Nick Renault 0-1, 5.18 ERA |
| Darren Sack 2-2, 5.31 ERA |

The Barnstormers have a chance to end two undesirable streaks today. They can win their first day game of the season and they can win their first road series outside of Pennsylvania.
For some reason, the Barnstormers aren’t so good under the sunshine (or overcast skies, for that matter). They are 0-8 in day games, including a pair of blown ninth-inning leads in a four-day span last month. Day/night splits are generally disregarded as random variation in baseball, so it’s easy to consider this futility a fluke.
The road woes are more disconcerting because some teams consistently struggle in unfriendly environments. The Barnstormers have played five road series against teams other than York. They were swept by Long Island, Southern Maryland and Somerset (in a four-gamer). They’ve played two series at Newark and lost five of the seven games.
So Nick Renault takes the mound with a little history against him. Renault’s season has been up and down to this point. Is he the guy who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and posted this line in his debut?
| 7.2 IP | 4 H | 2 R | 2 ER | 0 BB | 4 K |
Or is he the guy who has posted this line in his last three starts?
| 16.2 IP | 22 H | 12 R | 12 ER | 8 BB | 6 K |
The Barnstormers obviously hope it’s Door No. 1. Renault has exhibited grood command in three of his four outings — issuing one or zero walks. He had one six-walk performance that looks like an outlier.
This is the end of a tough six-game road trip against a pair of first-place teams. If the Barnstormers can pull out a win today, they’ll return home with a split. All things considered, that wouldn’t be so bad.

Box score:
RECORD: 15-24
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Danny Gonzalez (3-for-5 with four runs scored)
Gonzalez raised his average to .301 and extended his errorless streak to 28 games. He is remarkable. He has played every inning, despite the Atlantic League not having many off days. He’s tied with Mike Woods for the team lead in hits, is second to Woods in runs scored and is sporting a .405 on-base. All of this at shortstop, the most important defensive position on the field.
The pitchers:
*Nick Renault had an uneven performance:
| 5 IP | 8 H | 5 R | 5 ER | 3 BB | 1 K |
The righthander struggled early, recovered well enough to retire 10 out of 12 batters at one point, before struggling again in the fifth inning. Renault earned his first Atlantic League win, although his ERA has climbed to 5.83 and he has allowed 17 earned runs in his last 21 2/3 innings.
*Yamel Guevara returned to the bullpen after one rough start. He fired two scoreless innings. It looks like this might be the role he’s best suited for at the moment.
*Pat Cassa has fired 4 1/3 scoreless innings since his ninth-inning struggles against Long Island on May 26. Putting pitchers in the right roles makes a world of difference.
*Ricardo Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth. This was his second consecutive relief appearance, so it appears he has been moved to the pen to make room for Tim McClaskey, who is about to be activated off the disabled list.
*A big hitting day takes some of the pressure off the pitching. Even though the Barnstormers allowed 11 hits and 14 baserunners, no one pays much attention because the offense stole the show.
The hitters:
*This offense is starting to resemble the all-or-nothing 2007 team. During this road trip, the Barnstormers scored 30 runs on 40 hits in their three wins. They scored five runs on 13 hits in their three losses.
*Every player had at least one hit Wednesday, and seven players had at least two hits, so this was a day for some batting averages to get healthy.
*Ivanon Coffie is breaking out. He has three doubles in his last five at-bats.
*Lance Burkhart is returning to form. He’s 4-for-9 with five RBIs in his last two games to drag his average back up to .220.
*Juan Francia collected two hits to climb back over the Mendoza line at .207.
*Lloyd Turner is 7-for-18 in his last five games and is up to .241.
The Barnstormers have a bunch of guys performing below expectations. Usually, if given enough time, they’ll rebound. We’re starting to see that happen.
*Kyle Nichols drove in three runs. He has 29 RBIs in 36 games, including his time with Southern Maryland. He also played first base for the first time, which meant no catchers playing out of position.
The bottom line:
Maybe the Barnstormers needed to hit rock bottom. They responded to their eight-error game with back-to-back wins on the road against a good team. They’ve finally won a day game. They’ve finally won a road series outside this great state. They ended a tough road trip at 3-3 and return home for a four-game series against Bridgeport. Things look a lot better than they did 48 hours ago.

Let’s go, fellas!
I’ll listen when I can, other than that, it’s up to you Jason!
Good luck today guys!!!
What is the status of Matt LeCroy?
whoa…3 runs in the 1st?
A Day game.. nice.
I actually get to listen and blog at the same time. I take it we’re ahead 3-zippo??
I don’t mean to offend anyone but that #23 up in the picture looks much better on Ross’ back than Nick.
Well THAT figures, the INSTANT i turn on sports juice they get a 3 run double to tie things up.
I hate when I do that.
That’s it release renault and give Ross back his number !!!!
It doesn’t seem the Stormers got Renault’s Door #1 today.
End of 1, what a relief.
I guess that would solve the #23 problem.
Sounds like a slug fest today.
HAHA…it sounds like some of those kids at the game are sitting right there in the booth w/ Dave.
Must be cozy there.
Woohoo! A double shot of Coffie!
(sorry, that’s as good as I could muster)
dang it, Coffie got doubled up.
Ok guys! I am tired of the talk about the #23. The fact is that someone else now has that # and you have to let it go. It is just a # on a jersey, it is not the end of the world.
wow what an inning!
i agree about number 23. it’s not nick’s fault that ross was released and if was given that number and then ross was brought back.
he was given not if was given
Last comment ever from me on this #23 thing. Here is the current roster for pitchers which I got from the team website (6/4/08 @ 1:05pm):
21 Ackerman, Eric
36 Cabrera, Jose
37 Cassa, Pat
33 Cullen, Ryan
25 Gomez, Ricardo
14 Guevara, Yamel
3 Hall, Josh
10 Mattox, D.J.
34 McClaskey, Tim (DL)
16 Muessig, Jeff (DL)
23 Renault, Nick
40 Rleal, Sendy
32 Songster, Judd
34 Thorp, Paul
39 Tyler, Scott
Notice that pitchers on the DL are listed that way, so Ross isn’t on the DL or is he? The other thing is the roster does show McClaskey and Thorp with the #34 so that should end all the speculation about Tim. If there is a problem with players numbers and status. why don’t we address them to the front office and not here. As Jay said in #15, it’s getting old. We finally are having a big game and 5 of the 17 comments (30%) are about a picture with Nick wearing #23?
Sorry if I have offended anyone, but all I wanted to do was check in on the how we were doing in the game. Thanks for letting me vent. I’m done!
Ditto Barney. Thanks.
BTW. Nick is a great guy to talk to. He came over the first game in York and noticed us wearing Barnstormer jerseys and striked up a conversation. We complimented him on his first start and welcomed him to Lancaster. It’s the player, not the number.
Keep up the good work Nick.
Speaking of things that are getting old, any answers concerning LeCroy? Last I heard he was getting yet another MRI but that was at least a couple of days ago.
i agree stormin’
I beg to disagree… you ask any MLB player.. it is the # on your back. They are a very superstitious bunch.
Leeeee Croy just needs more cookies !!!
with the jersey # No Nick was not given that number by the clubbie he just took it. and would not give it back because of his superstitious things he goes through. The # does mean alot to some players. Ross was here from day 1. Nick could have said I understand and you can have it back. In response to posting #19 Ross is on the DL inactive until he is done with rehb.
You go you !!!!
Opps. I mean.. You go girl.. friend.. tell those boys how it is !!!
either way ross wasn’t here when nick took it. he was allowed to pick his number and 23 was available. give it a rest!
You tell them, Jay. I’m getting tired of it, too!
Hey we have a 11-5 lead. Sweeeeeeeet! Dave said we have reached out season high HITS total. Way to go Stormers.
I am feeling really good about this next homestead.
I’ve not posted much, if anything, about this #23 “issue”.
I was hoping it would die off.
From now (well, whenever I click ‘Submit Comment’) until eternity I’ll do what I can to ignore whatever posts come up again regarding anything related to it.
Anyone care to join me?
Gee, where’d that emoticon thingy come from?
It seems to have mis-interpreted my closing paren. mark.
Anyway, on with the game.
Yes Burk. 13-5. See, we can hit the ball. Season high HITS and season high RUNS. I wonder what Von said to them after that 8 error game?
OK now boys.. save some runs for tomorrow night so we can show basemom7 a great game !!!
DJ, the icon is your computer agreeing with your comment. Sometimes computers know best.
Gee, everytime I hit REFRESH we have more runs!
Not that it’s a bad problem to have, of course.
Dave.. if you see this…. Lancaster and surrounding counties are undera tornado watch.
Nice my kiddo is at grad. practice then a “senior” picnic . Lets hope the stormer hold off a few hours.
Then go away for a while djs… LOL
Keep refreshing (but only when we are batting please). Now Pat, no pressure and let’s get that ERA down.
Rad….LOL…it seems that you have a habit for typing “stormer”
That’s cute.
Ha Ha .. look, I’m so used to typing Stormers.. I did up on 36 instead of STORM !!!!!
I’m still laughing at that one .. LOL
9th inning!
Is cassa pitching?
Maybe the Yankees should have sent Farnsworth down and kept Patterson.
You can say that again Stormin… when is the Rev Crab game being made up?
Last nights game was suspended and they are finishing it at 5:30 today then starting the regular game shortly after that.
You going ??
Come on Jutt hit the bridge !!!!!
I’ll settle for an RBI
Nope, I teach at church on Wednesday nights. I might stop by after church to see how it is going.
Wow, 14-5 now.
We win, We win. Way to go guys. Now let’s keep in going at the Clip.
Nick gets a well deserved win.
Now back to work everyone.
WooHoo!
Day game series won!
Non-PA series won!
Nice job, guys!
great job guys!
Great Job guys!!!! See ya tomorrow night!!!
Oops, of course I mean “Day game won”.
Not “Day game series won”
That just doesn’t make sense.
I got caught up in the moment.
Fabulous boys, just fabulous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it’s OK djs.. we’re all caught up in the win today
Just a comment on dl vs inactive….they are 2 entirely different things. There is no such thing as dl inactive kelley..you are either dl (and thus listed on the roster as such) or inactive. I believe dl you are paid and inactive you are not…remember last year when Burkhart had his mysterious injury….he was inactive and not paid. Ross was released and had surgery and has not been reactivated. Technically he is not a member of the team so he doesn’t show up on the roster because he is still “released”.
And if the number was available when Nick picked his…..it was because Ross was released and the number was available.
Just to let everyone know. Ross used to have #6 in high school and college and would have actually wanted that when he came here but it was not available. Now that it is, he actually wanted #6, so he is happy, so should we be that the Stormers have won a series out of PA and won a day game and actually had a laughter. As I said before,
one game at a time,
and now its on to Lancaster and keep it going.
GO Stormers!!!!
Wow, great game guys! Wasn’t able to listen to the game, how many innings did Nick pitch? Now maybe the Phils can put up a 10 spot tonight so when Griffey hits #600 tonight it won’t affect the outcome.
Nick went 5 innings.
Barney, in your scenario, #600 could potentially effect the outcome if there are 10 men on base.
Obviously, you hadn’t thought of that, eh?
Yahoo…a 3-3 roadtrip…Day game win…It’s a gr8 day!!
Thanks Siy
Good thing we played this afternoon, weather doesn’t as good for tonight. I wonder if Griffey hits #600 in the 1st inning and then the rain comes in the 3rd inning, how long would they wait out a delay to make they game official. How would you like to be the one making that decision!
djs I thought I spotted a tear in your eye because of big win, but then I realized it was just some water on my monitor. If we are behind now we know what to chant when the ‘Stormer are up. Instead of Frost Frosty we will chant Refresh Refresh
Just checked out the box score. Great job for the bullpen pitching a shutout … GO ‘STORMERS
Did we just win a series on the road.I’m so confused If we have a good team or not. They show signs of being a dominant team, then the next game they play like first year rookies. We need games like today In second half.
Barney, I’m just proud to help out the team however I’m able. If it’s something as simple as clicking on those green arrows, well, all the better!
Next time I see Von or Keith I’ll discuss renegotiating my contract.
Can’t wait to be back at the clip over the next four days..
Hey, no more school…no more school nights…sounds like week-night Barnstormers games on my horizon!
Just got home from running around and doing errands to see that the Barnstormers won again today!! What a great job, guys.
Like I said in a couple of threads ago, hit them hard in the first innings and keep that pressure up throughout the entire game. Let them know that you came to play and that nothing they throw at you is going to intimidate you… Nothing!
This was a good all-around effort from pitching to hitting to fielding. 17 hits is going to win a few games. No errors at all today… perfect! That’s what bearing down and turning it around is all about. Don’t get complacent ’cause of your success these past two days, but keep that push going not only against the Riversharks, but for all opponents.
Good job!
Let’s Go Stormers!
dadTB
We were at the game today, It was kids day we had first graders all around us. Hey, did dave say anything about a guy with a cow bell?? if he did I am sorry for this story but if not some will laugh. There was a guy in a shirt that said cowbell guy and he walked around yelling and banging cowbells together. Funny part no one cared. I do not see the cow bell thing catching on. No one could hear my cow bell those kids can yell and scream.
It was nice to see the guys hitting, way to go.
Maybe the hitting is back now. Looks like the relief pitching is adding their fair share of positive outcomes to the games also. Hopefully, this is the beginning of the “great turnaround.” The games are definitely more enjoyable now.
