It’s a new beginning for the Barnstormers, who are trying to avoid the same old fate. They want to shake their recent habit of getting off to poor starts. In the first 20 games of their last three halves, they’ve gone 6-14, 6-14 and 7-13. They’ve been buried in the standings after three weeks and have never recovered.
The first six games set up favorably this week. The Barnstormers play three at Bridgeport and three at home against Long Island. Those teams combined to finish 10 games under .500 in the first half and they rank sixth and eighth in the league in ERA.
Even better, the odd scheduling — which has the second half beginning before the All-Star break — gives the Barnstormers a chance to optimally set up their rotation.
Josh Hall was moved up to start tonight. That means he can start three of the first seven games of this half, if manager Von Hayes so chooses. Considering the fact the Barnstormers are 8-1 with Hall on the mound and 22-39 with someone else, this is a fortunate development.
While the dearth of position player upgrades has been frequently lamented on this site, the Barnstormers have often been able to find mid-season pitching additions straight out of affiliated ball. Hall, who came here from Double-A Harrisburg, and lefthander Shane Youman are two examples this season. Zack Parker was the team’s best pick-up in the second half of last season.
Over his last four starts, Hall has a 2.42 ERA and has allowed 24 hits in 27 innings. His WHIP is 1.19 during that time, so he has done an excellent job of keeping runners off base — no small feat in this league. When the pitching staff was getting pummeled last week, Hall was the one exception. He threw eight shutout innings against York Thursday.
“I just go out there and give it everything,” Hall said. “I just pray that I pitch well. I know I’ve had a couple of rough starts. But for the most part, the strides I’ve made since I got here are a lot better compared to where I was when I was in Harrisburg.
“I was a mess. I was just struggling. This is a funny game. It’ll humble you quick. It got to my head. The biggest thing is I got my confidence back.”
Hall begins the Barnstormers’ quest to become relevant again in the standings. They’re looking to avoid going two entire seasons without playing meaningful baseball.

There really wasn’t a single standout player in this game for the Barnstormers as the offense was spread around. Hall gets the nod because this team always seems to play well enough to win when he’s on the mound. Hall is 5-1 with a 4.52 ERA. The team is 9-1 in his outings.
NOTES:
*Interestingly, Kevin Kotch started at catcher and Manny Mejia wasn’t in the lineup. Kotch has started five of the last six games behind the plate. His two-run triple was the biggest hit of the night. Kotch is slugging .609 since coming to Lancaster and has more at-bats with the Stormers than he had with the Revs.
*This was the first true save test since Jose Cabrera was suspended. Ryan Cullen and Judd Songster passed. They combined to retire all six batters they faced with four strikeouts. It was Songster’s first save since June 30, 2007 when he was with Double-A Tulsa.
*Juan Francia and Mike Woods, the 1-2 hitters in the lineup, combined to reach base five times and scored three runs.
*DH Greg Blosser returned to the lineup for the first time since July 1. He was out with a sore calf.
*OF Luis Perez went hitless five at-bats: four groundouts and a pop up to shortstop. Perez is mistakenly listed as D.J. Mattox in the above box score.
The bottom line:
This was a nice win. The Barnstormers need to get off to a good start in the second half to avoid the “here we go again” feeling. Blowing a 5-0 lead with the No. 1 starter on the hill would have been a punch to the gut. Bridgeport cut the deficit to 6-5, but could never pull even. Lancaster is 7-1 all-time in the openers of the first or second half.

Best of luck to the guys in Bridgeport!!!
Any bloggers headed up to Bridgport today?
Good luck

I thought it was pretty funny.
Good luck tonight, guys! Let’s start the second half off on a high note!
Jason, great second half preview. I have always been a Barnstormers defender to my astute baseball friends but it is becoming more difficult. As has been outlined before, we now have three players with no professional experience and to my knowledge they did not have particularly stellar college careers. Our newest position player was released by an American Association team, a league that is a step or two below the Atlantic League on the independent league ladder. What makes our situation so unique? Other Atlantic League teams do not seem to have player acquisition problems to the same extent we do.
Jason. I’ve been meaning to ask you. What ever happened to The Fan Lines in the Lancaster newspapers? I read the Harrisburg Patriot almost everyday. They have a great sports section, including the Fan Line. I can’t even remember how long ago it was that we had it in our papers.
hitone,
The Barnstormers haven’t excelled in the area of player procurement mostly because they haven’t treated it as an essential part of their operation. The franchise didn’t even have a true head of baseball ops in 2006 or 2007.
In some ways, the Barnstormers are still paying the price for the 2007 reunion tour. Most players are acquired through word of mouth and when you don’t add a lot of new guys, you don’t get the networking that comes from typical roster turnover. This team has one player, Mike Woods, who was signed between October of 2006 and February of 2008. So for 18 months this team didn’t expand its talent base at all.
The Barnstormers haven’t had any stability with their baseball operations. Von Hayes is a first-year manager with no indy ball experience. Keith Lupton ran the show in 2005, but wasn’t part of BASA the previous two seasons. Look at the teams that have been successful lately: Newark, Somerset and Long Island. All have managers and player procurement people who have been in this league a long time.
One other factor: the disabled list. When you’re paying six or seven guys who aren’t playing, including top players like Bladergroen and Burkhart, it’s difficult to succeed. There’s less money to spend and more holes to fill.
Perhaps a silly question, but I’m not sure how things are done in the indy league back office.
If I understand correctly, most pro sports teams have insurance to pay large salaries when players get injured. I guess the Atlantic League doesn’t have such an arrangement?
Was that really a question?
GO DANNY!!!! Hope you have a fabulous game tonight and congrats on all who made the All Star team. Including DANNY!!!!!
dj- I was thinking the same thing about insurance. Also, I would think that most of the guys would be covered by worker’s comp., which still costs the organization money, but would help somewhat.
Hopes are running high. 100% behind the team!
Let’s Go Stormers!
dadTB
Looking good …. we are still in 1st place!
Let’s start this second half on the right foot.
Matt keep up the great work you have been producing!
I thought it was pretty interesting that 2 players who were pitchers on the Barnstormers in the past were released by other teams today..
Clint Smith (2005) was released by Edinburg of the United League
John Boker (2006) was released by Brockton of the Can Am league.
As I recall Boker came here at the end of 2006 and pitched pretty well for us.
Worst to First…it has happened. Play hard and anything can happen.
GO STORMERS!!!!
ultimate, dawn and i are going up on thursday but not tonight. we’ll take pics of thorpe if he pitches that day.
Go Stormers, it’s wide open, have some fun out there!
Last score I heard was 6-0, US !!!!!
Let’s just take it one inning at a time gang, one inning at a time.
oops.. 5-0 US
Home already rad? Didnt you have a previous engagement tonight?
Dancing bananas? Dave…you had better be careful when ordering your iced tea!!! LOL!
Let’s go, Stormers! Looks good so far, 6-3!
6-5 Final????
WooHoo!
1st place!
Way to go guys!!!!
Congrats to Judd for his first save in some time. Way to start the second half off guys! Keep up the good work.
Way to go Guys!!! Great job Judd for your first save!!
Looking forward to Thurs. Hey, Ultimate I will try and take pics of Thorp if he pitches.
Thanks DopeyDawn and Stormers08. Hope you have a great time in Bridgeport!
Congratulations, Barnstormers!!!! I got to listen to a little of the game on the way home from work. Sounded like a strong pitching effort after a decent early outburst of offense. Hopefully, we can keep that up.
Sounds like Kotch might be the Russ Cleveland of 2008. He seems to add some hustle and enthusiasm to the lineup, hence the start tonight.
I enjoyed Von Hayes’s objective comments of the Barnstormers in yesterday’s paper. I was glad to see that he wasnt happy with the status quo and would like to see some upgrades also. I think that is in agreement with a lot of the comments made on the blog referring to improving player procurement.
By the way….when “brownie fairies” bring you goodies….you should at least mention them by name…..
The Brownie Fairy in question, whose wares were quite good by the way, goes by the nickname of Rad.
I figured who that was. I heard you folks on Sunday, Dave. I just thought credit should go where credit is due.
And Dave, keep up the good work. You are still head and shoulders above other baseball game broadcasters. Thanks for your best efforts.
Way to go Team! Have fun Dopeydawn and stormers08 on Thur.
Way to go, Stormers! Good luck today!
If my math is correct, the magic number to win the 2nd half is 69! Do you think it’s too early to start tracking this? LOL
Pack – will you be there Fri or Sat?
Barney, I will be there on Saturday. You just wanted to know so you could avoid the screaming kids for the Pizza Hut Scream for the Pizza Promo. IM Fun will make sure he does it Saturday since I will be there. Ha ha
Magic number at 69. Barney, you are challenging Stormin for the optimist of the year award.
I agree, Dave you are awesome! I listen to your broadcast when the team is away. I love to hear the excitement in you voice, it make you feel like you are there.
Go Stormers!
The “Brownie Fairy” must work very hard to sneak those hidden goodies in the York. The stadium personnel over there don’t appreciate ANY goodies being brought in .. for ANYONE.
Dave.. I didn’t know you had company in the booth or I would have put more in the package.
I rushed right home after the “Previous engagement” last night didn’t want to miss the game… then I fell asleep so I missed the game anyway!!!
sorry 243, I’ll do my best to stay awake tonight.
