we have to much fun he wants to sit out there with us.. I just hope those drunk guys in section four do not come back any time soon or they are going to have a cow bells up side there head if they pick on another player
A little lightening, not much and not very strong.
OMG.. Stormers won????
Sorry I wasn’t here.. Dinner At Bent Creek rules over sitting on the couch with a laptop !!!!
Maybe I should go out to dinner more often, seems to be good luck!
“Storm” we had rain, wind and lightening here in Willow Street.
Nighty nite all
basemom.. you’ve got mail
Kelley.. I’ll help out with those drunks.. No ONE picks on our boys. I’ll bring the Tater cannon, that should scare them away!!
confirmed-Patterson went back to AAA.
BRONX, New York (Ticker) — The New York Yankees promoted pitcher Dan Giese from the minors prior to Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Giese, who had his contract purchased from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, likely will pitch against the Blue Jays.
New York will send Joba Chamberlain to the mound Tuesday for his first career start. But Chamberlain is on a strict 70-pitch count, leaving Giese as a likely candidate to pitch in long relief.
Giese, 31, went 4-2 with a 1.98 ERA in 13 games at Scranton this season. In a corresponding roster move, the Yankees optioned reliever Scott Patterson to Scranton.
Nice game guys, see you on wed.
Patterson knew he wouldn’t be there long
but he DID go up,
I see the comments about Ackerman here and it was never really answered.
He’s still on the roster so I’m assuming he is on the team still.
Were there talks of letting him go?
Did he mention wanting out?
What’s going on with him? And how’s it looking for him from the lockeroom/von’s point of view?
How people think Von is still going to be here next year?
I just checked Brian Staviski stats. Since I follow pitching.. not sure about batting stats…. what are : SLG of .667 and a OBP of .429… Are these Slugging and On base %.
He has by far the highest on the team. I assume these are good ?
Rad- That is correct.
WOW.. are we looking at Brian being the next .. or first non-pitcher to head to MLB???
Pump your brakes. It will take a position player a bit more time to get the call. Pitching is so thin at every level, so they have a better oppurtunity if they pitch well. There is no doubt that Stavitsky can hit, so time will tell.
Thanks Deuse.. guess I’m just being very optimistic
Rad – I am just so glad he got a chance and he will be back! If not with NY then with someone else. Does this mean you can get rid of the stinking Yankee logo now? I think that would be fair, then when he get’s called up next month you can switch back! A Chase Utley picture would be nice to celebrate those 1st place Phils!
Also, those are excellent stats for Brian
GO STORMERS …..
No worries. I like the enthusiasm. There hasn’t been much to be excited about to this point.
oh yes.. a Chase picture would be very nice..
I DO love the Philly teams.
Remember… I’m just a temporary Yankee fan
You know I’m only kidding. I also will be rooting for him again when he gets back!
That is AWESOME for Brian! I want to wish him the best!!!!
