Tim McClaskey’s playing career is over. The righthander, who has been on the disabled list since June 6, is leaving the team and will pursue a career in coaching.
“He’s going to get on with his life,” manager Von Hayes said. “He’s got a condition that doesn’t allow him to play baseball. He’s fine with it. He’s going to make a heck of a coach. I think that’s what he wants to do now. He’s a great kid and we wish him the best.”
McClaskey suffers from an autoimmune disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The illness forced him to miss three months while at Double-A Reading last season. The symptoms re-emerged during his final start on June 5 and he was unable to return.
In six games with the Barnstormers, McClaskey was 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA. He played professionally for 13 seasons, advancing as high as Triple-A in 2002 and 2005.
No Hake:
Travis Hake will not be signing with the Barnstormers after all. The infielder, who was out of professional baseball when the team called earlier this week, was offered a contract but has decided not to play.
Drese signed:
Camden starter Ryan Drese was picked up by the Pirates and assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Riversharks added Kevin Mannix, who was with the Ducks earlier this season, to make an emergency start. Riversharks C Jason Phillips was signed by the Braves and assigned to Triple-A Richmond on Wednesday.
Herr added:
The Barnstormers have signed OF Jordan Herr. The former Hempfield standout opted to forego his final two years of eligibility at Division I Pittsburgh and turn pro. Herr batted .275 with five homers and 32 RBIs in 51 games at Pitt. He was drafted by the Cubs in the 41st round in 2007, but chose to return to college. He was not drafted earlier this month.

Youman showed improved command after a five-walk performance at Southern Maryland on Saturday. If he keeps throwing strikes, he’ll be dominant at this level. He has an 88-89 mph fastball and a nasty slider. The ball is tough to pick up out of his hand. Youman, Josh Hall, Eric Ackerman and Nick Renault represent a pretty good 1-through-4. This team can pitch.
“I was able to go out there and throw my fastball for strikes,” Youman said. “The biggest part of pitching, for me personally, is fastball command. If I’m able to command my fastball, things will work out for me.”
One informed observer said Youman was among the best left-handers in the league at the moment – based solely on today’s performance.
The pitchers:
*Pat Cassa survived an eventful seventh inning. He surrendered three hits, but escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam. The lefty threw two scoreless. Camden has a terrific lineup, but it’s vulnerable to left-handed pitching. Cassa and Youman shut down the Sharks.
*Judd Songster extended his scoreless streak to 14 1/3 innings. His ERA is down to 3.33.
*It was the Barnstormers’ second shutout at home. Both have come against Camden.
The hitters:
*Ivanon Coffie looks like a good fit for the Clip. He’s 10-for-33 with an on-base percentage around .450 in 10 games here. Three of his four homers have come at home.
*Matt LeCroy homered again. This was a great sign. After his strong performance Wednesday night, he returned to the lineup for a day game and showed no sign of injury.
“My shoulder is starting to feel a lot better,” LeCroy said. “… You hate to take all that time off and get in the game right away. It’s starting to feel pretty good. I’ve put the work in. Hopefully, I can make the best of the pitchers’ mistakes.”
*Kevin Kotch went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his Lancaster debut. Kotch batted .150 in limited playing time at York. The catcher is the 41st player used by the team this season.
*OF Jordan Herr was signed during the game and will be activated in time for Friday night’s game at Bridgeport. Herr’s arrival should help the defense. He was a CF in college and will allow the team to use Greg Blosser as the DH.
The bottom line:
This was a good day for the Barnstormers beyond the final score. Youman was in control and LeCroy showed some more power. Those are two really encouraging signs going forward. The team split a four-game series with Camden and very easily could have won three of four. The long-awaited second half is only 10 games away.

Tim, good luck in your post-player life.
Jason- How many position players do we have left on the bench right now? I’ve lost count with the craziness of the past few days. It can’t be many.
One. Right now.
I turned the game on just in time to hear the scoring run.. way to start a game, now let’s keep it going!
That’s what I was thinking, but that sounded impossible. Thanks.
Homer For Java..
Hi Tim.. Good luck in your future endeavors..
Good luck Tim. We wish you the best.
Interesting signing of Herr. I hope he doesn’t crash and burn in the AL. I kid of his caliber may have been better off getting some experience in the Frontier or Northern League.
I hope he fits in.
I would assume/hope most of us here would agree with your 2nd and 4th sentence, southern.
Good Luck Tim…Best Wishes for your future with coaching and your health !!!

Best of luck Tim, gonna miss ya!
Way to go guys..Let’s take the winnin’ on the road!!!
Matt, today, I think he played his best game. I hope he can stay consistent. He does not have to hit a homer every night, just get on base.
Today was a must win and we did it. Great job by Shane as well as the bullpen.
I suppose I will be blasted, but here goes….
I can’t believe some of the negative comments on this blog.
I know we are supposed to say what is on our minds, and this is a free country, but..
Alot of players read this and how you any of us feel if we were truly trying our best and still was blasted.
As for the management not getting enough players, if anyone could have predicted seven on the DL at one time, you belong in the dugout not in the stands.
I think it is a huge feather in the cap of the management that so far four of our players have been signed.
To the best of my knowledge we lead the league in that catagory.
They have not had a day off since I think May 16th and there is no one to give them a breather. Everytime we get someone to fit into that mold, someone gets signed, or hurt.
I think it is time to stand tall behind the team and cheer them on.
Everyone has bad days, even us, and everyone gets tired at their jobs, even us.
So lets be positive what do you say?
I for one think we can win the second half, how about you?….
Well put Tom!!!! I agree 100%
Is there a typo in the box score? There is a Ball listed for us as a catcher (between Coffie and Kotch). If not a typo, is this someone else we added?
It’s an error. Kotch took Jarred Ball’s No. 24, which probably caused the glitch.
100 percent agree with you Tom. Negativity on here is pretty incredible…no matter if we win or lose! It just shouldn’t be a place to bash management, players, cylo, the front office or whomever.
I also second Tom,well said..
Awsome day at the Clip.Weather was perfect,no errors, and a strong performance from Shane Youman.
Nicely said Tom!!!
Bigjeff poo pooed me for being Rah Rah ..
I know the team reads this and will support them through thick and thin, For richer and for poorer.
If people want slam the team head to the Brickyard to air your complaints , HAH !!!
Let’s scan through some recent comments:
*Awesome day at the Clip
*I think (Matt) played his best game.
*Great job today guys!
*Congrats Jarred…I will cherish your jersey FOREVER!!!
Five people wished Tim McClaskey good luck in his future endeavors.
Yeah, the negativity is really out of control here. I’m placing a moratorium on comments about what other fans are saying. Talk about the baseball as much as you wish. Encourage the players. Gripe about them not performing. Whatever. Just don’t talk about other fans. It only discourages them from participating and drags the site down. My employers look at this site and they expect me to keep it civil. Thanks.
Noting on the positive side……..Woods and Hileman have not been flashy over the last 2 games that I watched, but they played some really solid defense. They chased down everything they could. I enjoyed their efforts the last 2 games.
And my hat off to Gonzalez…he made some really nice plays at short again today…….I just get frustrated with him when he looks like he is not running out “sure outs.” That I dont understand from someone who wants to get back to affliated ball.
The pitching was outstanding again today. Nice job
In response to Tom’s comment #37 ” for one think we can win the second half, how about you?….
As for me, I believe we can win too.
And to I M Fun…..I do appreciate your additions to the entertainment of the game. My daughter and I went to a Harrisburg Senator game on Sunday. The entertainment level between innings between the two teams are miles apart. The Senators have no real leader who has any consistency of presentation throughout the game.
I go to the games for the baseball but am amused by most of your attempts to entertain the crowd. Thank you.
On the other hand, I could do without the kids screaming in my ear because they want to win the Pizza Hut pizza that you are giving away each night. Could you think of something new for that giveaway???
Hey for any one that was not at the game. The team had 6 hits and all of them were extra base hits including two triples.
Go Stormers!!!
Tim good luck in whatever you do. You are good person keep staying in the game of baseball it needs you.
Lance has surgery on Monday and I wish him good luck.He told me it is just a break and he will be fine.
I did not see the entire game but from what I saw the new catcher was doing his job.
Sorry, I’m guilty for having a tendency to rip on both players and fellow bloggers. It’s because I’m insecure and it makes me feel better when I put down other people.
As for it not being right that players can see negative comments on this blog, maybe we should also remove the sports sections from newspapers?
I have a tendency to say things I should not. I just do not like it when people put the team down or the players with out knowing the facts.
Now that we won yesterday lets do it agian on the road.
GOOD LUCK GUYS!!
Matt how was your sandwich???
You are correct Jason. The purpose of the blog is to talk about barnstormer’s baseball and not other people.
I agree that everyone has a bad day now and then. I also agree that we do have freedom to express our opinions. I also understand that the players may read this. Just like any job everyone has a boss. At time the boss gives out constructive feedback. We as the employee use that feedback in anyway we want to take it. I think any player reading these comments (negative or positive) know that it is just an opinion given by an observer. He may see that the negative comment has some validity. He then tries to correct it. They as player also know we are not there boss/ manager and can take it as a grain of salt.
I am a very balance with my positive and negative comments. It is no surprise I am not a Leroy fan yet, but he had an outstanding day yesterday. He keeps it up I will be a believer.
