Bryan Sabatella has made a strong first impression with the Barnstormers. Through five games, he’s 9-for-18 with three doubles and a home run. The 6-4, 220-pound outfielder has provided an offensive lift to a team that really needed one.
“Sabatella got off to a hot start,” manager Von Hayes said. “That’s immediate results for us. He plays a good outfield, too. He’s a pretty polished player for somebody so young. I’ve been impressed so far.”
Sabatella hasn’t exactly come out of nowhere. He was a Triple Crown winner in the Northeast Conference at Quinnipiac University and was drafted in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners in 2005. He spent parts of two seasons with the Mariners – appearing in just 168 games in A ball – before getting released.
From there he went to the United League, which is perhaps the lowest level of independent ball. He batted .313 with moderate power for the Alexandria Aces in 2007 before breaking out this year. Sabatella hit .340 with a .949 OPS in 84 games.
The Barnstormers are openly considering bringing Sabatella back next season, if he passes this late-summer audition. The outfielder, who can also play first base and third base, is relishing this chance.
“That’s why I came here, to get my name out in the league and spread it around and hopefully get an invite (for next year),” he said.” I’ll at least get some experience out of it and learn a little bit. … This is one of those leagues that everybody knows about. It’s an elite league that everybody is trying to get into. As soon as I got the call, I jumped right on it.”
Sabatella could be a valuable player to have on the 2009 roster. He brings defensive versatility, speed and – if the first five games are any indication – a good deal of opposite-field power. For a right-handed batter, that’s a nice fit at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
ROSTER MOVES: Pitchers Chris Steinborn and Trevor Marcotte were released after Wednesday night’s game. Steinborn was 1-5 with an 8.56 ERA in six starts. Marcotte was 0-1 with an 8.74 ERA in seven relief outings. C Lance Burkhart, out since June 24 with a fractured wrist, will not be returning this season.

Nice to see Bryan here and hope he will return for the 2009 season that would be cool!!
good luck tonight guys!!
Wow, it’s been a busy couple of days for Lancaster on the AL Transaction Page. I see where Yamel Guevara was placed on the inactive list Jeff Muessig was activated, plus all the other signings and releases.
I am sure glad we did not go with the “name on the back” of the jersey like York did. They would need to be velcroed on instead of sewed.
Should be an interesting push to the playoffs. Another oone starts tonight.
Oh, and Kyle Nichols was released from LI. I wonder where he will show up now, maybe Bridgeport.
Believe I heard last night that Yamel has returned home.

“The Barnstormers are openly considering bringing Sabatella back ….”
At what point can a team sign a player for next year? Maybe we can lock up Sabatella and Woods giving them an out for affiliated ball just like during the regular season. This could be a win-win situation. The team can commit to players they want back and use them for marketing the 2009 team, and the players would have an insurance policy to fall back on in case they don’t land with an affiliated team. I’m sure the lawyers could get real creative with this.
It would be great to have Woods, Sabatella and Turner back for next year.
If Mike Woods doesn’t get any offers he better fire his agent. Matter of fact Michael….I’ll be your agent. You are a Class act that needs to be recognized for what you are and can give an Affiliated Team.
Right now….Sabs can play on my team anytime.
I certainly hope we haven’t seen the last of Lance. I hope you return.
Atlantic League teams can sign players whenever they want. Those players don’t need an out clause for affiliated ball, but big-league organizations are forced to pay a fee to sign them. That’s what happens during the season.
AL teams typically wait until at least January before they start signing guys so they can pursue other options.
I told them there would be hell to pay if they let me go! The nefarious stratagem I’ve put into place is all but complete. Soon the BASA rep will have his day. My plants have done their job, and the blood spilled into the void will be dignified once again!
thought i.d share this, it gave me a nice laugh. a wise blogger once said….’once a barnstormer, always a friend’. on that note, i kept hearing people boo juan francia everytime he came up to bat. after we brought him home and ate our late night dinner, i asked him if he heard the booing. i assumed he’d be upset but instead he started laughing. it was danny, yamel and coffiee sitting up in the boxes. they had told him they were going to get the crowd to boo him as a joke. haha!
Ah yes, I know that blogger well.. ME. LOL
Those who boo’d Juan are aware that it was not his choice to leave. He loves his host family and Lancaster. I hope it was just those broken wing players in the skybox and not any Stormer fans. I cowbelled Juan and got nasty looks from Renault… he must have been on pain pills or something
Hello.. just got home.. whats the score?
Just heard Eric RBI.. 5-4
thanks rad!
8-4 them
Rad….you honestly, really DON’T GET IT, do you. Now why would Nick give you dirty looks for cowbelling Juan?? You think if Nick is facing Juan , he’s gonna cheer for him to hit a Homerun?? You think Juan is gonna hope Nick strikes him out??
Before and after the Game you can be friends all you want. You can socialize, go to dinner….be in a wedding…be best of friends.
When the Game starts and you walk between the white lines, friendships go out the window. You root for your Team, you support YOUR team, you cheer for YOUR team. You’ve obviously never played any organized sports. AFTER the game is over THEN you can be best of buddies all you want.
That is why Nick gave you dirty looks. No, it wasn’t because he was on medication or any other excuse for “a bad mood”.
*sigh*…..roflmao………
Ramastella hustled and hit the ball well again tonight. Hope he is a keeper.
Mike Woods had a nice at bat working the count to 3-2 before walking. Good luck nest year wherever you land, Mike!!
By the way, since the stadium had DePriest (46) as the starting pitcher tonight and Smith had his uniform, I would like to know—did he get a call from an affliated team?????
If so, good for him.
Boob.. you had to be there.. he was upset that a certain host family member chose to sit on the Duck side of the field. As I do when the Crabs are in town.. Nick was just joking .. I hope
Pack.. DePriest is inactive at the moment.. I’m sure he’ll be around the Clipp this weekend
Rad, thanks for the update….
… in an “aircast”
That is too bad….Will he be back for them this year?????
You can talk to him tomorrow.
okay why would you put a pitcher in tonight who was complaining all night that his elbow hurting? We should not have lost that game again wait til the last minute to take out the starter and then use some body who is not 100%.
Booby are you from here or another state maybe orgeon?
Born and bred
Was that supposed to be a diss??? You really really don’t wanna go there, you really don’t.
I’m trying really hard, but some times it is hard to root for “MY TEAM” when I am not sure who my team is day to day. The revolving door effect is making it difficult to really connect to the team.
I liked Harris last night. Ha looked confident on the field.
I don’t get how people can complain about a “revolving door” and then crow about how good Sabatella is as if he was here in April and they kept him in hiding. Beyond that, what difference does it make at this point? They’re not in last place in the league only because they’re doing slightly better than a team that doesn’t care. If this is what you can’t connect with, that’s a GOOD thing! Personally, I think Hayes should put that door into hyperdrive for the last 8 home games. I can think of 9 names they could lose today without feeling a thing so why not lose them and get a few new people in here who could prove their worth this year and come back to apply it next year?
Maureen.. the revolving door is how host families feel when they have 6 different players living in their home in 5 months.
So Booby… what make you think you know why Nick was giving me…and others dirty looks??? Unless you happen to know him… very well!
booby not a dis just a question.
Umm… I said Harris did a nice job not anything about a revolving door.
OOppps.. Mark/ Maureen. That blogging and working thing just don’t work well together.. Sorry Maureen
There could be another new player tonight, so the revolving door hasn’t stopped yet.
24) Complaining to you or telling the manager I can’t go tonight? There is a big difference. Again why put the players in the middle of things. If I was on this team I would be afraid to say anything to my “friends” seeing it always ends up on the blog. If I am Von I confront Nick. How would you feel if he lost his job based on something that was posted here? As Tom Hanks said, “There is no crying in baseball”.
30) I agree 100%. I know he is soooooo cute, but I would start with CF
36) Quincy?
Mark:
I didn’t complain about whether the revolving door was fair or not. That is not my place to say nor am I qualified to make such a determination.
My point was that it was making it hard for ME personally to connect with the team and call it “My team”. That is my opinion and my personal experience. Also, if you look back at the posts I have made no references to Sabatella.
Wah Wah Wah! Sorry #37, could not help myself. I love that movie. Mark, right on dude!
All minor league teams are a revolving door. Players get better they move up. They don’t get better they move down. Ever work at a company with a lot of turnover? It’s the same thing. As fans it just make us work harder to know who the players are.
As Mark said, let’s get players in here now to look at. I find it enjoyable to actually watch the new guys run out ground balls. No offense to Matt, but I think this is an area he could improve on and set an example as a leader on this team.
Two things:
I know you, personally, didn’t make any references to Sabatella but I’ve seen plenty of references to “revolving door” and Sabatella’s on-field prowess lately and I just figured I’d point out that “you”, as in everyone, can’t have it both ways. If you want a team that sucks forever, fine. No more new players. But for every host family there are hundreds of people who, I’m sure, are really, REALLY tired of having a “home team” that couldn’t claw it’s way back up the standings if it’s life depended on it. And next year it may well be that serious.
Second, I never considered being a host because my house was about the size of a refrigerator crate. Now I have a big house, extra vehicles and so on and while I’m considering it, I’m still not all gung ho into it and this is exactly why. Every minor league team I’ve ever seen has had a high turnover rate for one reason or another and although Lancaster had been an exception, I figured that HAD to change after last year’s nasty reunion tour. I would have EXPECTED a lot of turnover this year and I do expect it for the foreseeable future. I’m not sure how well I would tolerate a parade of players through my house so while I’m considering it, my hosting a player is far from certain. Additionally, baseball is based on The Team being far more important than any of it’s players. I doubt I could host a player without being somewhat upset if and when he was sent packing and that would warp my view of The Team. It’s my personal opinion that the the team should look for donations and put players up in empty apartments in the city. Then there would be no conflicts at all.
Dabulls, First Nick is not a freind he is just a player. And you could clearly see that he was not 100%. I choice what I post here very carefully. So that I do not let things out that are told to me by a player. Last night you could not help but hear Nick telling every body his elbow hurt. This year this blogg has become very negitive and nasty. I can say with confidence Quincy will not be the new player tonight.
Negativity starts with the in crowd saying half truths and pointing fingers. When you only hear half of a story you can usually inflame a group of people one way or another. That is the way it starts on blogs and middle school. People walk different stations in life, just because you do not agree does not mean it is negative. Trying to read emotions is very hard on a blog, what you may feel is negative may just be how someone types.
BTW, just because you heard Nick say to the bull pen that his elbow hurt, does not mean that he told the right people. As SIY said the other day, Rick asks the pitchers how they feel before the game and reports that to Von. Maybe before the game he thought he was okay and did relay the pain until it was to late.
Thank you Maureen. I couldn’t have said it better.
Good stuff Maureen…
LOL…Kelley…maybe you need to sit somewhere besides right behind the Bullpen. You may get some objectivity. LOL
This blog has become too Negative this Year???? ROFLMAO!!!!
Maybe the Teams performance over the last 2 Years has had something to do with it!! LOL
