There are a handful of players who definitely deserve another shot at affiliated ball. Yet, for one reason or another, they’re still hanging around the Atlantic League.
-
* Long Island’s Ray Navarrete
* Camden’s Nic Jackson
* Southern Maryland’s Pat Osborn
* Somerset’s Brandon Larson
Those guys are regarded as the cream of the crop. You know who else belongs on that list? Mike Woods. The outfielder’s stats have climbed into the stratosphere lately. He’s hitting .315 with 15 homers and 53 RBIs in 111 games. He set a franchise record with 94 runs scored, leads the team with a .418 on-base percentage and leads the league with 30 steals.
Despite all of that production, Woods remains in Lancaster.
“You always hope that somebody is out there watching you and would like to give you a chance,” Woods said. “But I just try not to think about it. I just try to go out there and play every game like it’s going to be my last time stepping on the field.”
Woods is the classic example of a late bloomer. Scouts saw his prodigious talent when he was Rickie Weeks’ double play partner at Southern University. The Tigers took Woods with the 32nd overall pick in 2001 and expected him to become a star. Woods never put up big numbers in the minors and never advanced past Double-A Erie.
It’s comical to think about now, but Woods — who didn’t play at all in 2006 — wasn’t even a starter when he joined the Barnstormers in 2007. He was the backup to Bo Hart. Over the past two seasons he has transformed into an elite player at this level. With his 28th birthday looming next month, you wonder if his development came too late.
“Right now I think the organizations are on this youth kick,” Woods said. “I feel better than I did when I was 22 or 23. I’m definitely healthier. It’s just fine tuning. That’s what I’m all about right now.”
No one seems to appreciate the game more than Woods. No one plays harder. No one signs more autographs or carries himself with a more pleasant demeanor. No one has better tools. No one on the Barnstormers has produced better stats. Woods has earned a second chance in affiliated ball. Let’s hope someone gives it to him.
NEW ADDITIONS:
The Barnstormers have signed P Wes Wilkerson and OF Bryan Sabatella. Wilkerson was with Bridgeport for most of the season. He went 1-8 with an 8.94 ERA in 39 games. Sabatella played for the Alexandria Aces of the independent United League. He batted .340 with 14 homers, 54 RBIs and 36 stolen bases in 84 games. Sabatella is expected to join the team Friday, assuming he passes a physical.

What I heard about Brandon Larson is he is still not recovered from the injury that took him out of the game.
I think it was some thing with his knee.
Your last paragraph on Mike was welll said, Jason.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Hopefully, one day
he will be able to give other ballparks (teams and fans) what he has given Lancaster.
Any news on the extent of Danny’s injury last night?
Jason, no word on Danny??
Jason… Thank you.
2008 Barnstormers Player of the Year: Michael Woods by far has out performed all players on the 2008 Barnstormers roster. His day-to-day outstanding play is one reason I come to the ballpark.
Michael is a positive role model for all young baseball players.
dadTB
was his last at bat last night a fielders choice and not a hit, my count was he was 6 for 6, well he was on base 6 times and one triple away from hitting for the cycle! That is why he should have been player of the game last night. He seems to fly under the radar but he is a joy to watch. He hustles every time he take the field and smiles every time he gets on base, he takes nothing for granted.
As of last night, Gonzalez’s injury was being described as a sprained shoulder. It was not expected to knock him out for a long period of time. Gonzalez said it felt like the shoulder popped out of the socket and went back in after his dive to field a ground ball. The doctors didn’t think there was any structural damage.
Woods’ final at-bat was a fielder’s choice. He was 5-for-6.
Woods has been clearly the best player on the team this year. Did anyone else find it interesting that noone went out to check on him after he ran into the wall? He seemed to be somewhat shaken up.
deuce….does that surprise you?
Not really but I did find it strange that another player had to go over and check on him.
Everybody keeps talking about the booster club. How many members does the club have?
Danny whistled to the pitcher and from my third base side I saw Von standing on the steps and the Doc getting ready to go out. Woods was talking with Lloyd and they both waved off the help.
Two new players. See above.
Wilkerson sounds like the answer!
Is it his record or ERA that has you convinced?
Both…. plus, our coach staff has a way of getting the best out of pitchers.
Damn….they’re scoring on DP now…..sigh…
More bad news. York wins 2-1.
In the words of Don Meredith, “The Party’s Over”….
Booby: It’s not over yet. You just have to BELIEVE!
O.K. I was wrong – this time
Hey Stormin,
I took your advice. I went to the game and sat back, relaxed and TRIED not to care about the outcome of the game. I did enjoy parts of the game. Didnt the Gochnauer game player take Woods as the person who would hit for the cycle?? She missed 25,000 bucks by one triple. Now that would hurt, missing by one hit.
Jason,
Nice full article in the New Era today (er, Wednesday) on Mike Woods. Thanks again for some extra insight.
Hey, if we’re not going to win, then at least have fun…the current consecutive streak of giving up 10+ runs is at three games. How many total games in a row will the Barnstormers allow 10 or more runs…I say 5.
On a more serious note, I know that there has been quite a bit of Von bashing going on. Someone mentioned it a day or two ago – at least the guy is friendly and signs/talks with you. My experiences with Klebe last year were not good to the point where my son called him the coach and Klebe got mad at him and told him “I am NOT a coach, I am the manager. Don’t forget that.” Great experience for an 8 year old…
At least you tried Pack. The lady who choose Woods came by and talked to my wife and I and she has a great story about his last at bat and maybe she will share with us all. I think she should get 3/4’s of the $25,000.
Last night I was “sitting back, relaxing, and not caring about the outcome of the game” and we were up 5-0. Then my wife wants to find something on YouTube so we were surfing and watching the video she wanted to see and I look up and we are now tied and just in time to see the go ahead run cross the plate. All that in the time to search, find, and watch a video.
Oh well. We still had a good time. Three games in York and we need to sweep Dork. See you all there.
I’ll take that over the 40 minutes it took for Newark to take the lead when they were down 6-1 in the 5th the night before. Man, it was like having fingernails pulled out. Last night was a good time until the rain delay. I don’t mind pathetic baseball but I’m not waiting an hour for it so that was that for me.
“Burning Image of the Week” goes to Coffie (surprise, surprise). After hitting a short fly ball that was obviously spinning like mad, he trots halfway to first and peels off when suddenly, and not totally unexpectedly (at least on my part), the ball is dropped! “RU…oh why bother?” I swear if he was hit in the crotch with a line drive he wouldn’t feel a thing.
Per Hayes, he’s a big boy and I understand why PTW doesn’t bother with this site much anymore. I’d really like to see him back next year to see what he can do after this…uh…learning experience and having put a year of indie baseball under his belt. I’d like to see Burkhart somewhere as a coach. Other than that, I hope the rest of them have a recent resume.
Stormin: thanks for the brief chat…it was pure comedy.
Stormin, I dont think anybody is meant to see any of the $25,000. They dont even do the win $1,000 if the Barnstormers get a double play inning after someone won it the first year.
I was the lucky or unlucky one the other night. Everyone in the stadium was great. I had a group of Millersville frat boys ready to streak if I won. Fun was over making sure I did not leave and Adam Gouchenauer was ready to sign that check. I tried to throw Karma Mikes way by offering th share my winnings. I am blaming Quincy
, he told Mike he just needed a triple and that flustered Michael I am sure
. I had a great time.
Hey Stormin’ I can tell the difference between a _ _ _ and a
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ now, thanks for the definition it made my evening.
Sorry you didn’t win the $25K Maureen. That would have been awesome for you!
