The Barnstormers will start the second half with two new faces. One is P Jason Scobie, whose addition was reported last week. The other is OF Luis Perez. Both will be signed and with the club in Bridgeport, pending physicals.
Perez is a six-year pro who spent the first five seasons of his career in the A’s system. He started this year with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the independent American Association before being released last week. Von Hayes, who never managed Perez, is familiar with the outfielder from his days with the A’s.
“I remember he’s the type of hitter who uses all fields,” Hayes said. “He has some power, not raw power, but certainly enough to reach our right-field porch. More important, he’s an RBI guy we’re looking to fill the fifth or sixth spot. We hope he can give us a shot in the arm.”
The Barnstormers desperately need a boost in outfield production. Between Jutt Hileman, Jarred Ball and the recently-added Jordan Herr, this team has given more than 400 at-bats to outfielders who have provided an on-base percentage below .300. That’s not going to work.
Perez – who missed all of 2007 because of injury – batted .280 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 43 games with Lincoln. His on-base was .328 and his slugging was .439. Based on those numbers, this doesn’t look like a huge upgrade. It’s worth noting that Perez was a lifetime .301 hitter in affiliated ball, although he never advanced above High-A. He doesn’t strike out too often, which is a good fit for this roster.
The Barnstormers have to improve their lineup. The batting order they employed during the weekend games in York is not acceptable by Atlantic League standards. It included only two hitters – Matt LeCroy and Lloyd Turner – who have played at Double-A or higher in the last three years. It included three guys – Herr, Kevin Kotch and Joe Evans – who have never played above rookie ball.
It’s fine for the Barnstormers to gamble on Herr, a young athlete with a big-league pedigree. It’s OK to roll the dice on Kotch, an energetic, left-handed hitting catcher with obvious talent. It’s even somewhat defensible to bring back Atlantic League veterans, such as Hileman, Lance Burkhart and Danny Gonzalez, year after year.
But if you’re going to follow that route, you better have some big-time bats to complement them – like the team had at the beginning of the season. Otherwise, the offense is going to sputter and the team is going to look like the JV competing against the varsity when it plays a powerhouse like Somerset. We’ve seen this show two years running.
The next few weeks are a test for the Barnstormers, who clearly have the worst position player talent in the league. They need to make significant upgrades or they need to acknowledge that what they’re putting on the field is not a Double-A quality product.
LINEUP HOLES:
To his credit, Hayes has openly admitted the team’s shortcomings. When asked if the Barnstormers could win the second half title, he offered this candid response:
“No, not the way the team is right now. I don’t believe we can. If you ask me in a week from now, we might have three new players and I’ll say, ‘Absolutely.’ I hope I can be able to say that in a week or so from now.”
The Barnstormers have encountered more problems than any team should have to endure. They’ve lost five players to affiliated ball and have put eight players on the disabled list. Atlantic League teams need to overcome these issues to some degree. They need to find answers.
The turnover and lack of position player talent has become frustrating for everyone involved.
“When you’re scuffling and you’re losing players and you know in your heart that particular day — because you lost players you’re not going to be competitive — that’s the hard part,” Hayes said.
Hayes sees one glaring need: a starting catcher. The Barnstormers gave Kotch, who was a third-stringer at York before being traded to Lancaster, the bulk of the starts last week. Manny Mejia, the presumed starter with Burkhart injured, has struggled defensively.
The hope is that once the Barnstormers get everyone healthy, including 1B Ian Bladergroen, they can field a lineup that looks something like this …
-
Mike Woods, lf
Lloyd Turner/Juan Francia, 2b
Danny Gonzalez, ss
Matt LeCroy, dh
Ian Bladergroen, 1b
Luis Perez, rf
Manny Mejia, c
Turner/ Ivanon Coffie, 3b
Jutt Hileman, cf
Although it’s still not top-notch, that looks a lot better than the lineup that saw the field Sunday. It also creates some versatility with Herr and Kotch on the bench, rotating in to give players days off. The Barnstormers haven’t been able to give their starters a rest and that also results in slumps.
PITCHING IN:
Ultimately, the Barnstormers’ second-half fate will be determined by their pitchers. This team likely won’t rank in the top half of the league in offense, so it’s going to need to pitch well to succeed. When the Barnstormers had their only decent winning stretch – four in a row and nine out of 13 – it coincided with the team’s best display of starting pitching.
Josh Hall and Eric Ackerman are a decent 1-2 at the top. Hall has shown flashes of dominance and has the rotation’s best ERA at 4.28. Ackerman’s stats took a hit when he was knocked around in his last outing, but he’s a worthy All-Star with a solid K/BB ratio and WHIP.
The key will be the other three spots. Shane Youman looks like he has the stuff to dominate, if he can just put it together consistently. Nick Renault has ridden a roller coaster and his last two starts have been a struggle. It’s impossible to know what to expect out of him going forward. The fifth spot will eventually belong to Scobie.
The bullpen will have to prove it can overcome the absence of Jose Cabrera. Some of that void will be filled by Judd Songster, who has a 2.65 ERA and hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 21 2/3 innings.
“Unfortunately, we’re almost back to square one with our bullpen also,” Hayes said. “We sputtered at the beginning of the year without our closer, Jose Cabrera. Now that he’s gone, we kind of have to hope that the struggles we had at the beginning of the year don’t resurface.”
While the Barnstormers would like to ride their pitching, there are obvious concerns. The team allowed 62 runs in the final seven games of the first half and that included a shutout against York Thursday night. Over the last 13 games, Lancaster has been outscored by 44 runs. That’s the kind of number you expect to see from the Road Warriors.
BOTTOM LINE:
The Barnstormers have a long way to go to catch Newark, the presumed frontrunner in the Freedom Division in the second half. When it comes to position player talent, the team also lags significantly behind York, which has done an excellent job of fine-tuning its lineup over the past month.
Barring some big-time additions, it’s hard to envision Lancaster being a contender over the final 70 games.

Hope the guys could take it easy and relax and good luck to the Stormers in the 2nd half!!! Hope its exciting!!!
Not looking good no matter how many Brownies get made.
Thanks Jason for the preview! It should be interesting how things turn out.
Hey, “the Brownie Fairy” is listening… LOL
I for one am excited about the second half of baseball, the slate gets wiped clean and everyone starts out 0-0. We’ll see how the new editions help out the hometown Stormers, if nothing else, it should be entertaining.
One thing that bothers me and has for some time and I hate to bring up old wounds, but a few games ago, Game #67, a blogger posted somthing that really bothered me and I wanted to get it off my chest.
This blogger metioned that SS Danny Gonzalez was not trying his hardest and not being a team leader ” all of the time. ” Well, this is what I have to say about it……….
Does this blogger undertand that Danny has played in EVERY GAME since the beginning of the season ? He has not rested an inning. That’s 70 games total so far, with maybe one day off per month to rest. ( and Danny is not the only one who has done this I think… Lloyd might be another. ) Now, if that was your job or my job, we’d be complaining to every Tom, Dick, and Harry who would listen about how over worked we are, how underpaid we are, and we are not getting any pats on the back for the work we have put in. We’d be demanding a vacation, or maybe a long weekend to spend with family and/or friends, or at least overtime pay if the time off was not available. If Danny seems a little “off” on a night or two, I do not begrudge him this in the least.
Players arrive at the stadium everyday ( of a game ) around 2pm or so, give or take a 1/2 hr. They go though batting practice, fielding practice, go through treatments for sore muscles, and any other bumps or bruises they have. They are on the field by 6:15pm or so, warming up, stretching, signing autographs for all fans, young and old alike. Games start at 7:05, and last until at least 10-10:30pm if there are not extra innings or some sort of weather delay. ( in the past week, games have ended well past midnight.) After the game, most stick around to again sign more autographs. Then it’s into the club house for a meal of hotdogs, potato salad, pizza etc….. not exactly the good ole’ home cooking we are all use to. Imagine eating ballpark food everyday for dinner, at 11pm none the less. I’m not to sure about you, but my body would kick the ever loving crap out of me if I did that to it. Players usually return home/hotel at 11:30pm, maybe realx for a little bit… it’s usually to late to call family or friends… remember, they have “9-5″ jobs, then they get up and do it all over again… for OUR ENTERTAINMENT.
I’m not saying that you have to coddle or feel sorry for these guys, but look at it from their point of view every now and again and ask yourself how motivated you would be every day if you had to travel and work 27 days straight ( from June 10th to July 7th ). Danny is a great player ( All-Star selection ) and I’m sure that he cares about this town and team, and wants to see both do well, and is willing to put his butt on the line every night to do so.
My 2 cents worth…………………………………………..
I don’t see this team competing in the second half. When we sign new guys it doesn’t seem that we are improving. Other teams are signing ex big leaguers and we are getting guys that haven’t been above single A. That is quite a disparity. This is one time when I really hope that I am wrong. Our last 3 halves have not been real enjoyable. Best of luck boys.
I agree…Deuce
stormerguy,
I am the blogger who stated that Danny should be a team leader. He came with the reputation, he is a short stop and he plays every game. I get upset with Danny when he does not play a ball out, when he walks onto the field instead of running. When he saunters after a ball and watches it get away. As a fan I get frustrated and I am not the only one. I hear it almost every game.
I have been a season ticket holder for a few years and I do not care that the guys are not in first place, I get upset when the guys do not play their best.
Amen Maureen.
Good point Maureen again!
Danny has always played every day ( since he’s been here )and he also is not the only one who DOES play everyday as mentioned before…but when he doesn’t hustle, this reflects badly on the entire team. There are certainly other guys who play every day yet they are hustling and making the plays. Don’t get me wrong…I enjoy when Danny makes one of his all star caliber type plays…but the effort is not there all the time. He “lolly gags”..one minute after a good play…how many times is the next one a “I can’t get to it play?”
I also do not care that we arent in first place..that would be nice but again, if the fans are getting a consistant effort and losing..its different than lack of effort and losing…OR the team just simply not being good enough!
I agree as well Maureen. Danny is short stop he is to game every game every inning. I agree they may not get paid a lot but he choose to be a ball player, he has condition himself as one. I am not stating he should be running all over the place. I am just asking to give some excitement in your step and at like you want to play. Walking in and out of the dug out is not acceptable. Not chasing down ball coming your way is not acceptable. I understand that there will be days when he is not 100% and will have errors but I see him every home game walking.
Don’t get the impression I hate Danny, he is very talented when he wants to be.
stormguy708.. You may be talking to me as I posted about Danny. First you need to know my back ground. I played baseball in the minors so I know how the game works. I played every position but catcher, pitcher, and short. I played mostly third and the outfield corners. I played 126 or 127 games without a day off. We had 6 days off durning that time (2 were for the all-star game in the Midwest league). I also had 3 or 4 game during that time that I did not play the whole game and I don’t even remember how many games went extra innings. I played hard every play.
Now, why don’t you look though stats for the Majors and the minors and see how many players have played in every game. There will not be a ton but there will be a lot. Also look at how many may have 1 or 2 games off. I would bet most of those players (The minor league ones) are giving it their best every play.
The problem with Danny is that he take more than one game or one play off. If he take a couple of plays off or does not run out a pop up once in a great while then fine. I will give him a pass even if I feel you should be happy playing this game and should give it your all every play. The problem is he does this most games. He looks and acts like he does not want to be there most games. I see him make one great play that shows he may be one of the best players in this league and then watch him not hustle on the next two plays when he could of got the ball or run out a pop up.
I could say it better (PTW)
Hey Guys! Let’s just start this second half on a happy note. Let’s play some good, sound, respectable baseball and win some games.
I don’t think anyone is giving up on the Barnstormers, yet.
See you all at the ballpark!
I agree a little bit with all of you about Danny. Look at it from Von and Keith’s spot. At this time of the year how are they going to get a shortstop with his range and hitting ability. There has only been in my opinion two other shortstops in this league that compare to Gonzalez over the last four years. That would be the starting shortstop for the ALL STAR team Castro and the other is Jason Bowers who we had and Danny played second when Jason was here.
So instead of giving the team more of a big hole to fill in there lineup and they might as well stay with what they got. And if I remember right Gonzalez stepped up in the great 2006 season when Bowers left and but up some good numbers.
Barnstormers have a great second half.
Thanks for a good first half.
I think Danny’s stilled p@#&%d off Dave forgot him at the ring presentation on opening day 2007.
He’ll show them.
Let’s all relax and get ready for the second half. Here’s some humor that might help. I got this off the Lancaster Barnstormers website:
“Waffle Bat & Ball Giveaway – Sponsored by: Blue Ridge Communications ”
Can we eat the bats after we play with them. I heard some melted butter and maple syrup go great with Waffle Bats!” LOL
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

Why do we lose our avatars?
Do we have to login every now and then at WordPress.com. so they know we still exist?
Yep, that’s the sitch, TB
Good luck tomorrow. Start the second half with a bang!
Doesn’t being in 1st place feel great (even if it is a 4 way tie). Just knowing that the worst we will be is 1 game out instead of 10 after tonight makes things better too. Good luck guys, let’s start the 2nd half off right!
Jason – Did you ever hook up with the band “Von Hayes” for an interview and a possible appearance at a game? I kremember you mentioned something about it early in the season.
I’m in touch with “The Von Purple Hayes” on myspace. I could give them a shout out.
Have a great road trip guys !!
I have a wonderful Idea the second half starts today, so let’s start the second half off right on the blog. let’s not ripe apart players when they do bad.. that would be nice..
Those are FACTS about Gonzalez…not ripping him apart kelley. Thats the way he projects an image…I have nothing against him or anyone else.
Oh and lil fil i agree with you about Danny..he is one of the best shortstops in the league. And yes Von and Keith do not need to look any further for a shortstop..
I am not sure where I would be if I didnt give my boss my best effort everyday. He hasnt ever told me that it was okay if I just went through the motions at work when I felt like it. Besides I cant just slack off at work, my job has to be done with a certain pride and expertise that I cant slack off when I feel like it. If you dont want the job 100% of the time, do something else.
I work from 730am to 900 pm 4-5 days a week. We all have jobs that are not “perfect,” but we have to make do and still accomplish our goals. Every day I am faced with a new set of problems, yet I still have to finish all of my work and “perform” for my customers without excuses. And my employers feed me nothing after a hard day’s work so sorry if I dont feel sympathy there.
Sorry about the rant. It just hit a nerve that we should settle for less than a near 100 % effort daily.
Agree pack..nice post…sums it up quite nicely!
