Southern Maryland is in good position to win the first half in the Liberty Division and match the Barnstormers’ feat of qualifying for the playoffs in the franchise’s second season. The Blue Crabs are four games up with 13 to play. They have weathered a recent storm of player departures to take two of three so far in this series.
SoMd lost its best starter (John Halama), its best hitter (Eric Crozier) and its closer (Jim Ed Warden) shortly before the break. When it comes to managing an independent league roster, Butch Hobson is as good as it gets.
The Barnstormers still haven’t shaken their road troubles. They’re 1-4 on this trip and they’re 9-22 away from the Clip this season. Two positive items to glean from Saturday night’s box: Antonio Alfonseca made his debut and allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Gerard Haran continues to hit like a superstar. He went 2-for-4 and is sitting with a team-best .977 OPS.

no one blogging? Wow.
They Were all on the bus trip to the game
I was at work so I tried to do work which can be difficult because I get so easily distracted when it comes to baseball!
Do we have to play Road games?????
We talked about this on the bus. The second half, we would like to change the schedule to all home games. The playoffs and championship too!!!!
Is a move to Taiwan an upgrade to the AL? I’m not quite sure I understand the Cullen move.
How many base runners did Barnstormer catchers throw out today? I guess Morris and Haran are capable in the DH role, but their catching/throwing skills are way below even affiliated rookie league level. Just a fact.
I’m honestly sorry, but Mulhern remains a huge liability in the outfield. He misjudges balls, makes poor plays and throws after he misplays a hit ball, and today there was a serious lack of hustle when a ball got over his head that he misjudged. It looks like he’s lost his DH roll to Morris/Haran and it’s getting tougher and tougher to hide this guy at a position.
Turner is still the steadying influence in the infield, especially with Bravo at 2nd. There were concerns about Lloyd’s error count, but remember he has more than double the amount of chances compared to league leading error maker hERRor. Turner is also going to give you a chance everytime he comes to the plate in a game.
Did the Barnstormers have to pay extra for a pitcher with 5-fingers plus a thumb on one hand?
Campbell starting over Foster was a no-brainer. He makes contact at the plate, seems to play hard and doesn’t spend time showing up the umpire. He can’t seem to hit with runners in scoring position, but that can be said for the whole team after the SoMd. series.
How many runners on Saturday alone did the Barnstormers leave on base and in scoring position? A lack of mental toughness was mentioned in an interview by a great player many years ago regarding getting players home, especially with 2-outs. Is 2009 reminding anyone of anything?
Danny Bravo is a second baseman. Williams played third base in college according to his bio. Why the switch today by VonhERR? This stuff is what causes me to scratch away the remaining good hairs from my head.
Watch out for the Revs in the second half and that’s all I have to say about this.
With Somerset coming to town, it can only be hoped that the Barnstormers don’t play road quality baseball against the best team in the AL.
What a beautiful day for a ballgame today in Maryland. Those crab cakes on the way home were amazing as always and a cold beer would have been nice if I weren’t driving home.
RMaris to HOF.
JJackson to HOF.
MMantle – one reason why Cullen goes to Taiwan and it’s the same reason why the players go to Mexico…Money.
I know you have been banging on the catchers for a month now, but is it possible that some of the stolen base issues are the pitcher’ fault? I have not been to a game in nearly three weeks (thank goodness for the generous ticket exchange policy). I plan to watch to see what type of jump the runners get on the pitcher in order to determine if it is the pitchers, catchers, or both.
