Of all the players to ever wear the Barnstormers uniform, none has generated more interest outside of Lancaster County than Yamel Guevara. The former Cuban phenom remains a curiosity for all of those who saw him at his peak.
Every week or so, someone who watched Guevara in the past will send an email my way to ask about him. How did he end up in Lancaster? What kind of velocity is he showing? Is he still that phenom? The righthander has even been featured in The Sporting News.
Guevara is not the fireballing superstar he was when he went 10-0 with a 2.06 ERA in the Cuban National Series. The 94 mph fastball he once displayed is now clocked in the 88-90 range. He doesn’t have great command with it. Since his debut with the Barnstormers on May 11, he has relied heavily on his slider – particularly against right-handed batters.
Even though Guevara’s stuff has taken a dip from his early-20s prime, he has proven an effective pitcher at this level. He is one of the few Atlantic Leaguers to average more than a strikeout per inning and opponents are hitting just .217 against him. The pitcher’s problem has been control – he’s averaging 7.5 walks per nine.
Guevara is making his third start today. If Jason Scobie arrives and fills out that fifth slot in the rotation – as expected – Guevara will head back to the bullpen where the team believes he can be more of a weapon. Regardless of his role, people will always keep an eye on him here because they remember him as a Cuban legend.
Independence Day:
July 4 is a significant date in Barnstormers history. It was the date – back in 2005 – when the team traded Norm Hutchins to Newark in exchange for Jeremy Todd. Without that deal, you could make a strong case that the Barnstormers never win their championship the following year.
Quotable:
“I know we’ve had a lot of injuries,” said pitcher Josh Hall said after his eight shutout innings Thursday. “But I’ve always said we’ve got a good team if we play together and get our act together.”
Perry promoted:
OF Jason Perry, who was with the Barnstormers in spring training, has been promoted to the big leagues by the Braves. Perry was signed by the Braves on April 18 and assigned to Double-A Mississippi. He batted .309 with 18 homers and 55 RBIs in 69 games at Mississippi and Triple-A Richmond before getting the call. This will be his first crack at the majors.

Box score:
RECORD: 30-38
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Danny Gonzalez
It’s hard to pick one in a game of this nature. Gonzalez’s three-run homer in the sixth got the Barnstormers off the mat and made the deficit more reasonable. It was his ninth of the season.
Notable:
*The Barnstormers rallied from an 8-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. They improved to 6-2 against the Revolution and clinched a share of third place in the first half.
*What can you say about Kevin Kotch? While his energy and enthusiasm have been a boost for the team, his results have been even better. Kotch belted his third home run in nine games as a member of the Barnstormers. It was a two-run shot that pulled the team even in the bottom of the eighth.
*Joe Evans made his professional debut and delivered an RBI double. The newly-acquired infielder replaced Juan Francia as a pinch-runner.
*D.J. Mattox made his first appearance since June 24, which was the game where he failed to get an out. The righthander posted 2 1/3 shutout innings.
*Judd Songster extended his streak without an earned run to 21 2/3 innings.

The Guevara piece in The Sporting News is great stuff. It is fitting that he is pitching on July 4.
Congratulations to Jason Perry…knock em dead in the big leagues!!
Happy 4th of July everyone, thanks again to all the Vets for protecting our freedom.
Hey Rad… Why are you at home? You should have been with us standing in the packed mezzanine section of Section 8. The concession stand was making a killing.
Mom and I had enough waiting, standing, and smelling vinegar from the condiment stand that we packed it up early and headed home before the colossus 4th of July crowd made a mass exit for the gates.
We had been at the Brickyard cashing in on some of those ‘Barnstormer 7 Run Free Wings!’ Hmmmmm… and a couple of our favorite liquid refreshments to go along with them before the game. They were simply scrumptious. I had the Chesapeake style with the old bay seasoning and spices. I most likely will pay the price when I try to go to sleep later tonight.
The game was in delay when we left and there seemed no end in sight. This is a slow moving front that appears to be hanging over us. We need this rain here since all the t-storms just pass us by over the pass three weeks.
I ran across a Revolution home town fan at the Brickyard and immediately reminded her that we were leading the War of the Roses by a 5 to 2 margin.
Hopefully they’ll get the fireworks in tonight. There was a ton of kids there. I feel bad for them.
Let’s Go Stormers!
dadTB
We didn’t have much to cheer about this first half of the season, but that is a simple joy that we have been give.

Happy 4th DJ and basemom7!!!

Way to go guys and Jutt!!!
Awesome job Kevin
Can’t wait to see ya guys in a couple hours
YOU TOO DOPEY…HAVE A SAFE WEEKEND, WAY TO GO ALL YOU GUYS WAY TO BATTLE!
It was a consensus that the guys were just waiting until the jersey auction was over to score their runs! They wanted the diehard fans to be able to see them win! That was a great ending, even if it was well past midnight!
Also, you gotta love the cowbell! Fun managed to rope in some crazy fans to go out there in the rain with him!
The one thing I wasn’t sure of though, was why did they pull Manny in the last inning to put in Coffie? Jason can you help? The group of us sitting together had our theories, but any clarification would be appreciated.
Thank goodness these guys go on the road. I need a nap.
True storm- I would assume that Von thought Coffie was a better bunter. That didn’t work out so well for us tonight.
True Storm – The percentage play was to bunt. My guess is that Manny is not a very good bunter and that’s why the switch was made (same analysis as deuce)
Can we arrange rain delays or 13 inning games for the 2nd half of the season? Record is 2 – 0 in games that finish after midnight! For those of us there to the end, great job! I was in back of section 15 (where York fans were sitting) and they couldn’t believe how loud we were.
Funny observation of the game …. York had fans sitting next to their dugout. There was 1 gentleman who would lead them in the “1-2-3 hit the wall” cheer. After Kotch tied the game, one of our fans went down, tapped him on the shoulder and did a Lancaster “1 -2 – 3 hit the wall” cheer. They both had a good laugh about it.
Side note … Had a chance to talk to a lot of York fans during the delay and the game and it was fun. It’s great to have a fun rivalry where nobody feels they are in danger cheering for their team. Remember I’m a Phiilies fan and have seen quite a few ugly incidents at Phils – Mets games. Last time I went to Shea (about 10 years ago) I didn’t think I would make it home alive. Let’s show York the same respect at their stadium this weekend! Good Luck!
Pack – Be sure to read the posts from the last few days. I guess you headed over to the Australian and Hawaiian internationals, and did battle with some humongous waves. After all “Danger is your business!” I hope you and Mick had fun when you winged on over to London to jam with the Stones! Like it or not you have become as famous as our hero Jeff Spicoli. Hope to see you Friday night at the ballpark!
Wait a minute .. Stormers Won?? I went to bed at 0-7. Next time your planning a rally could you please call me. Long day had me exhausted and I couldn’t hold up.
Kevin ( JerseyBoy ) is a nice addition to the team. Haven’t met Joe yet but… welcome!
DJ, Judd.. congrats, and Danny… thanks!!!!
CONGRATULATONS to the whole team… great job !!!
Ultimate you going to Ddoorrk this weekend?
Rad and Stormin:
I will be Stormin’ in York tonight. (99% sure I will make it there anyway)
I’m thinking of a trip over there but not quite up to getting in the car again… yet. I’ll text you if I get the urge!
The trip yesterday wore me out but it was nice to get on the beach for a few hours
Hey Barney we can keep the peace with the York fans, but If years down the road we meet In the playoffs. the gloves are off ….lol
Way to go Stormers..we lead 6-2 Community cup standings lets keep It right here. where It belongs
Great job guys!!! Awesome win!!
Deuce and Barney,
Thanks! That’s what I had thought, but I just wanted to make sure my assumptions were correct. You know what they say about people who assume.
True Storm- I know what you mean by making assumptions. I got caught assumimg the games on Tuesday and Friday would get over at reasonable hour. LOL
