This is when the schedule starts to turn in the Barnstormers’ favor. The team has already played 33 games away from Clipper Magazine Stadium. That means 47 of the final 84 – or 56 percent – will be at home.
Although the Barnstormers shook off their road woes during their trip to Long Island and Southern Maryland last week, it’s still nice to have this edge. The Atlantic League schedule isn’t balanced. Lancaster plays 38 home games in the second half – including all 10 against Newark.
The home cooking starts with a four-game series against Camden, which has the league’s best record at 33-22. The Riversharks are an example of the change is good philosophy.
First-year head of baseball operations Dave Keller only brought back two players – C Randy McGarvey and OF L.J. Biernbaum — from last year’s playoff team. Keller even parted ways with Dwight Maness, the team’s popular center fielder and a seven-year Atlantic League veteran.
The result? Camden has challenged Newark as the best offense around. The Riversharks are second in batting average, second in runs scored and have the second fewest strikeouts. Newcomers Nic Jackson and Josh Rabe have emerged as elite hitters at this level.
The Barnstormers are the only team that has a winning record against the Riversharks. Lancaster won both series between these rivals – one at home and one on the road. The rest of the Liberty Division is hoping that trend continues. Otherwise, Camden is going to cruise to a first-half division title for the second year in a row.
Playing in Lancaster:
Former Barnstormer Derrick DePriest is still fond of playing at the Clip, even though he’s now a member of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
“We need to have a video of how Lancaster fans are and have our fans watch it,” DePriest said. “It’s just the sheer numbers in Lancaster. They exceed the numbers here. The word is still getting out. The fans that come here are great.
“We’re striving to have, from a fan base, the support of a Lancaster. They kind of set the bar for the last few years. They did it really quick.”
There has been some discussion about SoMd’s modest attendance through the first two months and how it compares to Lancaster and York. It’s important to note that Lancaster is a rare market. To expect every expansion city to match the enthusiasm here simply isn’t realistic. There’s more on the challenges the Blue Crabs face in building a fan base in today’s New Era.
Nichols returns:
Kyle Nichols will be back at the Clip after his not-so-memorable 15-game stint with the Barnstormers. Nichols is hitting .286 in six games since joining the Riversharks last week. The 1B/DH has mysteriously lost his power stroke. He has one home run since May 8, span of 141 at-bats.

Box score:
RECORD: 25-32
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Josh Hall
| 7 IP | 6 H | 2 R | 2 ER | 0 BB | 1 K |
Hall’s best asset is his control. He has only issued 12 walks in 41 2/3 innings since joining the Barnstormers. This was an impressive performance. The only runs Hall allowed came on home runs by former Stormer Kyle Nichols. One was a monster shot to left. One was a cheapie off the picnic tent. Hall is 3-0 with a 4.75 ERA. The team is 7-0 when he pitches.
“I just feel like I’ve gotten comfortable mechanically and with my stuff on the mound,” Hall said. “I just feel good. I enjoy going out there and just pitching. Before I got here, things weren’t that good around me. Things weren’t that good in my head. I just settled down. I just eased myself and pitched.”
The pitchers:
*Ryan Cullen worked a scoreless eighth. He retired Nic Jackson and L.J. Biernbaum – two very good lefty hitters – with the go-ahead run at second base in the eighth inning.
*Jose Cabrera allowed two hits and just his second earned run in the ninth. He struck out Gabe Suarez with runners at first and third to end it. The closer is now 6-for-7 in save chances.
“With his stuff, he might struggle through a couple of hitters, but eventually he’s going to get to the guy that he wants and he should be able to get him out,” manager Von Hayes said. “… This was the first night when it looked like he kind of got himself in a little trouble. But he reaches back and gets it done.”
*There were scouts in attendance Monday night. They were likely looking at Lancaster’s pitching and they saw some strong performances. Hall, Cullen and Cabrera could all help an organization.
The hitters:
*Jutt Hileman is a different hitter at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The outfielder delivered a pair of doubles, including one that gave the Barnstormers a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Hileman is hitting .329 at home and .190 on the road.
*Ivanon Coffie connected for his second home run. The solo shot in the seventh gave the Barnstormers a valuable insurance run.
*Manny Mejia has homered in back-to-back games. He has four total.
*Juan Francia left after the first inning with a strained hamstring. He’s out a minimum of 10 days and is likely headed to the disabled list.
*Camden OF Josh Rabe has retired. That’s a big blow to the Riversharks. The former big leaguer was hitting .361 with six homers and 30 RBIs in 44 games.
*Rabe’s departure assures more playing time for Kyle Nichols. Nichols was in a lengthy home run drought entering Monday night. That’s over. This power display was enough to drive the Barnstormers bonkers. Nichols was released by Lancaster on June 14. He batted .189 with no homers in 15 games for the local team.
The bottom line:
The Barnstormers still have the Riversharks’ number and they’re still on a hot streak. Lancaster is 5-2 against Camden and has won seven of its last nine overall. This one was fun to watch. You don’t see too many well-pitched, crisply-played games at the Clip. The Barnstormers are within seven games of .500 for the first time since May 19.
“Things have been going pretty well,” Hall said. “We’ve been playing better, which is good. We’ve got a good team here. I know our record doesn’t really show it, but we’ve been playing a lot better lately.”

This just in…
LHP Sean Thompson for Camden tonight.
I am kinda new at this Barnstomin sight, but I really do enjoy reading all of your comments. I was wondering when you put those good pictures of players up here on this sight, is there anyway you could put a name with it?? I don’t know any of the players and it would be nice to have a name with the face, also what is that pregame baseball on this sight about? I click on it but nothing happens. My son plays for the the Barnstomers and we are making a trip out there next week, hope to see all of you at the games.
Deb, welcome Mother of a Barnstormer! (that doesn’t sound as good once it’s typed out…)
Usually, if you hover your mouse over the picture there is a caption that pops up showing the name of the player.
I think the Pregame baseball is just a picture, it’s not a link. It’s just telling you that Jason posted this section “pregame”.
Hope you have a safe trip for your Lancaster visit!
You learn somthing new every day! Thanks djspleen – I had no idea about the mouse hovering trick on the pictures and I think I’ve been on this blog since day 1. I’ve never been able to master the darn avatar though!
Welcome Deb! Have a safe trip to Lancaster when you make your way here!
Ultimate, it is a good thing you learn something new every day. Otherwise, life would get quite boring, wouldn’t it?
Good luck to the team tonight! I am glad they are back home! I will enjoy sitting there watching them take on those Riversharks…let’s hope the storms stay away from the Clip, at least the ones that bring the rain. The guys can continue their storming tonight!
UBF, no prob. Sometimes it takes a newbie to help us see something new(bie).
Here is how I got my avatar to work:
1) Follow the link “Blog at WordPress.com” on the bottom of this page.
2) Sign in (you may need to create your account, but you should be able to use your barnstormin’ name and just create a password to use with it.)
3) Go to PROFILE and you should see something about uploading MY PICTURE to use for an avatar.
4) Once that’s done you’ll need to login to WordPress so that Barnstormin’ knows what your avatar is.
That’s pretty general, but the help at wordpress should hopefully be clearer.
Speaking of Mothers of Barnstormers, has basemom been on the DL w/ her son or something?
I don’t think I’ve seen many posts from her since her visit.
Maybe after she met us Lancasteronians she realized she didn’t want to chat w/ us anymore. HA…just kidding of course…unless it’s true
DJ,
I wondered the same thing about basemom. I don’t think it has to do with us though..or I hope not. Afterall, didn’t Jason just put it in words above (and verified by Derrick) that Lancaster has the best fans?!?!?!?!
“best fans” may mean something different than “fans with whom you’d like to blog”
Just a thought.
But you’re right, how could someone NOT love us??
When does the second half start?
PS. Sorry, I was lost at sea. Thank god for mermaids!
Mr b.
Okay… I got every step covered but this one. I’m not sure what this means since I am already a member here under dadTB. I had to register under dadtb, because it would not accept capital letters. So, I did that… dadtb.
I then uploaded a picture and it was accepted.
“4) Once that’s done you’ll need to login to WordPress so that Barnstormin’ knows what your avatar is.”
I did that and my avatar is still not showing here.
I must admit that I am avatar illiterate.
dadTB
each half Is 70 games
Okay… My avatar is now showing under the dadtb rather than the dadTB… Cool!
Thanks for the help. I guess being dadtb is just as good. LOL!
Second half begins on July 8, which is actually the week before the All-Star break.
It is going to fun seeing all of the new avatars showing up now!
Perhaps an avatar-monster has been created
lol….and the mastermind is the one with the big eye? j/k
FOLLOW THE EYE!!!
dadTB, go back to wordpress, click on my account in the upper left corner, click on edit profile, and scroll down th nicknames. Enter dadTB and you should be OK.
Make sure your nickname dadTB apperars in display publicly.
Eye Eye Captain!
Thanks M & B… Now let’s see if this works.
UGGGHHHHHH!
There is only 1 avatar monster. That is Rad. But she has calmed down so far and only using 1 or 2. She used to change it every day.
It looks like a good night for a win.
Here ya go. Yahoo!
You definitely have created a Blogenstein! It’s ALIVE!
That did not sound encouraging, dadTB.
It is good to see Mr B back. I can now call off the dogs. Now we need to see Mark and Play to Win back and it will be like old times.
Did you click update profile in the lower left corner.
Good to see your finally operational, dadTB
it won’t let me use my nickname for a avatar
Dang thing says my nick is already taken…and won’t let me sign in tho.
says I have an invalid user name hehe …just gonna forget it.
When you say nickname, are you referring to your user id?
If so, you may have forgotten a previous password.
good luck with that avatar, I tried and no go .
Maybe we could all meet with Jason in one of the skyboxes before a game for a Bloggin 101 class
Thank you djsleen, I will try your instructions tomorrow and hopefully I will have an avatar! I’m going to the game tonight!
Hey Stormin’ – you forgot about me. I’ve been busy lately, but I’m still around.
Oh wish I was still there in Lancaster, you were all wonderful…truth is I was kind of down with a bad summer cold once I got back to NM…I enjoyed your city so much and the fans ARE THE BEST…anyway I haven’t had much chance to listen to the games since I came home and will resume once life gets back on track. just walked into the office at work to check how the game was and read the posts. To the other Barnstormer mom, you are going to have a wonderful time!
Hi Basemom.. How ya been and Welcome Deb
I’m on vacation and still can’t stay away from the blog.
Having a blast at the Jersey shore.. Out boating all day and tonight I broke down… I bought Crab legs.. dadtb you would be proud of me. I don’t know what to do with them but I’m giving them a try. Heck, anything with a few pounds of melted butter can’t be bad … right?
Whats going on at the Clipp? are we playin.. are we winning???
WOW.. that was fast. Thought I would change the picture for y’all and within seconds .. Whamoo. it’s done
Ultimate.. call me and I’ll walk you through it.. I learned from the master.. Stormin
ALRIGHT Manny.. Kelly, ring that bell !!!
Great job Jarred..
Congrats Stormers..
Basemom, sorry to hear you were feeling under the weather. I’m glad the Lancaster fans didn’t scare you away.
Rad, so what was the final verdict on the crab legs? Except, you should have been eating them earlier in the weekend when we had our little crab feast.
Congrats to the team! The rain storms held off, but we continued our storm! Way to go!
It sure looked like Kyle Nichols had an axe to grind though. Let’s hope it’s been ground now and he has cooled off after tonight.
Great Game Guys. Well Played. Hall was magnificent. You have GOT to be kidding me! Kyle Nichols 4-4 with 2 Dingers?? Where did that come from??
5-3 Final for those that didn’t know
Way to go Guys, great job!!!
Basemom 7, I hope you are feeling better and it was a pleasure to meet ya when you were in Lancaster.
Geez Jason, you brought the good news and the bad news in the post game “stuff.” Hall did do a great job tonight! It was also wonderful to see Jutt make some good hits.
That’s not good news about Juan. I hope he has a speedy recovery.
Got to listen to the game tonight. Great game, little too suspenseful at the end..but nice run you guys are on.
Jason, as always, thanks for the extra info.
btw…nice one barney (post #22)
Let’s see if this picture thing works
Great win guys, let’s keep it going!
Finally! Something better then a Yankees logo!
true storm, thanks from juan for wishing him a speedy recovery. i’ll keep you posted. we’ll know more tomorrow.
I hope juan is Ok.
A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO LANCE.
Nice job guys.
Hey Stormers08-Hope Juan is back soon!!!
Ha Ha Barney.. remember I am just a temporary Yanks fan.
True Storm.. I ate the legs but would have enjoyed a nice steak cooked over an open flame, medium rare, sauted mushrooms…NICE!!!
What did I miss? What happened to Juan?
he has a strained hamstring I think.
Hey all right look It is lance dog’s photo. Thanks for the step by step instructions on how to do that.
I hope this avatar is Ok.
Good work Crazy… I’m sure Lance will love the pic.
Sorry about the hamstring injury to Juan.
Sorry about that PTBNL. I thought you were traded.
Great game last night. It is hard to believe that Nichols can hit HR’s. Sure did’nt do them as a Stormer. Hey it’s Baseball Bingo tonight.
I feel another win.
I figure with Cullen at a 1.69 ERA and Cabrera at about the same, they should get some serious looks.
(comment #28) Mark has been missing too? I guess I don’t feel so guilty anymore.
I kind of got burned out on the Stormers for a few weeks. Following the Celts and interleague play held most of my attention. Losing my Adderol didn’t help either.
Juan didn’t just do a Gochenauer’s Appliance commercial that we don’t know about did he? (The Gochenauer Curse)
Juan is a tough player and extremely spirited. Hopefully, he’ll rebound quickly and be back in the line up soon. He had been doing so well offensively, too.
The boys are probably still quite tired from the road trip. When an athlete is tired and extends themselves physically, injuries can and do occur.
So get better, Juan!
Good game last night guys. I was listening to Dave on WLPA 1490 am. What an exciting second half!
Hey, what’s up with Kyle Nichols!? The man comes back to the Clipp and just destroys it. Where was this Kyle when he was a Barnstormer?
Reminds me of the 1991 movie ‘Hook’ with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. The little boy pulled adult Peter Pan’s face back and the wrinkles disappeared. Then the little boy says to Peter in a loving tone, “Oh, there you are Peter.”
That’s what it felt like last night… “Oh, there you are Kyle!”
You knew he had it in him, but…
Rad… How were the crab legs? momJB just loves crab legs to the max! If we go out for seafood, I know one item that wil be on her plate.
Okay Boys, let’s do it again tonight.
Let’s go Stormers!
dadTB
Kyle Nichols did not have an ‘axe to grind’ even though he tried his best at Lancaster, PA and was unceremonously dumped. He still holds the record for homeruns in the California League with the Lancaster, CA JetHawks.
Good luck to the Barnstomers this year.
Response to #67 –
Didn’t see anyone here say that Kyle had an ‘axe to grind’ with the Barnstormers.
Apparently, the Barnstormers liked Kyle and gave him a shot at the 1st base position after Southern Maryland let him go. He didn’t perform well here and that’s a fact.
With Ian Bladergroen likely to be returning in and around the All Star break, Kyle would have been in a platooning role anyway, if the Barnstormers decided to keep him on the roster. We also have a much younger 24 year old Dave Adamchick (C/1B) to consider.
It was good for him to move on and play with Camden where they needed someone who could bat better than their current first baseman, Brett Bonvechio, at a 227 avg. His position there is most likely more stable than it would have been here in Lancaster.
Kyle may have found a home in Camden after being traded twice in the first half of the season. That in itself must be hard on an athlete no matter who they are.
dadTB
“axe to grind” Please read post 46
