Is it a dream team or a problem waiting to happen? The Barnstormers’ decision to hire Tom Herr as Von Hayes’ bench coach could go in either direction at this point. It will all depend on how well these two strong-willed men work together.
Let’s look at the pros and cons of this intriguing turn of events …
THE POSITIVES:
Herr is back in the organization. It always seemed strange — and a little silly — to see him sitting in the stands at Clipper Magazine Stadium while his hometown team flopped around like a fish out of water for most of last season.
The Barnstormers desperately needed another astute baseball person. One of the fundamental problems with Year 1 of the Hayes Era was the absence of checks and balances. Hayes had control over everything. He didn’t seem to defer much to his coaches and he had autonomy over roster decisions. Head of baseball operations Keith Lupton essentially did what Hayes wanted.
That’s seldom a good arrangement. Everyone needs a sounding board. If decisions seemed impulsive last season, it was because there was no one strong enough to challenge Hayes’ thinking.
Herr could be that guy. During his two-year stint as manager, he showed a keen ability to find players who fit together well. The Barnstormers have lacked that skill ever since Herr left. Even on the rare occasions when they’ve had an abundance of talent, they’ve had gaping holes in certain areas — such as the bullpen at the start of 2008 — or redundant parts — such as the long list of high-strikeout hitters last season.
It’s one thing to find players. It’s another to put together a cohesive unit. After going 27-43 during the first half of 2005, Herr won 57 percent of his games here. He figured out how to succeed in the Atlantic League.
“For me, the most important thing is we give ourselves the best chance to win,” Hayes said. “I think Tommy does that for us. He’s a teammate of mine. I think we see things clearly in the type of team we like to present. We agree on a lot of things when it comes to baseball and that’s one reason it’s a good fit.”
Hayes deserves some credit. It takes self-confidence, and maybe even courage, to bring someone like Herr into the fold.
But it also leads to …
THE NEGATIVES
All of the things that make Herr an asset also make this a potentially volatile situation. Let’s face it. This is awkward. You have a former manager who won a championship serving under a current manager who had the worst record in the league during his first tour of duty.
Hayes may ultimately win here. He may have a second season like Herr produced. But he hasn’t proven himself in this league yet and he has been elevated over the man who excelled in the job. That’s seems backwards.
The Barnstormers look like they’re trying to have it both ways. After all, they could have replaced Hayes with Herr and handed the reins of the organization back to the one manager who has succeeded here. They weren’t ready to do that because they felt Hayes deserved another chance. And, perhaps, because they would be admitting they should have rehired Herr prior to the 2008 season.
The PR savvy (and middle ground) move was to bring Herr back in a secondary role. It could be a master stroke. If Herr helps find players, helps keep the guys happy and helps the organization win, everyone looks like a genius. But all of this depends on Herr having some authority, which is uncommon for a coach.
As it stands, Herr is third in command behind Lupton and Hayes. The Lupton-Hayes combo produced a 64-76 team that pushed 65 players through the revolving clubhouse door last season. Clearly, a change was needed because last year was a mess.
Herr is that change.
“I’m happy to be back because I felt like I was a big part of the Barnstormers from the very beginning,” Herr said. “The challenge for me is to try to get the club back to being competitive and being a playoff contender again. Whatever way I can help in that regard is the motivation for me at this point.”
Ultimately, how much Herr’s return alters the Barnstormers’ future will depend on how much input he is actually given. Hayes indicated he wants his new coach to have a strong say, but that is contrary to the way things worked last season. It remains to be seen how well Hayes can relinquish control and how well Herr can handle being second fiddle. It’s no secret he really wants to be the manager.
THE CONCLUSION:
The Barnstormers have a lot at stake in 2009. They’ve lost all of the goodwill they built with the championship season by putting a terrible product on the field for two consecutive summers.
If Herr’s return works out and the team makes the playoffs, 2007 and 2008 will be forgiven and forgotten. If the dream coaching team turns out to be ineffective, it will be another example of how the Barnstormers haven’t fared well lately when it comes to their baseball decisions.

Hopefully Hayes will take the advice of Herr, who has proven that he can win in this league. Hayes has not proven that he is willing to listen to others at to this point.
This is almost a good as a soap…stay tuned….this could be fabulous…or the biggest Train wreck in modern Baseball history.
Volatile. Interesting choice of words. I can see this arrangement becoming more unstable than nitroglycerine. From the end of spring training last year when Hayes cut Ambrosini loose my impression of his approach to the season was “my way or the highway”. I’m sure Herr wants back into baseball in the worst way and this is his best and maybe only chance, so he is willing to compromise. Question is, can he really perform under the Hayes “under my thumb” style.
Who will really be the coach??
I say we give them a chance. Saying that Hayes is “my way or the highway” without regarding what Tom did to the team “I did this to get back in the big leagues” is unfair. Why not wait and give both of them a chance. They both are big boys and maybe Von can look at the big picture while Tom can focus on the payers. we saw the reception that Tom got in the minor league and how long he lasted and how no one wanted him last year, there may be a reason for that.
Agree with Maureen…I think there is way too much “this isnt going to work” type attitudes associated with this SO FAR! They havent even had a chance yet.
And crazy27….Von is the manager and he’ll have the final say on players etc. In my opinion Herr should take a back seat…no matter how much he wants to get back to the majors. Apparently there wasn’t much interest in him other than Lancaster though. Otherwise we wouldn’t even have to worry about this scenario.
Bottom line is….Hayes and Herr need to work together and do what is best for the TEAM. They were team mates ONCE and lets hope they can be team mates again for the good of the Barnstormers.
here here
Let’s do a poll for pitching coaches! I pick Denny Harriger for pitching coach
wonder if Jordan Herr is in the mix for next season then.
That could be fun to watch
Think Denny’s wife would mind? The kids are a little bigger now.. it would be great to have him.
Herr will get a couple fans in the stands.
Denny as pitching coach…sweet! That would be great for the pitchers.
Or if is not coaching how about Sparky. What do you like booby?
Hey everyone I know I dont post alot but I read this all the time I just want to wish everyone a great Holiday and a winning 2009 season.
If Tommy can turn the Barnstormers around, another winning season on his resume’ would be great. This would help him get in to Double-A or Triple-A ball. This is a good idea.
“The Barnstormers have a lot at stake in 2009. They’ve lost all of the goodwill they built with the championship season by putting a terrible product on the field for two consecutive summers.”
That’s about the only thing on this page I actually believe.
Mark, you need some Christmas Cheer
I’d love to see Harriger back as the Pitching Coach. Or maybe the Guy that visited last Season…Larry Christenson…Von and he are Big Buddies….that would be a buffo Coaching Staff.
I guess now we are thinking the failing season was Boot’s fault, why else would the bench coach be able to turn the team around. If we listen to that reasoning, the only reason the team won was Frank Klebe was the bench coach the winning season. We better stop with that talk, the team might get Frank back!
I vote Lance for pitching coach if he is not playing.
Nah, I have plenty of xmas cheer. But I’m not buying into this “2006 Reunion Tour Pt. II” rubbish. Let it go already. Plus, considering anything can happen at any time for any reason, I don’t believe the Dynamic Duo bit will actually happen until I see them out on the field April 23rd.
“The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 26 people filed complaints about Utley’s utterance.”
LOL…those 26 people should be required to take a tour of Philadelphia and interact with someone outside of their own home and younger than the age of 75.
lilfil…do you mean Sparky Lyle? Why would he come here?
Mark…what do you mean? Are you saying Hayes and Herr will not be talking the field on April 23?
Lance or Denny for pitching coach? Both very improbable! As I said before I am pretty sure that the powers to be are looking for someone with considerable experience….major league I assume. We need to keep up with the current Atlantic league teams in that respect. Thats nothing against either of those 2 guys but….
I mean TAKING the field.
“Plus, considering anything can happen at any time for any reason, I don’t believe the Dynamic Duo bit will actually happen until I see them out on the field April 23rd.”
Anything could happen at any time. Neither man has made his ambition a secret. I can’t imagine either would be here longer than it takes to say “Thanks, see ya” if an mlb contract came along. For example, I’m not even sure the replay of 2006’s final pitch was done rolling before Herr was out of here. Either could have a health problem or a family problem or whatever. I think the past couple of years have shown, in spades, that anything can happen and you can’t count on much from one day to the next. So this is all fine and well, but I wouldn’t waste much time discussing the pecking order of the dugout and where to roll out the victory carpet until April 24th.
Jason, there is an article in tonights sports page on the Flyers written by and “Ed Moran”.. any way this could be Ed from the Clipp/Dork Revs. fame?
Moran has been writing in Philly for years. I would doubt it.
Oh well, Thanks Booby… we love the Flyers and were just hoping.
Hey Dopey Dawn, How many more days?????
I wish we still had Jeremy Todd to give us all the inside locker room gossip. There is no way this won’t get ugly. Baseball is built on egos. One of these managers will win the team over. Once that happens, it’s all downhill. IT’S GONNA BE GREAT!!
Also, if it came down to it, I think Herr could totally take Hayes. That would be a good poll too! Who would win?
Jeremy who? Had a good time in 2007, did you?
Mr B. there is only one manager, the bench coach is not a manager. If people are talking this before the team is even made, what does that show the team. Remember Tom moved on. He wanted to move up… he managed a team and was let go, he was unemployed for a year and now he is a bench coach. I hope he is a great bench coach. He had a good year being a manager one good year out of three. He seems like a great guy.
You are not giving Tom much credit in being a good man by saying his ego might not be able to handle being a bench coach.
If there are any players out there reading this, when the turd hits the fan, make sure the coach you choose to stand behind will be still be there in 2010 (after 2012 it won’t matter anymore, we’ll all be dead).
I think Tommy should go in there, and do what he does best, which is cuddle his players. Von, who was a constant threat to job security, will surely watch his kingdom fall and Big T will reign once more.
Folks, I wish this wasn’t the case. I wish it wasn’t this complicated. I wish I could tell you that these guys are going to be sweat hearts. I wish I had legs.
But what I can say is it sure feels good to be back! So get used to it
Wlcome back ya b*astard!!
Merry Christmas Everyone
and same too you me fine lady.
Merry Christmas
Well i think this is a great move for the organization and i think there will be great times up ahead. I just want to say merry Xmas to Jason and all of the great Barnstormer fans out there.
Thanks M, hope you have a great Christmas. I agree, a great and novel idea.
Woooooods! you’re the best! have a great Christmas!
HO! HO! HO! Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
