By my count, and this is by no means official, the Barnstormers have 37 players under contract. That includes nine on the disabled list and one on the inactive list. Assuming OF Gary Harris and C Argenis Tavarez arrive as expected, two more moves will have to be made to get the roster to 25.
As noted in Monday’s entry, the Barnstormers are determined not to let September become stale. They’re doing everything they can to make sure the team plays inspired ball down the stretch.
“The worst situation you can be in as a baseball player is playing meaningless games and nobody is having fun,” manager Von Hayes said. “I don’t want that to happen. I want the guys who have been busting their butts throughout the year to continue to do so. We’ll combine that with a couple of new additions and hopefully end the season on a good note.”
Who are the newest new guys? Let’s take a look:
Mac Nelson
| 3-0 | 4.66 ERA | 67.2 IP | 68 H | 36 BB | 62 K |
Nelson, 23, is a first-year pro out of Southern Utah who made 11 starts for St. George of the independent Golden League. The righthander will immediately be plugged into the starting rotation, taking Erik Dessau’s turn tonight. Dessau joined the growing list of guys on the DL.
Monte Mansfield
| 8-2 | 6.68 ERA | 90.1 IP | 103 H | 43 BB | 63 K |
Mansfield, 27, was Nelson’s teammate at St. George. The righthander also played for Orange County of the Golden League this season. His career stats are pretty good and he spent two full seasons at Double-A. He’s expected to be a starter here.
Gary Harris
| .305 | 12 HR | 41 RBI | 43 SB | .339 OBP | .480 SLG |
Harris, who turns 29 next week, split time between St. George and Reno of the Golden League. He’s a left-handed hitting speedster who has advanced as high as Double-A, including a brief stint at Reading. His primary position is center field. We’ll see if that’s where he plays here.
Argenis Tavarez
| .288 | 2 HR | 35 RBI | 15 SB | .346 OBP | .390 SLG |
Tavarez, 24, played for the Nashua Pride in the Can-Am League this season. His highest advancement in affiliated ball is low-A. He’s a versatile defender who also played second base, third base and outfield in Nashua. He replaces Brian Munhall as the backup catcher.

Curious exactly how many players have been on the team this year.
I’ve lost count but it has to be 100.
Once these new guys play, it’ll be 62. I think.
I like the idea of new additions, That will make for a fresh September. i would rather watch a “hungry” team any day.
The revolving door has been going on all season. Why would it seem odd now? People keep talking about consistency. How can you expect consistency when the only constant has been change? Not only does the lineup change everyday, the roster rarely stays the same for any length of time.
Is there a maximum number of games that you have to pitch before going directly to the DL??
Is just seems like all of our pitchers end up there!!!!
62 new players on their team this year? That has to be come sort of record. Thanks for the constant updates, as always.
No wonder the Programs have used the Same Roster for the last 6 weeks. No sense getting a new one printed since it changes sooooo often.
Is Lance done for the duration??? I like what I see with Sabatella. Like that nice little porch in Right Brian????
Anyway, get a slushy, a nice seat in the shade and just enjoy some Baseball.
We are only six games back. We can still do it with the right combination. Let’s start the run for the playoffs tonight.
We win tonight, then sweep SMD and LI sweeps York.
Remember the only people that like change are babies with dirty diapers.
Obama is going to be in town tommorrow night. Maybe he would like to sign a one day contract. We’ve tried just about everything else.
LOL…I’d pay extra to see Obama take on the stormers. I wouldn’t mind seeing “the fans” take them on, too. Get out some of that anger and frustration that’s been festering since May. They might not win a game but they’d all walk off the field. And probably expand the DL somewhat.
You can never have enough lefties!
I think it be interesting to see the secret service guys run the bases next to him. You never know when Cylo will attack.
Lance is done for the season, He had a set back.
Lance still plan on coming back next year?? I hope so.
nelson is doing a good job so far. Not flashy or extraordinary but getting it done.
Boy does Sabatella look good. Where has this guy been hiding? It will be interesting to see who plays center in the coming weeks with Harris coming on board…
*sigh*….you find something else to do for 10 minutes and it’s 5-4. WTF guys?
Woo hoo… that was close.
Good job guys, cya tomorrow.Nice to meet you Nelson.
Von Hayes did not have his best night tonight (in my opinion.) It is the eighth inning and we have a new pitcher from a lesser league doing a nice job, but we are NOT warming anybody up in the bullpen until after one out Nelson walks one and then gives up a single. All inning he was having trouble finding the strike zone. I thought Tommy Herr was managing.
Then, Von …why dont you pinch hit for Fenwick who is hitting .083 with two guys on and one out in the bottom of the eighth when the Ducks have shown they can get 4 runs in an inning?? Fenwick of course hits a Francia like weak hit to Francia at second and no one scores. Luckily, Cullen had a much better ninth inning than eighth, where he got one of the four batters out that he faced.
I liked the throw Castillo pegged to third to get that one Duck out midway thru the game. Nice throw!!! I hope he is staying around next year.
And Sabatella doesnt look to shabby either. Had a couple of nice hits…and he hustles too.
Mark, the game was just to boring so they put some zing in to it to keep us few awake.
And Stormin in Section20.. Yes, Brian is a very, very nice addition to the team
Nice win tonight guys!!!!
Speaking of Cylo does anyone else think that they should replace or repair the current costume. It is starting to look a little worn.
Steinborn and Marcotte were let go after the game. Did anybody notice the missing DL players tonight? It is getting bad whenthere is no place for them in the pen or in the dug out. Nice win tonight. Let’s get some Crabs
What is with that flamingo like dance slash kata that Pete Rose Jr does at first when he is the field after certain outs???
It looks like he is a frustrated ballerina.
packm\ule why bust on Tommy at least he won a championship here. Maybe he could bring one back again next year.
Yes, Tommy Herr did win a championship here. Very true. I still thought that he left pitchers in too long. I just dont understand the save the bullpen attitude.
we really did not have anybody in the pen to go with tonight. We used three last night.
Didnt we have Renault, Rleal, Marcotte and apparently Gomez and Cullen?????
I just dont know why the bullpen (whoever he would bring in) IF Nelson needed help wasnt ready earlier. That’s all.
I just dont understand why we carry 12-13 pitchers and they can only pitch 1-2 innings every 3rd or 4th day…except Cullen who does a good job on back to back days.
We dont need to win tomorrow, we needed to win tonight. I would worry about tomorrow…..tomorrow.
renault just had four wisdom teeth pulled, Marcotte was let go and Rheal would you really want to use him in a close game with his track record?
So was the plan tonight to have Nelson pitch nine innings????
I understand all of your points, Kelley. I thought that we would had some other plan than to warm someone up after Nelson was past due to be replaced.
I still commend Von Hayes on his ability to bring new faces in so September is not stale. The game tonight was a great effort by new faces and some old faces.
Nice running grab by Mike Woods in deep left going away from the plate. Jutt tracked down some long fly balls. Caruso made a nice play in the hole. Ryan made a nice play on the first out of the ninth. And the Stormers played errorless ball.
Did anybody else notice that Rose was a whole foot out of the batter’s box on his homerun??? I know everybody erases that line to cheat a little. But come on PJ dont make it so obvious.
Great Job tonight guys!!! Its nice to see new faces to the team!!
Gonna miss ya Trevor best of luck!
Way to go Bryan, Jutt, and Stormers!!!
A won is a win, is a win. I will take it no matter what.
I meant a win instead of a won. Stupid iPhone keypad.
Regarding post 20 – I agree. I had the same basic observation last night. Not trying to be unfair to Fenwick – he hustles and plays good defense at multiple positions, but he has limitations.
And speaking of being fair – you do have to credit management with bringing Sabatella in. He has a nice combination of speed and power and is really taking advantage of this opportunity.
soda man 24 I agree with you on the cylo costume. My girlfriend got cylo’s autograph and came back and said the costume smelled pretty bad. But the guy who did cylo tonight was funny.
Thanks
With the need for more offense and another new outfielder (Harris) coming in, I think moving Woods to second may be the way to go. Woods does a great job in left field but more production is needed from the second base position.
You all should check this out…http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=pearlman/080829
Quincy Foster was at the game. Does this mean he is coming back to play again?
Quincy has been at the games for about the last week. I doubt it.
Packmule, I totally agree. If all these Pitchers we have can only Pitch 1 Inning every 4th day , why do we have them here?? Ok, we lost 2.
On Labor Day, Quincy and Tom Herry were both there. Coincidence? Conspiracy? Nothing at all? You decide…
Sorry, Tom Herr, not Herry.
Yeah, Tommy was here last nite too. maybe for an Interview or setting up his Canonization????
Tom & Kim Herr are at almost every game since the signing of Jordan.
I have seen the Herr’s at almost every game as most parents would be if they had an apportunity to watch their son play. My question was about Quincy and if he wants to play.
I agree with you Pack…I was beside myself that no one was warming up even during the 7th inning with an unknown commodity(new pitcher). These guys aren’t Koufax..Carlton etc.
Cylo’s uni is starting to wear a bit. He/she better watch himself/herself with the track record of this organization this season. They may shock everyone and sign Downtown Yorkie.
As far as Von and the pen, it has been going on all year. He waits until the pitcher gets into trouble, then gets someone up. It’s not something that has just started happening. He doesn’t have someone in the front office telling him how many pitches a guy should throw and who should be used next. It is one of his biggest weaknesses.
I hear the Gateway mascot is available.
Cylo is looking and smelling bad.I wonder if we can get a new one till next season. Ok, that would mean spending money. but I think it would be worth it..
Cylo is still funny and I like watching him/her.
I thought we had extra pitchers we could have put in last night. But I could be wrong…
Good luck tonight guys.
Wouldn’t that be rick’s job? I really do not know when the pitching coach makes suggestions or does he just sit and watch it all go down.
The manager decides who and when goes into the game.
We had the same situation last year with people warming up in time. Knowing exactly when to have a pitcher warm up is got to be tough. Deuce, I wanted to know what went in to when to make a pitching change and who to use. So I asked that question at the Q&A session with the coaches and got the following answers:
Rick said he talks to every pitcher each day and finds out how they are feeling. When Von makes the lineup, Rick gives him the pitchers that are availible and how many pitches they threw the last game they pitched and when it was.
It was a very interesting conversation and I now have a lot of respect for what they do. I know I would not like to make that call. Remember the other night, Von brought Sendy in and the first pitched was drilled over the outfield for a multiple run homer. Then he gets greif for making the change and giving up the lead. It is a no win situation. You win some, you loose some.
I totally agree. I’m only stating that ultimately it is the managers decision when a pitcher gets ready and when a move is made
I had to laugh last night when Ray Knight, in the Phils/Nats postgame show, mentioned that the Nats whipped Philly because Philly left a pitcher in too long. Yep, been there, seen that! So it happens to everyone…although Klebe did seem to have it down to a science.
Since the Nats aren’t going to even catch a whiff of post-season and an enemy of my enemy is my friend, GO METS!
Sorry Deuce, I was talking to Maureen and just put your name in. Duh! Working and blogging is dangerous. You are right. At the end of the day, the change is on Von’s shoulders.
Von had some interesting comments about when he goes out to the mound if he is going to pull them right a way or give them one more shot.
#50 was down right hilarious!!!!!!!
I’m here all week, try the veal!
