Brian Munhall figures to be a key part of the lineup as the Barnstormers embark on a five-game road trip starting tonight. With Matt LeCroy expected to miss a few more games with a deep bone bruise in his left knee (X-rays were negative), Munhall will likely continue to play every day.
Munhall has brought value to the team since the trade with Bridgeport on Aug. 4. He has excelled while hitting with runners in scoring position, which is one reason he has spent time in the No. 5 slot in the order. The backup catcher is 5-for-12 with RISP since coming to the Barnstormers and is hitting .350 in 100 at-bats in those situations this season.
“Those are the most important times,” Munhall said. “… It’s just being patient. Thankfully my approach is working and I’m getting a pitch I can handle instead of trying to swing at something I can’t do something with.”
Hitters and hitting coaches say the key to succeeding in clutch situations is maintaining the same approach as when there are no men on base. Batters have to fight the urge to try to hit home runs and put a crooked number on the board.
Munhall doesn’t have that problem.
“For a guy like me who doesn’t hit too many, you don’t get that urge too often,” he said. “You realize it’s only going to happen a handful of times each year. When I try to make it happen, I hit a pop up to the infield. As you get older and you’ve done it enough, you learn what you can do and what you can’t do.”
Munhall will get his first shot to play against his old team starting with this four-game set. He was surprised when Bridgeport traded him away. He was the starter there for most of the season before the Bluefish acquired Luis Rodriguez from the Can Am League’s Nashua Pride and gave Munhall the boot.
Players love to take on the team that traded them away or released them. Just ask Kyle Nichols or Kevin Kotch.
The Barnstormers’ offense, meanwhile, has only scored six runs in its last 25 innings. LeCroy’s injury certainly plays a role in that drop-off in production. He was drilled by a pitch in the first inning against Camden Monday night.
The key during this road trip will be continuing to get excellent pitching and scratching across enough runs to pull out wins. That means hitting in the clutch, which is something Munhall has done better than most.
ROSTER MOVE:
Paul Thorp’s departure has created an opening in the bullpen. The righthander is going back to school and will be placed on the inactive list today. Nick Renault will be activated from the DL to take Thorp’s spot.
Scoring summary …

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Luis Lopez
The third baseman’s three-run double in the seventh inning was part of a six-run rally that broke the game open for Bridgeport. Lopez went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. He’s hitting .331 with 68 RBIs.
BOTTOM LINE: The Barnstormers committed four errors as they slipped back to 3.5 games behind York in the Freedom Division. The quest for the playoffs is starting to resemble Sisyphus and the mountain.

Best of Luck to Thorp with college this semester!!!
Anyone going up to Bridgport this weekend?
Thorp will be missed in the pen. Good luck tonight guys. bring home some w”s
OK Nic.. we need you step up to the mound.
Have fun tonight boys… we’ll be listening
Score??
5-3 Bridgeport I think.
Ugh this game has taken a turn for the worse….!
We are carrying how many Pitchers right now? 12…??? 7 guys in the BP???? Marcotte starts the 8th walking a run in?!?!?…and he STAYS in the Game???? If Hayes has no confidence in Casa/Real/Kent then exactly why are they on the Roster???
Marcotte should have been yanked as soon as he walked a run in…..or are we NOT in a Pennant race with only 4-5 weeks to go?? We can afford to lose Close Games???
Lately the Game strategy seems to be very lacking.
I agree Booby plus it’s always the overworked bullpen…some of whom you wonder sometimes if they’re still with the team it’s been so long. Looks like we’re saving their arms for next year HeHe.
Gotta agree with you on this one Booby. Hard to beleive he wasn’t pulled. Obviously, it wasn’t his night and that was clear right away. It can’t be your night every night as a pitcher and that is o.k. Put someone else in and move on.
Gomez probably could have pitched the eighth, although I don’t know how many pitches he threw in the seventh. But once Marcotte gets into trouble, there aren’t a lot of good options. You either burn your best RH reliever (Rleal) in a game you’re losing or you bring a lefty in to face Lopez with the bases loaded.
You know what helps game strategy? Not walking home a run in the first place. And not committing four errors.
Just read this in the Rev’s Fan Newsletter:
“IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION -
Due to Upcoming William Penn High School Football games, parking will be unavailable at Small Athletic Field for three Friday night York Revolution home games against Lancaster on August 29, Long Island on September 5 and Lancaster on September 19.”
Sounds like a parking nightmare to me. I guess we can all go to Stormin’s house if we go to any games in York and he can play valet for us. lol
Hey Stormin.. you got a pool over ther too???
I got the impression that, for the past year (since Klebe was tossed, anyway), the thinking with pitchers has been “You got into this mess, you get out of it” and that’s the way it is regardless of how bad the situation might be. When Lancaster is winning 12-0, it’s probably not a bad idea to make the pitcher sweat it out and gain some valuable experience. Last night, however, it struck me that Hayes allowed the loss simply to spite the pitcher. Maybe if he’s humiliated enough he won’t suck next time. *shrug* I don’t get it either. There’s also the possibility that since the wonder team managed 4 errors in one inning, management was well into “why bother?” mode by the 8th. I don’t know about you but I’ve seen this movie plenty of times. Pitching goes the distance and busts it’s *** to have the game given away by third rate defense. Or vice versa. As long as something is screwed up.
How about we all park at a nearby restuarant and Stormin’ can shuttle us back and forth to the ballpark.
jason just wanted to let you know that juan francia was picked up last night by long island. we’re in newark as i type.
Can Long Island use Cassa or Kent, too??
don’t know. i’ll check. haha was kent ever with long island? he knows a lot of the players and it seemed like he’d played for them before.
I think Kent started the year with Long Island..or was that Bridgeport?
Parking at my house requires a “Club”, so park at your own risk. I walk so shuttling may be slow because I can only carry one person at a time. My backyard is 15′x45′ so the only pool I have is my bathtub. We will be there Friday and Sunday.
That’s great for Juan. I hope he does well there.
I’m kinda surprised that it taken some of you so long to realize that #9 has no clue how to use a pitching staff. This is probably the most glaring difference between affliated baseball and non-affiliated. In affiliated ball they tell who is going to pitch and for how many pitches. This has been going on the whole season.
Congrats To Juan. We wish you the best in/on Long Island, even against the Stormers. Show Von what he gave up…….A lot!!!!!!
Rad…Rad..Rad…I hate to break the news to you but every Player this team has cut were NOT All-Star Players. I know you love them all and see no reason whatsoever to cut any of them but…holy moly…some of these guys were very poor Baseball players and were doing nothing to help this team win.
I know…they were all nice guys. ;P
Excellent post booby.
Big ditto to #24.
Let’s face it, there are very few guys helping us win. Just take a gander at our record.
Yep…some need to get a grip on reality and decide if you want to cheer for nice guys who have some defiency in their game or if you want us to WIN on a consistant basis. This win one, lose one mentality is not a sign of a good team. Its a sign of the team we are in the standings in the second half…around .500. Nothing against the guys personally….its just a statement of who the team is as players. Like booby said…the ones released were not helping the team win….no matter how nice they are/were. The facts are what they are. they were released because they weren’t performing. Thats the bottom line isnt it?
I am assuming that people on here want us to win, make the playoffs etc. But there are others who seem to dwell more on the this guy is a nice guy kind of thing. And I wonder if they would say anything about the poor play of these guys. You can’t ignore ALL of it. I’ve said it before….the bottom line is to win.
Stormin’ – Don’t worry about providing food. We’ll have Rad make some brownies and Kelly can make some bannana and mayo sandwiches.
