The Barnstormers’ long road trip continues in Central Islip tonight. Lancaster has eight games remaining on this journey, including four at the Long Island Ducks and four against Newark. This was originally scheduled as an off day for the team to prepare for the second half. A rainout on June 20 forced a makeup game.
With Matt Watson in the outfield Wednesday, we got our first glimpse of the new-look Barnstormers lineup. It was …
-
Lloyd Turner, SS
Mike Woods, CF
Matt Watson, LF
L.J. Biernbaum, DH
Jed Morris, C
Ryan Mulhern, 1B
Aaron Herr, 3B
Michael Campbell, RF
David Housel, 2B
Eventually, the Barnstormers would like to move Biernbaum to the outfield to open up the DH spot for either the second catcher, in this case Gerard Haran, or either Bryan Sabatella or Mulhern. 2B Danny Bravo will slide back into his starting role when he’s activated from the DL. He’s out with a hamstring injury. When everyone is available, the lineup looks deep enough to contend in the second half.
The Barnstormers will not be at full strength this weekend. Woods did not accompany the team to Long Island because of a death in the family.
Zack Parker continues his search for his elusive first win tonight. He only has two decisions in 12 starts despite ranking 10th in the league in ERA. The rest of this trip, which marks the end of the first half tonight and the first seven games of the second half, will be a test for the Barnstormers. They are a combined 5-14 against Newark and Long Island this season.

Would someone PLEASE explain why Mulhern is still in the everyday lineup?? Why is he at 1b and Sabatella is sitting?? Mulhern, if he is retained, shouldn’t see the light of day in the Field. Is there more to the Hayes/Mulhern loyalty?
FIRE HAYES!!
What will be interesting is when Bravo comes back they will need to make a cut. My guess it will be an outfielder. I am hoping it is Mulhern and not Campbell, but my gut feeling is says that it will be Campbell.
Unless they cut an infielder, maybe Housel, because we all know that it will not be Herr.
Anyway, it will be an interesting thing to watch for.
Not sure why Vic Gutierrez hasn’t played more. He had good numbers in 2007 and 2008. He’s an overall better OBP than David, yet David has been starting ahead of him.

Vic is 37 yrs. old. and 9 yrs. older than David Housel.

Here’s Ryan Mulhern’s numbers: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/ryan-mulhern.shtml
It’s nice to see Matt Watson back in Lancaster. Hey Tom A… a McCaskey Grad! Is his daddy Rocky Watson, the running back from Temple?
Last game of the first half and a whole new beginning tomorrow. Go Stormers!
dadTB
Housel has 2-3 hits on the road. If you take out his three homeruns with 55 mph wind gusts at home, the rest of his hitting is terrible.
Michael Woods is the fly in the ointment right now. Has anyone misplayed/misjudged more balls from the outfield position in the past month (excluding Mulhern of course)? How does he let a monster high fly ball hit 5-feet up the centerfield wall turn into a triple? Woods also has performed terrible against left-handed pitching, the BA has dropped 70 points and his rapidly rising strikeout ratio is very close to Mulhern’s astronomical numbers. Oh yeah, he gets picked off first in a tied extra inning game, which is not uncommon for Woods. I’m not personally infatuated with Woods like most here, but as long as vonhERR loves you, one can continue doing what one wants.
The team needs to drop a catcher who can hit a little and pick up one that can throw out some baserunners. Haran’s number will continue to drop and he should be moved as quickly as possible before they get too bad and he has no value. There is no future for a 270lb catcher who can’t throw. I can see why he was available now when everyone is always looking for a quality catcher.
I’m a Lloyd fan, but he has to get his errors under control. Two yesterday and two that were ruled hits the day before on fairly routine ground balls. Turner developing hERRor disease is not a good thing.
If in fact ThERR was yelling up to the scorers table on an obvious error hit by his lazy a$$ son and demanding it be ruled a hit, the general manager of the team should have walked down to the dugout and fired him on the spot. The boy has lived off of his fathers coattails long enough and it’s time Lancaster cut the cord to both of these crybabies.
I would promise you that releasing both hERRors and Mulhern would not impact this team in a negative way. Add vonhERR to that list and there would be
happiness and bountiful winning in Lancaster.
I wasn’t able to listen to last nights game, was Vic finally able to make it to the stadium or did he quit?
Yeah, Tom..is he Rocky’s kid? Never even associated the last Names. Worked for Rocky eons ago at Lanc Rec.
MMantle,
I agree with you on Housel. About Michael, did he not play most games in Left Field last year so maybe Center is different to him. Put him back in Left and see if things change, I think so.
Maybe Lloyds errors are contributed to the fact he is trying cover two positions, Short Stop and Third Base.
MM…exactly who do you think deserves to be on this Team?
So Far you seem to think all these guys suck at something:
Herr(both)
Hayes
Mulhern
Woods
Haran
Housel
Bravo
Morris
Campbell
Alphonseca
Peeples
Scobie
Watson
Turner
Your Wife has to be a Candidate for Sainthood….roflmao.
In fact Herr was yelling up to the press box as imentioned before..not to mention a whole lot of glaring.
Good pickup Mr. Bauer.
I hate to pound on the catching position, but the fact of the matter is the Barnstormers have two players at this position who can hit but can’t throw people out. That is a weakness all teams will jump more in the 2nd half as the race develops. My reason for Haran to go is simply Morris has much more speed and we need another catcher who can play defense.
I believe Herr is a serious weakness that cannot be corrected, especially defensively. Maybe he can play 2B where he grew up in the affiliated minors? You can see it on the field and you can see it in how he carries himself away from the lines that he is not a hard worker and a head case. Maybe he doesn’t feel good at 3B and it’s affected the other parts of his game? I can’t figure it out after he came into town with all of those accolades.
Mulhern is simply incompetent as a position player(esp. outfield) and he has probably peaked as a hitter. A wasted roster position if he stays, but a kiss to VH keeps him in the lineup.
Housel is a nice guy. He just doesn’t fit what the Barnstormers need as a utility player offensively.
Sabatella is the first baseman. But he has been jerked around this week at 2B and the bench-for Mulhern of all people. This is where VH turns into a bum manager.
Sadly I believe vonhERR is going to finish the season. As it continues to be obvious he can’t win as a manager, the fans and city will punish the Barnstormers with empty seats this fall and non-renewal of season tickets this winter. And that dear friends is a shame.
I don’t see Sabby on that list.. he is a first baseman…
)
PERIOD !!
( thats for Stormin
Booby ( l love saying that word )!
I really think that the team could release Mulhern and hERR and win the 2nd half. Mulhern is a liability in the field and can’t hit consistantly and hERRor is a head case. I dont’ believe either bring anything to the team at this point, and I would trade them both for a solid closer.
If I were the GM, Housel would be the third player gone and I would trade Haran for a defensive catcher.
I wouldn’t add any player who calls me mid-season and says they want to come to Lancaster and then insert them into 14-15 ineffective games. Anyone could see Foster was out of his element and wasn’t gonna hit. Why did it take 55 ABs for vonhERR to see it. Most managers would pick that up in BP.
I haven’t picked on any pitchers except to say I would hate to pitch on this team because of errors and baserunners who run at-will without fear of being thrown out.
The jury is still out on Watson, but if not for a ridiculous bad bounce over the first baseman’s head, he would be batting .000-we’ll see just like we did with Foster.
You forgot to include yourself on the list Bobby, but that’s for another day.
vonhERR for HOS.
Bases loaded with Ryan at the plate. Outcome?
Ground out. Figures!
Dave, can you school the Ducks radio guy on the correct way to say LanKISSter.. not Lang Kasteh??
It’s killing me.. really, it is !!!!!
mantle…where is this defensive catcher that we can pick up? thats not an easy position to fill.
Wait, it’s LanKISSter? All this time I thought it was LANkisster. I spent all that time trying to not screw it up and I was wrong the whole time???
You sure were…. LOL
No one says it quite like Patterson. Must be that Pittsburgh accent, its very unique.
MM…the feeling is extremely mutual, that you can take to the Bank!
OMG, Ryan Mulhern hits a “inside the park” Home Run.
Way to go Ryan!!!
Go Stormers!!!
The second half of the year IS going to be different than the first half.
I, for one, am willing to still give this team a chance. It may not be what many want, but at least Von is trying to do some things differently – shake it up a bit. I do agree that I would like to see Gutierrez a bit. Turner did alright at third last year and Vic at SS with Lloyd at third should sure up the left side.
looks like Ryan and Aaron could be the hero’s tonight..
For all those Ryan Cullen Fans. He was in his first game last night and said it was very different. It’s very hot. The name of the team is Brother elephant. but he said good luck following the web site he can not even read it.
What was the last inside-the-park home run for Lancaster, Crozier way back in the Iron Age?
4seamed: You got it right. LANkisster.
Well it looks like Ryan and Aaron came through tonight and were hero’s.. If only Von would go away.. On to the second half..
Wow, that was actually a good game right up to the last play! Now why can’t they play like that more than .500 of the time? They obviously know how to do so, even Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum looked like they knew what they were doing.
OMG. Way to go Zackkkkkkk !!!!
Nice win tonight Stormers.
Hey Booby… I worked for Dave Stumpf and Rocky at the Rec… High School and some of college time. Evening rec in the local elementary schools and summertime parks… Cool!
Also worked at the Pershing Ave. Boys Club and Camp Snyder during the early 70’s with Ted Darcus and Phil Starr.
I was wondering if Rocky was Matt’s father… Thanks.
Zach wins, Zach wins!
Thank goodness. It’s about time!
Glad to see Gerard having a great game too!! Keep it up and good luck to the start of the second half!!
Tonight was a game that leads to optimism for the second half.
Right on, Mr. Collins.
dadTB: I worked for Dave too and then Rocky. Did the Summer Play Ground bit too. Also did the Clubs at Elementary Schools and Ref’d Basketball at Fulton and Buchanon in the Summer. Worked for the Rec briefly after Graduating from Mville….Still see Dave occasionally. Is Rocky still in the area??
Grew up on Pershing Ave block from Boys Club.
Congrats to Parker! Figures I was 3,000 miles away when it happened! Thank you to all of Zack’s fans who thought of me and called or sent a text! My phone was going crazy from 6 outs until well after the end of the game!
It’s pronounced….Lank..a…ster
say it fast!
No Pitch it’s not …
