Josh Hall 1-0, 6.18 ERA |
|
Carlos Castillo 1-2, 4.94 ERA |
|---|
Eric Ackerman’s gem against the Ducks was the second terrific starting pitching performance in the last three days for the Barnstormers. Nick Renault, of course, handcuffed the Revolution for eight innings on Sunday. These two outings, combined with the recent bullpen dominance, are further evidence this team has enough pitching to win.
The Barnstormers’ team ERA is 4.55, which ranks third in the league. This franchise has never ranked higher than fifth in ERA in its three previous seasons. Some of that has been caused by a lack of pitching. Some of it is caused by playing at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
If you look a little deeper, the Barnstormers have the lowest batting average against in the league at .261 and are the only team that is allowing just one hit per inning. In other words, this is the most difficult staff to hit, even more difficult than Somerset’s highly-regarded group of pitchers.
The team deserves some credit here. Not much went according to the original plan. The projected 1-2-3 starters are no longer in the rotation and it took three weeks to put the bullpen together properly. If you lose four pitchers to injury and an ace to affiliated ball and still rank among the league leaders in ERA, you’re doing something right.
Now the Barnstormers will try to work the same magic with the offense.
Pitching matchup:
Josh Hall has been a lucky charm since joining the rotation. Even though his ERA is inflated, mostly because of his last bad start, the Barnstormers are 5-0 when Hall pitches. In fact, the team is 8-1 when Hall or Zack Parker takes the mound and 12-30 when it’s someone else.
Carlos Castillo was among the best pitchers in the Atlantic League for the Road Warriors last season. He posted a 3.34 ERA in 20 starts. He was nearly traded to the Barnstormers last August, but opted to leave for Taiwan instead.
Alumni news:
*Kyle Nichols, who was released by the Barnstormers Saturday, has resurfaced with the Riversharks. The DH went 3-for-4 in his debut for Camden Tuesday night. This is Nichols’ third Atlantic League team in the span of two months. He started with Southern Maryland before being traded to Lancaster in May.
*Reggie Taylor made his season debut in the Mexican League Tuesday night. The OF went 3-for-4 with two doubles for Tabasco.

Box score:
RECORD: 21-31
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Lloyd Turner (3-for-5 with a triple and home run)
The utility man is showing why he has become a full-time starter. Turner is 19-for-46, which equates to a .413 average, this month. Whether he’s at 2B, 3B or RF, he keeps producing. He’s on pace for one of the best seasons of his career.
The pitchers:
*Josh Hall improved to 2-0:
| 7 IP | 4 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 4 BB | 3 K |
Hall allowed Alex Sanchez’s leadoff homer and then put together five consecutive hitless innings. It wasn’t an overpowering performance – only three strikeouts – but it was outstanding. Hall lowered his ERA to 5.19 as the team improved to 6-0 in his starts.
*Sendy Rleal remains a mystery. One night he looks great. Another night he looks like this:
| 0.1 IP | 2 H | 4 R | 4 ER | 2 BB | 0 K |
The bullpen, brilliant for the last few weeks, faltered. The Ducks were trailing 9-1 when the eighth inning began, but came within one baserunner of bringing the tying run to the plate.
*Jose Cabrera calmed the nerves. He worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to record his fourth save in five chances.
The hitters:
*Greg Blosser’s comeback started slowly at 0-for-10. That didn’t deter manager Von Hayes from putting the new addition in the cleanup spot Wednesday night. The move paid off. Blosser went 2-for-4 with a double. As the Barnstormers look to ignite their offense, Blosser is a real wildcard. Can he resemble the elite hitter from 2000-02? If so, things look a little different for this group. It’ll be an interesting story to follow.
*Juan Francia continued his hot streak with a leadoff homer. Francia is batting .345 this month. The Barnstormers may have found something with Francia and Mike Woods in the 1-2 spots.
*Woods had three singles and scored a pair of runs. He also registered his league-leading 17th steal, which is a career high. It would be nice to see a big-league organization give this guy another chance. He deserves it.
*Every member of the lineup had at least one hit. The team registered 16 in all, which was its second-highest total of the season.
*Manny Mejia was out of the lineup for the first time since May 22.
The bottom line:
A flawless first seven innings gave way to some tense moments in the eighth, but the Barnstormers held on for a series win at Long Island – traditionally a tough place to play. The team is 13-12 since its dreadful 8-19 start and is showing some real signs of improvement.

Good luck tonight!!! Last night you brought your own kind of strom through Long Island…keep the clouds looming and the lightening striking!
We really should have a spell checker here…or an “edit post” button.
Nichols bats .189 for us and goed 3-4. He did good for SOMD and now seems to fair well with Camden, so far. I wonder if the chemistry was ever there for him and Lancaster.
It’s funny before the season started it was all about the offense and the concern for the pitching. We now are at a 180 degree swing. Pitching is there and the offense is not. I guess that is what happens when 3 of the 4 players lost to affiliated ball is offensive.
Go Stormers, finish LI.
Yes, DJ, there should be. I often find I type and click submit before I reread the posting. However, I will just throw out there that even professional proofreaders catch errors 85% of the time. Interesting, isn’t it?
I know I could use a spell checker I read it looks good post it and wonder howI did not see it.
Good Luck Tonight Stormers!!!
Way to go Reggie!! Hopefully, things will continue to go
well for him!
Go ’stormers!! Great win last night!!
Here is a little trick. Type your comments in Word and spell check. Then copy what you typed, and paste it into the blog comments. Now back to baseball …
It is amazing how we were worried about the pitching. Let’s just hope we start hitting. As Jason has stated the strikeouts are killing us. These guys need to put the ball in play more and see what happens. I think it’s time to start choking up on the bats fellas for some better control.
I agree with the hitting issue… we need more hits and less strike outs, for sure! Last night was a prime example of good pitching, hitting, and fielding by this team. We have it in us to do so, but we have been so inconsistent.
I was at Sunday’s game and watched Ivanon Coffie go with a pitch and hit it to left field. Now that’s what I’m talking about. He was batting left handed and I know that right field wall is very enticing, but he went with the pitch for a single.
I was so pleased to see him do that and succeed.
We seem to try the sacrifice bunt well enough, but I would love to see a good ‘hit and run’ develop this year. There are some teams in this league that have it down pat. I think we could, too, if we attempted it more often.
I love armchair ‘quarterbacking’ or whatever a baseball fan would call it.
Good luck tonight, guys.
Go Stormers!
dadTB
So anyone care to guess which Barnstormers will make the All Star team?
Which game are you going to in SoMD crazy27fan?
Best of luck to Reggie!!!
Great win last night!!!
Good luck tonight!!
i am going to sunday.s game. is anyone else.? when does the voting end for the all-star team? i’ve only voted a couple of times.
im also goin on sunday, hope to see other fans there too-
i voted a couple of times and have no clue when the voting stops.
All Star voting stops July 3.
Patriots manager Sparky Lyle and Long Island Ducks manager Dave LaPoint will be the All Star managers. I can’t believe that Newark’s Wayne Krenchicki did not get it. After all, he turned the Bears around.
Who decides who the managers will be for the All Star team????
I thought the two teams that went to the finals would be in it. Last year is was Tommy John (Bridgeport) and Frank Klebe (Lancaster). But with them moving teams around in the new divisions it would have been Sparky Lyle (Somerset) and Wayne Krenchicki (Newark), but they are now in the same division.
But since Newark won it all, he would get the nod over Lyle but the game is at Somerset, so who knows. Maybe Jason knows, he knows everything. (A spin off the Mikey commercial)
I believe Joe Klein picks the managers. It’s usually the manager of the host team and then someone selected from the opposing division. LaPoint made sense because John did it last year.
I think we are going to Saturday’s game, depends on lance dogs . It is doing good, but i need someone to come check on her. If we do not go Saturday we will go Sunday. I will let you know.
I’d take Reggie back in a heartbeat.
#9 dadtb – agree 100%!
When Larry Bowa came up to the majors, the other team played him like a little leaguer. He knew he wasn’t a home run hitter and learned bat control by choking up. The man ended up with over 2,000 hits in his career. I really enjoy watching Juan Francia (and slap hitters in girl’s softball) because they know their limitations and seem to have pretty good bat control. If you watch any old Phillies highlights you will notice that Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt always choked up on the bat when they got 2 strikes. I know it drives me crazy watching Ryan Howard when he has the whole left side open. I wish these guys would follow what Ivanon did and give it a try and “hit em where they aint”. After all we won’t see any Atlantic League home run highlights on Baseball tonight!
Remember, more hit and run = more cowbell! GO’STORMERS!!!!!
Ditto to #19!
I definitely believe that Michael Woods will be an All-Star. I believe that Danny Gonzales may also be on the team.
As for pitchers… Jose Cabrera in relief.
Other potentials:
Jutt Hileman
Lloyd Turner
Manny Mejia
We just got a nasty thunderstorm pass right over us in West Willow, Pa. Most T-storms go around us, but not this one! We lost the electricity for a second or two.
Go Stormers!
dadTB
I really wanted to do the Father’s Day Camp, but my arthritis is causing a problem with my right hand and forearm… Dang!
It’s not so much the hand itself, but I have what is called ‘bossing’ of the carpal bones and it’s creating inflammation on my tendons and ligaments in the forearm. Anyone else have this going on? I had a cortisone shot in both hands about a month ago… Great!
I’ve been waiting for this camp to occur since I was told of it’s ‘possibility’ last season.
I guess there’s a little boy in my wanting to play on the Big Boys’ field.
dadTB
crazy 27- yes let us know if your going on sunday instead of saturday. we can follow each other down. going on sunday ‘our boys’ ride home with us instead of riding the bus. actually, i sleep and they drive.
Potential rain delay here – stay tuned. Skies are threatening, but it looks like the storm may pass to the north.
Looks like we’re OK on the rain front – for now.

Those storms look ominous on the Accuweather radar screen.
The guys are doing really well. I’ve been in the garage preparing to go fishing on the river tomorrow. Two of my favorite things this time of the year is to prep for a fishing trip and listening to the Stormers on 1490 WLPA. I’ve been smiling since the first inning!
We are official and we are in the lead at the game delay… Yes!
Run for cover, Dave!
Lance is on one of those tremendous streaks he gets into during the past two games. Way to go, Lance!
I’m loving every second of it. Fantastic!

Is Hall still pitching??? A 3-hitter threw six isnt shabby at all. Let’s go Josh
crazy….did you head dave? lance has tons of bruises. ouch!
Ha Ha.. I did that in Camden.
You automatically put the radio on and can’t find Dave. Then you say to yourself.. duh !!!
L.T. HOMER !!!!!!
Way to go Lloyd and go Stormers!!!
One of the wrong things is sports: when the players think they are bigger than the umpire. Granted these are high school kids….but they should have known better.
It looks like the pitcher and catcher conspire to bean the ump.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3450245&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab2pos1
Anyone got relief for a 3 day headack?? I have tried everything. I am ready for my head to blow off. sorry i could not listen I needed to lay down.

Let’s go Stormers!!!!!
Umm….fellas…..we don’t need to go back to the Barnstormers of a few weeks ago
Oh no.. I think I need to turn the radio off. If they lose this one, I will be heart broken.
Just heard Dave say the game was getting “creepy”. Who went in to pitch after Josh Hall? Or is he still in?
Let’s add some more cushion runs now guys!!!

Way to go Guys!!!!
I’m in the mood for a crab bake.Lets make It three in a row, Go get SOMD next four games. Can’t wait till Monday
Go Stormers!!
Nice a win!!!!!!!! good luck today at SMD.
Good luck today guys!!!!
#99 I’m also ready for a crab bake
Sounds like it was a great “Duck Hunt”. 2 of 3 and we won the series. Next up, SOMD. Good luck and I agree, we are ready for a “Crab Bake”.
“Unrleal” – Good one Rad. – Come on Von, let’s see some of my favorites like Thorp!
It sitll puzzles me why Sendy is still here. Von probably was waiting to put him in when we had a big lead because he dosn’t trust him and he still almost blows it for us.
I was one to give him time but that time is now over. I feel he needs to go to make room for a dependable pitcher.
Sorry, “still” instead of “sitll”.
Sendy hasn’t had a bad outing in a while, if I’m remembering correctly.
Before last night’s fiasco, he had reduced his ERA from the teens to the 5+ area which is quite an accomplishment.
It was still frustrating to listen to that happen last night, but lately this has NOT been the norm for any Stormers bullpen pitcher.
I can not take credit for “Unreal”, Kelley was the creative brain behind that one! Pat on the back G.F.
Crazy27- I would be more than happy to look after your dog. After baseball the four legged creatures are my favorite.(Golf is a close third) If you need a reference simply ask #27. I’m sure he’ll tell you that I come highly recommended
Deuce, thanks but my brother in law is staying here for the day.
Beautiful. Have fun. Just let Lance know if you need help in the future. He knows where to find me.
Ok.. is it Lance the dog with the bruises or Lance the catcher with all the bruises??
Lance the dog had eye surgery and has the thing on her head like a lamp shade, but she finds ways to get to it. So she can not be alone for long periods of time even in her cage. Lance the catcher got burised during the game last night but I am not sure how.
If you think this is bad you should be here. My husband said that was not the smartest thing I ever did calling the dog Lance .
ha ha.. I’m laughing at that one too!!!
Maybe you could change his name to “CATCHER” or something of that nature
OK. Now I know there is a Lance the dog. I also know of a Quincey the dog.(Named after our former leadoff hitter.) Does anyone know of any other pets that are named after any of the Stormers? Not that this counts but friends of mine have Chase the dog, named after a certain second baseman in Philly
He could be named after Chase the bat retrieving Golden Retriever, in Trenton.
