Regardless of where this final week takes the Barnstormers, Matt LeCroy’s stolen base on Sunday will go down as one of the season’s defining moments.
That’s not just because it was rare – his first steal since Aug. 9, 2002. It’s also because of what it symbolized. Here you had a long-time big leaguer with bum knees giving every ounce of effort just to move 90 feet on the basepaths. And he was doing it in indy ball.
“He has been key for us all year,” outfielder Mike Woods said. “You can’t say enough about Matt LeCroy. Even when he was injured, he was there for our morale. Then he got healthy and provided so much offense. You need leaders like that around.”
When Von Hayes saw LeCroy taking off for third, the manager first thought his DH had missed a sign. His second thought?
“I was praying he didn’t get hurt,” Hayes said.
“Payback was in order for us. (Bridgeport) had a big inning against us earlier in the year where (Calvin) Pickering stole second. Maybe Matt was thinking about that to rally the troops. That definitely picked up the energy level.”
If Woods is the MVP of this team, LeCroy is the glue. He has held everything together, despite injuries, turmoil and a lot of losing. Many players in LeCroy’s position wouldn’t have ridden this season out to the finish. He has stuck around for the sheer enjoyment of playing, which has earned everyone’s respect.
“I tell these guys all the time, ‘There’s nothing better than playing on a team that’s going to win every night,’” LeCroy said. “I’ve done that. I’ve played on teams that knew coming in they were going to win that ballgame. Whether you’re down eight runs or up, that’s fun. These guys are starting to feel it. It’s a lot easier coming to the ballpark every day.”
During a long baseball season that sometimes feels like it will never end, you often remember the big things – like Eric Crozier’s inside-the-park homer against Atlantic City in 2006. Sometimes, though, the little things stick out in your mind. One has the feeling LeCroy’s steal will be one of those little things. It represents a team that should have been out of it, but has refused to give up.
The Barnstormers lost for just the second time in 11 games. Although they remained three games behind first place York, they fell behind Newark and into third place. The Bears are 2.5 back.

What a joy it has been having Matt on the team this year!
His upbeat attitude and playing abitlity has been a lot
of fun to experience!
I tip my hat to Matt LeCroy! His enthusiasm is a spark that can ignite the entire team on to victory. Great job, Matt!
Thank you for printing this tribute to Matt, Jason.
Let’s Go Stormers!

Can we vote for Mike and Matt to Co-MVP this season? It really is a shame to leave one or the other out.
Rad, we’ve had co-MVP in the past.
I love watching Matt hit, but Michael plays the field and hits which helped me make my decision a bit easier. Plus, Michael leads the league in stolen bases and is second (behind Lloyd Turner) for triples.

I have to admit I was one of the people questioning way Matt was brought here to play. But after we lost players to affilated ball and injuries he showed us why he is here. LET’S GO STORMERS !
Well my votes would be Michael MVP and a community MVP would be Matt or Ryan Cullen and Lloyd would deserve a nod in there somewhere as well. These 4 guys never seemed to give up, always gave it all they had even when Matt was not playing he was in the dugout keeping the guys moods up. He is this years Russ Cleveland!
Matt is a Class act as is Mike. I would love to see Matt back next year and I hope I don’t see Mike unless it’s on TV.
These guys play the Game the way it was meant to. They have been a true joy to watch.
This last month has been a true joy to experience and I don’t think it’s over yet.
Go STORMERS!!!!!!
It is so nice to read all the positive comments again. The guys are playing just as hard now as they ever were. Things are just clicking.
Lets enjoy the ride and hope that it is a long one.
Go Stormers……
Dave and I will have to dye our hair blonde to fulfill the bet with the guys if they win the second half.
Last night after the game Mike said, “I gonna buy the dye”
Always wondered if blondes do have more fun.
Go Stormers…
I hope Matt is back next year as well!!!
It was VERY exciting to see him steal when the Bluefish weren’t even expecting him too. MVP-MATT LECROY!!!!
I always enjoy when I see Matt in the lineup, love the energy and the excitement he brings game in and game out!!! KUDOS AND LET’S GO STORMERS!!!
CALLIN OUT A CODE RED!!!
Isn’t Dave already a BLONDE???
I know it is still early, but Newark is leading York 3-0 in the top of the second.
Ha! Sounds like they like the umps there as much as we like them here.
Let’s go Stormers!!!! You can do it!
Come on guys, lets show them the big bats.
LeCroy is a true pro and a hitter’s hitter. I hope he is back next year but if he is not, management has shown us what it is like to have a real pro in the line-up and they will have raised the bar for themselves. After having LeCroy, the ‘Stormers better not give us someone like JT (i know you all love him) next year.
Thanks Matt for a great year. Please lead us to the PLAYOFFS!
York just tied it up at 6, now it is the Bot 5th
Congrats to Lloyd!
York now loosing 9-6. Come on Stormers, you can do it.
Whats the score???
6-3 Somerset top of 7th.

southernalfan…why would you bring up JT ? I’ve said it quite a few times already on here..he is retired, he’s not interested in coming back…it aint going to happen.

Mets lose again! Phils 1/2 out …….
Let’s go ‘Stormers, rally time.
Boys are back on bottom now
10-3 Somerset
At least York is losing too
How’s York doing?
That was my thought too.
York losing 10-6 in the 9th
It’s been that way for awhile though…I’m a little concerned what that means.
I hope it is just that Newark had to change pitchers or something.
This Desean Jackson threw away a touch down trying to be Mr. Fancy Pants… DIdn’t he realize he wasn’t ove the line … YET !!!!! He’s like a mini T.O. all attitude.
Oh yeah, how the Stormers doing???
Final York loses 10-6
Thank goodness!
Way to go Matt!!!! Also, congrats to Michael for setting the new league record for runs scored!!!!
Good try guys. We’ll get the next two.
HEy.. whats the final score???
Great job Matt!!! Way to go Michael for setting the record!!!
Let’s get’em tomorrow!!!
10-5 Patriots
Oh Geezzz, thanks Dawn
SIY – Congrats on the win. It’s a shame somebody had to lose that game.
I would have taken a Stormer’s win and a Cowboy’s loss.
I second that thought SIY
Last I heard, JT would be back in a second if he was asked.
