The Barnstormers have decided that if they can’t sign an outfielder, they’ll create one. The team shifted 1B Ian Bladergroen to right field for Wednesday night’s game. It was a move designed to jumpstart a slumping offense.
Bladergroen, according to his official stats, had never played in the outfield prior to this experiment. He misplayed a routine fly ball in the first inning, turning it into a double, and handled his other two chances cleanly.
“I’d like for him to be able to do it, at least at home in our ballpark,” manager Von Hayes said. “I know in a bigger ballpark it might be a little tough to do. With the shallow ground out there against left-handed pitching, we can get another right-handed bat in the lineup. We might even see either (David) Castillo or (Brian) Munhall play first base.
“We’ll see how it goes. I worked him out there a little bit and it seemed like he was at least catching the fly balls. We’re not asking for him to rob anybody of home runs or anything like that — just make routine plays and drive in four a night and I’ll be happy.”
The Barnstormers need to get some production from the outfield. CF Jutt Hileman, who sat out Wednesday night, has a .387 slugging percentage and has only walked 18 times in 336 at-bats. Jordan Herr is batting .203 with two homers and 12 RBIs in 24 games.
By shifting Bladergroen to the outfield and putting Matt LeCroy at first base, the Barnstormers can have both Munhall and Castillo in the lineup. One at catcher and the other at DH. Those two have combined for eight extra-base hits in 39 at-bats in their brief tenures here.
This decision has its drawbacks. It weakens the team defensively at two positions. Plus, if the Barnstormers are in a close game and they want to sub Bladergroen from the outfield, they have to remove either he or LeCroy from the game — which robs the club of one of its best bats at a potentially key moment.
But having both Munhall and Castillo in there deepens the lineup a little bit. The Barnstormers scored eight runs on 11 hits in the first game of this experiment. They had a bottom three of the order that included Ivanon Coffie, Mike Woods and Herr — which is a little more dangerous and versatile than what the team has presented in the past.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jason Belcher
Somerset’s catcher went 4-for-5 and scored the game-winning run in the 11th inning. Belcher also hit the game-changing grand slam in Wednesday night’s game. It was quite a series for him.
NOTES:
*Erik Dessau turned in another gem:
| 7 IP | 7 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 1 BB | 6 K |
Dessau has pulled off a difficult feat. He has allowed two runs in 13 innings in his two starts and hasn’t earned a win. That’s what happens when you’re backed by the worst offense in the league. The righthander’s addition has been a huge lift to the depleted rotation.
“He pitched very well,” manager Von Hayes said. “Obviously, good enough to win a game. All the guys pitched great. We didn’t get anything going offensively. It’s just obvious. It couldn’t have happened at a worse time because we’re short on pitching.”
*Ivanon Coffie smashed his eighth home run. The third baseman just missed three homers earlier in this series before he finally put one over the wall. He snapped out of a 4-for-29 slump with a homer and double, which is a good sign because his bat is vital to the Barnstormers.
On the flip side …
Coffie’s throwing error in the 11th led to the game-winning run. It wasn’t a routine play. It wasn’t a terribly difficult play. It was somewhere in the middle and it should have been made.
“It was a chopper and I came in running,” Coffie said. “I just had an off-balanced throw to home plate. I didn’t have any time to set and try to make a good throw. I threw it off-balanced and it sailed away from the catcher.”
*The Ian Bladergroen-to-RF experiment was put on hold. He was back at 1B. Lloyd Turner made a start in CF in place of Jutt Hileman. Turner has started at five positions over the past two weeks.
*The offense was non-existent again. The Barnstormers have scored three runs or fewer seven times in the last nine games.
BOTTOM LINE:
The Barnstormers finished their homestand at 2-5. They lost a series to rival York and dropped three of four to Somerset, which was shorthanded and less-than-motivated. Lancaster has dropped back to .500 and has lost its grip on first place.
“We were hoping to come home here and really play well like we usually do at home and create some separation,” Hayes said. “That wasn’t the case. You deal with it. We pick our heads up and go fight tomorrow.”

Too bad Coffie can’t move to the outfield and keep Ian in the infield. Coffie doesn’t seem to be the best infielder, and Ian seems to react well to the fast plays.
I agree Amy, we need Coffie’s bat (when he’s not in the slump he’s been in and out of) but he’s the Error King and has trouble at times. He did grab some line drives last night but that rarely happens. I’ll rather see Lloyd Turner at 3rd…he was awesome there!
Good idea Amy but that would still leave us with 2 guys at 1st (Matt and Ian). I am fine with this move but as a fan I will trust Von is doing the right thing and isn’t asking for miracles (except the driving in 4). That’s a great quote.
“We’ll see how it goes. I worked him out there a little bit and it seemed like he was at least catching the fly balls. We’re not asking for him to rob anybody of home runs or anything like that — just make routine plays and drive in four a night and I’ll be happy.”
Maybe we can get a look at Caruso at 3rd?
Ian is a first baseman, period!
Got to give Von credit for thinking outside the box and trying something really different to generate more offensive production. If there had been blogs in 1968 wonder what would have been said about Mayo Smith starting a gold glove outfielder at SS for all seven games of the World Series.
That was just my opinion. I’m not an expert on baseball. I was just going off some observations since I seem to be at every game. I would place Ian at first, Lloyd at third and Mike at second. I guess we will see what happens.
Jason, you said if the Barnstormers put in a defensive replacement for Ian in the OF, they would have to remove either Ian or Lecroy. Why couldn’t one or the other replace the DH.
Indeed, I do give Hayes a lot of credit for shaking things up last night, the status quo has largely been a boring failure for the past year and a half. Now what I’d like to see is if last night’s offensive surge was a fluke or if there’s really something to it. Considering how often it’s brought up that offense determines who lives and who dies in this league, I don’t think it was all that big of a deal to have people playing in different positions. After all, what’s the worst that can happen? Besides, it’s obvious that pitching is the far greater concern now. Again.
Mark,
The worst that could happen is you lose your All-Star catcher for the year.
Or was that a rhetorical question?
(Yeah, I know, it’s not BECAUSE he was playing 1B, he just HAPPENED to be playing 1B at the time. I’m Just PLAYING devil’s advocate.)
maize,
The DH can only be replaced by someone who isn’t already in the lineup — i.e. a pinch runner or pinch hitter.
The 3rd and 5th inning basicly settled our fate last night. At the end of the 3rd I knew we were going to lose Cuz Renault’s 2 walks in the 3rd created the slam then our 2 catchers in the lineup got a single then a double with no-one out yet as usual the last yr. and 1/2 we didn’t score. then we did it again bases loaded …1 score. Doesn’t matter the lineup…you just have to hit in the clutch and we stink there. Again my opinion.
Ya thanks. What confused me was that I had seen a DH become a defensive position player. So I thought a position player could replace a DH. I believe the rule that covers it reads “A designated hitter is locked in the batting order. No multiple substitutions may be made that will alter the batting rotation of the DH. “
Looking forward to seeing Eric Dessau pitch tonight when I come out to The Clip. Listened to his first start on WLPA. Looks like an interesting pitching match up with Josh Brey.
Don’t know if the Stormers can contend for the second half divisional title, but I have enjoyed seeing new players like David Castillo, Brian Munhall and Paul Caruso. May not be the big bat needed in the outfield, but they have brought great energy to the field and some key hits from David and Brian.
Tip of the hat to Paul Thorpe. He’s done a fine job lately. Enjoy seeing him come out of the pen to pitch! And Ryan Cullen as usual.
Good luck stormers I do not think I will be at the game. I hate to miss this one with all the players playing different spots.
Do you think that the Oreo Cakester is part of the worldwide conspiracy to mainstream the whoopie pie?

Curious strategy, having Woods sacrifice, and then letting both Herr and Caruso bat. I can go along with the sacrifice. Just surprised a PH wasn’t used.
Von Hayes was probably believing in the proverb………”even a blind squirrel gets an acorn sometime.” We might even drive a guy in from scoring position, but not tonight it appears.
The bottom of our lineup is so anemic we are to the point that, in affect, we are only getting 6 at bats each game. Even as weak as our division is I am not sure we can stay in the race given this reality.
See #2 above ….. should have been an inning ending double play instead of another frustrating loss!
17: LOL….the blind squirrel theory makes the world go ’round and it kept the Barnstormers in 1st place for two weeks.
I guess tonight was pretty much inevitable. At least they held 1st place longer than a couple of days. I’m also happy that I don’t have to go back in there for a week. This series was a real letdown in most ways, especially tonight. They can fix their own problems. Or not. Whatever.
Parker started tonight with the TR Roughriders. Went 6 innings and got the win. Score was 13-4!
I bet Rad was so quiet tonight because she was listening to that game
