The Barnstormers’ offense, on the whole, hasn’t been bad this month. The team is averaging five runs a game and is collectively hitting .276. The trouble has been a lack of consistency. There are great nights and quiet nights. Still, the overall production is somewhat surprising since the Barnstormers have played all 17 games without the expected heart of their order and have played 10 of those games on the road.
How have they endured? They’ve received huge contributions from two lower-profile sources. Lloyd Turner and Juan Francia have been Lancaster’s best hitters this month. Turner is batting .413 and has a ridiculous .500 on-base percentage. Francia is hitting .350 with six extra-base hits. The duo has combined to score 23 runs and drive in 17.
Turner and Francia reinforce the need to build around players who were in affiliated ball recently. Of the Barnstormers’ 11 active position players, only Turner, Francia and Jarred Ball were part of an organization last season. Players who come to the Atlantic League from Double-A or Triple-A often perform beyond expectations. Ball, of course, is a notable exception at this point.
Francia’s turnaround has been remarkable. On June 2, he looked like a player on the roster bubble. He was hitting .178 and had committed eight errors in 22 games. Now the second baseman looks like an intregal part of the team’s plan going into the second half.
The Barnstormers believe they’re only one hitter away from being a contender. The team hopes DH Matt LeCroy can return to the lineup next week. 1B Ian Bladergroen is on target to return before the second half begins. With those two, and the intriguing Greg Blosser, things should start looking up for the offense.
In the meantime, the Barnstormers can thank Francia and Turner for keeping the lineup afloat when so many of the big bats weren’t around.
Strike ‘em out:
Following Monday night’s loss at Long Island, manager Von Hayes reportedly had a meeting with his hitters to discuss their soaring number of strikeouts.
In the two games since the meeting, the results have improved. The Barnstormers struck out 12 times in 18 innings in their wins Tuesday and Wednesday. Not coincidentally, they racked up 28 hits during that time. Strikeouts usually aren’t that big of a deal, but in the Atlantic League – where defense is suspect – it’s important to put the ball in play.
The Barnstormers were 28-for-62 when they made contact the last two nights. That’s good for a .452 average. For the season, they’re hitting .333 when they don’t strike out.
Let’s go streaking:
If the Barnstormers win tonight, they’ll have their first three-game winning streak of the season. The team has won two in a row seven times.
Liberty Division-leading Camden, by contrast, has won at least six in a row on three occasions. The Riversharks are riding an eight-game streak right now and have pushed Southern Maryland five back in the standings.

This was a big start for Mattox. He earned his first win and proved his worthiness for a spot in the rotation. Mattox has two quality starts in nine games this season. Although his ERA is still elevated at 6.26, he has allowed just one earned run in his last 9 2/3 innings. So the trend is positive.
Notes:
*Judd Songster posted two more scoreless innings. The righthander hasn’t allowed a run in 11 2/3 innings and has lowered his ERA to 3.70, which is the lowest it has been all season.
*Lance Burkhart collected three hits as he was moved into the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Burkhart is hitting .338 this month and appears headed for another All-Star appearance.
*Over the last three games, the Barnstormers have collected 41 hits and are batting .366 as a team. They only have 15 strikeouts during that time. It’s as if someone has flipped a switch and all of the at-bats have gotten better at the same time.
The bottom line:
Finally, a three-game winning streak. The Barnstormers have quietly moved within 7.5 games of first place. One of the goals for the team was to build momentum heading into the second half. This is a step in that direction.

Thanks Jason. I enjoy your bloggy write-ups each day. I keep checking to see when the new post is ready, and it truly is a thrilling event when I see it’s been uploaded (I’m easily pleased). Your efforts are truly appreciated by many!
Kinda off the subject…
I have, on a few occasions, gone back to previous posts for whatever reason and I see pictures from previous years. The blue hats REALLY stick out nearly to the point of wondering “what were they thinking?”
The red hats are a nice touch and they seem to tie things together better than the blue hats.
However, picturing it in my mind a red batting helmet may be too much. I could be wrong however. Maybe we could have a trial period. Or just toss a spray can of Glossy Red Krylon to Matt LeCroy pre-game. He seems the type to give it a go.
After an abysmal month of May, the Barnstormers are close to playing .500 baseball this month. If they can pick up a big hitter, with the return of Bladergroen, there’s a lot to look forward the rest of this season.
The Barnstormers started wearing red caps at home at some point during last season. I can’t remember exactly when. They still wear the blue ones with their gray road uniforms. It was a good change.
I onlly wish the new hats were New Era ones. Boots used to wear a red batting helmet when he coached third. It definatly stood out. I think he is now wearing a navy blue one.
I agree the Barnstormers could contend if they added one more bat. The problem is they need a superstar — a guy who hits .320 with a .400 on-base and .550 slugging and can hit cleanup. Every decent Atlantic League team has at least two of those types of hitters (except maybe Somerset).
The Barnstormers have one if Bladergroen returns to early-season form. One of the reasons their offense is inconsistent is they don’t have that anchor in the middle who will hit no matter how well the opposing pitcher is throwing that day. So while the Barnstormers could conceivably be one piece from rising in the standings, it’s a big piece and it’s not easy to find.
Geez, I always hate when we play the Crabs. I’ll cheer for us until D goes in.. then it’s all up in the air. Howz the arm D.. maybe it’s too sore and you should sit out the series!!! J/K

I really feel things are changing with the team and I am starting to feel great about the second half.
Go out and play boys .. I’m melting butter for some CRAB !!!

I’m sorry to hear that Crazy. That’s never any fun.
Have you been down to SMD before and do you know how your going?
no and no. but dawn has directions. we are leaving a bit early in case we get lost. the directions look easy.
we can follow each other if you want.
We are going 83 to the beltway. Jerry said we are leaving around 10 do you want to follow us down
The Atlantic League Scoreboard thing is wrong I think. It says we are in the top of the 4th.
I did just hear Dave say it was the third, correct?
Nevermind, it’s all okay now. It may have been just me!
that’s how we were going so yes we’ll follow you down and back.
did dave just say they’re playing like the ‘06 team?
Yes he did!
wow!
nice job jutt!
I have no clue as to what Von said after that last loss but.. wirte it, record it, and listen to it every game. talk about a motivational speech!!!

Yes, 6-1
wow I am going to stop listening until later
Dave,
How many people are in attendance at the game? It doesn’t sound like a whole lot.

Let’s hope so stormguy!
Three in a row!!!!!!
stormguy708,
Use a different avatar please.
3 in a Row !!! Keep it up, the 2nd half of this season is going to go through the Amish City of Lancaster, PA.
Wow! Way to go guys!!!! Congrats on a great win!
I fixed it Jason, Sorry
three-game winning streak!
Talk about avatars biting the dust again. Victoria Secrets coming out with a U of M line. I guess that avatar won’t be appropriate either.
Gotta like that box score. 12 hits and no errors.
great job guys!
I guess avatarts are not allowed.
Glad to see the bullpen is back. Another impressive finish from the men of the pen. Nice game all the way around, fellas.
Looks like the second half will be more intriguing than the first.
Yeah!!!! Way to go Guys!!!!
So, I missed a great game… fell asleep,.
I missed the “AvaTarts” what were you boys using last night? Must been been great caused they got rid of all our lovely pictures
Nice job guys, I fell asleep listening to the game., nice job lance it is nice to see you hitting more. Jarred did that temper go tonight?? I could just see you getting upset over some of those calls.
GOOD LUCK on todays game guys.
A 3 game streak. Let’s go for 4. Wow, no more avatars. First quilts, then nothing. Next they will have spellcheck.
All due to someone not listening!!! I say just get rid of that person They spoiled if for everyone.
Personally, I’d rather have nothing than those crazy quilts. Mine looked liked bugs squished on a windshild!
Anybody going to the game tonight?
Too early – can’t spell – that should be windshield!
we’re going on sunday. when is thorpe pitching again?
way to go guys.. we are over that two game streak and one three let’s keep it going.
My picture is back !!!
Yes, the avatar god has been good to us. And look, no more quilts.
Yippee – no more quilts! However, I think we are going to see some split personalities emerging again.
Stormers08 – I don’t know when Thorp is pitching again. Hopefully, soon.
With the exception of Ramistella, Mattox did a very good job in stopping the Crabs better hitters; Johnston, Osborn, and Owens. Maybe popping Owens kept them off balance.
Ultimate,
I always thought your quilt looked like one of this ink blot tests.
those instead of this…sorry
True “Storm” – I think they give those ink blot tests to those with psychological problems. Maybe my avatar was trying to tell me something LOL
Sounds like I am putting people to sleep again. Whoops.
The crowd was 1,917.
Maybe you were right Ultimate. You were also the one that mentioned split personalities?!?!?!?!
Thanks Dave! I did finally hear you say that on the postgame report. It looks like you are going to have some company from Lancaster there on Sunday! I’m sure the numbers will go up for the weekend games, but the Lancaster fans will definitely bring it up some as well.
Hopefully we will be loud!!!
I will have my cow bell.
hey crazy, that’s cool!!!
What a great game last night. Way to go Stormers.
Have a great time at the game bloggers. That area of Md. is nice. I go there often to largemouth bass fish and usually stay in at a hotel in Waldorf.
There’s a great seafood restaurant just south and outside of Waldorf call Captain Billy’s. Used to be an all you could eat seafood restaurant. You could pick from one to three different seafoods and have at it… clams, crab or crab legs, and shrimp for the big boy. It’s no longer like that, but the food is still delicious.
Lance is on one of his tear ‘em up streaks that he can get into. That boy’s on fire.
13 hits and no errors again. Now that’s what I’m talking about! 4 strike outs from the BP and no runs – That’s a perfect job from ‘the boys in the corner’.
Let’s go Stormers!
dadTB
Does 1490 reach the Jersey shore?? J/K
I surely don’t want to take the laptop on the beach.
Everyone take your cowbells.. you know how the home fans love it when we show up.. LOL
Should since you will be on the computer
