Von Hayes and Tom Herr met at Clipper Magazine Stadium Monday to begin the process of constructing the 2009 roster. While many, including myself, have wondered aloud how two accomplished skippers will handle being on the same staff, neither of those men think there’s any reason for concern.
Hayes pointed out that former managers become coaches at the big-league level all the time, so it’s no big deal. He also said it will be easier to bring Herr into the fold now that two years have passed since Herr was last on the Barnstormers’ bench.
“It’s a completely new set of players,” Hayes said. “The players are going to look at us as bench coach and manager, not ex-manager and new manager.
“This year it works a hell of a lot better than if I had come in here in 2007, the year after he won it. That would have been impossible. With this time frame, I didn’t really see any problems.”
Herr said it was his job to make the new arrangement work.
“I think most of that responsibility lies with me,” he said. “My role is different than what I’ve been used to in the past. The adjustment that’s going to have to be made will be on my part.”
Hayes and Herr seem to be on the same wavelength when it comes to players. They both value athleticism, particularly as it pertains to defense. They want versatility, so they have a lineup that can win at home and on the road. They both stress fundamentals. Most importantly, they seem to be entering this venture as partners, rather than a manager having authority over a coach.
The first topic of conversation about the upcoming season centered on the bullpen. Hayes said he talked to Ryan Cullen about possibly returning and the lefthander was open to the idea if he didn’t receive an offer from an affiliated team. The Barnstormers want to make sure they avoid their 2008 fate, when a weak bullpen caused a terrible start.

Great read Jason!
Very interesting. It’s NICE to see and article, finally, about the inner workings of the Club instead of the veil of silence we had last year. Nice piece Jason, well done.
Jason nice article in the intell today. I feel the team this year will be better. I have a good feeling about Von and with Herr’s help it will be a good year.
Great article Jason!
WOW, have you heard about the tell all book Torre is coming out with? Looks like he really goes after the organization in a big way and also calls out some big name players. He pretty much calls A-Rod a homosexual (I think that’s the politically correct wordage? I can’t keep up these days) and hot for Jeter.
Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but I think the “Single White Female” obsession is more of one where A-Fraud (now, that is a nickname) doesn’t want to do Jeter, he wants to be Jeter.
I think if A-Fraud had some alcohol in his system and he was alone at Jeters place and they just got done watching the movie the Notebook, if Jeter asked him if he wanted to fool around, I wouldn’t put it past A-Fraud to experiment.
Or if A-Fraud was struggling with personal issues and Jeter was the only person who seemed to have a listening ear, I’m sure if Jeter tried to kiss him, A-Fraud wouldn’t pull away. God only knows where their passion would take them from there.
Now that I think of it, they both make me sick.
YANKEES SUCK!!!
The objects of the obsession aren’t usually the aggressors, but if in the movie Bridget Fonda had jumped Jennifer Jason Leigh (especially when they had the same haircut), I would not have averted my gaze.
Does that make me a bad person?
That’s enough chat boys… your getting gross.
A-Rod can’t hold a candle to Jeter in terms of being a CLASS ACT. The things I heard about Jeter is the reason why, standing in the Yankee’s gift store my son chose a Jeter tee instead of all the others.
I agree with your final statement Mr. B
Go PADRES!!!!
Brokeback Yankees
I don’t think we can even imagine what kind of sick crap goes on in the Yankees locker room after hours. The hormone driven flesh piles that probably take place should not be a part of baseball.
GO BRUINS!! Tim Thomas Rules!!
Unneccessary.
I for one would be glad to see Ryan Cullen back this year.
