Nick Renault 3-6, 6.72 ERA |

Pat Stanley 9-3, 3.79 ERA |

Josh Hall is the quintessential Atlantic League story. The righthander came to the Barnstormers at a low point in his career. His confidence was down. His results with Double-A Harrisburg were terrible. He was in desperate need of a fresh start.
It happened in Lancaster. While many players decide to go home for the summer after being released from affiliated ball, Hall took the Zack Parker route. He signed with the Barnstormers almost immediately after getting cut by the Nationals. He went 6-3 with a 4.10 ERA in 13 starts and is now back in Triple-A with the Rockies.
While this league has its faults, and while the Barnstormers’ player procurement has become a two-year study in frustration, Hall’s progression is one of the things that makes coming to the ballpark every night worthwhile. It’s fun to see talented players get another shot.
“If anybody deserves it in this room, he was at the top of the list,” manager Von Hayes said. “He worked hard and he wanted it.”
Hall’s good fortune is also bad news for the Barnstormers. That’s the flip side of these Atlantic League revival stories. The 10-year veteran had established himself as the staff ace. He led the team in wins and became the stopper. Over his last five starts in Lancaster, Hall had a 2.95 ERA. He’ll be difficult to replace.
The bright side is that, even though the Barnstormers have developed an allergy to signing position players, they’ve been adept at upgrading their pitching staff. Hall was a mid-season addition, of course. So were Shane Youman and Jason Scobie, both of whom have made a positive impact. There’s hope that the team can find another pitcher to at least take Hall’s slot.
In the meantime, the Barnstormers have to count on Nick Renault turning things around and Yamel Guevara excelling as a starter. Renault is 0-4 with a 16.07 ERA in his last four outings. Guevara, who has mostly fared well as a reliever, is 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in a starting capacity.
Although Ricardo Gomez has a 4.44 ERA in his five starts, Hayes said he plans to keep Gomez in the bullpen. The team doesn’t believe his repertoire of pitches translates well to a bigger role. It also worries about his durability over the long term. Barring any additions, it’s Scobie, Youman, Renault, Guevara and Eric Ackerman in the rotation. That’s OK, but it’s not what it could have been if Hall was still here.

Frank Rodriguez (9).
Barnstormers: Nick Renault, Sendy Rleal (5), Judd Songster (8), Paul Thorp (9).
Box score:
RECORD: 8-7 (38-47)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ivanon Coffie
The third baseman homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs. Coffie is a real force at the Clip with five homers and eight RBIs in 48 at-bats. He also made a costly error that helped Newark’s three-run rally in the fifth inning. As was wrote in a game thread earlier this week, the Barnstormers need to sacrifice defense for offense. They need Coffie’s bat, especially at home. It paid off big-time in this one.
NOTES:
*Jordan Herr’s game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the ninth saved the Barnstormers from a gut-wrenching loss. The youngest player on the roster has shown he can handle pressure situations. Herr is 4-for-5 with the bases loaded. This was the biggest hit of his brief pro career.
*Judd Songster is in a funk. The righthander allowed a two-run homer to Ruben Mateo that made it 7-6 in the eighth and a three-run homer to Ramon Castro that put the Bears ahead 9-8 in the ninth. After going nearly 25 innings without allowing an earned run, Songster has been tagged for eight runs in the last 2 1/3 innings.
*Sendy Rleal was an unsung hero:
| 3 IP | 1 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 1 BB | 1 K |
Rleal pitched very well. He should have escaped Renault’s fifth-inning jam unscathed. He entered with the bases loaded and one out, but two errors led to three runs. The righthander was put in another jam by the defense in the seventh when a botched sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with no outs. He escaped that situation with no runs allowed and held onto a precarious 5-4 lead.
*Lloyd Turner belted a key three-run homer in the third inning. The utility man has taken advantage of the RBI chances that come with being lower in the order. He has driven in eight runs in the past six games.
*Matt LeCroy extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the third inning. He and Norm Hutchins stand side-by-side with the team record.
*Kevin Kotch made his first pro start in RF. He was pulled in favor of Herr in the sixth inning.
BOTTOM LINE:
Hey, it wasn’t a masterpiece. They committed five errors, struck out 14 times and blew a ninth-inning lead. The Barnstormers still found a way to pull it out with a dramatic ninth-inning rally. That’s three wins in a row for just the second time this season. They go for the sweep Sunday.

Great job last night guys. I was at the game and was very proud to see the hustle and the drive to win through the entire game. Let’s go for a 3rd win and show those Bears who deserves to be on top.
As far as signing another catcher, who in their right mind does that? We have Manny, who is a better batter then catcher but gets the job done. Then we sign Kevin who, I feel, is a good player but dosen’t get the playing time. What in the heck are we going to do with a 3rd catcher? Is he going to be placed in the bullpen for warming up relief pitchers? Yea, that will help the team!! We need depth in the outfield now more then ever with the release of Perez, which no one knows why he is gone.
I still support the players, even though it appears Management does not. Go get them tonight boys, hopefully I’ll be there in person to see you rip Newark again.
What a great game last night, guys. I know that I enjoyed the entire evening at The Clipp. The pitching was right on and the hitting was phenomenal.
I felt Jordan Herr’s pain as he struck out, but I am extremely positive that won’t be for long. He hasn’t played much since the first week he signed and he needs to get his timing down again. Possibly, with the departure of Luis Perez, Jordan may see more playing time in RF.
Thanks again for the ‘Free Wings’, guys. Mom and I stopped at the Brickyard last night for our two dozen. I had the Chesapeake Seasoning wings and she had milds. Plus a couple of our favorite liquid libations, made for a terrific evening in July… Wings and Baseball.
I was super impressed with the mid relief pitching and the closer last night. You guys did a fantastic job shutting the door on the Bears.
Let’s do it tonight. It’s time for Nick to kick in and do what I know he can do… Win Games!
Let’s Go Stormers!
dadTB
First off Perez was released for non-baseball reasons as Jason said. From what I know is that they are non-baseball reasons that the Barnstormers management could not control, they had to release him.
Second, I think that this new catcher will be an upgrade to Kevin. Kevin did well when he first came over from York but is not getting much playing time now. But I agree that now our needs are starting pitching and outfield.
The need for an OF isn’t something new, The need for a hard hitting OF has existed since Brian Stavisky signed with the Angels. And that was when? around Memorial Day.
I’m guesing that other people know and won’t say that Perez was released due to problems with his work visa. I’m not sure why that is a big secret.
Lets not forget about Adamchick. We have him in the pen, Kevin.. and Manny There is no need for another catcher.
The team played like champions last night.. let’s leep it up. The more wins.. the more Brownies .. PERIOD !
maize,
The lack of OF production is ironic considering this is the team that released Dominick Ambrosini in April. They never did replace his production. Ambro hit 19 homers in 380 at-bats last season. Woods, Hileman, Ball and Herr have 18 homers in 794 at-bats.
As for the catching situation …
The Barnstormers have two catchers: Mejia and Kotch. Mejia has hit well, but he was signed to be a backup. He has been shaky defensively. Kotch is hitting .186 in 102 at-bats. I don’t see how adding depth to that position is a negative. Trying to upgrade is a refreshing change of pace around here.
Speaking of upgrading: York signed another ex-big leaguer today.
will Not be there tonight but go get them guys. Lets play like we did like we care.
Upgrading at catcher is essential, manny and kotch are both liabilities defensively. the loss of perez is not a killer, the team is much better defensively with herr in right. if the strength of this team right now is pitching, then we had better field the best defensive team possible. i believe that we can score enough runs to win as long as the situational hitting improves.
perez has no work visa issues.
actually he does. his visa was specifically for his original team and not transferable to another city.
We are going into the 4th month of the season. What makes you think the situational hiiting will improve. We got mostly the same players; they are not going to change. . It’s not like you can flick a switch to on.
if players couldn’t change and get better then there would be no need for the minor leagues.
jason- your comments yesterday about it being stale after 07 were interesting. the 06 playoffs with code red etc was the most electrifying experience we’ve had locally in years. why not bring the guy back responsible for that. he was a manager that respected and got respect from his players, niether of which we have had since.
no he doesn’t. yes there is a fee of 320 dollars that the barnstormers needed to pay but that’s not a problem….that’s an excuse!
Congrats to Thorp, Herr and the whole team! I had to leave at the end of the 8th. Missed all the excitement!
Jason – Is taking the win on only 3 pitches a record for a pitcher for the Barnstormers?
Maybe this will settle the dispute between stormers08 and birdman regarding the visa issue and the visa transfer issue OR it will complicate things further.
Found this on the internet. Oh well, here goes nothing.
“The H1B transfer bill approved in the Senate and House (Bill S.2045) now enables valid H1B visa holders to change jobs upon the filing of a new petition by the new employer as long as the individual is in lawful status at the time of filing and has not engaged in any unauthorized employment since his or her last lawful admission.”
Most exciting Game of the Year. Electric…….Jordan, hold your head high…you belong !! Judd, shake it off, you are a vital part of this BP. Jutt…you should have gone back to the Old Song a long time ago
Trace is the Man!!
Ivanon…Lloyd…Sendy….EVERYONE…GREAT GAME. Thanks for not quitting!!
A sweep would be lovely!!
Congrats to Jordan. Nice hit to left. All of your hustling will pay off. Way to hang in there and get the better of that ex-major leaguer.
If we had a third catcher, Hayes would have been able to pinch run for Mejia in the ninth. (I know it worked out that he didnt need to.) But it would have been nice to been able to pinch run Francia for Mejia in that ninth inning–he was the tying run. At first, I couldnt understand why Von didnt pinch run, but our only other catcher not on the DL was Kotch and he was already out of the game.
I was also glad to see Jutt switch his “batting song” maybe it will bring him better luck. Ha ha
But guys, we must hustle all the time. Ian’s pop up bunt showed us tonight why. We hustle, we get that extra base maybe, we get that extra run maybe, we get that extra win.
That pop up looked like a sure out….but it wasnt!!!!!!
All I can say is… Thank you for winning! I was having yet another heart attack with the breakdown on the field.
I can’t believe I watched poor Ian attempting to filed a dead ball with his glove… bobble it… and then make a throwing error. Two errors in one play.
Then when he came up to bat, he bunted that pop up and just gingerly jogged down the line anticipating that it would be caught… Opps! Better get on the horse and get to first base. :-/
I’m sure Ian was terribly happy that he was able make it to first base and didn’t have to listen to that…
Focus and the mental errors will improve.
It was like someone opened up a can of mistakes in the fifth inning, but we recovered and moved on.
One more game in this series and I’m hoping for the best.
Gonna be at the Keystone Games in York tomorrow. Most likely won’t make it back for tomorrow evening’s game. So, when I turn on the radio on my ride home, I want to hear that we are winning and everyone is getting…
“Free Wings!”
Let’s Go Stormers!
dadTB
The guys do deserve a “well done” for putting the mistakes behind them and punching out the win. They did persevered.
Again!! Congratulations on the win. Again they didnt give up.
Barney….quick!! what is the magic number??????
Great job tonight guys!!!
Keep it going!!!
I heard the team did a great job. lets keep it up.
Nice job guys !!! I should be there tonight.
Someone told Jutt to change back to Swing Batter.. earlier in the season. Glad to see and hear he finally took MY advice…;)
I had to leave the game early. The dog was exhausted and the cowbells were just to much for her. Turned off the car radio at 8-9 cause I just didn’t have the courage to listen.. Turned it back on to listen to Tom and the post-game VICTORY interview…
oh geewizzzzzzzzzzz. I’ll never do that again !!!
Jordan.. GREAT JOB !!!!
Magic Number = 55
Took a chance staying with the dog and it paid off. She lasted the whole game but needless to say is wiped out this morning. I know it was an ugly win, but the key is we did it. Not to long ago I don’t know if we would have been able to comeback in the 9th. Great job!
For you lottery players out thereLooks like the lottery number for today is 109 (Phils win 10-9 and Stormers win 10-9)
And another thing.. I turn on the Phillies game to watch Cole blow a 4-1 lead ……. 4-9 when I turn it off only to hear the Phils WON ??? I am bad Karma. Don’t worry, I promise to not watch another Phillies game so they should take the World series for ya Barney.. and Maddie
ptbnl, thanks for the info. like i said, it’s not a problem transferring his visa.
Blade, don’t think twice of the idiot in section 8 yelling out that you are a train wreck. Everyone knows that it was just a fluke and you will have bad days now and then. You are a awesome 1st base and just keep making your comeback.
Matt aka “Big Country” break the record tonight! I will be rooting for you.
Stormers, last night is what you needed and deserve. 3 in a row! How cool does it feel? Just think a sweep will back it even feel better.
First Place! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
Can’t make it to the game tonight, but hope all of you have a great time.
ptbnl- thanx for clearing up perez visa issue. obviously his employment here was “unauthorized” since no new petition was made by the stormers prior to his coming here. who knows how long that could take any way
